Departure from Heysham on board the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's MANXMAN on Thursday January 16, 2025 on the 13:45 sailing to Douglas. The buildings to the right are Heysham A and B power stations. If the original plans had been completed the area occupied by the power stations would also have been used for port activities.

In 1891, the Midland Railway, which already operated Morecambe Harbour four miles to the north east, gave notice of its intention to develop a new harbour at Heysham and appointed consulting engineers James Abernethy and his son to undertake a feasibility study of the project. The plan was for an enclosed dock accessed through a lock, this idea made no further progress.
In 1895, a much larger Heysham port plan was put forward by Messrs James Abernethy & Son, in conjunction with the Midland Railway's chief engineer. This formed the basis of the harbour which was built, although there were many changes as work progressed and the full scheme was never completed. In 1896, an enabling Act of Parliament was obtained for the construction of the harbour and the contract for construction was let in July 1897. The project cost about £3 million.
The first ship to dock at Heysham was the Antrim, one of the ships that the Midland Railway had ordered for Heysham services. She came into the harbour on delivery from builders, John Brown at Clydebank on the 31st of May 1904. The first passenger sailing was a day trip to Douglas, Isle of Man by the Londonderry on the 13th of August 1904.
The south jetty was built in 1909 to reduce silt build up in the harbour entrance, plans from 1907 show that two jetties where originally planned each side of the entrance, but a north jetty was never actually built.
In 1941 a deep-water berth (Ocean Jetty) was built to the north east of harbour entrance. This was to allow tankers which were too large for the port to berth at the new Trimpell refinery which produced aviation fuel. Much of the fuel produced would have been for fighter aircraft stationed in Britain during World War II. After the Tranmere pipeline construction the Ocean Jetty berth was rarely used until its demolition in 1976.
Following the privitisation of British Railways Seallink Heysham Port was acquired by Sea Containers Ltd. In 2001 the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (MDHC) bought the port from Sea Containers.
Then in August 2005 the MDHC was bought by and merged with Peel Ports Limited who are the current proprietors.

This photo was so fun to shoot, even though it killed my eyes. I was shooting directly at a bulb when it was lit. Also, it was not taken in a dark room. I turned my ISO WAY up to get this photo.
I chose this for form because one can really see the 3-D aspect of the bulb. Even though it is the source of light, there are shadows on the edges and the bottom. The bulb itself is a little dusty, and I really liked that because it looked natural. I took several shots of this object, but this was the first one and I liked it the most. In photoshop, I adjusted the color a little bit to make the bulb a little darker and sharpened it around the edges.
Handheld long exposure at night. The cars are moving very fast so all is left behind is the beautiful forms left behind of their headlights.
Here you also see more elongated signage on the road intended for drivers. In Hong Kong, signage on the road is typical, and one can reason that it is a lot safer this way to keep the drivers’ eyes on the road instead of up above.

When I first wrote about Form vs Function, I used my lighters as an example.
We spent this past weekend with Jim & Carol, and while we were there Jim gave me this Buck 110 knife (top). It's a classic that set the pattern for folding knives to come.
The pros on the Buck are obvious, it's looks and function, it is a thing of beauty, and it works. The cons are its weight and (for me) the lack of a clip. I like my knife clipped into my pocket.
The middle knife is my trusty Swiss Navy Knife. It's great, and again the wear on it hints at its history of many years of everyday use. As much as I love it, I hate its serrated blade, and it doesn't have a clip to hold it in my pocket - hence the lanyard. I've lost it in a lake once, and that's to make sure it doesn't happen again.
My everyday carry was the Milwaukee Fastback (bottom). It's a fantastic workhorse, and inexpensive to boot. It's a knife you can afford to abuse and lose. The wear on the opening button gives testimony to its constant use.
I say that the Milwaukee 'was' my everyday carry. That is because I have a request in for a lightweight multitool, and I now have the Buck.
I've picked a multitool with a titanium frame, and a straight blade. It is light. It doesn't include a marline spike, tweezers, or tooth pick (more's the pity) - which the Swiss Navy Knife does, but I reckon I can manage without those in favor of pliers and cutters. The multitool does have a clip, so It'll sit nicely in my pocket. And to my eye it looks good too.
Coming back to Form vs Function. The Navy Knife beats the Milwaukee and Buck hands down. Depending on my needs, it also beats the knife (multitool) I want to get. But, for everyday carry I want a straight blade and pocket clip - the Swiss Navy Knife has neither.
The Buck just feels right, and wood and brass wins out over a plastic grip plastic any day. I can forgive the lack of a pocket clip for the Buck's great looks and wonderful feel.
For the moment the Milwaukee Fastback and Swiss Navy Knife will be consigned to sitting on a shelf. When I get my multitool, it will become my everyday carry, and the Buck will get pride of place on my desk, and when I'm out backpacking or hiking it'll accompany me in my pack . But until I get the multitool the Buck will be my Everyday Carry.

Anish Kapoor in Pitzhanger Manor, optical tricks with mirrors and metal

Within the newly restored gallery, with its three circular skylights, Kapoor’s sculptures challenge our traditional notion of form and space by disorientating the viewer and transforming their surroundings.
These sculptures echo Soane’s complex use of mirrors and light and will enable visitors to Pitzhanger to see Soane’s architecture from a fresh perspective.

Pitzhanger Manor was bought by Sir John Soane (1753-1837) in 1800. He demolished most of George Dance's building but retained the southern extension, replacing the main block with one of his own design. In the same year Soane employed John Haverfield to produce new designs for the grounds which were delivered by September 1800 (guidebook). The new mansion was used to display Soane's art collection and for entertaining, his Lincoln's Inn house being retained as the family residence. By 1809 Soane was only occasionally at Pitzhanger and in June of that year he instructed James Christie to sell the house and the estate. Once again the property passed through a series of owners until, in 1843, it was sold to the politician Spencer Walpole and became the home of his four unmarried sisters-in-law, the daughters of the Rt Hon Spencer Perceval. Prior to the death aged ninety-five of the last-surviving Perceval sister, Frederika, in May 1900, her nephew, Sir Spencer Walpole, had begun negotiations with Ealing District Council for the sale of the house and the estate. The sale negotiations were completed early in January 1900 and, following Miss Perceval's death, alterations were carried out. The then Borough Surveyor, Charles Jones, was responsible for the designs for the alterations to the house and grounds and in April 1902 the building was opened as a public library. At the time of the sale, the property was variously referred to as Manor House Park (Middlesex County Times, 19 May 1900) and Perceval Park (Middlesex County Times, 28 July 1900). The name Walpole Park was adopted after communications between the last owner and Ealing Borough Council towards the end of 1900.
Further major alterations to the library building were completed by 1940 and then, in 1984, the Central Library was moved to new premises in Ealing. The following year a continuing programme of restoration and repair to both the mansion and the grounds began. The restored manor house was reopened as a museum and centre for cultural events in the late 1990s. The grounds continue (2000) in the ownership of the London Borough of Ealing.
