"This model is an example of a self moving car, to which several mechanisms known to and used by Leonardo were applied (leaf spring and geared wheels in particular). The car operated through a system implying the hand-loading of the leaf springs. These transmitted the stored power to the driving wheels by means of a complicated set of gears. He also incorporated a small rudder-wheel to steer the car."
What they fail to mention is that this was actually much more then a spring driven automobile, but was in fact a programmable automaton. By switching out a series of cams one could make the car do any preprogrammed movements one chose. This represents a piece of programmable automata hundreds of years before the Jaqquard loom, the Babbage engine or enlightenment era stuff.
Unfortunately it looked like they constructed this without those cams, turning it into simply a spring loaded car.
Seen at the "Machines of Leonardo da Vinci" exhibit in Florence, Italy. The exhibit housed over 40 models of mechanical, building, flying and war machines. They were replicated exactly from his codices by florentine artisans under engineer supervision.

Day-lit museums – many have taken the form of intricate complex devices for the destruction of light. Natural, living daylight was the aim from the outset. Soane’s experiments – as can be seen in his house in London – provided a more suitable guide than the comparatively more clouded treatment of the topic by Schinkel and all his admirers to the present day.
Light pours in like water through a sieve, flooding all the surfaces of the rooms. The play and insight of the objects and pictures in the light should be seen as the decisive quality of the new building. Thus, the architect’s intention here was not to erect an art temple, a Domus Aurea – the aim was to create a Domus Lux, a house of light.
To conclude: as long as space is almost always the result and not the aim of structural, organisational, geometric or stylistic goals, as long as architecture is dominated by the ‘unessential’, the absence of original, suggestive spatial quality will be coupled – particularly in museum buildings – with an excess of so-called architecture. In response to the zigzag and shipshape little follies which are flooding the architectural market, Markus Lüpertz demands that ‘architecture must have the greatness to present itself in such a way that it can accommodate art, and that it does not drive art away through its own claims’. This concern was not part of our conscious architectural intentions, however during the entire time taken to plan the gallery, it was there at the back of our minds.
The building proved it wrong. When it was finally opened we, at least, were satisfied when the curator wandering through the exhibition joined Franz Kafka in saying: ‘The nicest thing about my building is its silence!’
Prior to World War II and the invention of radar, acoustic mirrors were built as early warning devices around the coasts of Great Britain, with the aim of detecting airborne invasions. The most famous of these devices still stand at Denge on the Dungeness peninsula and at Hythe in Kent. Other examples exist in other parts of Britain (including Sunderland, Redcar, Boulby, Kilnsea) and Selsey Bill, and in Malta.
The Dungeness mirrors, known colloquially as the "listening ears", consist of three large concrete reflectors built in the 1920s–1930s. Their experimental nature can be discerned by the different shapes of each of the three reflectors: one is a long, curved wall about 5 m high by 70 m long, while the other two are dish-shaped constructions approximately 4–5 m in diameter. Microphones placed at the foci of the reflectors enabled a listener to detect the sound of aircraft several kilometres out in the English Channel. The reflectors are not parabolic as sometimes imagined, but are in fact hemispherical mirrors. This design element is their genius, because in addition to being able to detect range (over 30 km, or 20 statute miles, on a good day), they could also detect direction.
Acoustic mirrors had a limited effectiveness, and the increasing speed of aircraft in the 1930s meant that they would already be too close to deal with by the time they had been detected. The development of radar put an end to further experimentation with the technique. Nevertheless, there were long-lasting benefits. The acoustic mirror programme, led by Dr William Sansome Tucker, had given Britain the methodology to use interconnected stations to pin point the position of an enemy in the sky. The system they developed for linking the ranging stations and plotting aircraft movements was given to the early radar team and contributed to their success in WW2; although the British radar was less sophisticated than the German system, the British system was used more successfully.
Acoustic lenses similar to acoustic mirrors are used today as novelty items — "whisper dishes" — in science museums to allow patrons to whisper across long distances, for example at Ontario Science Centre and San Francisco's Exploratorium[1]. Such whisper dishes must be parabolic for greatest effect.
Parabolic microphones appear to use acoustic mirror properties but instead depend on a parabolic dish to reflect sound coming from a specific direction into the microphone placed at the foci. Because of their small, portable size, they can easily be used in the same manner as acoustic mirrors for detection and direction finding of distant noise sources.

February 13th 2013: One of the most important things we take for granted are our digital data storage devices. Ironically we have all experienced 'data loss' in some form somewhere. Whether at work or school we depend on these little storage devices, like our lives depend on them. Consider having a back up of a back up? I do that with my images. I have images dating back to 2004 and earlier. I am definitely guilty of that. But I have managed to keep my storage devices in good shape over the course of many years by following some simple rules. Formatting, getting rid of really HUGE files or putting large files on a separate external. Just keeping things simple and organized goes a long way. Save yourself the trouble, invest in good storage devices. I read a lot of reviews from people who spend their hard earned money on these items before investing my own. At the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft is positioned beneath space shuttle Discovery in the mate-demate device. Discovery will be lowered and mated to the aircraft in preparation for its departure from Kennedy on Tuesday. The device, known as the MDD, is a large gantry-like steel structure used to hoist a shuttle off the ground and position it onto the back of the aircraft, or SCA. The SCA is a Boeing 747 jet, originally manufactured for commercial use, which was modified by NASA to transport the shuttles between destinations on Earth. The SCA designated NASA 905 is assigned to the remaining ferry missions, delivering the shuttles to their permanent public display sites. NASA 905 is scheduled to ferry Discovery to the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia on April 17, after which the shuttle will be placed on display in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. BEEF... it's not just for dinner anymore.
"Beef" is a plot device - a highly antagonistic relationship between characters that is used to move a narrative forward. With that in mind, today I'll be looking at the S.H. Figuarts Resurrection Freeza (or Frieza) figure.
Freeza is a long standing villain in the Dragonball universe. While most recently seen (at least to me) in the Dragonball Super "Tournament of Power" arc, Freeza was introduced way back in the Z series as the one responsible for t e destruction of Planet Vegeta (Saiyan homeworld) and the total domination of countless planets, eventually being the self proclaimed Emperor of the Universe.
He was first defeated by Goku after a LENGTHY fight on Planet Namek (and I do mean long.. long a weeks worth of episodes long), and was obliterated in about 5 minutes after Future Trunks first appeared before the Cell Games.
Freeza I would describe as a melodramatic drama queen, and considers himself superior to all living being in the universe.. so naturally he's a fan favourite. To the point where his movie on resurrection was written officially into canon. While the universe now has its genocidal madman to deal with, this madman owes Goku a solid, and it'll be interesting to see where things go from here.
Resurrection Freeza is actually the third issue of the original 2014 Final Form Freeza toy. It features the same body with new heads, slightly fewer accessories, and a very lame base. You get the figure, three heads/expressions (smirk, open mouth, gritted teeth), a Halo, some additional hands (closed fist pair, open palm pair, open hand pair, two different pointed right hands), two total pairs of feet (one for the ground, one for floating). two tails (one for standing, one for floating poses, the latter of which can be segmented to replicate battle damage), crossed arms effect, Death Ball and Death Beam attack effects, and the standard Tamashii Nations transparent base.
A pretty good stack of goodies, but I can sort of see if you had the OG you'd probably not be rushing out to upgrade. While you get new heads, you lose the neat rock base, which also had special feet for standing on it.
One of the first things I noticed upon opening and assembling the figure is that geting Freeze to stand without support requires Freeze to lean forward a bit to counteract the weight of the attached tail, which doesn't bother some people but just drives me insane. If only the tail were slightly longer, you could have used it to balance the figure. But, the way it stands, it's about 1/8 inch short.
I think the new heads are slightly larger than the old ones, which is fine as I found the original figures to be kind of undersized. I guess this increase alone was enough to keep Freeza in line with the rest of the 2.0 line up. Oh speaking of which, this is "Resurrection Freeza" as it comes with a halo, which is how the Dragonball universe shows a character is dead. Strangely though, it only works with his smirking face, which I don't understand why.
I also don't understand why Freeza only came with one stand, seeing how annoying it is to actually pose the figure without one, and how having one is mandatory for the Death Beam effect - the Death Ball clips onto the wrist.
From an articulation perspective, it's not bad but you're looking at first generation Dragonball body, which means it's not going to be as refined and will have more limitations on range of motion. You get ankles, double jointed knees, hips, waist, mid torso, shoulders with slight chest compress, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, wrists, limited neck movement, and head articulation. There's also a single point (or two if you're using the floating one) of articulation for the tail. As stated above, you'd do have most of the standard points, but do the nature of the cuts in the body the actual quality of the pose you're trying to pull off will vary.
Paint wise, Freeza is beautiful. Nice metallic purple with a matte white, featuring some subtle blue paint apps to serve as highlights. Paint applications are even and paint masking for the most part is razor sharp, especially where it counts, with some very minor masking deficiencies otherwise. Decal work and other small details are nicely done.
Build quality wise is strangely not quite up to par. Overall, most of the usual criteria are addressed - good choice of materials, no issues with limb length or joint strength, and the only real area with gap issues is the arms, which is understandable given the interchangeable nature of the parts there. The issue is that the tail joint doesn't like to stay in place, resulting in it falling out very easily, which is annoying to saying the least because not only do you lose the tail, but the entire figure will topple over due to loss of mass.
Overall, it's nice to have a Freeza in the collection, and while I would have liked to have the rock base, the screaming face is a good trade off... I'm gonna have me some fun with that. As always, while the figures generally will keep flowing here, I've got no clue what is coming next for this property in particular.. also this whole Covid thing makes buying figures like this a bit challenging, but hey, I've got some decent backlog to burn through.
Besides.. "challenging" isn't "impossible", so as always, stay tuned.

What was life like on a Russian North Pole Drifting Station? Some scientists and researchers were kind enough to lend us photographs, taken on various stations.
An IVO device for measuring the base height of cloud cover. IVO is the Russian abbreviation for this instrument.
Just prior to the start of World War II, the USSR set up a research camp on drifting ice near the North Pole in 1937. The drift continued for 274 days during which the station travelled more the 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles), obtaining the first scientific observations from that high latitude. In 1950, USSR set up a second station. Between 1937 to 1991, 88 polar crews drifted on ice flows for a total of 29,726 days. This research program is unequalled in the 20th century by duration, variety of observational material, and importance of scientific discoveries. On average researchers spent nine months at each camp.

Cuomo signs a new law that strengthens the enforcement against drivers who use handheld electronic devices for activities such as texting while a vehicle is in motion. The legislation makes this action a primary traffic offense, giving law enforcement the power to stop drivers solely for engaging in this activity.
The Governor also announced that he will increase the penalty for using a cellular phone without a hands-free device or a handheld device while driving from two to three points through changes in state regulations.
White Sands Missile Range Museum
Used at White Sands Missile Range until the early 1960s, this device originally obtained performance data on captured V-2 (Vengeance Weapon 2) rockets brought to what was then White Sands Proving Ground at the end of World War 2. Designed and built in Germany by Askania Werke in the late 1930s, this Askania Model GTK-40 used 35mm film to collect and record vertical rise, distance, position, velocity, and acceleration of the V-2 upon launch. Like many other cinetheodolite configurations of the time, this system required two operators- one to track azimuth (distance in angular degrees) and one to track elevation (vertical rise) of the V-2. Scientific breakthroughs, provided by instruments such as this, were crucial to the success of future rocket development at White Sands.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I have designed all four riders of Revelation 06 to appear in four different pictures, as there are many elements that I wanted to include, and I thought putting them all in one picture would make that scene far too busy and full! By drawing each of the four riders in separate scenes, the viewer gets to focus on each one I turn. Many artists group all four riders together into a single picture... perhaps I’ll do that in future versions.
There are two versions of this scene:
01) (This page) Revelation 06 - The Scroll seals - Scene 04 - Fourth seal: Pale rider (with scroll).
02) (Next page) Revelation 06 - The Scroll seals - Scene 04 - Fourth seal: Pale rider (without scroll).
The main difference between the two versions is the inclusion or absence of the 7 seal scroll in the bottom left corner of the scene. I wondered if it might detract from the overall impact of the scene for some viewers, hence its absence in the 2nd version.
The (without scroll) version also has a more faded background, to make the horse and rider stand out more on the page.
When the fourth seal was opened, a pale horse came forth. The word “pale” is a little misleading, as we would naturally think that means white, grey, or some other off-shite colour. In fact “pale” literally means pale green, and is the same word used in reference to vegetation; eg in Mark 6:39; where Jesus directed the 5,000 men to sit on the green grass. Having read that description, I decided to make the horse and rider the colour of diseased, gangrenous flesh. You can see through the horses and rider’s transparent skin, to the bones, blood vessels and tissues beneath.
Verse 8 states that “Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.” I don’t think this is the personification of death and Hades, but rather a poetic device to indicate the severity of the fourth rider’s effect upon the earth. Hades was the name the Greek and Roman’s called their “god” of the underworld and he was the ruler of the dead. The underworld itself was also known to the Greeks as Hades. I think this may mean that after the first three riders, who brought war, famine, and death, then people will fall prey to a plague and pestilence. Also the wild beasts of the earth (carnivores like lions, hyenas, tigers, etc) will increase in numbers and take advantage to kill human beings.
In the last sentence of verse 8 it is revealed that a fourth of the earth will be killed by this fourth rider. This certainly seems to support the conclusion that the Great Tribulation has begun: an unprecedented time of trouble on earth (see Jeremiah 30:7 *1; Daniel 12:1 *2; Matthew 24:21-22 *3).
I have added the steel armoured head piece on the horse, in keeping with the other horses in the previous scenes. The rider carries a bone handled scythe and is wearing a dark cloaked costume, to increase the sense of brooding doom about to come upon the earth.
Notice that the foreground and right side of the mid and background has wild flowers, grass and trees, and looks very picturesque, but where the horse and rider have been the grass and flowers are rapidly dying, in a “v” shaped pathway of death, behind them. The sky on the right is blue with small clouds, whereas the left hand side of the sky is dark with green, deep violet and black storm clouds gathering, which further indicates the calamity about to be unleashed upon the earth.

The Digilent Electronics Explorer board (EE board) includes all of the test and measurement equipment needed to design, build, and test analog and digital circuits of all types. Built around a large solderless breadboard, the EE board includes a 4-channel mixed-signal USB oscilloscope, waveform generator, variable power supply, voltmeter, reference voltage generator, and thirty-two digital signals that can be configured as a logic analyzer, pattern generator, or any one of several static digital I/O devices. All of these instruments can be connected to circuits built on the solderless breadboards using simple jumper wires.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

I liked the look of all of the head stabilizers behind the wire chairs.
No, these are not actually torturous. These are here because it's impossible to sit still long enough for the amount of time necessary to get a proper exposure. If you don't use a brace, then the picture will be blurry. I once heard a museum volunteer tell visitors that women were forced to "endure" these. Nope. No enduring, and not just for women.
