Dr. George Pantalos, bioengineering and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery professor with the UofL Cardiovascular Innovation Institute, in September took four UofL students to Houston where they conducted more tests in zero-gravity on the astrosurgery device he is developing with researchers at Carnegie Melon. This was the third time since 2012 that Dr. Pantalos and his research team tested the device in zero-G. The device is the Aqueous Immersion Surgical System – a water- and airtight-device that isolates surgical incisions and controls bleeding in a zero-gravity environment. The device seeks to control the escape of blood and bodily fluids in this environment, currently impossible to do. The ultimate goal is to develop a system that long-range space flights (such as to Mars) could use if surgery is needed onboard the spacecraft. However, applications on Earth for the device would be when sterile conditions are hard to come by, such as in war zones or areas where medical facilities are not present.

Saturday, February 13, 2010, the Task Force Lafayette led a major route reconnaissance along the MSR VERMONT between forward operating base and the town of Nijrab Mahmud-e-Raqia. The area has become dangerous since the explosion of two improvised explosive devices (IED - IED), the means used were consistent.
Captain V., coordinator of the Engineering Brigade, details all of his device: "For this mission we have set up a section of engineers of Task Force BLACK ROCK, posting Route Opening (DOI) composed of Buffalo, and the Souvim Lemir, two teams of specialized operational searches (FOS), a team WIT (Weapon intelligence team) and finally the elements of observation and clearance (EOD).
To ensure the smooth running of the mission, the infantry platoons were deployed around the axis to create a security cordon. In addition, direct support platoon consists of three equipped with VAB 20 mm cannon, a turret VAB TV and made an AMX 10RC providing coverage at close range while the 120 mm mortar stand ready to act further in the device. In total more than 400 French soldiers and Afghan are present along the road.
The mission can begin. Lt. S., advisor to the Task Force FSO BLACK ROCK, explains in detail the purpose of his mission: "Part of the asphalt road is too thick to detect any son, my team will probe the vicinity of axis focusing on the great discovery that connects the lines. Here, our sensor cable is able to locate a possible line of fire and then by estimating the angle, we can identify the location of IEE. If this is the case and that the explosive device is visible we'll call the EOD team. If it is buried in the earth, the Buffalo can intervene.
Finally any IED only be detected. Used to secure the logistics convoys VULCAIN Task Force on the road, the IC of the Route Opening explains: "This operation is crucial for two reasons. First it shows the locals that we are active against the threat and secondly, it allows the avoidance of doubt on the presence of IEDs son and therefore sleeping. This reassures us that we are doing this trip regularly.
Having surveyed the roadside more than 3 km for several hours, the engineers removed any suspected improvised explosive device in the area. However we must remain vigilant as confirmed by the coordinator of the Engineering Brigade: "the route is clear but there is nothing that says that tomorrow or in three days it will still be the case, he must either post elements monitoring before the passage of a convoy or redo a route reconnaissance.

The annual two-day event assembled more than 350 invited participants from the federal government, private industry, professional sports, medical research, caregivers and Veteran communities to collaborate and advance discussions around the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. “We have an unbelievable opportunity to accelerate the speed of change,” said retired Army Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, CEO of Optum Military and Veterans Group, to the 15 industry and academic innovators who had come to pitch their ideas on TBI and head trauma to a panel of judges. “Today, the impossible gets challenged.”After reviewing a series of short presentations from competitors, the judges selected three winners: The Daptly Display, a gesture and voice-controlled assistant for the home or office; Save a Warrior: A peer-to-peer, archetypal approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury; and Recovery Acceleration Program for mild TBI by King-Devick Technologies. The winners will have the potential opportunity to implement and deploy their innovations with VA. “We feel incredibly honored to be selected as a winner of the VA Innovation awards, which will further our opportunity to provide services to our Veterans,” said Steve Devick, CEO of King-Devick Technologies, who explained how his project would help Veterans impacted by TBI. “The King-Devick technologies innovations are related to the fact that eye movements and vision are responsible for approximately 55 percent of brain function. “As a result, implementing our recovery acceleration program by involving these pathways leads to faster concussions and TBI recovery when used with standard remediation. Additionally, caregivers can measure defects in eye movements, which may lead to dosage changes in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. ” During the event, VA officials announced key partnerships with several influential organizations, including: Amazon, which donated 100 Echo devices with Alexa voice service to VA’s Assistive Technology Labs to help meet the needs of Veterans; Cohen Veterans Bioscience, which is coordinating efforts with VA to integrate data across dozens of labs to facilitate breakthroughs in trauma-related disorders; Booz Allen Hamilton; Comcast; Concussion Legacy Foundation; GE; IBM; Infinite Hero Foundation; Johnson & Johnson; Optum; Outward Bound; PenFed Foundation, Philips; the Warrior Care Network and the National Institutes of Health, which is co-hosting a ‘State of the Science’ workshop in 2018 that will focus on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases. Godzilla has been frozen in an iceberg but is awoken through nuclear heat. At the same time an evil Japanese busines man transports King Kong to Japan from the Pacific island where he has been considered a monkey god.
The two monsters meet twice, King Kong eventually saving Japan by drowning Godzilla before escaping to sea, swimming towards his beloved island.

‘Unique’ bird migration discovered
A tracking device which weighs less than a paperclip has helped scientists uncover what they say is one of the world’s great bird migrations. It was attached to a red-necked phalarope from Scotland that migrated thousands of miles west across the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The journey has never before been recorded for a European breeding bird.

Red-necked Phalarope use many coastal areas, like the recent Coastal Grant recipient in Harpswell Maine (www.fws.gov/gomcp/) as stopover habitat during their migration. Three M.A.D. (Magnetic Acoustic Devices) from HPV Technologies (www.getmad.us), during a demo for military, law enforcement, and government tech experts from the US and abroad, at Edwards Air Force Base in Palmdale (Sep 1, 2005). The devices are capable of broadcasting a highly focused, "laser-like" beam of sound in such a way that it is intelligible for a mile or more. The event was organized by the LA Sherriff's Department, which is considering using the devices for civil unrest and disaster communications. A donated device will be shipped to authorities in Mississippi for those purposes this week.

This is a photograph from the Leinster Cross Country Championships which was held at Moyvalley Hotel and Golf Estate at Balyna Estate, Moyvalley, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 25th October 2015 begining at 11:00 until the final race at 14:20. The programme for today included Boys and Girls even ages, Junior male and female, Novice male and female and Masters male and female. The races were run on a superb course beside the Moyvalley hotel where the vast acres of prime farmland provided a large space to have a fair but challenging course on good firm ground.
The Leinster event was hosted by local club Na Fianna from Co. Meath. However the venue was actually just inside Co. Kildare in a part of the county where Meath and Kildare borders intersect several times along the route of the old N4/N6 road. The luxury Moyvalley Hotel & Golf resort is set amidst 550 acres of historic Kildare countryside and is easily accessed from the M6/M4 at Enfield or Kinnegad.

Balyna Estate where the races were held can trace its history back to the 1500s. More recently the estate was owned by the Bewley Family of the Bewley Cafe fame. The hotel and resort were taken over by new management in 2014 who are implementing big plans to expand Moyvalley further.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. A bit of a misleading title i'm afraid. This wonderful bit of vintage engineering is actual a part of the mechanism for spit-roasting meat! Other models of the “Food Simulator” feature a built-in dispenser and atomizer that also simulate the particular foodstuff’s taste and aroma. The sound made by biting into the real foodstuff is recorded in advance with a bone vibration microphone and played back synchronized to the user’s chewing movements to simulate the sound of eating the real thing.
