A student talks about his team's project, "Payload Hauler Omni Directional (PHOD)," sponsored by Nearth. The team included mechanical engineers Alex Koslov, Jay Stillmun and Andrew Timmons, and was asked to improve upon a payload hauling device designed to transport things up and down shafts. The students focused on reducing drivetrain complexity, enclosing components and creating an easy way to use payload.
Students demonstrate the "Lirik," a tablet for sheet music that turns the page by tracking a person's eyes. The students combined a webcam and a desktop computer on Linux to develop their proof-of-concept prototype.

For our day in port at Ravenna, Mike and I booked a walking tour that featured some of the city's most famous attractions. Our final destination was the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Via di Roma 52). Here, you can see a painting displayed in one of the side chapels located along the left (north) side of the basilica.
Erected by the Ostrogoth king Theodoric as his palace chapel, the church was constructed circa 500 A.D. and was originally used as a Palatine church of Arian religion. In the mid-6th century, the church was reconsecrated under the Byzantine rule of Justinian I and dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. It was subsequently renamed in honor of Saint Apollinaris when his relics were moved here in 856.
Numerous renovations were made over the centuries. While the basilica's famous mosaics date to the Arian and Byzantine eras (6th century), the apse was decorated in the baroque style and other features date to more recent periods. A series of side chapels span the left (north) side of the church. This particular chapel features an altar dedicated to the Virgin and Child and related paintings displayed on the side walls. This painting depicts the birth of the Virgin Mary to St. Anne, and possibly dates to the 17th century. Alas, I wasn't able to find any details on the basilica's side chapels or the art/sculpture displayed within them, so I'm not sure who created the painting or when it was completed.

Et høyt og karakteristisk gress langs elver og innsjøer er takrør (Phragmites australis). Gresset er mye brukt som byggemateriale og til stråtak på hus typisk for bl. a Tyskland, Danmark og Skåne i Sverige. Det er stråets evne til å lede vannet vekk som gjør det til et ypperlig taktekke. Et godt stråtak kan fint vare i over 50 år.
I blomstringstiden er det et vakkert gress som pynter opp rundt vann og elver. Akset er duskete. Bladene 2-3 cm brede og opptil 50 cm lange er opprette eller utsående sitter enkeltvise oppetter stengelen. Stenglene har ledd slik som bambus.
Jordstengelen er krypende.
Dette gresset er også populær blant enkelte fuglearter som både spiser frøene og finner skjul i det tette bladverket.

Crime and Punishment location. The Horse Guards Blvd. The place where the scene with "drunk girl" takes place. I’ll spare you the long quote, I'm sure anyone interested can find the chapter and read. In short - Raskolnikov noticed the girl, she looked strange, it was clear that something bad had happened to her and also there was a creepy guy there. "The boulevard was generally deserted and there was almost no one about. And yet, a short distance away... a gentleman had stopped, who by all evidence would also have liked very much to approach the girl with certain intentions." That creep was waiting for Raskolnikov to leave but he didn't leave. Raskolnikov found a policeman, gave him money to hire a coachman to take her home, etc etc. Anyway, this is an interesting scene. It characterizes the main character and shows how women were looked upon by the society of that time, how they were treated. This is an interesting place, both on the boulevard and in the book.

Места из "Преступления и наказания". Конногвардейский бульвар. Интересен он тем, что тут произошла сцена, в которой Раскольников встретил "пьяную девушку". Если не цитировать несколько страниц, то в двух словах - он заметил некую девушку, и видно было, что она не в себе и с ней случилось что-то плохое. Заметил он еще и крипового типа, который тоже шел за ней на некотором расстоянии, но не подходил, ждал пока Родя уйдет. Родя же не ушел, нашел городового, стал трясти его, чтоб тот занялся этим делом, дал ему денег нанять извозчика доставить ее домой и т.д. Короче говоря, сцена хороша тем, что характеризует главного героя, а так же, показывает трагичное положение женщин в то время, включая рассуждение про жуткую статистику. Интересное место - и на бульваре и в книге.
