Forming part of a COP26 Global Day of Action, Extinction Rebellion - who have worked with a puppet production company to create a giant, smoldering koala (name'd Blinky), representing the terror our animals are facing in the climate emergency - led a march through St Kilda's Catani Gardens. It was joined by the Red Rebel Brigade, as well as drummers and musicians.

Naturally formed ice that occurs in Tennessee at below freezing temperatures,i call them ice flowers! The formation of frost flowers, also known as "ice flowers," is apparently dependent on a freezing weather condition occurring when the ground is not already frozen. The sap in the stem of the plants will expand (water expands when frozen), causing long, thin cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then drawn through these cracks via capillary action and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem, causing a thin "petal" to form. In the case of woody plants and (living or dead) tree branches the freezing water is squeezed through the pores of the plant forming long thin strings of ice that look uncannily like hair i.e. "frost beard".
The petals of frost flowers are very delicate and will break when touched. They usually melt or sublimate when exposed to sunlight and are usually visible in the early morning or in shaded areas.
Coquina, a sedimentary rock formed from shells cemented together. The coquina must have formed since the last Ice Age which finished approximately 18,000 years ago. The shells and the cement are made of the mineral calcite.

An entryway in Ia, Santorini, Greece. Looking at form as the primary design element, when there isn't strong color contrast.
This image is part of the Exploring with a Camera series on my blog, focusing on Finding Form.
Like building blocks, these are lined up in rows and concrete is poured between the two pieces of white styrofoam to produce a strong, solid wall with excellent insulation properties

BEFORE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NORTH & SOUTH PIERS AT THE MOUTH OF THE TYNE, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR SHIPPING TO LEAVE THE RIVER WHEN AN EASTERLY GALE BLEW, AND IN 1850, THE TYNE IMPROVEMENT COMMISSION WAS FORMED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE RIVER, AND INCORPORATE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CREATING A SAFE HARBOUR OF REFUGE AT THE MOUTH OF THE TYNE.
IN 1852, AN ACT OF PARLIAMENT WAS PASSED AUTHORISING A MASSIVE ENGINEERING PROJECT WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY SEE THE CONSTRUCTION OF TWO STONE PIERS AND A LIGHTHOUSE AT THE END OF EACH PIER.
ON JUNE 15TH 1854, WORK COMMENCED ON THE NORTH PIER, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED AS A CURVE, AND INTENDED TO BE A MIRROR IMAGE OF THE SOUTH PIER, (CONSTRUCTION OF WHICH STARTED TWO YEARS LATER IN 1856).IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT THE NORTH PIER WOULD BE COMPLETED WITHIN A 7 YEAR TIME SPAN; HOWEVER THE PROJECT WAS PLAGUED BY DISASTERS. THE TASK WAS ENORMOUS, AND IT SOON BECAME OBVIOUS THAT THE WORK WOULD EXTEND WELL BEYOND THE ANTICIPATED COMPLETION DATE.
BY DECEMBER 1867, ONLY 1,920 FEET OF THE PIER HAD BEEN CONSTRUCTED, BEFORE SEVERE GALES, AND HEAVY SEAS BREACHED AND DESTROYED ALMOST 480 FEET OF THE STONE STRUCTURE. IT WAS LATER ESTABLISHED THAT THE FOUNDATIONS HAD NOT BEEN SUNK DEEP ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND THE POWERFUL FORCE OF THE NORTH SEA.
REPAIR WORK WAS EFFECTED, AND BY 1893 THE PIER WAS ALMOST COMPLETE, BUT MOVEMENT OF THE STRUCTURE WAS DETECTED DURING THE SEVERE WINTER STORMS OF THAT YEAR.
IN 1894, ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO REPAIR THE DAMAGED BLOCKS OF STONE, BUT IN 1895 FURTHER MOVEMENT WAS DETECTED, AND SEVERAL MORE STONE BLOCKS HAD SUFFERED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE.
BY THIS TIME, THE CURVED PIER WAS COMPLETE AND MEASURED 2,959 FEET IN LENGTH, INCLUDING THE LIGHTHOUSE.
DURING FREAK GALES AND HEAVY SEAS LASTING 48 HOURS IN JANUARY 1897, THE NORTH PIER WAS ONCE AGAIN BREACHED, RESULTING IN EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. 110 FEET OF STONEWORK COLLAPSED, LEAVING THE LIGHTHOUSE “MAROONED”. THE BREACH GREW, UNTIL IT WAS ALMOST 100 YARDS WIDE.
TYNEMOUTH PIER IN 1898, IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE PIER WOULD HAVE TO BE COMPLETELY REBUILT, WITH THE CONTRACT BEING AWARDED TO THE FIRM OF SIR JOHN JACKSON.
THE PIER WAS REDESIGNED FROM THAT OF A CURVED STRUCTURE, TO A STRAIGHT LINE, AND IN OCTOBER OF THAT YEAR, REBUILDING WORK COMMENCED. THE OLD SECTIONS OF PIER WERE USED AS SHELTER WHEN WORK ON THE NEW SECTION BEGAN. MOST OF THE WORK WENT ACCORDING TO PLAN, AND BY 15TH. JANUARY 1908, THE NORTH LIGHTHOUSE WAS COMMISSIONED.
IN 1910, THE NEW PIER WAS COMPLETE, AND EVENTUALLY OPENED ON 1ST. APRIL – NOT WITHIN 7 YEARS AS FIRST PLANNED, BUT A MERE 56 YEARS AFTER WORK HAD FIRST BEGUN. IT HAS STOOD SOLIDLY EVER SINCE.
TODAY'S IMPRESSIVE TOWER WAS BUILT BY TRINITY HOUSE IN 1903, WHILST THEY STILL HAD A DEPOT IN TYNEMOUTH. UNUSUALLY (AND USUALLY NOT POSSIBLE) THE LIGHTHOUSE WAS BUILT BEFORE THE REST OF THE BREAKWATER WAS COMPLETED. THE LANTERN HOUSES A CONSIDERABLY LARGE LENS FOR A HARBOUR LIGHT AND IT IS LIKELY THAT IT IS THE ORIGINAL; THIS ROTATES TO GIVE A GROUP OF 3 WHITE FLASHES EVERY 10 SECONDS. A FOGHORN MOUNTED ON THE TOWER GIVES ONE BLAST EVERY 10 SECONDS.

The Bernese Alps form the centerpiece of this late summer view of Switzerland; Jungfrau (J—4158 m), Moench (M—4089 m), and Eiger (E—3970 m) are among the higher peaks of the Central Alps. North of the range is the city of Interlaken, flanked by the Thune See and Brienzer See (lakes); the long, straight-segmented valley of the Rhone lies to the south.
On the southern flank of the Jungfrau massif is the Aletsch glacier, meltwaters of which feed the upper Rhone; another source is the Rhone glacier at the eastern end of the valley. One estimate holds that roughly half the ice in glaciers of the European Alps has melted since 1850. U-shaped valleys carved by glaciers are clearly visible; some, such as that of the Rhone, have been modified by through-flowing rivers.
The Swiss Alps are elements of a great mountain system that was constructed as Africa and Eurasia collided, starting more than 90 million years ago. Ancient basement rocks (>325 million years old) of the Bernese Alps were uplifted, folded, and forced northward between ~29 and 10 million years ago.
