Recordemos ahora y siempre

Boots Cash Chemists, Ltd.
John Boot of Nottingham, England opened his first store in 1849 and began a tradition of serving the health needs of ordinary people as cheaply as he could.
After his son Jessie married Florence Rowe in 1886 the business began to greatly expand as she took interest in it. When the name was changed in 1888 to Boots Pure Drugs they began to sell all sorts of items, including postcards by the 1890’s.
These lithographic cards issued under the Pelham Series name included animals, art reproductions, patriotic themes, and view-cards. Many real photo cards were manufactured for them by Valentine’s.
As time went on the colors in their cards grew more intense until they gave them an easily recognizable look. Boots grew into a chain of more than 800 stores.
Volendam
Volendam is a small town in North Holland in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Edam-Volendam. The town has about 22,000 inhabitants (November 2007), and is twinned with Coventry in the UK.
Originally, Volendam was the location of the harbour of the nearby Edam. However in 1357, the inhabitants of Edam dug a shorter canal to the Zuiderzee with its own separate harbour.
This removed the need for Volendam's original harbour, which was then dammed and used for land reclamation. Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Volendam, which literally meant 'Filled dam'.
In the early part of the 20th. century Volendam became an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time there.
The majority of the population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church, which is deeply connected to the village culture. Historically, many missionaries and bishops grew up in Volendam. Today there is the chapel of Our Lady of the Water, which is located in a village park.
The Volendam Café Fire
The Volendam New Year's café fire occurred during the 2000–2001 New Year's night. The fire began early on New Year's Day 2001 and caused the death of 14 young people. 241 people were admitted to hospital, 200 of whom suffered serious burns.
The fire took place in a building that housed three bars. On New Year's Eve it was packed with more than 350 young people between 13 and 22 years of age when a short blaze happened in the café De Hemel ("Heaven") which was located on the top floor after a sparkler hit Christmas decorations that hung from the ceiling. The temperature in the room reached 400 °C (752 °F). Many of the partygoers were wearing highly flammable synthetic fabrics which clung to their flesh as they melted and burned.
There was great panic and the heat, lack of oxygen and people falling over each other made escaping extremely difficult. There also were bars in front of the windows and there were too few emergency exits, all of which contributed to the high number of injuries.
Survivors stated that shortly after the fire began, all the lights went out, contributing to the panic.
The first report reached the Amsterdam ambulance service at 00:38 local time on the 1st. January. The first fire engine arrived at 00:46.
Mayor Frank IJsselmuiden claimed that the crowd had panicked because all but one of the emergency exits were blocked.
Many of those injured were hurt when they smashed windows and leapt from third and second floor windows in an attempt to escape the fire. Others including 53 injured individuals were admitted due to burns, with some being flown to special burns units in Belgium and Germany.
Investigation Into the Fire
The fire was initially investigated intensively by media and politicians. New rules were introduced for decorations in cafés, nightclubs and other venues. The owner and managers of the building were indicted for culpability.
An inquiry showed that the owner Jan Veerman had been negligent in providing escape routes, as well as failing to soak the Christmas decorations with a fire-resistant substance. Also there were too many people in the building at the time of the incident.
The owner was given a conditional prison sentence and community service. As a result of the inquiry Mayor of Edam-Volendam Frank IJsselmuiden and alderman Wim Visscher resigned their positions.
Tourism in Volendam
Volendam is a popular tourist destination. It is well-known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents.
The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters (although there are believed to be fewer than 50 women now wearing the costume as part of their daily lives, most of them elderly).
There is a regular ferry connection to Marken, a peninsula close by.
Volendam also features a small museum about its history and clothing style, and visitors can have their pictures taken in traditional Dutch costumes.
Volendam on Film
Volendam was a shooting location in Vikas Bahl's 2014 Bollywood film, Queen. The actors established an Indian food shop called Rani's Gol Gappa.
The owner was an Italian, Marco Canadea, as Marcello. The role of Queen was played by Indian actress Kangana Ranaut.
The film follows the story of Rani Mehra, a diffident Punjabi girl from New Delhi who embarks on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam by herself after her fiancé calls off their wedding.
Queen is cited as a ground-breaking and an influential feminist film by many scholars. Over the years, the film has built a strong cult following. It was named as one of the best films of the decade (2010's) by multiple publications such as Paste and Film Companion.
Several publications such as O, The Oprah Magazine, and Cosmopolitan have named it as one of the best films of Indian Cinema. Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express named Queen as one of the 75 finest and most iconic films made in India in the last 70 years.
Music in Volendam
Volendam is well known for its distinctive music, which is called Palingsound (literally "Eel Sound") in reference to Volendam's status as fishing village.
During the 1960's, the local group The Cats was a very popular group in the Netherlands and abroad.
Another band from Volendam was BZN, which became popular in the late 1960's and early 1970's. In 1995 BZN performed a duet with the ten-year-old Jan Smit, who quickly became a celebrity in his own right.
The popular music groups 3JS and Nick & Simon are famously from Volendam; their members have all participated in local musical performances through the years.

Furthermore, a cat's feces will seem laborious and dry if she is able to obtain a bowel movement. On the other hand, the feces can be mistaken for diarrhea, which is a highly free bowel. As a final point, your cat could possibly lose her appetite, which can be a indication of one additional problem, but can come about because of to a feeling of fullness. When you are guaranteed the cat is constipated, you have a couple of choices to treatment the constipation.
Metamucil - a human dietary complement - works perfectly for cats. Because of to the psyllium husk in the merchandise, acquire treatment to thoroughly blend one/four to one teaspoon in canned foods at every feeding. Even though you may perhaps search for a wide variety of techniques to "eliminate" this difficulty in your unique everyday living, let us look into some residence remedies for canine constipation which can be utilized in the eventuality it happens in theirs.
As talked about earlier, a right diet program and training are key element elements in ensuring your puppy has the capability to move his bowels as often as needed. Household dogs frequently need to be walked 2 times a day although maintaining a correct diet. If your dog will become constipated, an individual approach to alleviate this dilemma is by adding 1 to two teaspoons of bran to his meal. This lets for excess moisture in the stool.
Another process to soften the stool would be to include psyllium (Metamucil in the adult globe) to his eating routine. 50 percent a teaspoon two times a day, in addition to drinking a lot of h2o, will suffice. Two teaspoons, 2 times a day should really be extra to his meal, but for only a week. There are a few other guidelines you can acquire to relieve your dog's constipation. Retain his foods moist by including a bit of h2o. If your dog is having on in years, add some raw meat and vegetables to his weight-reduction plan.
There are sure indicators which can inform you to likely issues, and for which you can acquire rapid tips. Prolonged hair on puppies can contribute to feces to turn out to be entangled consequently, continue to keep your canine accurately groomed. Dogs are inclined to eat all in sight, be sure no bones or other material has been ingested. Just as we practical experience constipation because of to specific drugs, canines are no exception. Psychological stress and anxiety is a second indicator relating to constipation.
Despite the fact that it has been recommended that all breeds and puppies of any age are prone to constipation, there are other elements which you could require to bear in mind, and for which a large number of dog proprietors are culpable. Practically never feed your puppy from the dinner table. Even when you may well indulge the canine with a couple of scraps right here and there, you are contributing to his constipation.
Meals that contain flour, sugar, rice, dairy and higher protein are the essential source of the challenge. Ice cream, cookies, bread, chocolate, or other unhealthy meals goods can induce your puppy unwanted discomfort. As outlined before, a lack of fiber and dehydration are prevalent brings about. An extra bring about for worry would be a affliction recognised as mega colon. This only would mean your dog has an inflamed colon which prevents the discharge of feces.
The time to go to the vet will developed into evident when your dog's inability to defecate is hampered by a diminished appetite, passing blood in minimal amounts, and over-all lethargy. Maintain in thoughts, contributing to the all round health and wellbeing of your canine will need to be of the utmost benefits. A dog's absolutely adore is unconditional, because of this, he or she is completely dependent upon you to preserve a healthier and harmonious existence. Be actually vigilant to any symptoms of tension and guarantee his weight loss program and physical exercise routine is acceptable and on-going.

The US trained Osama Bin Laden. Declaring victory because the US killed him neglects the other lives & freedom lost, and our culpability. A symbol of victory is not a victory. This is just bread & circuses. You're still going to get groped at the airport. My bag will still be rifled in the subway. I'm still going to wonder if the next time my best friends are in a plane headed somewhere far away, if it will double back and go through a skyscraper. None of this stops because of a symbolic vengeance killing.
Don't be distracted. We have not won.

About 270 soldiers in a Fort Lewis helicopter unit are scheduled to return home today [August 26, 2008] after a 15-month deployment in Iraq.
The Army says the 4th Squadron, 6th Air Cavalry killed 135 enemies and wounded 56 in combat.
The unit deployed with more than 600 soldiers in May 2007 and was stationed in northern Iraq. The remaining soldiers will return through September. The unit flew UH-58 Kiowa Warriors and UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters in air attack and support operations out of forward operating bases.
The welcome-home ceremony is scheduled in a hangar at Gray Army Airfield.

Why Iraq Was a Mistake
By Lieut. General Greg Newbold (Ret.)
Two senior military officers are known to have challenged Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the planning of the Iraq war. Army General Eric Shinseki publicly dissented and found himself marginalized. Marine Lieut. General Greg Newbold, the Pentagon's top operations officer, voiced his objections internally and then retired, in part out of opposition to the war. Here, for the first time, Newbold goes public with a full-throated critique:
In 1971, the rock group The Who released the antiwar anthem Won't Get Fooled Again. To most in my generation, the song conveyed a sense of betrayal by the nation's leaders, who had led our country into a costly and unnecessary war in Vietnam. To those of us who were truly counterculture--who became career members of the military during those rough times--the song conveyed a very different message. To us, its lyrics evoked a feeling that we must never again stand by quietly while those ignorant of and casual about war lead us into another one and then mismanage the conduct of it. Never again, we thought, would our military's senior leaders remain silent as American troops were marched off to an ill-considered engagement. It's 35 years later, and the judgment is in: the Who had it wrong. We have been fooled again.
From 2000 until October 2002, I was a Marine Corps lieutenant general and director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After 9/11, I was a witness and therefore a party to the actions that led us to the invasion of Iraq--an unnecessary war. Inside the military family, I made no secret of my view that the zealots' rationale for war made no sense. And I think I was outspoken enough to make those senior to me uncomfortable. But I now regret that I did not more openly challenge those who were determined to invade a country whose actions were peripheral to the real threat--al-Qaeda. I retired from the military four months before the invasion, in part because of my opposition to those who had used 9/11's tragedy to hijack our security policy. Until now, I have resisted speaking out in public. I've been silent long enough.
I am driven to action now by the missteps and misjudgments of the White House and the Pentagon, and by my many painful visits to our military hospitals. In those places, I have been both inspired and shaken by the broken bodies but unbroken spirits of soldiers, Marines and corpsmen returning from this war. The cost of flawed leadership continues to be paid in blood. The willingness of our forces to shoulder such a load should make it a sacred obligation for civilian and military leaders to get our defense policy right. They must be absolutely sure that the commitment is for a cause as honorable as the sacrifice.
With the encouragement of some still in positions of military leadership, I offer a challenge to those still in uniform: a leader's responsibility is to give voice to those who can't--or don't have the opportunity to--speak. Enlisted members of the armed forces swear their oath to those appointed over them; an officer swears an oath not to a person but to the Constitution. The distinction is important.
Before the antiwar banners start to unfurl, however, let me make clear--I am not opposed to war. I would gladly have traded my general's stars for a captain's bars to lead our troops into Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban and al-Qaeda. And while I don't accept the stated rationale for invading Iraq, my view--at the moment--is that a precipitous withdrawal would be a mistake. It would send a signal, heard around the world, that would reinforce the jihadists' message that America can be defeated, and thus increase the chances of future conflicts. If, however, the Iraqis prove unable to govern, and there is open civil war, then I am prepared to change my position.
I will admit my own prejudice: my deep affection and respect are for those who volunteer to serve our nation and therefore shoulder, in those thin ranks, the nation's most sacred obligation of citizenship. To those of you who don't know, our country has never been served by a more competent and professional military. For that reason, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's recent statement that "we" made the "right strategic decisions" but made thousands of "tactical errors" is an outrage. It reflects an effort to obscure gross errors in strategy by shifting the blame for failure to those who have been resolute in fighting. The truth is, our forces are successful in spite of the strategic guidance they receive, not because of it.
What we are living with now is the consequences of successive policy failures. Some of the missteps include: the distortion of intelligence in the buildup to the war, McNamara-like micromanagement that kept our forces from having enough resources to do the job, the failure to retain and reconstitute the Iraqi military in time to help quell civil disorder, the initial denial that an insurgency was the heart of the opposition to occupation, alienation of allies who could have helped in a more robust way to rebuild Iraq, and the continuing failure of the other agencies of our government to commit assets to the same degree as the Defense Department. My sincere view is that the commitment of our forces to this fight was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute these missions--or bury the results.
Flaws in our civilians are one thing; the failure of the Pentagon's military leaders is quite another. Those are men who know the hard consequences of war but, with few exceptions, acted timidly when their voices urgently needed to be heard. When they knew the plan was flawed, saw intelligence distorted to justify a rationale for war, or witnessed arrogant micromanagement that at times crippled the military's effectiveness, many leaders who wore the uniform chose inaction. A few of the most senior officers actually supported the logic for war. Others were simply intimidated, while still others must have believed that the principle of obedience does not allow for respectful dissent. The consequence of the military's quiescence was that a fundamentally flawed plan was executed for an invented war, while pursuing the real enemy, al-Qaeda, became a secondary effort.
There have been exceptions, albeit uncommon, to the rule of silence among military leaders. Former Army Chief of Staff General Shinseki, when challenged to offer his professional opinion during prewar congressional testimony, suggested that more troops might be needed for the invasion's aftermath. The Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense castigated him in public and marginalized him in his remaining months in his post. Army General John Abizaid, head of Central Command, has been forceful in his views with appointed officials on strategy and micromanagement of the fight in Iraq--often with success. Marine Commandant General Mike Hagee steadfastly challenged plans to underfund, understaff and underequip his service as the Corps has struggled to sustain its fighting capability.
To be sure, the Bush Administration and senior military officials are not alone in their culpability. Members of Congress--from both parties--defaulted in fulfilling their constitutional responsibility for oversight. Many in the media saw the warning signs and heard cautionary tales before the invasion from wise observers like former Central Command chiefs Joe Hoar and Tony Zinni but gave insufficient weight to their views. These are the same news organizations that now downplay both the heroic and the constructive in Iraq.
So what is to be done? We need fresh ideas and fresh faces. That means, as a first step, replacing Rumsfeld and many others unwilling to fundamentally change their approach. The troops in the Middle East have performed their duty. Now we need people in Washington who can construct a unified strategy worthy of them. It is time to send a signal to our nation, our forces and the world that we are uncompromising on our security but are prepared to rethink how we achieve it. It is time for senior military leaders to discard caution in expressing their views and ensure that the President hears them clearly. And that we won't be fooled again.

It's a great article by Newbold, and very courageous. I consider his resignation to be honorable as it was an act of political protest.
However, I think he's confused about taking the fight to al-qaeada. The real enemy is domestic. The real enemy is unethical business and governmental relationships and practices. The real enemy is the policy of global dominance as an end. The real enemy is the philosophy, and mentality, that the ends, somehow, justify the means.
THE BEAST FROM THE SEA - A NEW WORLD EMPIRE
Revelation 13:1-10, "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints."
It is a popular but erroneous notion to name the beast from the sea the Antichrist. John, who was the only one to use the term "antichrist" in scripture, did not himself use the term to describe the beast from the sea. Antichrist means against Christ. Referring to false teachers, John states, "Even now are there many antichrists." (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 1:7) Indeed the beast from the sea is "against Christ", but lets look at the bigger picture.
An antichrist can be anyone. If you walk out onto a busy city street you are probably surrounded by antichrists. A person in your class or even a loved one or family member can be an antichrist.
Let's take a look at the characteristics of an antichrist.
In 1 John 2:18 John states that there are many. John goes on to say in verse 22 that he who denies that Jesus is Messiah (Christ) is the antichrist and that anyone who denies that there are a Father and a Son is the antichrist.
1 John 4:3 states that if you do not believe that Jesus was an actual flesh and blood person you are an antichrist. John goes on to reinforce this in 2 John 1:7 by stating that people who do not confess that Jesus came in the flesh are deceivers as well.
If we consider our own friends and acquaintances we should all know at least one antichrist. Society and the church have distanced themselves from the concept that there are many antichrists by attributing the term to only one person in the distant future. This is much more palatable than believing that perhaps your best friend, sister, brother, mother or father could be an antichrist.
Society at large always tends to "lay blame" as opposed to "taking responsibility" for what they have allowed. Some examples of this are as follows. Jesus was killed and society blamed Judas Iscariot. World War Two sweeps over the world and society blames Hitler. The Vietnam War is blamed on politicians. The amount of sex and violence in our society today is blamed on actors and directors in Hollywood. Our illegal drug problem is blamed on drug dealers.
Even though the persons mentioned here, Judas Iscariot, Hitler, Politicians, actors, directors and drug dealers are culpable and liable for much evil: they are but scapegoats. The true blame for these atrocities lies squarely on the shoulders of the societies that stand by and allow the atrocities happen.
It was the people of Jesus' time who were yelling "Crucify Him!" It was the people of Germany who elected Hitler to power. The people of America elected the politicians who paved the way for the Vietnam War. It is the people of the world that pay for the movies and television shows that have eroded our moral balance. Finally, if there were no market for illegal drugs there would be no drug dealers.
This is what has happened with the teachings of the antichrist. Society has created a fictional villain to lay the blame on. They have forgotten that it is society who has laid the groundwork for such villains to come to the surface. It is the spirit of the antichrist resident within society today, which is the real villain.
Now before we go on let us take a few minutes to discuss prophetic symbolism. One of the keys to understanding prophecy is to understand the symbols used in prophetic utterances. For example, when a "beast" is mentioned in prophecy it is usually in reference to a kingdom, a nation or a New World Order. When a "head" is used in a prophetic vision it represents the headquarters of a government. When a "horn" is used in prophecy it represents a king or ruler. When "the sea" is used it is referring to humanity on a global basis. The following verse from Daniel illustrates this.
Daniel 7:23-24, "Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings."
The dragon gives the beast from the sea his power, seat and authority. Satan had once offered these same options to a weary Jesus who had just spent forty days in the wilderness fasting. Jesus in turn rejected all of Satan's offers. Sadly, the beast from the sea will gladly take all the power that Satan offers. The Greek word for "power" is dunamis {doo'-nam-is}. This does not merely mean political power but power that resides in having armies as well as the power to do miracles. It means to have the strength to back up what you say. The Greek word for "seat" is thronos {thron'-os}. This is the word that we get throne from and indicates a place of authority of rule. The word "authority" is translated exousia {ex-oo-see'-ah} and means, the power of rule or government (the power of him whose will and commands must be submitted to by others and obeyed)
The following passages from Daniel are important to keep in mind when reading about the beast from the sea in Revelation. This new world order will contain many of the same characteristics of the following four beasts of Daniel all rolled in one. It will indeed be an awe inspiring sight.
THE FIRST BEAST: The Babylonian Empire under Nebuchadnezzar. 605BC - 538BC
Daniel 7:3-4, "And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it."
Ancient Babylon was founded by Nimrod who ordered the construction of the Tower of Babel. As a result of this God confounded all of the languages of the world. From its inception Babylon always desired to unite mankind. With Nimrod they built the great city of Babylon which was a wonder in itself. When this was finished they began another even greater project. They began the tower of Babel, which was yet another attempt to bring mankind together under one ruling authority. Their idea was to bring mankind together by proposing a grand project that would unite mankind in a single purpose and a common goal. God then confounded the languages of the world so that no one could understand each other. Individual nations arose and mankind was separated through language barriers.
The Babylonian Empire under Nebuchadnezzar attempted to reunite the world by conquering all nations and making them part of the Babylonian Empire. They again were trying to bring the whole world under one leadership. The problem with this is that the leaders of the Babylonian Empire considered themselves gods and demanded worship from the peoples. God could not allow this idolatrous practice to continue.
In 538 BC after the Babylonian Emperor Belshazzar used the golden vessels from the Lord's temple in Jerusalem for a drunken debauch, he saw the writing on the wall. The words written on the wall were MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and UPHARSIN. Daniel records the meaning of the words in the following verses:
Daniel 5:26-28, "This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians."
That same night Belshazzar was murdered and Darius the Median took the kingdom. Babylon was finished. The Medo-Persian Empire took over.
THE SECOND BEAST: The Medo-Persian Empire. 538BC - 331BC
Daniel 7:5, "And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh." The Medo-Persian Empire considered its government infallible. Once a law was made it was never rescinded."
The Medo-Persian Empire reigned until 331BC when it met up with an unequaled military genius. This young man at the age of 25 became ruler of the World Empire of the time. His name was Alexander the Great and he conquered the entire known world in just 13 years.
THE THIRD BEAST: The Grecian Empire of Alexander the Great. 331BC - 168BC
Daniel 7:6, "After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it."
Alexander the Great before his death ordered all Greek cities to worship him as a god. This seems to be a common malady with One-World leaders. The four heads of the beast represent Alexander's four generals. Their names were Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleuchus and Ptolomy. At the death of Alexander the Great the Grecian Empire was divided into four parts. Each commanded by one of the four Generals.
As with Belshazzar so with Alexander the Great. In a drunken fit Alexander the Great drank down the Herculean cup full of alcohol. This cup was a huge thing and he drank it down twice. He died of alcohol poisoning soon afterwards.
THE FOURTH BEAST: The Roman Empire. 168BC - 476AD
Daniel 7:7-8 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth. It devoured, and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it; and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things."
The fourth beast is conspicuously missing from the description of the Beast from the Sea prior to the opening of the Abyss. The Beast from the Sea is a hybrid of the first three Empires seen by Daniel in his vision of the four beasts. After the opening of the Abyss the Beast from the Sea will go a drastic change and be changed into a Roman Empire reborn.
Daniel states that the Roman Empire was distinctly dissimilar or different from the three kingdoms that came before it. It was a dreadful and terrible beast, exceedingly strong and violent. This new Roman Empire reborn will be no less dreadful and terrible. It will sweep up the world in a violent overthrow using the 200,000,000 demon/men army to destroy any resistance that the world now weakened by the first five trumpet warnings might provide.
The only relief the world will have is that this Kingdom will only reign a short time before being thrown into the lake of fire which is symbolic of eternal destruction.
Daniel 7:7-8, "After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things."
In 168BC Rome conquered Greece. Rome ruled the world with an iron fist. If anyone would come against Rome they would just send in their legions and crush any resistance. Since the Roman legions traveled on their feet Rome built magnificent roads throughout their Empire. Their great feats of engineering are world renown.
The ten horns of the dragon, the ten horns of the beast of Daniel as well as the ten toes on Nebuchadnezzar's idol (Dan. 2) all represent the same ten kingdoms each having a king. These ten kingdoms come from the fall of the Roman Empire.
When the Roman Empire crumbled it was divided into ten divisions each governed by one of ten Roman generals. The ten divisions were the Alemani (Germany), the Franks (France), the Burgundians (Switzerland), the Suevi (Portugal), the Anglo-Saxons (Britain), the Visigoths (Spain), the Lombards (Italy), the Vandals, Ostrogoths, and Heruli.
The last three were destroyed by the Roman Catholic church because they refused to become "Christian." These are the three kings (horns) that were subdued in Daniel 7:24.
Since a horn represents a king in prophetic symbolism and it was the Roman Catholic church that destroyed the Vandals, Ostrogoths and Heruli. Then it stands to reason that the Pope who is the ruler, or king, of the Roman Catholic Church must be the diverse horn of Daniel 7:24.
The Beast from the Sea represents a future New World Order. Just as the dragon represents the person of Satan and Rome so also does the Beast from the Sea represent an Empire as well as its leader. This empire will include many of the same characteristics of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. The Beast from the Sea will also receive its power, seat and authority from the dragon, which is Satan or metaphorically speaking, Rome.
The dragon will be worshipped, then the beast and eventually the living image of the beast. Satan will be worshipped because he is the source of the power of the beast. The new empire that the dragon gives its power to will be an awesome sight. There will never have been an empire with such strength, majesty or dominance. Like Babylon this empire will encompass the entire earth. Like Medo-Persia the government will be seen as infallible. Like Greece, the military leadership of the empire will be without parallel and like Rome the empire will crush all that oppose it and will have a man-god king.
There is a saying that goes something like this, "We'll give him just enough rope to hang himself with." For the first three and a half years of the great tribulation while the trumpet warnings are going forth and after Israel has signed the seven year covenant with the beast from the sea the beast will be given free reign to do as he will. During this time the false prophet will erect the living image of the beast and demand that the whole world worship the beast's image.
Again at this point the world will start to lay the blame for all of the calamities that are happening on the Christians. Just as Hitler blamed the Jews for all of Germany's problems, so will the Christians be blamed for all of the problems that are now troubling the world.
Since society has to blame someone for their troubles the blame will lie on the Christians. The Christians will be immune and protected from many of the troubles that beset the world at this point and they will be hated by the world for this. The world will reason that since the locusts do not affect them, then the Christians must have sent them. They imagine that if they get rid of the Christians they will get rid of the problem.
All of the world will find a new religion to follow except for those recorded in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world. This includes the 144,000 plus all converted during the seven trumpet warnings.
THE BEAST FROM THE LAND - THE FALSE PROPHET
Revelation 13:11-18, "And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
Revelation 19:20 names the second beast as the false prophet. The false prophet will receive his power from the beast from the sea, which in turn gained his power from Satan. The false prophet is limited in his power. He will have all of the power of the first beast only while in the presence of the first beast. Since the first beast also represents a kingdom as well as it's leader, as long as the false prophet remains in the kingdom of the first beast he will be able to perform his great signs and wonders. It also stands to reason that outside the kingdom of the first beast the false prophet will be powerless. This is yet another reason why the beast from the sea and the false prophet will come against Christians.
Christians have but one King and His name is Jesus. Having another King makes us members of a kingdom other than that of the beast from the sea. The false prophet will be powerless to influence Christians since they are outside of the kingdom of the beast from the sea.
The false prophet will be the campaign manager of the New World Order. Through his signs and wonders he will deceive the world into following the beast from the sea. That is, he will deceive all of the world except the 144,000 Jews and those that have come to Christ during the first three and a half years of the great tribulation. Christians will become the thorns in Satan's flesh at this time.
The false prophet is not empowered to actually come against Christians and overcome them. This power resides only with the beast from the sea Rev. 13:7. Since it is the false prophet's job is to make the whole world follow the beast from the sea; he will have to deal with these Christians who are continually making trouble.
At this time Satan initiates his most diabolical plan to rid the world of these pesky Christians who continually hinder his purposes. It is not a new plan for Satan for he had tried it once before in the time of Daniel.
In Daniel chapter three we are told that Nebuchadnezzar erected a great image of gold. He then ordered all of the chief officials of the provinces of Babylon to come together and hear an official edict. The edict stated that whenever you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, dulcimer or bagpipe and every kind of music you are to fall down and worship the golden image. Being cast into a fiery furnace would kill whoever did not fall down and worship the golden idol.
Now the false prophet will resurrect this same edict. He will make an image of the beast of the sea and impart life to it. Then an edict will be passed in the New World Order that states that whoever does not worship the beast will be killed.
Now this is where the diabolical cunning comes in. Since it is impossible to get the whole world to come to the place where the image is, the false prophet issues another edict. A mark will be made available to all and this would be a sign of ones worship. Just as in Nebuchadnezzar's time whenever you heard any kind of music you had to worship the image of gold so also every time a person uses this mark to buy or sell it is an act of worship to the image of the beast.
Requiring the world to receive this mark serves two purposes. The first purpose is to make the entire world worship the beast from the sea by receiving it. The second purpose is to identify and separate those who will not comply.
There is no death sentence associated with receiving the mark, since it is only a sign of one's devotion. Of course we know that those who do receive the mark will be partakers of the wrath of God and will remain on the earth through the seven bowl plagues Rev. 14:9-11. At the end of the bowl plagues those marked persons who remain will be thrown into the lake of fire with the beast and the false prophet Rev. 19:20.
Those who do not receive the mark will be required to show their fidelity by worshipping the image of the beast from the sea. If they do not worship the image, then they will be killed. There will be many that refuse to worship the image of the beast or receive its mark. These persons will be martyred and then the number of the brethren of the martyrs under the altar (fifth seal) will be complete. These persons are also the people who are mentioned in Rev. 15:2. They are standing next to the glassy sea mixed with fire and have gained the victory over the beast, over his image, over his mark and over the number of his name.
At that point all Christian influence will be removed from the world and the bowls full of the wrath of God, mixed with the final plagues will be poured out upon the earth. — at www.apocalypsetheunveiling.com.
A short historical presentation
1. The Pre-Croatian Period
If we were to judge by the caves existing in the area of Brotnjo as well as in the parish of Medjugorje, we can't completely exclude the possibility of habitation as far back as the older Stone Age period. From the later Stone Age period, there is material proof of the existence of a pre-Illyrian culture and civilisation in the area. In the older Bronze Age, there is evidence of Illyrian tribes. Copper objects found in the area are proof of an intensive lifestyle. Some walled settlements on the higher points, so-called "gradine" (castle ruins), which were either circular or square in shape, date from this period. A double wall surrounded some of them. In the parish of Medjugorje, there are still existing examples of the double-walled "gradine": in Surmanci and above Medjugorje itself in Zuzelj. Apart from the "gradine", the most eloquent evidence of the Illyrian civilisation (which is abundant in Brotnjo and indeed in the area of Medjugorje itself) are the graves of the Illyrian dignitaries.
In the second century before Christ, the Daors allied themselves with the Romans and waged war with the Illyrian tribes of Dalmatia. Brotnjo first belonged to the Illyrian province of Dalmatia, which has its administrational seat in Solin near Split, and from the third century to the setting of Narona. The writings on the gravestones testify that Roman legions and cohorts were situated in the area, and that Roman veteran soldiers lived there. There remain some parts of a road from the time of the Romans, constructed in the 3rd century. Apart from that, many Roman memorial tombstones and objects of everyday use have been found. The most significant archaeological site from the Roman time is to be found in the Catholic cemetery in Miletina, where some vestiges of buildings made of Roman bricks have been discovered, but it hasn't been sufficiently examined.
2. The Beginnings of Croatian History
At the end of the 6th century, Croatians began to establish themselves in these regions. The region of Brotnjo represented a tribal political-territorial unit, a district, with a tribal regional chief, a district prefect.
Brotnjo always belonged to the land of Hum, which in 1322 fell under Bosnian administration. From 1357, this area then belonged to the Hungarian Croatian King, Ljudevit I.
From the mediaeval period, the most famous memorials of the civilisation in this region are the "stecak" - truly indigenous autochthones grave memorials. In many ways the "stecak" from Herzegovina are superior to those from the rest of Bosnia, Herzegovina and Croatia; in the number and in the dimension of burial grounds, in the beauty of their ornamentation, and in their worth regarding artful elaboration. In Brotnjo itself there are many burial grounds and "stecak", likewise in the area of Medjugorje. Man-formed crosses with arms raised in prayer are sculpted into some of them.
Up to the 12th century, this area was Glagolitic. The famous “Plaque of Humac” testifies to this. In the second half of the 12th century a form of the Cyrillic alphabet called “Bosancica” prevailed. In the area of Brotnjo, not one mediaeval Latin inscription is to be found, only Croatian inscriptions written in “Bosancica”.
3. The Period of Turkish Occupation
Christianity arrived to the area surrounding Medjugorje in the time of the Romans. Judging by the amount of early Christian church ruins it was extensively widespread. In large part they were destroyed, and churches were levelled to the ground during the time of the migration in the 6th and 7th centuries after Christ. The Croatian settlers accepted Christianity very early: They started to be baptised as early as the 7th century. However, the Catholic Church never became really solidly established in the mediaeval Croatian Bosnian state, which facilitated the expansion of the "Bosnian Church." In the 13th century, the Croatian Bosnian state, which included the land of Hum (Herzegovina), was firstly visited by the Dominican missionaries and, after their lack of results, the Franciscan missionaries who accomplished great success in bringing the Bogumils or “Bosnian Christians” back to the Catholic Church and the Catholic faith.
Bosnia and Herzegovina fell under Turkish power in the year 1463. The Turkish invaders wished to occupy the whole of Croatia too, to reach Vienna and Rome, and likewise further west. On their way, the Croatians stopped them; for this reason, the Pope proclaimed them to be the "bulwark of Christianity". Croatia had nevertheless to pay a high price. Not only were many Croatian lives lost in continuous warfare, but the central part of Croatia - its heart - was also snatched away: Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The life of the Catholics under Turkish rule was constantly exposed to the forced passage into Islam, to oppression and to persecution. Under the Turkish feudal system, no Croatian could possess anything immovable. Catholics were permanently considered as “enemies of the state,” because their head was in “enemy” territory: Rome. Croatians subsisted from stock bearing and work on the properties of Turkish invaders and of local landlords who embraced Islam; they were paying large taxes in stock, corn, grain and even children. The Turks forcefully snatched their children, made them embrace Islam and used them as Janissaries, special-force units for the purpose of conquering the still unconquered Christian lands, among others their own Croatian country. For this reason, many Croatians were driven to flee westwards. This is how the Moslem element entered into Bosnia and Herzegovina. Up until the time of Turkish occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the area was almost completely inhabited by Croatians. As the Turkish broke in from the east, the Serbs migrated westwards fleeing from them, but later on they helped them in their conquests, and arrived in these areas where heretofore they had never been.
4. The Role of the Franciscans
The activities of the Franciscans in these areas from the very time of their arrival had a major influence on the survival of Croatians under cultural, religious and every other aspect. The Franciscans emerged in Croatian regions in the first decades of the 13th century. During the whole time of the Turkish occupation (1463 to 1878), the Franciscans were the only ones who tended to the spiritual needs of the Croatian Catholics in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and their only representatives and defenders in front of the Turkish administration. In every way, the Franciscans shared the plight of their people. After the Turks had destroyed all of the Franciscan monasteries in Herzegovina, in the first half of the 16th century, the spiritual care for the Croatian Catholics was taken over by Franciscans from the Christian Dalmatia, i.e. Croatia. During the Turkish administration, the Franciscans were persecuted, tortured and killed, many thrown alive into the river Neretva... After the Turkish rule, only the ruins of the Franciscan monasteries were left.
The first Franciscan Province to be set up in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina was the Bosnian Franciscan Province. In 1852, the Herzegovinian Custody was established, and in 1892 the Herzegovinian Franciscan province was founded, members of which serve today in the parish of Medjugorje.
The Franciscans have left indelible tracks in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many have enriched the Croatian Church with their personal holiness and heroic witnessing of the Gospel; they educated the population, and contributed to the alphabetisation and the development of art and science.
In the great wars of the 17th century the majority of parishes in Herzegovina were destroyed, among them the parish of Medjugorje. When relative peace returned to Herzegovina in the 18th century, the Franciscans gathered the remaining believers together and established parishes. The parish of Medjugorje was founded in the year 1892.
5. The Austro-Hungarian Administration of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Creation of Early Yugoslavia
After liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy took power in these areas. For political reasons, it didn't want to include the newly liberated areas in the Croatian state to which they historically belonged. And so, once again in history, the Croatian people of Bosnia and Herzegovina remained separated from the motherland.
In the year 1914, the First World War began, the reason being the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, carried out by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian. In 1918, at the end of the First World War, Yugoslavia was fraudulently brought into existence as the kingdom of Serbians, Croatians and Slovenians. This fraud was brought about by the big powers of the time. In this state, the Croatian people were oppressed, and the parliamentarian who fought for the freedom of Croatians was perfidiously killed in the Parliament, in Belgrade, in 1928. In 1929, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was established, which was to crumble at the beginning of the Second World War.
6. Life in the Second Yugoslavia
During the Second World War, the losses of the Croatian people were immense. At the end of the war itself, when the cease-fire had already been officially declared, about 300,000 civilians and soldiers lost their lives at Bleiburg and at what is called the "Way of the Cross" of the Croatian people. According to attained agreements, the Allies were supposed to offer refuge to Croats after their surrender, and to others who were seeking to evade communism. But the Allies, according to the order of the field-martial general Harold Alexander, handed the soldiers and the civilians over to the communists – the partisans. In Bleiburg alone a multitude lost their lives, while the rest of them had to form a 60km long line taking them to the communist Yugoslavia and it's concentration camps. This was the beginning of the Croatian Golgotha, the so-called "Way of the Cross,” which extended from the most northern to the most southern point of the new multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia. The Partisans killed the Croatians while walking, without trial, without establishing their eventual culpability, at their own discretion. Especially persecuted were the Croatians from Herzegovina.
The communists killed 630 priests and nuns from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alone in the Herzegovinian Franciscan province, 70 Franciscans were killed. The Second World War took 344 lives from the parish of Medjugorje.
In the parish of Medjugorje, life under communist rule was hard. People were beaten and sentenced to years in prison just because they were Catholics and Croatians. In schools, just as elsewhere in Croatia, the communists tried to separate children from their national identity and their faith. Thanks to the strong faith of the people, they didn't succeed in this.
At the same time, the area was systematically economically neglected, with the aim of having as many people as possible leave the area… The pilgrims, who came here at the very beginning of the apparitions, saw all this in action. They found here a very poor region and very rude policemen. The administration didn't permit the slightest help in accommodating the pilgrims; instead, many of them - together with the locals - were persecuted and imprisoned, just because they said that Our Lady was appearing. However, the local people were hospitable and had their standards.
7. Liberation
The communist tyranny fell in 1990, when the Croatian people unanimously decided for the independence and breakaway from the artificially created Yugoslavia. This, certainly, didn't tie in with the idea of Great Serbian, so the Yugoslavian army, made up primarily of Serbs, militarily attacked Slovenia on the 25th of June 1991 (the tenth anniversary of Our Lady's apparitions), then Croatia and afterwards Bosnia and Herzegovina, desiring to suffocate independence. Several hundred thousands lost their lives during this bloody war. The world could have stopped this bloodshed. It didn't do this because of their respective interests. The E.E.C. kept on condemning the warring sides, hoping to wash its hands and save Yugoslavia as a multinational state, which could be used to further their own aims. James Baker, the Prime Minister of the Bush administration, even permitted the Yugoslav army to attack Slovenia.
European and world powers sought out and still seek their own interests in these areas. Because of that, they tried and continue to try to fog-up this war presenting it as a civil war in which all were equal. The truth is, however, completely different and very simple: The Serbs, wanting to create the Great Serbia, attacked other peoples which up until then had lived with them in the same state. They were able to do this because, in ex-Yugoslavia, all the power was in their hands. The major world powers had chosen them as the "policemen" of the Balkans, and because of this, they looked benignly on their actions. Even when they had committed the first genocide, as in Vukovar, the major world powers didn't want to stop them. They only began to stop them when they exceeded every measure, and began to injure the reputation of their protectors.
The warfare between Croatians and the Moslem community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (in 1993) began as a series of misunderstandings, but also out of a desire of some foreign intelligence services to occupy as much as possible of the territories in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to consolidate there. The Croatians simply desired that no one other than themselves govern them anymore. They wanted to have their own schools, to be allowed to call their own language Croatian, while remaining in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Moslem community, the largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by a fundamentalist leadership, wanted to administrate the new state according to the Islamic law and to impose its rule upon the others. For this reason, they brought into the country the Islamic soldiers - mudjahedins - from all over the world, who committed terrible crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This war, however, was stopped very rapidly because it was really not needed.
Today, Medjugorje is a part of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Because of the communist administration and the terrible war, the infrastructure of Medjugorje is still underdeveloped. This however, didn't stop pilgrims from coming here, even during the cruelest clashes of the war. Many of them brought aid, thus helping the Croatian people to remain where they were. The Croatian people will never forget this. Today, pilgrims are coming more and more. They want to experience this time of grace with their whole hearts, and not let it pass them by.

JO TAMBÉ ESTAVA AL PARLAMENT... I HO TORNARIA A FER

I was at the Catalan Parliament too…
and I would do it again
On March 31st the court case against the 20 people who are charged with an attempt to block the Catalan Paliament on June 15th 2012 will begin. That day in June, the process of implementing the first round of budget cuts in Catalonia began. Cuts that involved closing public companies, the privatization of health care,as well as cuts in the area of culture, education, etc.
The mobilization “Aturem el Parlament” (“Paralize the Parliament”), took place two weeks after the brutal eviction of Plaza Catalunya (Barcelona), by the riot police Mossos d´Esquadra under the command of Felip Puig. He was the minister of the Interior at that time and is currently the minister of companies and labour. He was also responsible for the police operation that shot Esther Quintana in the eye.
The criminalization by the media (that is funded by the state) and the increase of repression which followed (court cases against people trying to prevent an eviction in the neighbourhood of el Clot, many detentions during the general strikes, absurd fees for people protesting or hanging banners with tape etc), was, and still is, a planned response to try to stop the rise of outrage and the strength of popular demostrations against economic and political power, and other daily injustices (such as patriarchy and racism).
During those days, people organized themselves all over to build and create politics from the streets, as many of us continue to do. The politics we want are based in assemblies, horizontal, self-organized, without leaders; they belong to the people and they are for the people, and clash with the institutional politics which govern us. The same institutional politics and their protagonists are creating a corruption spiral and have relationships, mostly family-based, with private companies (that receive contracts for public constructions) and with high-up people with economic power.
That day we were thousands of people trying to paralyze the Catalan Parliament in order to fight the drama of so many lives embedded in misery, the layoffs due to the cuts, the suicides due to evictions, etc. Because many of these atrocities are approved behind the walls of that building. This is the reason that we were pointing out the guilty ones that 25 of June 2012, and because of this, we would to it again without fear. Because we legitimize our action, and because if we, the people from the street -whom are the most affected-, don´t fight, nobody will do it for us.
We know that this is a political court case, a farce to scare those who decide to stand up and take action against thoseresponsibleforall this precariousness. In fact, we reaffirm our ideals and actions after proving that direct action and the creation of alternatives of life bothers them, a lot. Because of this, and because we are aware of the power we can have when we are organized, we don´t want to bow down to their intimidation. We call for a spread of solidarity for all the ones who suffer daily repression and violence within this economic system, in its infinite shapes.
SOLIDARITY WITH ALL THE REPRESSED AND THOSE WHO FIGHT!!
The next time that they take an helicopter, it should be to go far away, and not come back to bother us.

Repression in Spain. A call for international solidarity
During the last three years Spanish society has witnessed a period of intense social protests against austerity, corruption, unemployment and so on. As in other times in history, the greater and more radicalised the protest the bigger the repression that the state organises against it. Since the general strike in September 2010, a common trend of this repression strategy is been a kind of ‘laissez faire’ in the streets but followed by ´selective´ detentions months later. Police have been literally knocking doors down of those who continuously take part in different actions and demonstrations, and consequently dozens of people have been arrested.
On June the 15th 2011, ten thousand people surrounded the Catalan parliament in Barcelona. That day the government wanted to approve a vast austerity cut in health and education, and the idea was to block politicians from getting into the building. “Inexplicably” the police did not protect some politicians, which caused direct confrontation with protesters, and of course that fact was used by the media as an example of violence against democracy. After that, people were violently dispersed, and the MPs could do their job.
On October the 4th 2011, 22 people were arrested in their homes. They have been accused of a crime against the state, using a law designed for coup leaders and that had never been used before in Spain. They now face a penalty of up to 8 years in jail, whereas some of them have been also accused of different crimes related to other demonstrations. The trial will start in March the 31st 2014 and it is expected to last four days.
There will be a national day of solidarity in Spain on March the 29th with demonstrations in several cities. So we also call for international solidarity.
You can call, email or block different Spanish embassies or institutions. Or you can do whatever you consider appropriate…

We know this is a political trial, a farce to scare those who choose to stand up and take action against those responsible for such precarious living conditions. In fact, we reaffirm it to find that both direct action against the powerful and generate alternative lives bothers them a lot. For this reason, and because we understand the power that we can have as we organise ourselves, we do not want to bow to their intimidation and we make a call to extend solidarity to those suffering the daily repression and violence of this economic system, in its myriad forms”.

Exterior view of the Union Carbide pesticide factory scene of the world's worst industrial disaster.
Interior shot of the factory before it was stripped of some of its most valuable components and subsequently abandoned to the elements.
The factory remains ruined and abandoned to this day and there are approximately 350 Metric tonnes of highly toxic waste stored above ground.
Of greater concern are the many thousands of tonnes of toxic waste that were buried, in an untreated state, on the site.
Rain water runs through his waste, along with the remains of the abandoned solar evaporation ponds, and leaches toxic chemicals in to the local ground water aquifer.
The toxic plume has now spread for miles from the factory and many thousands of impoverished people have been using it, for decades, as their primary water supply.

JO TAMBÉ ESTAVA AL PARLAMENT... I HO TORNARIA A FER

Bouley Bay is on the north coast of Jersey. It nestles below Jersey's tallest cliffs, 400 feet high, and shares its name, derived from bouleau, a birch tree, with eight French villages
Safe anchorage
The bay is in some ways the ideal spot for a harbour. There is safe, deep anchorage with at least six fathoms of water close to the shore. It was already called a port in the Extente of 1274. It was called Portus de Boley, the Port of Bouley. Dumaresq wrote in 1685: "Here has been a design to build a mole, which might be made to secure great ships from all winds or weathers, the materials being at hand." But the steepness of the hills would have made it difficult to transport the cargoes, nor could a town of any size have been built on them.
The small pier was not constructed until 1828, although some 150 years earlier it was considered a possible location for a substantial harbour. However, there was too little land at sea level to allow for any significant buildings to be constructed and access was extremely difficult, so the plan never came to fruition. The pier was built by the States for the oyster fishermen and for defence, and the initials of the contractor, F de la Mare, can be seen engraved in the harbour wall.
On the cliff top immediately to the South is Jardin d'Olivet, where in 1549 French invaders who had already occupied Sark were repulsed by the Militia and forced to retreat and head for St Malo. During the English Civil War Parliamentary troops landed at Bouley Bay aiming to capture prominent Royalists, but most had already sought refuge in Mont Orgueil and Elizabeth Castle.
After the Riot of 1769 Colonel Bentinck disembarked his Highlanders here and marched into the town to restore order.
Such a danger spot obviously had to be guarded. When the first three cannon arrived in Jersey, apart from those in the castle, one was placed in the bay; and from that day forward the States were constantly discussing further defences. Two bulwarks were made, and a guard-house and two magazines. A beacon was erected to give the alarm signal. Then L'Etaquerel Fort was built on the east of the bay and on the west a two-gun battery was erected above the present pier. This is called the Leicester battery, and a demi-culverin had been installed there in 1596, hence the name, after the Elizabethan Earl of Leicester. In 1835 a lower battery was built at L'Etaquerel, and the one on the west was replaced by a larger five-gun battery.
Hill Climb
The Bouley Bay Hill Climb is one of the island's most popular sporting events, attracting large crowds to the slopes of the hill for its three runnings each year, including an international event.
The story of Bouley Bay mirrors the development of the military, shipping and tourism in Jersey from the 16th to the 21st century. It is the people of the area and the effect of these developments on their lives which bring the stories of Bouley Bay to life. In July 1549 a French expedition landed at Bouley Bay. They met the local militia at Jardin d’Olivet and after a fight in which the Lieut-Bailiff, Jurat Helier de la Rocque, was killed, the French were defeated and retired to St Malo with their dead and wounded.
Fortifications
The battle of 1549 must have influenced the States decision in 1596 to place a cannon at the harbour. The responsibility for its upkeep was divided between the Constables of Trinity, St Martin, St John and Grouville.
Developments in fortifications at Bouley Bay continued throughout the French and Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. On 5 May 1807 the States approved a proposal that a magazine in stone be built to lodge the munitions and cannon of the battery of the harbour.
A record of the fortifications of the Island compiled in 1857 includes a number of details concerning the defences at Bouley Bay. The fortifications listed are Vicart Battery, Les Hurets Battery, Leicester Battery, Bouley Battery, Les Charriers, Hommet, l’Islet and Le Tacqueral. The volume records that since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 ‘a powerful enclosed battery near the pier has been constructed’.
Harbour
It was in the 19th century that a number of harbours, including Bouley Bay, were developed. The rise of the oyster fishing industry led to a significant number of boats being moored around the bays of the Island and increased calls from the fishermen for protection for their vessels.
In 1826 petitions addressed to the States of Jersey were received from a large number of inhabitants of different parishes concerning the harbours of La Rocque, Bouley and Rozel. The petitioners asked for protection for boats in those areas.
In November 1826 the States authorised the construction of a jetty at Bouley Bay. The construction of the original jetty sheltered the fishing fleet, but in 1839 a second petition from the fishermen asked for additional works at the harbour. The additional works to extend the jetty were drawn up by Mr Walker in 1845 and then revised by architects Le Sueur and Bree in 1869.
Drowning
As is the case with many of the bays around the island, a number of stories exist of individuals drowning in the sometimes hazardous waters of Bouley Bay.
In 1880 newspapers reported an accident in Bouley Bay in which Bienaime Le Fillastre drowned just outside the harbour. The inquest found that Bienaime was well known for his ‘drunken habits’ and that at 2.45 on the morning of the accident he and T Le Masurier had knocked on the door of the hotel and purchased a bottle of brandy, and borrowed the key to the stable where Le Masurier kept his boat.
The hotel keeper, who was a witness at the inquest, was Thomas Perree. He is described in 1881 as a 22-year-old who was married to Emily, who was 34. The hotel which Thomas and Emily ran was the establishment that became the Water’s Edge.
Banker's downfall
Significant residential properties in the Bouley Bay area include Rockmount, which, with its gardens, was built by Josue Le Bailly on land that he purchased from Charles Nicolle and Jean Sinel in 1857. In the 1861 census Josue was 49 and was listed as a Jurat, banker and ship owner. In his lifetime he had links with the Jersey Imperial Hotel Company, was a trustee of the Jersey Savings Bank, and was Procureur du Bien Public for St Helier.
He was also the chairman of the Jersey Mercantile Union Bank, which opened in 1834 and dramatically suspended payments on 1 February 1873. This was the leading bank in the island and it closed with liabilities of £300,000 and assets of only £30,000.
Josue Le Bailly was sent to prison on 18 February for ‘breach of trust’. He was put on trial for embezzlement and culpable fraud and neglect at the Criminal Assizes in May 1873. The trial was eagerly followed and reported in the newspapers because Le Bailly had been a popular and respected figure in the island and the closure of the bank had a significant impact on many islanders.
The trial continued for 11 days, with Advocate Henry Le Vavasseur dit Durell representing the defence. The newspapers recorded in detail the summing up, with Advocate Durell giving a spirited oration, talking of Nicolle as ‘the man whom not three months ago we looked upon with pride, as the ornament of our judicial bench, the father whom everybody loved and respected, to be arrested in the middle of the night, in the midst of his family, to be cloistered up within the four walls of a prison and, oh horror, dragged from the court to the prisonh, and from the prison to court, in that vehicle which usually contains convicts of the first order’.
The main defence was mental infirmity, with Advocate Durell highlighting that his client had suffered an accident on leaving his house at Bouley Bay in July 1869. He had fallen from his carriage and fractured his skull, leaving him senseless for seven days. The advocate also brought witnesses to attest to Nicolle’s change in mental state after the accident. He painted a picture of a man who had memory lapses and could at times be well, and at other times incoherent.
The jury found him guilty of three of the counts of which he was accused and sentenced him to five years penal servitude.
One of the main events in the island’s motor sport calendar is the Bouley Bay Hill Climb, which is organised by the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club. The first hill climb took place in 1920 and the events continued through the 1920s and 30s, until they were stopped by the German Occupation.
The club was quick to organise races after the Occupation and the ‘’Evening Post’’ of 8 February 1946 highlighted the plans for motor racing in the island in the autumn, with a proposed hill climb at Bouley Bay. The following year Bouley Bay was one of only five venues in the inaugural British Hill Climb Championship, and has held championship events ever since.
High cliffs
From the Nez de Guet, where Rozel Bay ends, to Vicard Point, where Bouley Bay ends, is about one and half miles as the crow flies. Here the coastline is mainly backed by 200-300 feet cliffs. Immediately to the west of the Nez de Guet is a small cove called Le Sauchet, which means ‘a place drenched with spray‘.
The next headland is the Tour de Rozel, with its widely recognised White Rock and tidal race, which has been the scene of a number of shipwrecks over the years. In April 1887 the 30-ton coaster Normandy foundered here while running for shelter. The only survivor was the ship’s boy, who was found the following morning clinging to the cutter’s upturned small boat.
The rough pasture on these cliffs was used in medieval times to graze the coarse fleeced multi-horned sheep that were the foundation for the island’s famed knitting industry; although islanders very soon realised that more money was to be made by importing the better quality English wool for their product.
The popular notion of Bouley Bay is the area from l’Etacquerel to the pier. L’Etacquerel comes from the old Norse word for a heap or a stack of rock – stakkr. This can still be seen just below the 19th century fort. The meaning of Bouley Bay, however, is a bit uncertain; one theory is that it comes from the old Norse words for a dwelling and a bay – bol and vik.
Just beyond L’Etacquerel Fort lie the remains of the ss Ribbledale, which was wrecked on the night of 26/27 December 1926. She was waiting to take on a cargo of granite from Ronez when she dragged her anchor during a gale and was driven ashore. The captain and crew succeeded in reaching shore in a small boat, but one of the firemen was missing. He turned up safe later in the day having ‘slept through the whole affair’.
Deep water anchorage
As early as 1274 the area was referred to as the port of ‘Boley’. In 1602 the States appointed Nicholas Richardson superviseur pour les coustimes des Etats aux Harves de Rozel, Bouley Bay et Ste Catherine. The work was hardly onerous. Despite having long been recognised as the best deep water anchorage in the island the pier is of fairly recent construction. In 1685 Philippe Dumaresq described the bay as “A very good road for any ships about two cables length (370 metres) from the shore, in 12 or 15 fathom water; secure for all southerly and westerly winds ... indeed the fittest place for a harbour of all the island “ although he did qualify it by pointing out that the high cliffs behind it make building and access extremely difficult.
This was also a lesson learned by the French in the summer of 1549, when they tried to mount an attack on the island by landing here. This was actually a diversionary attack designed to draw English resources away from their main campaign in Scotland. The French sent two squadrons of galleys to attack the Channel Islands. An attack on Guernsey was defeated, but they did successfully manage to capture Sark before moving on to Jersey. An English naval force lead by William Wynter defeated the French galleys while the French transports landed soldiers and Italian mercenaries in Bouley Bay. Once assembled Captain Breuil (de Bretagne) lead his men up the steep hill to Jardin d’Olivet, where they were surprised by the Island Militia, armed with their new cannon. Despite being totally defeated, the French managed to get back to their ships and retreat to St Malo.
Two hundred years later the bay saw the arrival of another military force. This time it was Lieutenant Colonel Rudolph Bentinck and four companies – about 200 men - of the Royal Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots). They had been sent to Jersey to restore order after the anti-Lempriere riots in September 1769. This time there was no armed resistance, which is just as well, as by then there were a number of defensive structures around the bay to prevent any such hostile landings.
Before there was a pier several large fishing boats were kept here. They were usually hauled above the high water mark using Crabbs (capstans). When the oyster industry was expanding in the 1820s it was decided to build a pier here, and Abraham de La Mare was commissioned to do the job. His pier, finished in 1827, was 36 metres long and nearly 14 metres high, and completed at a cost of £2,500. It was designed to provide shelter for up to 30 oyster cutters. Six of them were actually built here between 1824 and 1842. The Blampieds built four of them, and the largest - a 40-ton cutter – was built by John Pope in 1826. Over the same period another six open boats were decked over by the Le Masuriers.
Today Bouley Bay is popular with scuba divers and snorkelers. Its sheltered water is home to a wide variety of marine life and in 1993 the States landing barge La Mauve was scuttled about half a mile offshore to create an artificial reef for the enjoyment of recreational divers.
A place of myths
The bay is also associated with a couple of myths. The best known is that of a gigantic black dog with huge saucer-shaped eyes – Le Chien de Bouley (le Tchan du Bouole) - which is said to roam around the area frightening innocent passers-by. This may have been a story circulated by smugglers to keep prying eyes and gossips away from the bay and possible clandestine activity.
The older story associated with the area is the Cry of the Tombelènes, with its local lovers, an army of occupation, murders and suicide set around the cliffs (Les Tombelènes) above the Islet during the French Occupation of 1461 until 1468.
Beyond the pier the cliffs continue to Vicard Point, which takes its name from the old Norse Vik-vartha - the watch hill by the creek. It does not look much today, but in the late 17th century this little creek was referred to as Havre Vicart and described as “Here boats might land passengers but they can only ascend the cliffs in single file”. Sea travellers then were obviously a hardier bunch than todays.

QUOTE: “In 1932 in April a small boy and his mother and father waited on an Oakland, California pier for the San Francisco ferry. The boy, who was almost four years old, noticed a blind beggar, huge and old with white hair and beard, standing with a tin cup. The boy asked his father for a nickel, which the boy took over to the beggar and gave him. The beggar, in a surprisingly hearty voice, thanked him and gave him back a piece of paper, which the boy took to his father to see what it was. “It tells about God,” his father said. from Radio Free Albemuth by Philip K. Dick

Designed & built in Glasgow in 1883, transported in pieces on the “City of York” to Port Adelaide where she was reassembled for use as a tug & lighter in Port Pirie. Sold 1927, converted into a ketch with a diesel engine & 2 masts and served in SA’s coastal ports loading overseas ships with wool, wheat, barley & other goods for export. She was often in the news for running aground or being rammed and requiring repairs. Sold again 1962, she supplied Kangaroo Island until her retirement in 1982, she was removed from the water 2005 and now stands on shore adjacent to the “City of Adelaide’.
“Much inconvenience is felt on account of having no steam-tug in the Port. I believe Captain Wilson, late owner of the craft Star of Hope, has gone to England to purchase a suitable tug in time for next season.” [Port Augusta Dispatch 23 Aug 1882]
“Captain Wilson. . . another vessel to take the place of his Star of Hope. . . The hull, deckhouses, and decks are of iron, and the machinery is of the most modern description, the vessel having compound engines, with horizontal tubular boiler. The vessel is intended for towing and lighterage purposes, and during the construction had been supervised by Captain Wilson. The hull was built in the yard, and when put together the various plates and pieces were marked and numbered to facilitate fixing her up again on arrival here. The material was shipped on board the City of York, and directly it is landed here it will be put together and the craft launched as quickly as possible, when she will take up the old berth at Port Pirie.” [Register 20 Feb 1883]
“A boiler and engines were landed from the ship City of York on Thursday afternoon for a huge steam-tug to be employed at Port Pirie. The hull was also imported in pieces, and the vessel will be put together and rigged out at Port Adelaide.” [Advertiser 13 Apr 1883]
“The new steamer for Captain Wilson, which lately came out from Scotland in sections, is now being put together in Mr. Cruikshank's ship-building yard at Birkenhead, Port Adelaide. It is the largest vessel ever seen is the course of construction on a Port cradle. . .The vessel was designed and built by Messrs. T. B. Seath & Co., of Rutherglen, Glasgow, and is the 229th steamer constructed by them during the last quarter of a century. Seath & Co. are the shipbuilders for the Trinity Board of London, and are considered to be one of the best firms on the Clyde for the building of steamships.” [Advertiser 26 Apr 1883]
“the steamer Nelcebee, destined for the Spencer's Gulf trade, was launched from Cruickshank's shipbuilding-yard. The Nelcebee is an iron-built screw-steamer, 115 feet long, 19 feet beam, and 9 ft. 6 in. depth, and was the 229th boat designed by Mr. Seth, at Glasgow, where she was fitted up. She was sent out in pieces, and put together for Captain Wilson by Mr. Cruickshank.” [Evening Journal 21 Jun 1883]
“Fears are entertained at Port Adelaide in respect to the safety of the steamer Nelcebee, now more than a week overdue from Tasmania. She left Port Adelaide for Circular Head in ballast on August 1, arriving there safely in two or three days. She loaded 12 tons of potatoes for Mr. Charlick, of Port Adelaide, and steamed away in apparently good trim and condition on Tuesday, August 7, since which time she has not been heard of.” [Advertiser 20 Aug 1883]
“Kingscote, August 23. The missing steamer Nelcebee arrived here at 12 o'clock to-day. Captain Wilson reports that he left Circular Head on the 7th August. The wind having veered to the west-north-west he was obliged to go into Sea Elephant Bay, King's Island.” [Register 24 Aug 1883]
“The Nelcebee.— This steamer arrived at the Semaphore on Sunday, having been twenty days out from Circular Head, with a cargo of potatoes. . . all were well on board and had been so throughout. It further transpired that the reason for her non-arrival was the fact that during some very heavy weather the pumps choked with chips and rubbish, to such an extent that on returning to shelter there were seventeen buckets of rubbish and a bucket and a half of rivets taken from the bilges and pump-pipes.” [Register 27 Aug 1883]
“The steamer Nelcebee started for Port Pirie on Saturday. If the prospects of the harvest are only partly confirmed she will prove a valuable adjunct to the trade of that port, as she is adapted specially for towage and lighterage purposes.” [Advertiser 3 Sep 1883]
“Port Augusta. . . The City of Adelaide, for the United kingdom, was towed out on Saturday morning by the Nelcebee.” [Register 22 Oct 1883]
“Port Augusta. . . The last wool ship, the Ascalon, cleared this morning in tow of the Nelcebee. Her cargo, which consists of 4,502 bales of wool, besides several tons of horns, hoofs, and scrap iron, is estimated to be worth about £70,000, being the most valuable sent home this season.” [Weekly Chronicle 27 Oct 1883]
“Port Germein. . . The steamer Nelcebee, with an iron barge in tow, arrived safely with her charge this afternoon. The barge will hold 800 bags of wheat, and will be invaluable for lighterage purposes. The arrival of the Nelcebee and the Parliamentary party at the same time caused a little mild excitement.” [Advertiser 29 Nov 1883]
“Marine excursions seem to have taken on with the public during the last few months, owing, no doubt, to the very hot weather we have been experiencing. St. Patrick's Literary Society having decided to try one, the Steam Tug Company's boat, ‘Nelcebee’, was engaged for Tuesday, when a large crowd left the Semaphore Jetty, their route being towards Brighton, passing the anchorage, thus giving those on board an opportunity of seeing the English Mail Steamer.” [Southern Cross 19 Feb 1897]
“The old favourite Elder Liner Torrens was fully equipped for the homeward voyage on Wednesday, and in the latter part of the afternoon was towed out by the tug Nelcebee. The Torrens takes away a large assorted cargo for London, including 7,135 bags bark, 6.S02 bags concentrates, 1,789 ingots spelter, 1,016 bales wool, a quantity of skins and tallow, and 480 ingots copper. For St. Helena, where the vessel calls en route, she has a large quantity of grain, comprising 1,400 bags flour, 340 bags oats, and some bags of wheat and barley. There is also a consignment of dripping for St. Helena, comprising 340 cases. The Torrens, which left in charge of Captain Angel, had five passengers on board for London.” [Evening Journal 25 Mar 1897]
“Port Pirie. . . Whilst towing the Chiltonford out to-day the Nelcebee swung athwart the stream, and before she could be straightened the Chiltonford drifted on her forcing the Nelcebee's bow through a plate of the Clackmannanshire.” [Advertiser 8 Jun 1897]
“The Adelaide Steamtug Company is said to have entered into a contract with the Broken Hill Proprietary Company to convey about 1,000 tons of ironstone flux from Iron Knob to Port Pirie weekly. It is expected that the hulks York and Urebus, along with the tug Nelcebee, will shortly be dispatched to Port Pirie for this purpose.” [Evening Journal 12 Aug 1901]
“Port Pirie. . . The tug Nelcebee, which left here yesterday for south-east ports to engage in lightering wool, is reported to be ashore on Bird Island, near Wallaroo.” [Register 29 Oct 1901]
“the steamer Nelcebee, which was stranded on Bird Island in heavy weather on Monday last, had been floated. She was got off at 7 o'clock on Friday morning, and left in tow of the launch Mermaid for Wallaroo.” [Advertiser 2 Nov 1901]
“Tugboat Nelcebee collides with dolphin. . . The Nelcebee, with Captain Anderson in charge, left the jetty at Hummocks Hill at .midnight with about nine passengers on board and a barge in tow. A strong ebb tide was running at the time, and this swept the Nelcebee close into the dolphin, some feet away from the jetty, and the vessel hit the obstruction when passing. The captain and crew were so busy attending to the barge that the mishap was not noticed at the time. . . The first mate had a boat lowered, and conveyed the passengers to the jetty. . . When the tide rose there was four feet of water in the cabins and mess room.” [Port Pirie Recorder 29 Feb 1916]
“the Adelaide Steamtug Company's Nelcebee, which has been carrying passengers and cargo between Port Pirie and Whyalla, and was being withdrawn for overhaul.” [Chronicle 5 Jun 1926]
“Wharf visitors at Port Adelaide have expressed curiosity concerning a grey-painted vessel with steamer lines, but having the sailer rig, lying at Darling's Wharf, Birkenhead. A complete transformation. . . few would recognise the craft as the former steamer Nelcebee, which for many years did yeoman service in Spencer's Gulf.” [News 19 Jan 1928]
“Two vessels that changed hands recently were slipped today for repainting below waters mark and to permit other work being done. They are the Eleanor and Nelcebee. Both ships were at one time steam driven and were used for towing purposes. They are now sail rigged, and in both vessels motor engines are to be fitted to provide auxiliary power.” [News 21 Jan 1928]
“A collision occurred in the Port River yesterday afternoon between the Coast Steamship Company's small steamer Warrawee and the ketch Nelcebee, owned by Captain E. Hipkins. . . both vessels escaped without serious damage. At the time of the mishap the Warrawee was preparing to berth at McLaren wharf after completing the passage from Edithburgh, and the ketch was passing from the Basin through Robinson-bridge on her way down to the steamer Anglo Saxon, berthed at Queen's wharf.” [Advertiser 20 Jan 1931]
“The sight of the old Nelcebee — now privately owned and converted into an auxiliary craft-chugging its way down the river on Thursday morning roused recollections of the days when this boat was on the run between here and Hummocky Hill (as Whyalla was then called) under the command of Captain Benton. At least two trips a week used to be made in those times, and probably many will have painful memories of their experiences as passengers. In rough weather the Nelcebee used to have the reputation of being able to do anything but stand on her bow.” [Recorder, Port Pirie 11 Apr 1931]
“Port Victoria. . . Serious consequences were narrowly averted when the schooner Gerard and motor lighter Nelcebee came into collision last night. . . The Nelcebee had loaded 2,100 bags of wheat at Tumby Bay, and was bound for the barque Padua here. . . the Neleelbee's crew was transferred to the Gerard. Captain Hipkins stood by his ship, and when it was seen that there was hope of saving her the crew was recalled. Two hundred and fifty bags of wheat were hastily jettisoned, and with the Gerard standing by, the craft was steered for Wardang Island with all speed. Here the vessel was beached at one a.m. . . Much of the wheat will be damaged.” [Advertiser 27 Jan 1934]
“Temporarily patched up, the Nelcebee has returned to Port Adelaide and is now undergoing extensive repairs on the central slip at Birkenhead. No estimate of the damage has been prepared, but costs of repairs are expected to be heavy. The vessel was damaged six inches below the waterline, just forward of the bridge, and considerable damage was done to the upper decking.” [News 3 Feb 1934]
“The first Court of Marine Enquiry to sit in South Australia since 1918 began the hearing today of serious charges against the masters of two ketches, the Gerard and the Nelcebee.” [News 23 Apr 1934]
“Edward Henry Hipkins, jun., master of the ketch Nelcebee, was found guilty of culpable negligence, and his certificate of competency was suspended for six months. The court added a recommendation that during the period of suspension he should be granted a mate's certificate. Gustav Reinhold Emanuel Bergland, master of the auxiliary schooner Gerard, was found guilty of a technical offence, which in no way reflected upon his competency as a seaman. He was severely censured for not having kept a better look-out.” [News 5 May 1934]
“in the Supreme Court. . . opened the case for Caroline Hipkins, owner of the ship Nelcebee, who sued for £1200 damages from the captain and owners of the ship Gerard, which collided with the Nelcebee near Wardang Island, off Port Victoria, about midnight on January 25. The defendants, Oscar Einar Olsson, of first avenue, Cheltenham, Gustaf R. E. Bergland, of Bower road, Glanville, R. Fricker & Co., Ltd., of Lipson street, Port Adelaide, David Deex, of Durham terrace, Franklin, Percy R. Flicker, of Port Adelaide, and Doreen May Fricker, of Port Adelaide, counterclaimed £900 damages.” [Advertiser 18 May 1934]
“in the Supreme Court in Admiralty Jurisdiction Mr. Justice Piper found that the ship Nelcebee was free from blame in the collision with the Gerard. . . the master of the Gerard was to blame for not having had and maintained a proper look-out, and that the collision was caused by the negligent navigation of the Gerard. Judgment was given for Caroline Hipkins, owner of the Nelcebee, for damages to be decided by the Registrar, and costs to be decided by the court. . . The claim was for £1,200 damages, and by consent it was amended today to £1,800 damages.” [Recorder, Port Pirie 29 Jun 1934]
“Sydney. . . the High Court today dismissed with costs the appeal from Mr. Justice Piper's decision in favor of Caroline Hipkins, owner of the schooner Nelcebee, She had claimed £1,800 damages from the master and owners of the schooner Gerard. . . The master and owners of the Gerard counterclaimed for £900. Mr. Justice Starke considered that both vessels should be held to blame, with the result that the loss should be divided.” [News 29 Dec 1934]
“The fourth court proceedings regarding a collision at sea, near Wardang Island, between the schooners Nelcebee and Gerard, shortly before midnight on January 25, 1934, were begun yesterday, before a specially constituted Court of Marine Enquiry, at the Port Adelaide Courthouse.” [Advertiser 1 Jul 1936]
“The dismissal yesterday of charges against Capt. Edward H. Hipkins, jun., master of the auxiliary schooner Nelcebee, by the Court of Marine Inquiry presided over by Mr. President Kelly, marked the end of a long fight to have his name cleared, following a collision between his vessel and the auxiliary schooner Gerard off Port Victoria on January 25, 1934. . . The Court of Marine Inquiry. . . will report to the Harbors Board. It has no power to order that the certificate endorsement be expunged. . . request for this to be done would be considered by the members of the board.” [The Mail 18 Jul 1936]
“The Minister of Marine (Mr. Hudd) promised to have investigations made as to whether the endorsement on the certificate of the master of the Nelcebee, as a result of the collision with the Gerard, had been removed, in view of his exoneration by the Supreme and High Courts and a second Marine Court.” [Advertiser 29 Jul 1936]
“Additions to Port Nautical Museum. . . Capt. E. H. Hipkins has presented the key of the tug Nelcebee's propeller, taken out when the boiler and engine of that tug were removed, and she was converted to an auxiliary schooner.” [The Mail 1 May 1937]
“The Nelcebee which sailed out of Pirie in the past was a steam tug, and it came back yesterday as an auxiliary schooner. With two masts and a diminutive funnel abaft, the regenerated Nelcebee is for the moment on His Majesty's service, inspecting navigational lights and beacons. . . Now a privately owned vessel, the Nelcebee has been chartered by South Australian Harbors Board for her present trip. . . Her chief employment now is as a carrier of wheat and barley.” [Recorder, Port Pirie 20 Oct 1938]
“the old Nelcebee is still puffing her way round the coast of South Australia with wheat and other cargoes, and occasionally visits Pirie, the port in which, during her prime, she moved and tugged shipping amounting to many hundreds of thousands of tons.” [Recorder, Port Pirie 8 Apr 1939]
“Shipping at Port Vincent. The Nelcebee lifted 1,200 bags of barley on account of T. H. Webb.” [Pioneer, Yorketown 10 May 1940]
“The ketches Nelcebee and John Lewis have been busy lightering the remainder of last season's wheat to overseas ships anchored at Port Lincoln.” [Advertiser 9 Oct 1946]
“The Nelcebee ran aground on rocks and coral 200 yards from the shore about four miles west of Port Turton Jetty about 3 a.m. today. The vessel is holed near the bows, and the forward hold is flooded. Six people in the ketch are unharmed. They are the master (Capt. Brandford), his wife, and two-year-old daughter, and three crew members.” [The Mail 9 Jun 1951]
“The 168-ton ketch Nelcebee, stranded on a reef off Point Turton, Yorke Peninsula, may be abandoned as a total loss. Further attempts to get the Nelcebee off the reef have been left until Monday, when there will be a very low tide.” [News 14 Jun 1951]
“Nelcebee was towed off the rocks near Point Turton today, 12 days after it went aground. After the hull had been packed with 400 empty sealed drums and a canvas had been placed over the holed forward section, two other ketches, the Hawk and John Lewis, towed the Nelcebee to a sandy shore near Point Turton. The ketch was beached and an examination will be made to see if it is safe to tow it back to Port Adelaide.” [Advertiser 22 Jun 1951]
“The ketch Nelcebee will begin fortnightly cargo runs from Port Adelaide to Cowell on Monday week. . . A spokesman for the Nelcebee's owners, M. B. Crouch & Co., said today: 'The ketch will carry about 150 tons of cargo and will take about 36 hours each way. It has Diesel engines and a sail. The crew of six will be commanded by Captain A. H, Branford. The Nelcebee is well known in the SA coastal lightering trade. For many years it has carried grain from small ports to Port Lincoln, Wallaroo, and Port Pirie.” [The Mail 12 Jul 1952]
“Cowell. . . The Nelcebee arrived this week with 50 tons of general cargo and sailed with 400 bales of wool.” [Advertiser 9 Aug 1952]

"Leaders Arrested in Catalonia
BARCELONA: The independent state of Catalonia, which was proclaimed by President Luis Companys at 8.30 last night [Oct. 7], came to an end at 6 o’clock this morning when Spanish troops under General Balet occupied the government buildings and arrested the Catalan President and the members of the Cabinet. Simultaneously the project of proclaiming Spain a federated republic with Manuel Azana, former Premier, as its first President, collapsed. Azana was not to be found all day, but it was reported tonight that he has been arrested at a small port near here as he was about to embark for France."
_____________________________

In February 2012 my wife and I took a break in the Welsh Valleys and paid a visit to the cemetery in the village of Aberfan. I was only nine years old when disaster struck this coal mining community. I was a similar age to the 116 children who lost their lives on that morning of 21st October 1966, when a mountainous avalanche of coal mining waste, buried their school.
The news coverage of that dreadful event echoed throughout Britain and around the world. Horrific images of the event were burned in my psyche. As a young child my heart went out to the people of Aberfan. Memories of their suffering and distress, remain vivid, in my memory.
When reading the gravestone inscriptions the depth of emotional loss that was experienced by those grieving parents, strikes home. They were fully justified in feeling outraged at the authorities. They had the power to prevent such a tragedy but were negligent. However there is no bitterness expressed on these memorials.
Instead, the messages here, reflect only shock, sadness, grief, love and hope. The sentiments are deeply personal and shared with us (the public). It was a humbling privilege to be included, to share in these parting thoughts and wishes.
I noted some recurring themes in the memorial messages. Certainly there was, powerful and enduring affection for those that had been lost. There was also a common sense of bewilderment, begging the question, why? Why did this have to happen. Some seemed committed to the belief that God may have taken their children as angels to heaven. In my experience, this concept is something that divides opinion with strong feelings. Whilst it is understandable that some seek solace from this idea, others might feel uncomfortable with it. They may ask, 'does a loving God do such things i.e. snatch children away from their parents, just to enlarge his own family?'
A child’s untimely death brings great sadness, hurt, and pain. What hope, then, do grieving parents have? According to the Bible writers (inspired by Holy Spirit) there will be a future resurrection on a paradise earth when beloved family members will be reunited. For example, in the Bible book of Acts 24:15 we read, " and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous." And at John 5:28 we read, "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice". There are many other references that, when put together and seen in context, provide a picture for genuine hope.

A must see documentary about the horrible situation in Palestine and how it was back in 2002 - that was 21 years ago; and if you think it was bad then, it is many many more times WORSE now:
John Pilger: Palestine is Still the Issue (2002)
Also, I want to promote a great podcast by Ralph Nader; an american with great integrity and a true sense of justice. In his podcast The Ralph Nader Radio Hour, he has had many really great interviews and discussions about the ongoing conflict; among which I will mention and highly recommend:
- The Punishment of Gaza (published 14 October 2023) - where Nader meets with Haaretz columnist Gideon Levy to discuss recent attacks by Hamas and the Israeli military in Israel and Palestine. Then, international law expert Bruce Fein speaks about the recent violence, America's response, and America's historical culpability.
- A Strategy of Annihilation (published 28 October 2023) - where retired U.S. Army Colonel and senior advisor to the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, Lawrence Wilkerson, offers his experienced and unsparing perspective. Then constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, weighs in on how in this conflict the United States violates a number of international laws.
- A Genocide Tax (published 4 November 2023) - A truly excellent interview with Craig Mokhiber, who just resigned his post as the director in the New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the United Nations over the UN response to the bombing of Gaza. Also, a talk with CODEPINK peace activist, Medea Benjamin, who was recently arrested at a hearing on Capitol Hill, featuring Secretary of State Antony Blinken, for protesting the weapons bill for Israel moving through Congress - a protest worthy of the history books!
- The numbers as per 6 November 2023 -

in Lieu Of Treason
I remember once reading that sentence. "In Lieu of Treason", like that in english. I thought it meant "guilty of treason"
I remembered it because I was reading the other day an article, an the words "In lieu of" appeared again. So I looked upon their meaning. Turns out it means "instead of".
So now I am wondering, what consecuences did it had on the reading of the rest of whatever I was readin, when I thoug it said "guilty of treason", when it actually was "instead of treason"

in Lieu Of Treason

ALLEGATIONS OF ANTI SEMITISM
Before the film was even released, there were allegations of anti-Semitic content in the movie. 2
0th Century Fox told New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind they had passed on distributing the film in response to a protest outside the News Corp. building.
Hikind warned other movie companies that "they should not distribute this film.
This is unhealthy for Jews all over the world."[17]
A joint committee of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Inter-religious Affairs of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Department of Inter-religious Affairs of the Anti-Defamation League obtained a version of the script before it was released in theaters.
They released a statement, calling it one of the most troublesome texts, relative to anti-Semitic potential, that any of us had seen in twenty-five years.
It must be emphasized that the main storyline presented Jesus as having been relentlessly pursued by an evil cabal of Jews, headed by the high priest Caiaphas, who finally blackmailed a weak-kneed Pilate into putting Jesus to death.
This is precisely the storyline that fueled centuries of anti-Semitism within Christian societies.
This is also a storyline rejected by the Roman Catholic Church at Vatican II in its document Nostra Aetate, and by nearly all mainline Protestant churches in parallel documents . . . .
Unless this basic storyline has been altered by Mr. Gibson, a fringe Catholic who is building his own church in the Los Angeles area and who apparently accepts neither the teachings of Vatican II nor modern biblical scholarship, The Passion of the Christ retains a real potential for undermining the repudiation of classical Christian anti-Semitism by the churches in the last forty years.[50]
The ADL itself also released a statement about the yet to be released movie:
For filmmakers to do justice to the biblical accounts of the passion, they must complement their artistic vision with sound scholarship, which includes knowledge of how the passion accounts have been used historically to disparage and attack Jews and Judaism.
Absent such scholarly and theological understanding, productions such as The Passion could likely falsify history and fuel the animus of those who hate Jews.[51]
Rabbi Daniel Lapin, the South African-born head of the Toward Tradition organisation, criticized this statement, and said of Foxman, the head of the ADL, "what he is saying is that the only way to escape the wrath of Foxman is to repudiate your faith."[52]
In The Nation, reviewer Katha Pollitt said, "Gibson has violated just about every precept of the (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) conference's own 1988 "Criteria" for the portrayal of Jews in dramatizations of the Passion (no bloodthirsty Jews, no rabble, no use of Scripture that reinforces negative stereotypes of Jews, etc.) ...
The priests have big noses and gnarly faces, lumpish bodies, yellow teeth; Herod Antipas and his court are a bizarre collection of oily-haired, epicene perverts.
The "good Jews" look like Italian movie stars (Italian sex symbol Monica Bellucci is Mary Magdalene); Mary, who would have been around 50 and appeared 70, could pass for a ripe 35."[53]
Jesuit priest Fr. William Fulco, S.J., of Loyola Marymount University — and the film's Aramaic dialogue translator — specifically disagreed with that assessment, and disagreed with concerns that the film accused the Jewish community of Deicide.[54]
One specific scene in the movie perceived as an example of anti-Semitism was in the dialogue of Caiaphas, when he states "His blood [is] on us and on our children!", a quote historically interpreted by some as a curse taken upon by the Jewish people.
Certain Jewish groups asked this be removed from the film.
However, only the subtitles were removed; the original dialogue remains in Aramaic soundtrack.[55]
When asked about this scene, Gibson said, "I wanted it in. My brother said I was wimping out if I didn't include it. But, man, if I included that in there, they'd be coming after me at my house. They'd come to kill me."[56] In another interview when asked about the scene, he said, "It's one little passage, and I believe it, but I don't and never have believed it refers to Jews, and implicates them in any sort of curse.
It's directed at all of us, all men who were there, and all that came after. His blood is on us, and that's what Jesus wanted.
But I finally had to admit that one of the reasons I felt strongly about keeping it, aside from the fact it's true, is that I didn't want to let someone else dictate what could or couldn't be said."[57]
In the New Republic, Leon Wieseltier said: "In its representation of its Jewish characters, The Passion of the Christ is without any doubt an anti-Semitic movie, and anybody who says otherwise knows nothing, or chooses to know nothing, about the visual history of anti-Semitism, in art and in film.
What is so shocking about Gibson's Jews is how unreconstructed they are in their stereotypical appearances and actions. These are not merely anti-Semitic images; these are classically anti-Semitic images." [58]
Asked by Bill O'Reilly if his movie would "upset Jews," Gibson responded, "It's not meant to. I think it's meant to just tell the truth. I want to be as truthful as possible."[59] In a Globe and Mail newspaper interview, he added, "If anyone has distorted Gospel passages to rationalize cruelty towards Jews or anyone, it's in defiance of repeated Papal condemnation.
The Papacy has condemned racism in any form... Jesus died for the sins of all times, and I'll be the first on the line for culpability".[60]
Movie reviewer Cal Thomas also tried to dispel the allegations of anti-Semitism, saying "To those in the Jewish community who worry that the film, which is scheduled for release next Easter season, might contain anti-Semitic elements, or encourage people to persecute Jews, fear not. The film does not indict Jews for the death of Jesus."[61]
Two Orthodox Jews, Rabbi Daniel Lapin and Michael Medved also vocally rejected claims that the film is anti-Semitic. They have noted the film's many sympathetic portrayals of Jews: Simon of Cyrene (who helps Jesus carry the cross), Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, St. Peter, St. John and Veronica (who wipes Jesus' face and offers him water).
Moreover, Senior Vatican officer Darío Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos, who has seen the film, addressed the matter so:
Anti-Semitism, like all forms of racism, distorts the truth in order to put a whole race of people in a bad light.
This film does nothing of the sort. It draws out from the historical objectivity of the Gospel narratives sentiments of forgiveness, mercy, and reconciliation. It captures the subtleties and the horror of sin, as well as the gentle power of love and forgiveness, without making or insinuating blanket condemnations against one group.
This film expressed the exact opposite, that learning from the example of Christ, there should never be any more violence against any other human being.[62]
Criticism of excessive violence
Certain critics were troubled by the film's explicitly-detailed violence, and especially cautioned parents to avoid taking their children to the cinema.
Although only one sentence in three of the Gospels mentions Jesus's flogging, and it is unmentioned in the fourth, The Passion of the Christ devotes ten minutes to the portrayal of the flogging. Film critic Roger Ebert, who rated the movie four-out-of-four stars, said in his review:
The movie is 126 minutes long, and I would guess that at least 100 of those minutes, maybe more, are concerned specifically and graphically with the details of the torture and death of Jesus.
This is the most violent film I have ever seen.
Ebert also mentioned that the R-rated film merits the MPAA NC-17 rating in a "Movie Answer Man" response, adding that no level-minded parent should ever allow children to see it.[63]
A.O. Scott, in The New York Times, said, The Passion of the Christ is so relentlessly focused on the savagery of Jesus' final hours that this film seems to arise less from love than from wrath, and to succeed more in assaulting the spirit than in uplifting it."[64]
David Edelstein, Slate's film critic, dubbed the film "a two-hour-and-six-minute snuff movie — The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre — that thinks it's an act of faith", and further criticised Gibson for focusing on the brutality of Jesus' execution, instead of his religious teachings.[65]
During Diane Sawyer's interview of him, Gibson said:
I wanted it to be shocking; and I wanted it to be extreme ... So that they see the enormity — the enormity of that sacrifice; to see that someone could endure that and still come back with love and forgiveness, even through extreme pain and suffering and ridicule. The actual crucifixion was more violent than what was shown on the film, but I thought no one would get anything out of it.
Response from Evangelicals
The Passion of the Christ received support and endorsement from most national known evangelical leaders and representatives of fundamentalist church organizations: Billy Graham, James Dobson, Mission America Coalition, Salvation Army, Promise Keepers, National Association of Evangelicals, Campus Crusade, Focus on the Family, Pat Robertson, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Trinity Broadcasting Network, Rick Warren, Southern Baptist Convention, Dr. Jerry Falwell, Max Lucado, Young Life, Tim LaHaye, Chuck Colson, Lee Strobel, Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Mothers of Pre-Schooler (MOPS.).[66]
Some Fundamentalist Protestant Christians criticised small sections of the film for their Catholic and ecumenical overtones, especially the addition of noncanonical scenes of Jesus with his mother (which they say encourages Mariolatry).[67]
