SURGICAL AID: Working for Cardica, Nate White ’99 engineers instruments for heart bypass surgeries.

At the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft is positioned beneath space shuttle Discovery in the mate-demate device. Discovery will be lowered and mated to the aircraft in preparation for its departure from Kennedy on Tuesday. The device, known as the MDD, is a large gantry-like steel structure used to hoist a shuttle off the ground and position it onto the back of the aircraft, or SCA. The SCA is a Boeing 747 jet, originally manufactured for commercial use, which was modified by NASA to transport the shuttles between destinations on Earth. The SCA designated NASA 905 is assigned to the remaining ferry missions, delivering the shuttles to their permanent public display sites. NASA 905 is scheduled to ferry Discovery to the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia on April 17, after which the shuttle will be placed on display in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

British soldiers from the BRF (Brigade Reconnaissance Force) conduct a 12 hour helicopter born operation in the Nahr-e Seraj district of Helmand. The BRF mission was to cordon and search compounds of interest in order to disrupt insurgents IED (Improvised Explosive Devices) facilitation and command and control nodes.
The BRF are a combined unit formed up of soldiers from the 1st The Queenís Dragoon Guards (The Welsh Cavalry) and 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (1 Yorks).

It's hard for me to imagine the amount of electronic design and engineering that went into a complex circuit like this. Not to mention the natural resources and labor. It's the soldered side of the main circuit board for one of those popular bookshelf size stereo systems, circa late 1990's. The sound may not have been stunning, but it wasn't all that bad either. And, those systems really had a lot to offer as far as features -- "bells and whistles."
Is a product like this "good" in more basic, essential ways though? The main problem I see -- over and over -- is that when something goes bad with it, there's no fixing it, practically speaking. Out to the curb it goes and from there perhaps to the landfill. Time to go get a new one. It'll be better anyway. It'll be cool.

Looking up from my journal writing this morning, I saw this....the younger twins were with their devices and playing an interactive gave on the tv monitor, completely engaged and unaware that I was in the room. I love listening to their 'twin' banter!

July 14, 2011 - Buffalo: Governor Andrew M. Cuomo travels to Erie County to sign a new law that strengthens the enforcement against drivers who use handheld electronic devices while their vehicle is in motion. The legislation makes actions like texting while driving a primary traffic offense, giving law enforcement the power to stop drivers solely for engaging in this activity. Governor Cuomo signed the law at Erie Community College at an event with local law enforcement and community members.
The Governor also announced that he will increase the penalty for using a cellular phone without a hands-free device or an electronic handheld device while driving from two to three points through changes in state regulations.
This is a photograph from the 2nd running of the Donadea Running Club 5KM race in Donadea Forest, Donadea, Staplestown, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Friday 26th of July 2013 at 19:30. This race is part of the North Kildare Summer Running League Series of races. There was great athlete and participant support from the neighbouring clubs of Celbridge, Kilcock, Leixlip, Naas, Newbridge, and beyond. The race route is contained completely in the forest on the trail paths. The 5KM route is ran in a clockwise direction from the coffee shop at the center of the forest. The combination of a warm pleasant July evening and the wonderful surroundings make this a very unique race on the running calendar in this part of Leinster.
Donadea Forest Park is located in north west Co. Kildare close to the border with County Meath. It is about 50 kilometers from Dublin. The forest is now a very mature forest with a vast array of habitats and a lake. It is over 640 acres in size. The Park is managed by Coillte.
Well done to all of the Donadea Running Club and the local community who yet again have organised an excellent event.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: Approximately 250 people took part in today's races with runners, joggers, walkers, and families involved.
Weather: This was a warm pleasant summer's evening in the forest. The 19:30 start avoided a very heavy and prolonged shower of rain which made the course a little wet in places.
Course: This is a very well known loop of the Donadea forest. It starts at the coffee shop area near and lake and proceeds on what is locally known as the 'outer' loop of the forest in a clockwise direction. The direction is opposite to that used in the Donadea 10KM and Donadea 50KM races.

Refreshments: A great spread of refreshments were provided afterwards in the open area beside the Coffee Shop.

All being built and developed by Oogie and Ken- the white "gun" contains a bluetooth reader that registers an ID from a tag on a sheep's ear. The Android handheld (actually a device designed for kids) contains a database app for recording and saving all the vitals as measured in the field.
