A field trial was established in southern Oregon, near Brookings, in March 2019 to examine genetic variation in resistance to Phytophthora ramorum (pathogen causing Sudden Oak Death) in tanoak, as well as susceptibility of conifers Douglas-fir, coast redwood, and Port-Orford-cedar. The trial was a joint effort between USFS (Dorena Genetic Resource Center, FHP), OSU, and ODF.
900 tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) seedling ‘families’ from 55 Oregon parent trees (and bulked lots) were planted in a field trial to assess genetic resistance to Phytophthora ramorum (pathogen causing sudden oak death, SOD), and to correlate with results of seedling inoculation testing done at Oregon State University. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), and Port-Orford-cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) seedlings were also planted to test conifer susceptibility. This is a photograph from the first round of the Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 7th May 2014 at 20:00. The race follows the roads and trails around Belvedere and is a very testing 5KM route. The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Over 350 people took part in tonight's event. The weather was positively wintry with a very cold wind in the face of runners for the 1KM and the final KM of the race.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

The things you find when cleaning out the crawlspace...
When I lived in Minnesota, my neighborhood included a very odd little museum, the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices, dedicated to the odd devices associated with medical quackery over the years, including bloodletting devices, placebo pills, radium drops, etc.
One of the main exhibits of the small museum was a Psycograph, a machine that automatically characterized your head and used the principles of phrenology to characterize your personality. It did this using a contraption that was a gigantic metal helmet hooked to a little box of gears, rollers, and stamps, that would look at the height of different regions on your head, and turn that into a little paper tape listing your personality characteristics.
The results of my "head examination" are shown here. I seem to score well in "Individuality", "Wit", "Dignity", and "Exactness", while scoring poorly in "Secretiveness" and "Sexamity" (whatever that is... the hallmark of a good pseudoscience is unique terminology).
Using their provided interpretation chart, you could use these results to determine what your ideal profession is. Going through the results, I'm not a terribly great match for anything in particular, but I do score quite highly for "Zeppelin Attendant." Apparently I was born half a century too late (although I do score well with "Consulting Engineer", which is my actual profession).

For my sister-in-law who is sick today and told me she is browsing my flickr stream for entertainment.
Caleidoscope comes from Greek and can be roughly translated to "to see something beautiful".
It is true for this large caleidoscope because it is pretty from outside as well.
You turn a crank and the big drum at the front revolves. Inside is a viscous fluid in which some very pretty blue-white marbles, some small beads and a few other things slowly trundle and dive. The fluid in which they are suspended makes this so fascinating for me and also the very lovingly made mechanism and look - I badly want to include it in a set of stories taking place in a Steampunk setting ...

I found it in Ria's house (see previous photo). It belonged to a collection of her late husband.
I used the texture Feathered Gold from Pareeerica for the photo.

Finally figured out how to combine a nook case and stand with minimal ugliness. and what's more, this one is washable since the cardboards can be removed easily.

The image on the right is a close-up of the inside of an IRF230 MOSFET (a kind of power transistor), taken whilst the device was operating and running quite warm.
The thermal image was made using a Therm-App thermal imager with its 13mm f/1 lens at closest possible focus. To give an idea of scale, the diameter of the circle encompassing the 'works' is 20mm and the device measures 39mm in its longest dimension (not quite visible in the photo). The rectangular semicnductor device in the centre of the thermal image is about 2.75 x 4.5mm.
I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of field in the thermal image.
Normally, the 20mm circular area is covered by a metal cap but this was cut away to gain access to the device's internals. Thanks to G4JNT for this.
When the thermal image was made the device was passing about 2A with about 10V across it, dissipating about 20 watts. This is well within its specifications - provided it's bolted to a heatsink. It wasn't, so it got warm.
The diagonal lines visible on the thermal image are fine wires chemically deposited on the silicon so that current can be drawn through it. The small blue rectangle is the bond pad, where the connecting wire is bonded to the silicon die. You can see how that hair-fine wire cools the silicon, though that's only a side effect.
On the visible image the two round spots in the green dots are the lead-out wires, which protrude through the back of the device and provide connections to the outside world. A third connection is made through the metal of the case. In the thermal image the lead-out insulators appear hot but they're not: they are made of some kind of epoxy or glass that has massively higher emissivity than the metal that the rest of the device is made from.
This case style is known as TO-3 and a web search will turn up its precise dimensions. From tip to tip it's about 39mm. Likewise, a search on IRF230 will turn up a datasheet on the device.
The visible image was made with a Nikon D700 with a 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G lens mounted on a 48mm macro extension tube.

This is a photograph from the Presentation Senior School 5k 2014 which was held in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland at 20:00 on Wednesday 18th June 2014. This race started outside the Loreto College and ran down the harbour road it then turned onto the Castlepollard Road before it joined the N52 Delvin road and a turn to finish the last km along the banks of the Canal. About 150 runners took part. There was also a kids 2k race before the start of the 5k and there was a huge number involved. Congratulations to everyone in Presentation Senior School for staging this racing. The beautiful summer's evening made the event one which was raced in the most perfect of settings.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Meet is hosted by Markham Aquatic Club at the Markham Pan Am Pool.
Aleksei had the worst meet ever. He did not come to Markham to swim but to watch some kid play video games on his hand-held device.
He was glued to the screen for more then an hour and missed his 100 m Back. I was very upset. I think he has a video game addiction.
After the meet all his video games were collected and retired not to be played ever again.... Vey disappointing.....

Going to prototype with it on a chronic disease project.

24/7 live-in maid sissy barbie locked into a pale lilac satin uniform, also locked into a slave collar and CB.
Close up of the brass padlock through the zip's pull tab and through the two metal rings of the collar. This prevents sissy barbie removing her uniform without permission of Mistress Lady Penelope. Mistress has found this form of discipline highly effective. Only when a long hard day's work has been completed to Mistress' satisfaction might the padlock key and the key to the servant's quarters be given to the maid. Naturally the key to the maid's chastity device is retained by her Mistress. Once sissy barbie has returned to the servant's quarters she can take off her black satin and lace apron and matching pale lilac maid's cap trimmed with black lace, unlock the padlock and remove her uniform. As her petticoat has an attached bodice and shoulder straps, she cannot remove that until the uniform has been removed. After that she removes her pale lilac shoes, stockings, and underwear. Then she can don her nightie and begin her night's sleep, though being a 24/7 live in maid, she is always on call and she may well have to serve her Mistress wearing her nightie.
Sometimes when it is likely she will be called, she is not given the key to the padlock and has to sleep in uniform ready to 'scramble' within seconds of being called to serve. This does tend to flatten her petticoat unfortunately and that has to rectified the following day.
If the maid has been negligent in her duties in any way or does not pass Mistress Lady Penelope's inspection of her work and attire, she will not be given any keys but instead be locked in the sturdy steel cage in Mistress' dungeon as punishment. The cage has a hard floor and is too small for any more than a cat nap. All night the errant maid will be shifting from one uncomfortable position to another in the cold dark dungeon, not knowing the time. She will remain silent to avoid further punishment for waking her Mistress in her nice soft warm bed.
The maid will worry all night that she has angered her Mistress so much that Mistress Lady Penelope might decide to leave her locked up for two nights and the intervening day too. Sissy barbie knows that would be very severe punishment and will do everything humanly possible during her working day to avoid making her Mistress decide to do that. She also worries that perhaps Mistress Lady Penelope might be so busy that Mistress simply forgets to release her. The maid knows she is an insignificant convenience in Mistress Lady Penelope's life, Mistress might very well notice when she does not get her breakfast in bed but then forget that her maid is not cleaning the house, doing the laundry and all the other things she does unseen, Mistress Lady Penelope might get so excited by her social life that she forgets that her maid is locked in a little cage in the dungeon, dutifully remaining silent, not knowing whether it is day or night but acutely feeling the passage of every minute and regretting what she did to be receiving such severe punishment.
Sissy barbie will be waiting to hear her Mistress' footsteps and when she hears them, praying Mistress will come towards the dungeon door, unlock it and turn on the light. The maid will probably cower and quiver in case she is to be punished further, all the time hoping she is to be released, though she knows when that happens she will be required to begin a new days work, after a visit to the bathroom, fluffing out her petticoat and correcting whatever she did wrong the day before. The loss of one night's sleep is bad, but two nights in a row is torture, so the errant maid will be very careful not to risk another and will perform her duties to the letter despite being very weary. She will be extremely grateful to her Mistress for her release. The maid will have lost all track of time and if Mistress Lady Penelope is feeling magnanimous, might tell her maid how long she has been caged.
