The Hunting Island Lighthouse is a historic structure located in Hunting Island State Park on Hunting Island near Beaufort, South Carolina. Standing at 136 feet tall, it features a conical design with a cast-iron shell lined with brick, painted black on the top third and white on the lower two-thirds. Originally equipped with a second-order Fresnel lens, it served as a navigational aid visible up to 17 nautical miles until its deactivation in 1933. Today, it remains a popular attraction within the state park, open to visitors who can climb its 167-step cast-iron staircase to an observation deck, though it no longer functions as an active lighthouse.
Construction of the lighthouse began in 1859 but was interrupted by the Civil War, during which the initial tower was destroyed in 1862. Rebuilt starting in 1873 and completed in 1875, it was one of only two segmented cast-iron lighthouses in the United States, designed to be disassembled and relocated if necessary. Due to severe beach erosion, the lighthouse and associated structures were moved about a mile inland in 1889. It provided refuge during the 1893 Sea Islands Hurricane and continued operations until 1933. The innovative design, including components from the Phoenix Iron Works, allowed for its preservation and relocation.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the lighthouse holds significance for its architectural innovation and role in maritime history. It has undergone several repairs, including an 18-month closure in 2003 for rust damage to its stairs, with steel braces added for reinforcement. As of 2023, it was closed for further repairs estimated at $3 million to address cracks and corrosion, with potential plans for another relocation inland. Celebrations marked its 150th anniversary in 2009, and it continues to be maintained through state funding and visitor fees, offering educational value and scenic views.

I realize this image desperately needs more room at the bottom, but it was SO hard to get this moment, I couldn't help myself. The VAST majority of what I got had spectacular splashes, but no bird. Coulda been a rock for all anyone would know...
There were a few more pictures in this series which made reference to the Black River, which may be the Black River in Wisconsin. None were dated, but the car model would put the trip around the late 40's.
