My cycling exploits continue. Before I went away there was a lot of press about the Mayor of London introducing a bicycle hire system similar to the one recently successful in Paris. When I arrived in Seville I noticed that they had one themselves. Seville is ideal for cycling - the centre has very little traffic and as everyone walks in the shade it leaves the sunny side of the avenues free to cycle on. Even I had a go - took me a while to work out the strange ticketing system and several attempts to get the bike moving, but I did manage two very short rides before I was defeated by my lack of skill, the cobblestones and the 40 degree heat.

The legendary Hachiroku, made (much more) famous by Takumi Fujiwara's exploits in Initial D.

I'm fairly happy with this overall. It's shorter and lower than my Falcon XY. Unfortunately this makes the whole car look a bit too low. It also has a bit too much black to match the 'panda' scheme.

Obviously many 'western' images of African people are directly connected to exploitation and slavery. But it is often forgotten that there's also an idealist ideology that sees non-Europeans as good and free and noble, indeed as exemplary. This photo is part of the latter tradition. The insets provide some background.

In 1610 one Barthelomeus Moor (1573-1636) bought a piece of land on what is now the Rokin in Amsterdam and built a house there; the pictured decorative statement was probably added later in the style of Louis XIV. He'd been born in Antwerp and was one of many merchants, often Calvinist, who fled the southern Low Countries in the wake of their fall to the Catholic Habsburgs and the onset of religious persecution. They found religious freedom and independence from monarchy in the Dutch Republic. Around 1600 Antwerp's population had diminshed from about 100,000 to a mere 42,000, and something like 30% of the population of Amsterdam was made up of Flemish Dutchmen. Many of these immigrants were merchant families soon to become wealthy in the prospering northern Low Countries.

No doubt, the choice of Moor or his family for this sculpture was motivated by the meaning of his family name. But added to that are the connotations of freedom, independence and desire for trade imputed to non-Europeans exemplified by that self-conscious, proud 'Moor'. He could well be a Carib or else maybe a Guinean. The inset top right is after a drawing by John Gabriël Stedman (1744-1797) of a Carib family. The one on the left is in the first book on African Guinea (more or less present-day Ghana) by Pieter de Maarees around 1602. It depicts Dutch (?) and African merchants and traders. Note the similarity in head dresses of the 'Guineans', the Carib and our 'Moor'.

It is time for us to renew our relationship with the planet and to stop the rampant deforestation, uncontrolled expansion of agriculture, intensive farming, mining and infrastructure development, as well as the exploitation of wild species. The choices we make from now onwards will be key to the future of the planet and to our own very existence.

The Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) is a tern in the family Laridae. This bird has a circumpolar breeding distribution covering the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe (as far south as Brittany), Asia, and North America (as far south as Massachusetts).

The species is strongly migratory, seeing two summers each year as it migrates along a convoluted route from its northern breeding grounds to the Antarctic coast for the southern summer and back again about six months later.

Recent studies have shown average annual round-trip lengths of about 70,900 km (44,100 mi) for birds nesting in Iceland and Greenland and about 48,700 km (30,300 mi) for birds nesting in the Netherlands. These are by far the longest migrations known in the animal kingdom. The Arctic tern nests once every one to three years (depending on its mating cycle).

Arctic terns are medium-sized birds. They have a length of 28–39 cm (11–15 in) and a wingspan of 65–75 cm (26–30 in).[3] They are mainly grey and white plumaged, with a red/orange beak and feet, white forehead, a black nape and crown (streaked white), and white cheeks.

The grey mantle is 305 mm (12.0 in), and the scapulae are fringed brown, some tipped white. The upper wing is grey with a white leading edge, and the collar is completely white, as is the rump. The deeply forked tail is whitish, with grey outer webs.

Arctic terns are long-lived birds, with many reaching fifteen to thirty years of age. They eat mainly fish and small marine invertebrates. The species is abundant, with an estimated two million individuals. While the trend in the number of individuals in the species as a whole is not known, exploitation in the past has reduced this bird's numbers in the southern reaches of its ranges.

The Arctic tern is a medium-sized bird around 33–36 cm (13–14 in) from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tail. The wingspan is 76–85 cm (30–33 in). The weight is 86–127 g (3.0–4.5 oz). The beak is dark red, as are the short legs and webbed feet. Like most terns, the Arctic tern has high aspect ratio wings and a tail with a deep fork

Cincinnati (/ˌsɪnsɪˈnæti/ SIN-sih-NAT-ee) is a major city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the government seat of Hamilton County. Settled in 1788, the city is located at the northern side of the confluence of the Licking and Ohio rivers. The city drives the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington combined statistical area, which had a population of 2,172,191 in the 2010 census making it Ohio's largest metropolitan area. With a population of 301,301, Cincinnati is the third-largest city in Ohio and 65th in the United States. Its metropolitan area is the fastest growing economic power in the Midwestern United States based on increase of economic output and it is the 28th-biggest metropolitan statistical area in the U.S. Cincinnati is also within a half day's drive of sixty percent of the United States populace.

In the nineteenth century, Cincinnati was an American boomtown in the heart of the country. Throughout much of the 19th century, it was listed among the top 10 U.S. cities by population, surpassed only by New Orleans and the older, established settlements of the United States eastern seaboard, as well as being the sixth-biggest city for a period spanning 1840 until 1860. As Cincinnati was the first city founded after the American Revolution, as well as the first major inland city in the country, it is regarded as the first purely "American" city.

Cincinnati developed with fewer immigrants and less influence from Europe than east coast cities in the same period. However, it received a significant number of German immigrants, who founded many of the city's cultural institutions. By the end of the 19th century, with the shift from steamboats to railroads drawing off freight shipping, trade patterns had altered and Cincinnati's growth slowed considerably. The city was surpassed in population by other inland cities, particularly Chicago, which developed based on strong commodity exploitation, economics, and the railroads, and St. Louis, which for decades after the Civil War served as the gateway to westward migration.

Cincinnati is home to three major sports teams: the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball; the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League; and FC Cincinnati, currently playing in the second division United Soccer League but moving to Major League Soccer (Division 1) in 2019. The city's largest institution of higher education, the University of Cincinnati, was founded in 1819 as a municipal college and is now ranked as one of the 50 largest in the United States. Cincinnati is home to historic architecture with many structures in the urban core having remained intact for 200 years. In the late 1800s, Cincinnati was commonly referred to as the "Paris of America", due mainly to such ambitious architectural projects as the Music Hall, Cincinnatian Hotel, and Shillito Department Store. Cincinnati is the birthplace of William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States.

Lighting: I set this on a mirror and then lit it from the side using a Yongnuo manual flash, hand held just out of the frame at camera left. I used side lighting because that creates the shadows that reveal shapes and textures. The flash and my tripod mounted camera were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N

What would be Bologna without its arcades? This city is covered by arcades for almost 40 kilometres. The style of these can be very different, for example, you can see the elegant arcades of the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi or the painted arcades of Piazza Malpighi. The arcades aren’t only an architectural element but they represent the essence of this city. In the summertime they are a perfect refuge from the sun and in the cold seasons a perfect refuge from the rain. This covered ways allow people to reach all the points of the centre of city. The origin of these arcades is dated back to the Middle Age when, in a moment of great expansion of the city, Bologna became favourite destination for men of letters and for people coming from the countryside. This population growth created the necessity of exploiting the open space of the city. In the past these arcades were made of wood, nowadays they are all made of stone, except for one, the arcade of Casa Isolani in Strada Maggiore, which is still made of wood.

Jack Crawford is celebrated as a hero on Wearside for his exploits at a famous battle. Crawford was born in the East End of Sunderland and, as a youngster, worked as a keelman until 1786 when he joined the crew of the 'Peggy' at South Shields as an apprentice. It is worth bearing in mind that at this point, he was still only 12 years old!

In 1796, he was press-ganged into the Royal Navy and served on HMS Venerable under Admiral Duncan, the Royal Navy Commander-in-Chief of the North Seas.

It was Jack Crawford's actions at the Battle of Camperdown (11 October 1797) that would eventually establish him as a legend.

During the battle, part of the HMS Venerable's mast was shot down and with it, the admiral's flag. Despite being under intense gunfire, Crawford climbed the mast and nailed the colours to the top of what was left of the mast.

Later, at a victory procession in London, he was formally presented to the King and was given a government pension of £30 a year. He later received a silver medal from the people of Sunderland.

Unfortunately in later life, Jack Crawford fell on hard times. He liked a drink or two and was regularly in a state of drunkenness. Eventually, he ended up selling his medal.

Tragically, he became the second victim of the cholera epidemic of 1831 and ended up buried in an unmarked pauper's grave.

It was some years after Crawford had died, that interest in the so-called 'Hero of Camperdown' was re-kindled after a play about his life went on tour. Crawford's un-marked grave ended having a memorial headstone be-fitting a hero, not to mention a separate memorial in nearby Mowbray Park that was paid for by public donations.

ENGLISH :

... and these houses are those of the workers on the exploitation. Do not forget that we are at almost 4000 m.

EN In the north of Sweden there are several iron ore mines. Almost all of them are exploited by the state owned company LKAB.

To transport the iron ore towards the harbours of Narvik (in Norway) or Luleå (at the Gulf of Bothnia), LKAB has his own rail transport company called Malmtrafik (MTAB). MTAB transports the iron ore from the mines near Kiruna, Gällivare and Svappavaara.

MTAB uses for these heavy iron ore trains the IORE type locomotives. They are built by Adtranz (later Bombardier) which are actually two locomotives merged together two one. The IORE locomotives are currently the strongest locomotives in Europe.

In the "evening" light (~ 14.30) Malmtrafik 121 + 134 are ready for departure at Kiruna with an daily empty iron ore train from Kiruna towards the mine near Svappavaara (train 39987). At Svappavaara the train will be loaded with iron ore and then driven towards the harbour of Narvik or Luleå.

With the UFA Invasion underway, dozens of Eurasian bunkers had been raided and decimated. One base in particular, though, had an increased amount of activity. Curious of this, the UFA sent pathfinders to find out what significance this commotion was. Upon entering the facility unnoticed, a couple of rebel leaders were being tortured, and soon after one of them was executed for noncompliance. The pathfinders were shocked at this discovery, since the rebels and Eurasians shared similar goals. What was really going on? The pathfinders became unaware of their movements, and alerted the guards of their position. Communication to UFA headquarters were soon disrupted, and the secret of this seeming betrayal died after the bombing of this facility soon after.

It was the arrival of Mathieu Van Roggen, from Holland, who revitalised the CARRIÈRES DE SPRIMONT around 1880. He made them fully efficient by rationalising the operation and modernising the tool. The large power station of 1904, which became the “Stone Museum”, is a remarkable example of this. Subsequently, the Merbes-Sprimont group managed the properties until the Brancaleoni family took them over in 1984.

Several sites are currently in operation. The reputation for quality of these deposits has long been established and

their prestigious references are numerous, from the Grand’ Poste in Liège and the Fragnée bridge around 1900, to the

new cable-stayed bridge at Val-Benoît in 2000.

Significant production capacity and management flexibility are the primary assets of the Sprimont company.

This small granite quarry consists of an elongated excavation, partially occupied by the 'class III dump of Fond de Correux'. Extractive activity still takes place in the middle part and a large cutting workshop is installed towards the road. The western sector, currently disused, and the upper edges of the pit are nevertheless of biological interest: reproduction of the midwife toad and the wall lizard; inclined northern flank colonized by vegetation of calcareous substrates (e.g. Catapodium rigidum, Crepis foetida, Teucrium botrys); presence of the fern Gymnocarpium robertianum.

A basking Eastern Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis) rears up to view a perceived threat and awaits further stimuli prior to fleeing. Taken at dusk on the basalt plains above the Merri Creek corridor to the north of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
