Magnificent Frigatebird ~ (Fregata magnificens)

"In the unlikely event of a water landing, your throat pouch can be used as a flotation device".

I always wondered how much the inflated throat pouch got in the way when these birds come down for a drink.

Thanks for visiting!

Device. I wonder who might know what is this and where could it be used.

Week 25 : Vintage Vibe

Shot on iPhone 11 Pro.

Normally on a Monday morning I do swim squad. But with the pools closed, I went for an early morning with my wife - who was happy to be my model at the end of the run when I noticed a puddle. Even with the world gone mad, it’s important to find the positives.

To my flickr mates, I’m doing my best to keep up - but spending all day on a variety of devices in my home office makes getting on to devices in the evening that little bit harder. I’ll get there.

Are digital devices taking over our lives? :/

This photo shows a cozy café named "Bijou Bijou," located on a charming street in Grenoble. The café has a welcoming entrance with wooden doors and large glass windows, allowing a glimpse of the warm interior lighting. Above the entrance, there is a red awning with the café's name written in elegant letters.

Outside, there are several small tables set up with red chairs featuring white polka dots. The tables have a simple design with white marble tops, creating a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere. The arrangement suggests it's a great spot for enjoying coffee or a light meal outdoors.

The building's facade adds character to the scene, with light-colored stone walls and vibrant orange paint on the upper levels. Small balconies with black railings line the windows above, giving a touch of European charm to the setting. On one side, there is a wooden door that adds to the rustic appeal.

In the foreground, a single customer is sitting at one of the tables, engrossed in what appears to be reading or browsing on a device. The street itself is paved with stones, enhancing the quaint and peaceful vibe of this café corner.

Photographed from the Spia d'Italia hill near Solferino to the "Torre monumentale di San Martino della Battaglia" about 10 km away and 70 m high. Behind it Lake Garda and the snow-covered 2,218 m high Monte Baldo. Because of its shape, Monte Baldo always reminds me of Mount Fuji, the sacred mountain of the Japanese.

The historic Battle of Solferino in June 1859 is considered one of the bloodiest of the 19th century. Around 220,000 soldiers from the Austrian Empire faced around 150,000 from the Kingdom of Sardinia and its allies France. The young Austrian Emperor Franz Josef lost the battle. This paved the way for the unification of Italy.

Up to 30,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in the course of the battle. At least 10,000 went missing or were captured. 40,000 other soldiers became ill after the battle due to lack of food, overexertion and inadequate sanitary conditions. Most did not die in the fight but later as a result of their wounds. Wounded were left on the battlefield or left to their own devices after salvage.

Henri Dunant, a Swiss humanist, during a business trip to Solferino, witnessed the terrible conditions without any help for the thousands of wounded and dying soldiers on the battlefield. Henri Dunant organized first aid with volunteers from the population and is subsequently considered the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

A mashup of a guilty pleasure from the cupboard and an electric gadget. The grainy-looking orange gummi bear is what's left of a container of sour gummi bears from the bulk section of a local market. The orange ones are my favorite, so in an OCD-driven way, I work on other colors and save the orange ones for last. The granular coating contains malic acid, the substance that naturally give sour fruits their tang and is used as an additive to impart sourness, usually in candy.

The orange illuminated pushbutton switch was purchased along with the red and green ones I've posted before. I originally planned to feature the sweet by itself until inspiration struck. I hope you all like this!

The Zollern colliery in Dortmund is one of the most beautiful testimonies to Germany's industrial past. An icon of industrial culture made of steel and glass is the machine hall with the stained-glass Art Nouveau portal. Discover the "Palace of Labor", look behind the magnificent brick facades, climb the headframe, follow the coal path and immerse yourself in a world of hard work underground.

This version can carry the Plants (PLANTS) and Tactical Carrying Devices (TCD's) when operating in enemy territory.

I built a bunch of medieval execution and torture devices back in November for a school project and am showcasing a few of them here. I guess you could say this build is a part one of two, with part two coming in two years or so. Yup, this is my last build for the next two years. I'll say more in my 2021 recap that I'll post soon.

This build was quite fun and the execution methods especially were exciting to design. I'm particularly proud of my stock design and the chopping block.

This is also my entry to the Rogues & Outlaws category of Brickscalibur.

Let me know what you think and have a nice day!

I was tired of seeing squirrels climb into my Magnolia tree and stretch to get to this feeder. Now, it is hung from it's own pole, and with a $3 Slinky and a hose clamp, the entertainment will begin.

Selfie.

This is left hand, palm side between 2nd and 3rd digit (you can see a ring), backlit with an LED torch. You can also see some veins in the top finger which I'd not noticed when doing this previously.

Sometimes I think that it would be worth exploring taking macro abstracts of different parts of the body. But there are two obvious problems though.

First, the only person in the house that would put up with such a project also needs to be clicking the shutter.

Second, how on earth do you get rid of all those Wrinkles of Wisdom? (By the way, I'm still waiting in the hope that the Wisdom will turn up real soon - the wrinkles have been here for quite a while now.) And in any case, why do you think I chose the palm-side?

This was another idea that turned out to be more of a challenge than I had anticipated. It was a task and a half to take, trying to compose and focus in the dark, trip the shutter and keep in the same position without moving (Ed: that's what same position means, surely?)... This is the best of about 20 - it took that long to get a half-workable technique.

Thank you for taking time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy smiles for Saturday!!

[Tripod mount. LED torch back-lighting. Manual focus. Delayed shutter. High auto ISO, as small an aperture as I could bear.

Cropped in Affinity Photo to get the main diagonal bright line going through one of the corners but still have the two other diagonals showing lightly.

Sharpened using Unsharp Mask and High Pass/Linear blend. Reduced clarity to soften the textures and noise.

I've discovered that because Flickr uses 8 bit jpegs rather than 16-bit pngs and there is a very limited colour range in the picture, the red gradients don't work as well as they might, particularly on some of my devices :(]

A suspicious device was across the street from Toys R Us. They blocked off one of the entrances to the Lakeland Square Mall. Lakeland Police was first on scene. LPD doesn't have a bomb squad, so they had to wait on TPD's bomb squad to arrive. After close investigation, it was determined to be a low jack device beeping because the vehicle it was taken off of, was stolen.

Music & the devices we have invented to listen to it are amazing discoveries/inventions that humankind has created. I know music makes me smile. :)

In 1877 the first phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison. The phonograph was the first method of recording and playing back sound. This was Edison's first great invention. Thanks Thomas Edison you helped millions of people smile and not just on Saturdays.
