is a municipality of Portugal, in the Setúbal District, lying at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida, a mountain range between Setúbal and Sesimbra.
Due to its particular position at the Setúbal Bay, near the mouth of the Sado River and its natural harbour, it’s an important fishing town, with a total area of 195.0 km2 (75 sq mi) and a total population of 37,567 inhabitants.
General information
Besides professional fishing and sport fishing (mainly of swordfish), the most significant revenues in Sesimbra come from tourism. The town is famous for its beaches, fish restaurants and nightlife.
The original name of Celtic origin was Cempsibriga, meaning the Burg (Briga) of the Celtic tribe the Sesim.
Close by, on a mountaintop, 240 m (787.40 ft) above sea level, lies strategically (the ruins of) the Moorish castle. It was taken from the Moors, during the Portuguese Reconquista in the year 1165 by king Afonso Henriques with the help of Frank Crusaders. The battlements afford a beautiful panorama over Sesimbra, its harbour and the surrounding countryside.
During the Age of Discoveries, Sesimbra became an important seaport. Even king Manuel I lived here for a while. In the 17th century the fort Fortaleza de Santiago was built along the beach, as part of Portugal's coastal defence. It was even used in the 18th century by Portuguese kings as a seaside retreat.
A tourist travelling to Sesimbra can appreciate its beaches, traditional fish restaurants and the Arrábida National Park.
Close to the Moorish castle is the church Nossa Senhora do Castelo. It stands on the spot where king Sancho I built a Romanesque chapel in the early 13th century, leading to the creation in 1388 of the parish of Nossa Senhora do Castelo de Sesimbra. The present church was built in 1721. When a new church was built in the village, this church passed into disuse and fell into ruins. It was restored between 1965 and 2001. The walls of the church are inlaid with beautiful azulejos. The 17th century-pulpit was made from local pink marble. The gilded triumphal arch of the 18th century-choir is decorated with Manueline motives. On the left side of the choir stands in a niche the gilded and polychromed statue of the Madonna of the Castle on a giant shell.
There is a local radio station in the municipality, Sesimbra FM.

É sede do município com o mesmo nome com 195,01 km² de área e 49 500 habitantes (2011), subdividido em 3 freguesias: Castelo, Santiago e Quinta do Conde. O município é limitado a norte pelos municípios de Almada e do Seixal, a nordeste pelo Barreiro, a leste por Setúbal e a sul e a oeste tem litoral no oceano Atlântico. A foz do rio Sado, a serra da Arrábida,o cabo Espichel e lagoa de Albufeira fazem parte da paisagem natural de Sesimbra. A terceira freguesia do municipio, designada por Quinta do Conde, tem igualmente o estatuto de Vila (homónima).
História
Em , 15 de Agosto de 1201 foi concedido aos habitantes de Sesimbra a Carta de Foral, documento régio que aplica os direitos e deveres.
Foi no reinado de D. Dinis, sexto rei de Portugal, que se criou a Póvoa de Ribeira de Sesimbra, pequena aldeia de pescadores, junto ao mar.
A aldeia cresceu muito e tornou-se vila à época dos Descobrimentos.
Sesimbra passou a ser um importante porto de construção naval e de abastecimentos de embarcações.

Built in 1811 although the station dates to 1776. The round, brick tower is 43 feet high and attached to a one story keeper's house. All the buildings are painted white. Two flashes, either white or red, depending on direction, are displayed every 15 seconds.
Located on Inner Farne Island, the island closest to the mainland, about 2 miles north of North Sunderland.

Dépaysé erkundet die enge Verbindung zwischen dem Künstler Serge Clément (*1950 in Valleyfield, Kanada) und seinem Werk. Die Ausstellung im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt präsentiert eine einzigartige Auswahl von fünfzig Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien und ein überdimensionales handgefertigtes Künstlerbuch. Diese Werke entwickelte der Künstler am Rande seiner über vierzig Jahre lang währenden Karriere als Fotograf. Serge Cléments fotografischer Ansatz liefert dichterische und kryptische Bilder, die sich zwischen Dokumentation, Installation, sozialem Kommentar und fotografischem Essay bewegen. Dies ist die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung des Künstlers in Deutschland.
Für Clément war die Fotografie schon immer eng mit dem Buch verknüpft. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der Idee, dass sich ein Bild immer auf andere Bilder bezieht. Einerseits wird damit die Idee verfolgt, dass ein Bild wie ein undichter Behälter ist; mit Rauch, Nebel, Bächen und Flüssen, Reflexionen und Straßen, die durch das Bild laufen. Andererseits hinterfragt Serge Clément mit dieser Idee die Möglichkeiten der Fotografie, die Realität einzufangen. Ein überdimensionales Buch bildet – wie im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt – oftmals den Mittelpunkt seiner Ausstellungen. Das handgemachte Objekt ohne jeglichen Text, Daten oder Hinweise auf den Ort der Aufnahme hat große biegsame Seiten, die nicht einfach zu wenden sind. In der Ausstellung wird es zusammen mit fünfzig Silbergelatine-Prints ausgestellt, die vom Künstler selbst auf Barytpapier abgezogen wurden.
Der Titel der Ausstellung Dépaysé bedeutet wörtlich übersetzt aus dem französischen „fremd“,„verloren“ oder „fehl am Platz“. Eine bestimmte Straße, eine bestimmte Perspektive, dieser verlassene Platz, die Passanten, sie alle sind nicht an eine wiedererkennbare Welt gebunden, sondern gehören in das abstrakte Universum einer eigentlich unwirklichen Stadt. Dabei sind Ort – ob Montreal, Lyon, Tokio oder New York – und Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme nicht von Bedeutung, der Betrachter soll sich vielmehr zwischen verschiedenen Orten und Zeiten verlieren. Wie eine visuelle Reise ins Zentrum der urbanen Einsamkeit und seiner Randgebiete ziehen Serge Cléments Arbeiten den Betrachter in eine intime Beziehung mit dem Bild. Dabei scheint es so als würde das Hier und Jetzt immer auf die Erinnerung eines flüchtigen Augenblicks zurückweisen, der mit einer Emotion geladen ist, die zugleich intensiv und vage ist.

The Guangzhou Ballet Troupe 广州芭蕾舞团 travelled to western Canada to perform at The Centre as part of the Vancouver Chinese Cultural Festival 2011 温哥华中国文化节 (Oct. 21-23, 2011). More than 30 dancers took part in presenting a variety of ballet dances. The last act of the evening was 梁山伯与祝英台 Shanbo Liang and Tingtai Zhu (The Butterfly Lovers). It is a very famous southern China folk lore. A Romeo and Juliet story for the Chinese audience. In ballet form, the storytelling is through choreography, movement, gesture, music, lighting and imaginative mise-en-scene. Not a single word was spoken. No translation necessary either. Quite a performance. The ‘East Meets West’ cultural exchange festival was organized by the Association of Chinese Cultural Foundation – Canada and APCEO Canada and had the support of the Chinese government (via its Embassy & Consulate General) and all levels (federal, BC provincial and city) of the Canadian government.

From photographer's notes - "This batch shows part of the old Oak Knoll line from Los Angeles to Pasadena. The Oak Knoll line was the first line to be abandoned in the Northern District (post war). It was abandoned on Oct 7, 1950 along with the Sierra Madre Line. The 1100's were my favorite PE Cars. They were purchased by a company in Argentina and ran there for years. All the other 1100's were taken off of the remaining Northern Dist. lines and replaced by Hollywood type cars.
Then there are pictures of the dismantling of the line. I know they make some people sad and they make me sad but they are part of the photographic history of the railroad. The PERY did some of the work themselves with home made equipment. Both rail and motorized. Then the heavy rail pulling was done by a primitive homemade machine and a contractor.
It must have taken a long time to build this line when it was new. I am always struck by how fast it is to dismantle a line when it is abandoned.
Notice Eng 1322 has trolley poles. It was a pure diesel engine but the poles were used to active overhead pans that worked the crossing signals."

[ENG] The Rio Dulce (Sweet river) is a small river that is born in Estriegana (Guadalajara, Spain), in the Ministra mountains to 1.212 m. of altitude, it goes through localities of the region of the Serranía (mountain range) de Guadalajara, it is a tributary for the left side of the Henares river, and this one in turn of the Jarama and of the Tajo. There is prominent its cross along the Parque Natural del Barranco del río Dulce (Nature Reserve of the Ravine of the Dulce river), where in the Pelegrina gorge it reaches his maximum altitude, and it passes for places of great environmental value, with forests of bank formed by black poplars, poplars and ash-trees, and numerous groves of evergreen oaks and gall-oak, and the bordering mounts and ravines they shelter numerous greedy that live in the rocks, such as eagles and royal owls, as well as other birds. In its waters common trout abound, that provide the food to a stable population of otters. [ENG] The town of Belchite (Zaragoza, Spain) is known for the tragic episodes that took place during the Civil War (1936-1939). On August 24, 1937 the republican offensive that triggered the Battle of Belchite began on this city in which several thousand nationalists were concentrated. Little concern the strategic objectives and the details of the fierce struggle in which aviation and the XV International Brigade (formed by Canadians, Americans and British) intervened and who fought house by house until September 6. A few months later there was a second war episode in the Batalla de Aragón, in which the advance of the revolted army, with the Italian and Moroccan corps in front, on March 9 to 11 took Belchite and other nearby municipalities. It is estimated that there were more than five thousand deaths between civilians and soldiers of both sides. At the end of the war, with the town practically destroyed, the inhabitants were gradually abandoned to move to Belchite Nuevo. More photographs in the album Belchite, a story not to forget
[ESP] El Convento de San Rafael se sitúa junto a la iglesia de San Martín, encajado entre las casas. Perteneció a la orden religiosa de las Dominicas de San Rafael. Desde 1781, año de inauguración del convento, fue centro de enseñanza para niños pobres. La iglesia tiene tres naves de tres tramos, con un vestíbulo de acceso en los pies, sobre el que está el coro. El espacio central está cubierto por una gran cúpula sobre pechinas. Todo el conjunto está construido usando machones de ladrillo con cerramientos de mampostería careada, y su estilo es de transición entre la tradición arquitectónica y la decoración barroca y los nuevos gustos neoclásicos del siglo XVIII.
El pueblo de Belchite (Zaragoza, España) es conocido por los trágicos episodios sucedidos durante la Guerra Civil (1936-1939). El 24 de agosto de 1937 se inició la ofensiva republicana que desencadenó la Batalla de Belchite sobre esta ciudad en la que se concentraban varios miles de nacionalistas. Poco importan los objetivos estratégicos y los detalles de la encarnizada lucha en la que intervino la aviación y la XV Brigada internacional (formada por canadienses, americanos y británicos) y que se libró casa por casa hasta el 6 de septiembre. Unos meses después se vivió un segundo episodio bélico en la Batalla de Aragón, en la que el avance del ejército franquista, con los cuerpos italianos y marroquís al frente, en los días 9 a 11 de marzo tomaron Belchite y otros municipios cercanos. Se calcula que hubo más de cinco mil muertos entre civiles y militares de ambos bandos. A finalizar la guerra, con el pueblo prácticamente destrozado, los habitantes fueron abandonado paulatinamente para trasladarse a Belchite Nuevo. [ENG] The Rio Dulce (Sweet river) is a small river that is born in Estriegana (Guadalajara, Spain), in the Ministra mountains to 1.212 m. of altitude, it goes through localities of the region of the Serranía (mountain range) de Guadalajara, it is a tributary for the left side of the Henares river, and this one in turn of the Jarama and of the Tajo. There is prominent its cross along the Parque Natural del Barranco del río Dulce (Nature Reserve of the Ravine of the Dulce river), where in the Pelegrina gorge it reaches his maximum altitude, and it passes for places of great environmental value, with forests of bank formed by black poplars, poplars and ash-trees, and numerous groves of evergreen oaks and gall-oak, and the bordering mounts and ravines they shelter numerous greedy that live in the rocks, such as eagles and royal owls, as well as other birds. In its waters common trout abound, that provide the food to a stable population of otters. In Pelegrina's Gorge numerous chapters of the Iberian series of The Man and the Earth were filmed, directed by the naturalist Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente. (Source: Wikipedia)

Además, constituye el hábitat de una pequeña población de desmán de los Pirineos, y los montes y barrancos aledaños albergan numerosas rapaces rupícolas, tales como águilas perdiceras, águilas reales y búhos reales, así como córvidos. En sus aguas abundan las truchas comunes, de las que se alimenta la estable población de nutrias.
