A suspicious device was across the street from Toys R Us. They blocked off one of the entrances to the Lakeland Square Mall. Lakeland Police was first on scene. LPD doesn't have a bomb squad, so they had to wait on TPD's bomb squad to arrive. After close investigation, it was determined to be a low jack device beeping because the vehicle it was taken off of, was stolen.

Another image from Mill Meece Pumping Station, Staffordshire.
In case anyone is interested, Mill Meece are hosting an open evening on Friday 16th May between 18:00 and 22:00 when the station will be lit by oil lamps to create an ambient atmosphere.
I have contacted the organisers to ask whether a) photographers are welcome and b) can we use tripods in the low lighting. They are more than happy with both. If you plan to go then I look forward to seeing you there.
BTW I am not associated with MMPS in any way other than living nearby and visiting whenever I can.

With the new Biopic "Oppenheimer" coming to most theaters today I thought it might be interesting to have a look at the Trinity Device aka known as The Gadget the output product of The Manhattan Project. Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear weapon. It was conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. MWT (11:29:21 GMT) on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project with a yield of energy equivalent to 24.8 ± 2 kilotons of TNT.
After the successful test Oppenheimer is said to have quoted a passage from the Hindu scripture, the "Bhagavad Gita;" "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
This inert model of the Trinity Device is located at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.
There's a minor pond in a little town in Frederick County, Maryland that gave me a huge but simple scene to photograph
while back in the eastern US for the holidays.
Angles Pond was the name I gave this little water feature on the edge of a charming town called Burkittsville, in Maryland. There are a lot of angles in this particular capture, and I chose to name the pond after the photo's character, primarily so I'll remember it
far into the future.
I have a great many photographs of ponds, each one with a different name and, as such, a different and unique identification.
Angles Pond is now added to that list. So far this mnemonic device is working pretty well.

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. So much of our life is now experienced through screens of various sizes and this shot captured my imagination for that narrative. The eye contact from the woman on the bench was unexpected as she was equally engrossed in her 'device' just a beat before I clicked the shutter.

"incendiary devices" going off around the Annapolis/Baltimore area at various state headquarters today....
it's complicated
"I mean, I don’t know how the world broke. And I don’t know if there’s a God who can help us fix it. But the fact that the world is broken - I absolutely believe that. Just look around us. Every minute - every single second - there are a million things you could be thinking about. A million things you could be worrying about. Our world - don’t you just feel we’re becoming more fragmented? I used to think that when I got older, the world would make so much more sense. But you know what? The older I get, the more confusing it is to me. The more complicated it is. Harder. You’d think we’d be getting better at it. But there’s just more and more chaos. The pieces - they’re everywhere. And nobody knows what to do about it. I find myself grasping, Nick. You know that feeling? That feeling when you just want the right thing to fall into the right place, not only because it’s right, but because it would mean that such a thing is still possible? I want to believe that."

Nach mühevoller Aussortierung meiner Kodachrome Dias wurde dieses Teil wieder aktiviert. Ein Novoflex-Balgengerät und dem Zeiss Planar 50mm f2 von der Contarex. Mittels Adapter adaptiert an meine SONY a7R.
Die Dias einfach in den Müll....nein, zu viele Erinnerungen an jedes einzelne.
NOVOFLEX bellows with DIA duplicator
After painstakingly sorting out my Kodachrome slides, this part was activated again. A Novoflex bellows and the Zeiss Planar 50mm f2 from Contarex. Adapted to my SONY a7R with an adapter.
Just throw the slides in the trash...no, too many memories of each one.

A contraption is a device that seems unusually complicated ... for many a crochet hook is just such a device!
As a historian, I just had to seek out the history of this interesting device. The art of crochet arrived in the West around 1500 through China, India, and Persia . "And how about the crochet tool? Today we walk into a yarn shop or Walmart and purchase aluminum, plastic or steel hooks available in more than 25 sizes. In earlier times, however, they used whatever they could get their hands on - fingers first, then hooks made of metal, wood, fishbone, animal bone, horn, old spoons, teeth from discarded combs, brass, mother-of-pearl, morse (walrus tusk), tortoiseshell, ivory, copper, steel, vulcanite, ebonite, silver and agate." -Ruthie Marks, A History of Crochet.
Disappeared Quipu is a poem in space-a time-based work in dialogue with historical quipus ("knot"in Quechua).
For millennia ancient people's of the Andes created quipus:complex record- keeping devices that served as an essential medium for reading and writing, registering and remembering, through an intricate system of knot making. In a career spanning five decades the artist, poet, and filmmaker Cecelia Vicuña has transformed the rich cultural legacies of the Andean region, reimagining the historical within jet contemporary practice. With feminism as a unifying theme and her ongoing series of work called Precarious (Precario) as a conceptual precursor, she explores the shifting nature of language and memory;the resilience of native people in the face of repression;and her own experiences, living in exile from her native Chile, following the military coup of 1973.
Vicuña has devoted a significant part of her artistic practice studying, interpreting, and reactivating the multidimensional potential of the quipu and it's ritual aspect, banned by the Spanish during their colonization of South America.Drawing from her indigenous heritage she creates installations and transformative ritual performances address issues of homogenization, ecological disasters, and human rights.Disappeared Quipu is part of decades-long explorations that often includes activation by the artist,in which she moves, alone or with others, among the fibers and knotted strands of the work, linking movement, sound and material to enact a physical relationship with the legacy embodied by the quipu. For Vicuña each knot of her "quipus for the future"bears witness to the connection and collective and expressive capacities of a language largely lost to history.
Created specially for this project calls attention to the disappearance of knowledge through the loss of a complex, ancient textile tradition.Vicuña's work links people of the past, present, and future in a collective art of resistance and remembrance celebrating the centuries long cultural legacy of the Andean people.

"The Time-Turner is a device capable of time travel. The Time-Turner resembled an hourglass on a necklace. The number of times one turns the hourglass corresponds to the number of hours one travels back in time. It is extremely important that the user of a Time-Turner not be seen by past or future versions of themselves."
#195/365 So the theme of this week is Harry Potter. The 3 subtle clues to yesterday's shot was...#1 The Projector was displaying the title across my wife. #2 My wife was wearing the time-turner (as seen here). #3 The title was "The Secret Riddle" which is the 13th chaper of the Half-Blood Prine (yesterday was also Monday the 13th). There you have it..in honor of the new movie which comes out this week. Happy Harry Potter Tuesday.
