Klaxon is a trademark for an electromechanical horn or alerting device. Mainly used on automobiles, trains and ships, they alert listeners of the vehicle's arrival and possible danger.

The Klaxon's characteristic "AH-OOOOH-GAH!" sound is produced by a spring-steel diaphragm with a rivet in the centre that is repeatedly struck by the teeth of a rotating cog-wheel. The diaphragm is attached to a horn which acts as an acoustic transformer as well as controlling the direction of the sound.

In the first klaxons, the wheel was driven either by hand or by an electric motor. (The electric version has been credited to inventor Miller Reese Hutchison, an associate of Thomas Edison.).

The Lovell-McConnell Manufacturing Co. of Newark, New Jersey bought the rights to the device in 1908. F. W. Lovell, the founder, coined the name klaxon from the Greek verb klazō, "to shriek".

Klaxons were first fitted to automobiles and bicycles in 1908. Electric klaxons were the first electrical devices to be fitted to private automobiles. They were originally powered by 6-volt dry cells, and from 1911 by rechargeable batteries. Later hand-powered versions were used as military evacuation alarms and factory sirens. The klaxon is also famous for its use as a submarine dive alarm. Oliver Lucas of Birmingham, England developed a standard electric car horn in 1910. The English company Klaxon Signals Ltd. has been based in Oldham, England for the last 80 years, with premises also in Birmingham. The French Klaxon company was acquired by the Italian Fiamm Group in the 1990s.

On Saturday February 4, Your LAFD Urban Search & Rescue trained firefighters from Fire Stations 3 (Civic Center/Bunker Hill), 85 (Harbor City), and 88 (Sherman Oaks) successfully completed a technical lift rescue operation in the Dragados Outfall Tunnel in Wilmington. These types of multi-company training drills ensure operational readiness for a low frequency, high risk incident which involves specialized equipment. The underground project, which involves building a new 7‐mile long, 18‐foot diameter tunnel to move treated water, is just one of multiple tunneling projects in the City of Los Angeles. Your LAFD is ready to respond to all emergencies in order to preserve life and property as an all risk life safety response provider.

Device: Plastic humane live-capture mouse trap (catch-and-release style).

These traps are designed to capture the mouse without injury, allowing it to be released outdoors. Humane traps work by letting the mouse enter a small tunnel where a door closes behind it when the animal touches a trigger plate or bait area.

How this type works

Mouse enters the plastic tunnel attracted by bait.

It steps on or pushes the trigger plate.

A swing door or sliding door closes behind it.

The mouse remains alive inside until released.

Humane traps avoid the snap bar used in traditional lethal traps.

Animal

Deer mouse — Peromyscus maniculatus (most likely)

Visible traits:

large dark eyes

large rounded ears

brown upper fur

pale/white underside

pointed nose and long whiskers

Deer mice typically have brown backs with white bellies and feet and large eyes and ears, distinguishing them from house mice.

Confidence: High, though a white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) can look almost identical in photos.

What is Visible in the Photo

1. Mouse

crouched posture inside the trap tunnel

forepaws extended on the floor plate

whiskers projecting forward

eye reflecting the flash

fur appears slightly damp or flattened

2. The Mouse’s Condition

Indicators:

Fur appears wet or matted, possibly from stress, condensation, or contact with bait/oil.

The mouse is crouched with forepaws extended, typical exploratory posture.

Head angled downward toward bait.

The animal is alive and investigating the bait at the moment of the photo.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sprengboje D is an anti-minesweep device, filled with explosives.

When a sweep hits the anchor line of the bouy it pulls the bouy onto the sweep and activates an igniter.

The explosion destroys the minesweep gear.

These bouys also washed ashore and made several casualties.

They were not recognized as a mine, and thus as a danger.

A Vlielander got killed probably by a Sprenboje; he found 'something' on the beach, took it home, and tried to dismantel it in his shed, an explosion followed which killed the man.

A very nice telescope that Jules Verne would have liked probably on the viewing level of the Eiffel Tower, played around with in photoshop which Monsieur Verne probably wouldn't have recognised.

What is it?

I'm not sure what this old piece of equipment is, couldn't get close enough for a good look because it's behind a fenced portion of the Ormond Beach Wetlands that's owned by the Nature Conservancy. It's near the end of a line of bare of utility poles leading to the east from the old Reliant Energy plant, and it obviously hasn't been in use for a long time. For reference, the post is about the diameter of a normal utility pole. There are two warning tags visible on the box -- the black one says "CAUTION: HOT TEMPERATURE IS NORMAL" and the red one reads "CAUTION TO AVOID POSSIBLE INJURY USE HANDLE, NOT PANEL EDGES WHEN OPENING AND CLOSING TILT OUT PANEL." Obviously can't see what units are measured or indicated by the detached and dangling dial.

Anyone out there have an idea what it is (or might have been)?

I'm pretty happy with the composition of this one.

I saw an interesting piece about anti-homeless benches at Public Benches Turn 'Anti-Homeless' and so when I saw these bus stop benches in Shanghai I had to snap a picture. They are clearly designed to stop anyone from sleeping on them, but are also very uncomfortable to sit on at all. Another example of 'Architecture of Control'
