My entry for the current Lego Steampunk contest. Category: Enlightment.
As the 19th century began, the interest in machines who would allow humans to fly grew. Many inventors tried their hands and many kinds of devices were developed. But no seemed perfect, every machine had its weakness.
In 1857 the British Queen commissioned the famous inventor Dr. Cassius to build a flight device, that would be the best in all sectors, as the war was iminent.
This is a lightly armed prototype of Dr. Cassius flying war machine, the MT-09 Iron Bird.

While walking in Olaiyah Street, I was surprised that the Environmental Architecture (Sustainable Architecture) takes place in Riyadh! So, I couldn't stand watching without taking shots :D
Location: Olaiyah Street, Olaiya Town, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Function: It's used as a low energy architecture to decrease the solar radiation in hot cities like Riyadh in which the average temperature at day is 43°C - 45°C. so the shades and shadows are valuable there. I just wanted to know if the curtain wall and shading device could be cheaper than the other heat insulation materials?? I wish but I don't think so!
Just it's disadvantages that at winter solar radiation is needed since the winter there is very cold and very short, so it needs some balance.

The things you find when cleaning out the crawlspace...
When I lived in Minnesota, my neighborhood included a very odd little museum, the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices, dedicated to the odd devices associated with medical quackery over the years, including bloodletting devices, placebo pills, radium drops, etc.
One of the main exhibits of the small museum was a Psycograph, a machine that automatically characterized your head and used the principles of phrenology to characterize your personality. It did this using a contraption that was a gigantic metal helmet hooked to a little box of gears, rollers, and stamps, that would look at the height of different regions on your head, and turn that into a little paper tape listing your personality characteristics.
The results of my "head examination" are shown here. I seem to score well in "Individuality", "Wit", "Dignity", and "Exactness", while scoring poorly in "Secretiveness" and "Sexamity" (whatever that is... the hallmark of a good pseudoscience is unique terminology).
Using their provided interpretation chart, you could use these results to determine what your ideal profession is. Going through the results, I'm not a terribly great match for anything in particular, but I do score quite highly for "Zeppelin Attendant." Apparently I was born half a century too late (although I do score well with "Consulting Engineer", which is my actual profession).

This is a photograph from the Rathfarnham 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 29th September 2013 at 10:00.
This is one of the most popular runs in South County Dublin and is held in support of St. Luke's Cancer Hospital, Rathgar. This year's race attracted over 1,300 participants and the run is open to runners, joggers and walkers. The course is one of the fastest 5ks in the country with a downhill start and finish. This is an excellently organised race with marhsalling at every junction and Garda enforced road closures for the duration of the race.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was a record number of participants with over 1,300 people taking to the start line.
Weather: This race was held on a beautiful autumn morning. There was little or no breeze and there was mild temperatures of around 15C for the race.
Course: Overall this course is a flat and fast course. There is a net gain of 15M over the whole course with slightly downhill gradients at the start and towards the finish. The course is completely left-handed which makes for favourable conditions. All being equal the course provides an excellent opportunity for every from elite competitors to joggers to set a fast time for themselves.
The race starts at the easterly side of the N81 Tempelogue Road and Springfield Avenue. The start area is shown here on Google StreetView (goo.gl/maps/kg7FY). The race follows Springfield Avenue along the side of Bushy Park. The race overlaps the final kilometer and the finish as it proceeds to the Rathfarnham Road (Shown here Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/gRrI6). The route heads north on Rathfarnham road as there is a very gentle incline until the junction with the Temleogue Road is reached and runners make a sharp left turn onto the N81 (shown here Google StreetView goo.gl/maps/51S2t). The race then heads south along Templeogue Road where the runners can see the course unfold straight infront of them. The race turns left at Springfield Avenue again (start area) and the final Kilometer is as the first to the finish area (Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/1R08S) just before the Rathfarnham Road Junction.

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

The image on the right is a close-up of the inside of an IRF230 MOSFET (a kind of power transistor), taken whilst the device was operating and running quite warm.
The thermal image was made using a Therm-App thermal imager with its 13mm f/1 lens at closest possible focus. To give an idea of scale, the diameter of the circle encompassing the 'works' is 20mm and the device measures 39mm in its longest dimension (not quite visible in the photo). The rectangular semicnductor device in the centre of the thermal image is about 2.75 x 4.5mm.
I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of field in the thermal image.
Normally, the 20mm circular area is covered by a metal cap but this was cut away to gain access to the device's internals. Thanks to G4JNT for this.
When the thermal image was made the device was passing about 2A with about 10V across it, dissipating about 20 watts. This is well within its specifications - provided it's bolted to a heatsink. It wasn't, so it got warm.
The diagonal lines visible on the thermal image are fine wires chemically deposited on the silicon so that current can be drawn through it. The small blue rectangle is the bond pad, where the connecting wire is bonded to the silicon die. You can see how that hair-fine wire cools the silicon, though that's only a side effect.
On the visible image the two round spots in the green dots are the lead-out wires, which protrude through the back of the device and provide connections to the outside world. A third connection is made through the metal of the case. In the thermal image the lead-out insulators appear hot but they're not: they are made of some kind of epoxy or glass that has massively higher emissivity than the metal that the rest of the device is made from.
This case style is known as TO-3 and a web search will turn up its precise dimensions. From tip to tip it's about 39mm. Likewise, a search on IRF230 will turn up a datasheet on the device.
The visible image was made with a Nikon D700 with a 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G lens mounted on a 48mm macro extension tube.

This is a photograph from the 3rd annual running of the Trim AC 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 5th February 2017 at 12:00. The race attracted over 1,200 participants which shows a 100% increase on last year's participation. The event shows growth year on year mirroring the growing popularity of the race. The race started on the Trim/Athboy road on the town's ring road and proceded to take an anti-clockwise loop out towards the village of Dunderry and townland of Kilbride before returning back to the Trim Industrial Estate for the finish. The route is held on quiet country roads with some hills at 3, 6, 8 mile segments.

The weather for this year's race was perfect for racing. There was a hard frost overnight but this brought clear bright skies and crisp air. There was no real wind to speak of.
Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. If the first three years of this year are anything to go on then this race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim.

Back side of ATC's MRAD (Medium Range Acoustic Device), during a demo for military, law enforcement, and government tech experts from the US and abroad, at Edwards Air Force Base in Palmdale (Sep 1, 2005). The devices are capable of broadcasting sound at high volumes for 100-600 meters. The event was organized by the LA Sherriff's Department, which is considering using similar devices for civil unrest and disaster communications. LRADS will be used by the NYPD and Boston PD, as well as other law enforcement agencies; 60 are in use currently by the US Navy. A quantity of free devices are being shipped to Marine police detachments for use in gulf coast Katrina crisis zones.
ISAF and Afghan Forces determination to see security and stabilisation in Sangin begins to pay off.
“The British soldiers who were here in 2006 wouldn’t recognise this place,” said Phil Weatherill, Sangin’s civilian stabilisation advisor.
“The fact I am able to stand here bare headed would surprise them,” he added.
Stood on the junction of the town’s main bazaar road and the so called Avenue of Hope at the edge of the newly developed governance zone, back in 2006 he would have literally been dicing with death.
“If you travel through Sangin now you’re going to see the beginnings of real progress. You’ll see the improved roads, including the main 611 which has just been tarmac.
The next phase is to tarmac the main road through the bazaar, thus linking it directly with the governance zone.
We’ve also got solar street lighting going up which is incredible for security and provides a real perception of improvement for the local population,” he added.
Like elsewhere in Afghanistan security is of paramount importance if development and reconstruction is to take place at a pace acceptable to the local community here.
Ensuring that happens is the job of Battle Group (North) which is headed up by an assortment of UK units but predominantly 2 Rifles.
“This tour has been hard pounding, the boys here have done superbly well,” said Colonel Rob Thompson, commanding officer of the 2 Rifles Battle Group (North).
“We’ve made progress here in Sangin.
I characterise that by describing most of the progress as small, essential and rather unglamorous steps brining a little more security, stabilisation and some reconstruction to this part of Afghanistan.
For example the opening of around a 100 shops in the bazaar is a completely new sector. It’s not quite what one would expect on the edge of the M25 but it’s certainly got enough to keep her indoors in Sangin happy - and is an example of where we have seen improvement to the lives of normal Afghans, he added.
But it’s not been without cost. 2 Rifles have suffered more deaths than any other unit so far this tour.
Every patrol that ventures out into the Sangin area runs a gauntlet of dangers ranging from ambushes through to the insurgents now preferred method of attack, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Whilst a small number of IED’s have caused substantial pain and grief many hundreds more have been found and destroyed by 2 Rifles in the last few months - frustrating insurgent attempts to kill and maim both civilians and ISAF forces.
Despite this and despite the progress of the town’s development, for some locals the jury is still out.
It’s hardly surprising given the last 30 years of invasion, civil war and lawlessness.
People here know only to well the danger of backing the wrong horse.
“We have many problems one of which is a lack of electricity, especially here in the grain bazaar and in our houses, said 30 year Sangin shopkeeper, Sayed Fullah.
He is surrounded by friends and family in his brand new shop, part of the newly built grain bazaar, a project funded by the UK’s stabilisation fund.
He added: “If you look at our country, especially here in Sangin, there is not enough security.”
It’s a perception ISAF and the Afghan army and police forces here hope will soon change.
All around Sangin the Afghan National Army, under the guidance of UK forces, have been taking over and running patrol bases across the town, formerly occupied by British troops.
This is a key element of the area’s stabilisation and development plan - allowing the Afghans to begin taking control of their own security hand in hand with developing governance.
In addition the Afghan National Police (ANP) now has a highly visible presence in the town and one that is expanding.
“Since we’ve begun developing the ANP checkpoints in and around the bazaar, security is a little better especially in the centre of town, where before there was none. Now it is peaceful,” said Lt Muhammed Jamah, the town’s acting Chief of Police.
Stood in front of one of a number of new ANP check points and police stations being built throughout the town, he added:
“ISAF and Afghan coalition forces should continue to work together, conducting joint patrols and joint operations in the area. However, in the surrounding villages security is a problem.”
At a recent shurah (consultation) held at the ANA run Tangiers patrol base in Sangin local Afghans, many from nearby villages, said they were too scared of Taliban reprisals to accept ISAF help to build new wells and repair their mosques.
“There are huge problems of intimidation something that is inevitable in the kind of war that’s being fought here, said Sangin stabilisation advisor, Phil Weatherill.
“This is a counter-insurgency war and unfortunately there is going to be intimidation.
When someone turns up from the Taliban, they don’t even have to be armed. They simply go to a person’s home, sit down with them and have a cup of chai and give them a simple warning that perhaps it’s not a good idea for them to use the new community health centre or use the new ISAF funded school.
This is a kind of security militarily that is very difficult to fight against. Combating it has got to come from building the trust of the community and getting the community to start fighting back with us,” he added.
This is the long, hard task the UK and ISAF is now focussing on.
As one observer here noted ISAF is making ‘small baby steps’ that if continued will soon pick up greater pace and confidence.
It’s a sentiment shared by the commanding officer of 2 Rifles, Colonel Rob Thompson:
“I am struck on a daily basis by the grit, determination and indomitability of my men.
We see each of those who have been tragically killed in action here standing behind us and telling us to keep going, to keep fighting and to stay on the front foot and improve the lives of ordinary Afghans.”

You turn a crank and the big drum at the front revolves. Inside is a viscous fluid in which some very pretty blue-white marbles, some small beads and a few other things slowly trundle and dive. The fluid in which they are suspended makes this so fascinating for me and also the very lovingly made mechanism and look - I badly want to include it in a set of stories taking place in a Steampunk setting ...

"NON HUMAN DEVICE #01" is an audiovisual installation based on Boris Chimp 504's audiovisual live performances.
It was exhibited at AXA building, NOS D'bandada 2014 / Porto.
During a recent exploration to Kepler22b, an exoplanet from the Kepler-16 binary star system, Boris Chimp 504 found some metallic objects on its surface. Though the origin of this object is totally unknown, it's probably a piece of technology from an extraterrestrial civilization. Boris has sent this object in an hyperspace capsule to the Vladivostok Space Center, on Earth.
It is believed that it's a part of a machine, a mechanism or a device of some kind. Recent investigations on the object lead to believe that it is an interface to control the position and orientation in space and time of something bigger, a spaceship maybe.
The device responds to touch, and generates an electric magnetic field that interferes with audiovisual signals and causes space-time distortions.
In this public installation, the audience had the opportunity to interact with this “Non Human-Machine Device”, and experience the effects that it causes to audiovisual signals and space-time orientation.
