Police Constable Thomas King of the Inverness-shire Constabulary, stationed at Nethybridge, was killed in the line of duty by a shotgun while within a cottage at Tulloch, Nethybridge on 20th December 1898. He was endeavouring to effect the arrest of one Allan MacCallum on a Court Warrant, and MacCallum was subsequently convicted of killing PC King (but Culpable Homicide instead of Murder)
In the history of the area now policed by Northern Constabulary only two officers died from injuries deliberately inflicted - PC KIng and PC James Fraser (20 years earlier and in the adjacent County of Elginshire).

Both men are buried in the same graveyard, of Abernethy Parish Church - midway between Grantown and Nethybridge - their graves merely yards apart - and yet (until additional lettering was added to PC Kings gravestone on the centenary of his death) there was nothing to show that either officer had been killed in the line of duty).

"Witch World"[1963] by Andre Norton [1912-2005] is an alternate worlds/fantasy adventure novel that I found to be an unexpectedly delightful reading experience. I had this book on my shelf for many years but was put off by the title and general concept of "witchcraft". I must ruefully admit this books was not only hard to put down but it also reconfirmed that Ms. Norton was a masterful writer of both science-fiction and fantasy. This is one of the key books in the Norton canon and a classic of fantasy literature.
Hunted soldier Simon Tregarth is grudgingly teleported to an alternate earth-like planet. In the country of Estcarp Simon is recognized as an "outsider' but nonetheless is accepted for his martial arts proficiencies and becomes a leader in the local Home Guard. Some of the women in Estcarp have magical skills and become leaders. They are highly respected and referred too as witches. These women retain their skills so long as they remain chaste. Simon Tregarth, much to the consternation of his new companions, exhibits magical skills - a talent men in Estcarp do not possess.
Simon soon discovers Estcarp is a warring feudal society with some unaccounted for mechanical devices. Other strongholds in the area are in a low simmering state of conflict with Escarp - Alizon to the north and Karstan to the south. Allies with Escarp are the maritime traders the Sulcarp and the Hawk keepers. The island keep Gorm having been overrun by the unknown Kolder and is now an impenetrable mystery even to the witches of Estcap. Koris a member of the Gorm nobility, escaped and is now Capitan of the Escarp Home Guard.
Reading this book recently I was jolted that after all the recent glut of related fantasy title flooding the bookstore shelves this 56 year old title was redolent of captivating situations, engaging characters and unparalleled action sequences.
Norton's well drawn characters, imaginative action sequences and hints of unrevealed lore and mystery makes this a highly recommended to all readers who enjoy fantasy.

Where boys are also present, they are usually shown wearing very baggy trousers and smoking a pipe, which would certainly not be allowed today.
Volendam
Volendam is a small town in North Holland in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Edam-Volendam. The town has about 22,000 inhabitants (November 2007), and is twinned with Coventry in the UK.
Originally, Volendam was the location of the harbour of the nearby Edam. However in 1357, the inhabitants of Edam dug a shorter canal to the Zuiderzee with its own separate harbour.
This removed the need for Volendam's original harbour, which was then dammed and used for land reclamation. Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Volendam, which literally meant 'Filled dam'.
In the early part of the 20th. century Volendam became an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time there.
The majority of the population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church, which is deeply connected to the village culture. Historically, many missionaries and bishops grew up in Volendam. Today there is the chapel of Our Lady of the Water, which is located in a village park.
The Volendam Café Fire
The Volendam New Year's café fire occurred during the 2000–2001 New Year's night. The fire began early on New Year's Day 2001 and caused the death of 14 young people. 241 people were admitted to hospital, 200 of whom suffered serious burns.
The fire took place in a building that housed three bars. On New Year's Eve it was packed with more than 350 young people between 13 and 22 years of age when a short blaze happened in the café De Hemel ("Heaven") which was located on the top floor after a sparkler hit Christmas decorations that hung from the ceiling. The temperature in the room reached 400 °C (752 °F). Many of the partygoers were wearing highly flammable synthetic fabrics which clung to their flesh as they melted and burned.
There was great panic and the heat, lack of oxygen and people falling over each other made escaping extremely difficult. There also were bars in front of the windows and there were too few emergency exits, all of which contributed to the high number of injuries.
Survivors stated that shortly after the fire began, all the lights went out, contributing to the panic.
The first report reached the Amsterdam ambulance service at 00:38 local time on the 1st. January. The first fire engine arrived at 00:46.
Mayor Frank IJsselmuiden claimed that the crowd had panicked because all but one of the emergency exits were blocked.
Many of those injured were hurt when they smashed windows and leapt from third and second floor windows in an attempt to escape the fire. Others including 53 injured individuals were admitted due to burns, with some being flown to special burns units in Belgium and Germany.
Investigation Into the Fire
The fire was initially investigated intensively by media and politicians. New rules were introduced for decorations in cafés, nightclubs and other venues. The owner and managers of the building were indicted for culpability.
An inquiry showed that the owner Jan Veerman had been negligent in providing escape routes, as well as failing to soak the Christmas decorations with a fire-resistant substance. Also there were too many people in the building at the time of the incident.
The owner was given a conditional prison sentence and community service. As a result of the inquiry Mayor of Edam-Volendam Frank IJsselmuiden and alderman Wim Visscher resigned their positions.
Tourism in Volendam
Volendam is a popular tourist destination. It is well-known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents.
The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters (although there are believed to be fewer than 50 women now wearing the costume as part of their daily lives, most of them elderly).
There is a regular ferry connection to Marken, a peninsula close by.
Volendam also features a small museum about its history and clothing style, and visitors can have their pictures taken in traditional Dutch costumes.
Volendam on Film
Volendam was a shooting location in Vikas Bahl's 2014 Bollywood film, Queen. The actors established an Indian food shop called Rani's Gol Gappa.
The owner was an Italian, Marco Canadea, as Marcello. The role of Queen was played by Indian actress Kangana Ranaut.
The film follows the story of Rani Mehra, a diffident Punjabi girl from New Delhi who embarks on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam by herself after her fiancé calls off their wedding.
Queen is cited as a ground-breaking and an influential feminist film by many scholars. Over the years, the film has built a strong cult following. It was named as one of the best films of the decade (2010's) by multiple publications such as Paste and Film Companion.
Several publications such as O, The Oprah Magazine, and Cosmopolitan have named it as one of the best films of Indian Cinema. Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express named Queen as one of the 75 finest and most iconic films made in India in the last 70 years.

The popular music groups 3JS and Nick & Simon are famously from Volendam; their members have all participated in local musical performances through the years.

The Royal Hotel was at 65 Hindley Street. Established in 1847 it ceased trading in 1921. The hotel was the Hains Hunkin Ltd building on the left. The building has been demolished.

MR. ROBERTSON NOT GUILTY.
Percy James Robertson (48), a Returned soldier, was charged in the Criminal Court, before Mr. Justice Gordon and jury, on Friday, with the manslaughter of Frederick William Gebhardt (45), in a lane at the rear of the Royal Hotel, Hindley street, on September 17. Mr. H. A. Shierlaw (Crown Prosecutor) prosecuted, and Sir Josiah Symon, K.C., with Captain A. S Blackburn, V.C., M.P., appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty.
Mr. Shierlaw in opening the case, said the accused and Miss Heffron were in the kitchen of the Royal Hotel on September 17. At 6.45 p.m. Gebhardt came in, and Miss Heffron said, as she had often said to him before, "Hurry up. Fred, and get out." Gebhardt replied, I'll get out, or you will get your bludger to put me out." The accused was the only other man in the room at the time. Shortly afterwards Gebhardt said, "Trot your -- bludger outside." Robertson had no boots or coat on, but he went out, and there was a fight. After they had been struggling for a time the accused said, "Let us shake hands. Fred." They shook hands, but afterwards Gebhardt struck the accused again, and then fell on his knees. He got up, and Robertson struck him. Gebhardt fell to the ground, striking his head on some stones. When picked up Gebhardt was bleeding freely from the back of the head. He was taken to the hospital, where he died at 2 a.m. Gebhardt was slighty under the influence of drink. It was the fall that killed the deceased, not the blow. The jury would have to decide the culpability of the accused.
Dr. Cowan, resident medical officer, Adelaide Hospital, said he treated Gebhardt at the hospital from 7.50 p.m. until he died. Death was due to fracture of the skull, and injuries to the brain, which might have been caused by a fall or blow. The impact would probably have been at the back of the head.
Mrs. Edwards, licensee of the Royal Hotel, said Gebhardt was a much heavier man than the accused, and when he had had a little drink, was very quarrelsome and inclined to fight everybody. His wife left him four years ago, because of his violence. Robertson was a very quiet man. Gebhardt had been in a bad humor all that afternoon. Up to that time of the struggle the accused and Gebhardt were on the best of terms and she knew of nothing Robertson had done to provoke the deceased.
Alice Heffron, employed at the Royal Hotel, gave evidence in accord with Mr. Shierlaw's opening. The remarks made by Gebhardt greatly distressed her, for it was a gross insult to both Robertson and herself.
Broadford Mcinnes, barman at the hotel, in detailing the conversation which occurred prior to the fight, said the accused told Gebhardt that his remark was not a nice one to make to a lady. The two men "boxed on," Robertson trying to get out of it and Gebhardt following him up all the time. When Robertson said, ''Let's shake hands, Fred," the struggle stopped. Robertson walked back towards the kitchen, Gebhardt renewed the fight, and Robertson then hit or pushed Gebhardt on the chest. All through the accused bad endeavored to get out of the struggle.
His Honor - Can you make anything out of this. Mr. Shierlaw? Mr. Shierlaw-I have from the beginning put the case very temperately.
His Honor-It is quite.clear on the evidence that Gebhardt was the aggressor and that Robertson did not want to fight.
Mr. Shierlaw-I believe that is so, your Honor, and I'm happy to be able to say that I do not wish to proceed further with the case.
The jury, without leaving the box, re turned a verdict of not guilty.
His Honor, in discharging the accused, said:- Mr. Robertson is discharged, I think I can say, without any reflection or stain upon his character. It was a most unfortunate incident, which, I am sure no one regrets more than Mr. Robertson himself.
Sir Josiah Symon said that was so.
His Honor hoped that the remarks which had been made would console Mr.Robertson and his friends in their trouble."

Rosa María Payá: "This is not about hope"
The young activist seeks a review of the case about the
death of her father
HAVANA, Cuba.- "This is not about hope," says Rosa María Paya to CubaNet when we asked her about the review of the cause of culpable homicide for which Spanish politician Angel Carromero was tried. The process took place after the accident, which occurred in dubious circumstances, in which Oswaldo Payá and activist Harold Cepero were killed.
In Cuba there are three powers through which criminal investigations can be reopened: the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Court and the General Prosecutor's Office, and Rosa María Payá has all gone to them.
"We appeal to the Minister of Justice with a copy to the President of the Supreme Court and the Attorney General. The only thing, last, maximum, that we can do, is to present to this instance the review of sentence and that was what I did in the morning of today (Monday) in the Ministry of Justice, in the General Prosecutor's Office and now in the Court Provincial. It is a revision because supposedly in Cuba that is a case tried and closed, "says Rosa María.
According to the activist, this Monday was "just delivery", and explains: "Do not interview with another official who is not the one who receives the documents because they must be analyzed by a prosecutor or the minister, according to each institution."
Rosa María Paya is a victim and in Cuba the victims are not part of the criminal process, and if you are not part of the process there is no way to access the evidence.
Remember how it all happened four years ago: "To begin with, it was a trial that took place in the province of Granma (...) They did not let us in."
"The family today does not even have the autopsy report of my father or Harold Cepero. That is, there are many violations of international law, of law, and even, as in the case we are requesting, violations of Cuban law because they did not investigate the order, did not investigate a fundamental test, which was requested by the accused. "
Another characteristic of Cuban criminal investigations is that the only authorized body to carry them out is the Ministry of the Interior. The lawyer has two unique possibilities to request that evidence be carried out to prove the innocence of his client: the case manager and the prosecutor at first, and the court when the file is presented. In both cases, the Ministry of the Interior still has the right to accept or not the lawyer's proposal. If the request is accepted, the authorized ones only have access to a report made by the official experts.
However, Rosa María does not have the right to access the evidence she asks for, but she has the right to request a review of the case in which her father was one of the direct victims. She is convinced that "that trial did not comply with the requirements of due process."
"One of the causes for requesting the review of a sentence is that not all the possible tests have been carried out or that a request has been made for a test and has not been carried out. And this is one of the requirements that did not meet in the case of Angel Carromero, who said very clearly that another car had rammed them from behind and the expert test was never carried out. In fact in the trial never spoke of that, the trial never spoke of the allegation that had made Angel saying that another car had hit them from behind and therefore that test was not practiced on the car, "he argues his reasons.
Faced with the assumption that the Ministry of Justice decided to review the case of Carromero, Rosa Maria said, although the legal action is not "hopes": "It should be done, because the cause is more than documented. Legally, what they should do is reopen the case and do the expert test. It's as simple as that. The car that was hit needs to be analyzed. And that is what we are waiting for. That they review the car and that they make the examination of the defense of the rear bumper of the car that was the rammed by the car of the Security of the State. We also want to have access to that expert information that was denied to Angel Carromero's lawyers as much as to us. "
To conclude, he adds: "This is about there being enough causes to review the case as there were plenty of them 4 years ago and 7 months ago and they did not do them. It is a requirement that must be met in international courts, that all the mechanisms of the law in the Cuban nation be exhausted, although in this case, as law and practice violate the law, there are other considerations. Anyway, the justice minister has to respond within 60 days. "

The CubaDecide initiative has announced that this February 28, when it is 65 years since the birth of Oswaldo Payá, at 9:00 am a commemorative plaque was unveiled to the opposition Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas.
"The marble plaque will remain placed on the facade of what was his house, where he lived with his family, at the time of his death," said the note sent to the media.
Oswaldo Payá, leader of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL), died in strange circumstances in an alleged car accident that occurred on July 22, 2012; a fact that his family and the MCL have denounced as a murder at the hands of the State Security of the Government of the island.
Payá, creator of the Varela Project, was the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Human Rights of the European Parliament in 2002 and candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, 2010, 2008, 2003 and 2002. He was honorary vice-president of the Central Democratic International.
Payá was raised in a Catholic family. He studied Physics and later Telecommunications Engineering. Until the moment of his death, he worked in the provincial electromedicine workshop. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Governor offers Orwellian spin
Sarah Palin's reaction to the Legislature's Troopergate report is an embarrassment to Alaskans and the nation.
She claims the report "vindicates" her. She said that the investigation found "no unlawful or unethical activity on my part."
Her response is either astoundingly ignorant or downright Orwellian.
Page 8, Finding Number One of the report says: "I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."
In plain English, she did something "unlawful." She broke the state ethics law.
Perhaps Gov. Palin has been too busy to actually read the Troopergate report. Perhaps she is relying on briefings from McCain campaign spinmeisters
Because if she had actually read it, she couldn't claim "vindication" with a straight face.
Palin asserted that the report found "there was no abuse of authority at all in trying to get Officer Wooten fired."
In fact, the report concluded that "impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda, to wit: to get Trooper Michael Wooten fired."
Palin's response is the kind of political "big lie" that George Orwell warned against. War is peace. Black is white. Up is down.
Gov. Palin and her camp trumpeted the report's second finding: that she was within her legal authority to fire Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. But the report also said it's likely one of the reasons she fired him was his failure to get rid of her ex-brother-in-law trooper.
That's not "vindication," and surely Gov. Palin knows it.
Gov. Palin and her husband felt so passionately about Wooten because the case was so personal to them. Their passion blinded them to any other considerations. They had no sense that the power of the governor's office carries a special responsibility not to use it to settle family scores. They had no sense that legal restrictions might prevent the troopers from firing Wooten. They had no sense that persistent queries from the governor's office might be perceived as pressure to bend state personnel laws.
Gov. Palin and her husband were obsessed with Wooten the way Capt. Ahab was obsessed with the Great White Whale. No Wooten, no peace.
It wasn't appropriate, especially for someone elected as an ethical reformer. And her Orwellian claims of "vindication" make this blemish on her record look even worse.
Bottom line: Gov. Palin, read the report. It says you violated the ethics law.

LIARS AND LAWBREAKERS
It was surely an odd bit of timing on Monday, November 4--just the day before one of the biggest presidential elections in American history--that the Alaska State Personnel Board issued a finding by its chief investigator, Timothy J. Petumenos, that Republican vice-presidential candidate and Alaska governor, Sarah Palin, did not breach state ethics laws when she fired Alaska public safety commissioner Walt Monegan in July of this year. This last minute finding appeared to exonerate Palin of any legal culpability in the so-called "Troopergate" scandal that dogged her throughout her ill-fated, two-month run on the Republican ticket. Palin boldly claimed it a "vindication," while headlines throughout the world declared that she had been "cleared" of any wrongdoing.
That was hardly the case. Composed entirely of political appointees--and all Republican--the Personnel Board was hell-bent on clearing Palin from the get-go. Its findings were neither final nor impartial. And they leave many questions about her behavior, along with that of her husband's and her staff's, unanswered.
Perhaps the most significant questions that remain are whether or not Governor Palin and her husband, Todd, committed perjury in their sworn affidavits to the personnel board. There is significant circumstantial evidence that they did.
Less than a month before the Personnel Board's findings, of course, a Republican investigator of the bipartisan Alaska Legislative Council declared that while Palin broke no laws in firing Monegan, she had, in fact, violated the state's Executive Ethics Act by actively pursuing the firing of her former brother-in-law, Alaska state trooper Mike Wooten.
. . . In the aftermath of Mengan's dismissal, Palin gave at least four different reasons for it--all of which seem spurious, at best, and concocted, at worst. And there is strong evidence contradicting every one of her four explanations.
But even more troubling is the absolutely obsessive pattern of strong-arming Monegan about Wooten that began immediately once Palin took office. Within two months of her December 2006 inauguration, Palin and her husband, Todd, contacted Monegan a half-dozen times about firing Wooten. Then Palin's staff members began the assault. Then more contacts from the Palins. Then more from staff. The pressure was unrelenting and continued right up until the time that Monegan was fired. The record on that--emails, notes, even taped phone conversations--is quite clear.
Perhaps the most troubling piece of evidence is a February 7, 2007, email from Gov. Palin to Monegan. It's a long, rambling missive that concludes with a return to her obsession with Wooten: "Just my opinion -- I know you know I've experienced a lot of frustration with this issue. I know Todd's even expressed to you a lot of concern about our family's safety after this trooper threatened to kill a family member..."
Both Palin and her husband swore under oath that they did not have conversations with Monegan a month earlier (in January 2007) about the Wooten matter. Yet the February 2007 email proves concretely that Palin was aware that her husband had conveyed concerns to Monegan and, by implication ("I know you know") that she had as well. It also clearly establishes the pattern of her trying to use her influence to get Wooten fired from her earliest days in office. Palin further contradicted her own testimony by saying that her husband complained to her so frequently about the handling of the Wooten matter that she had to tell him to stop, and then shortly thereafter contended that she knew nothing about his activities to get Wooten fired.
. . . The Alaska Legislature has the right--and I believe the obligation--to follow-up on the findings of its own investigation and to censure Governor Palin for what was a clear pattern of abusing her power.
Moreover, the Legislature also has the power to seek contempt charges against Palin and other state officials who willingly ignored the Legislative Council's subpoenas during its investigation of Troopergate.
And it also has the power to hold hearings on whether or not Palin and her husband committed perjury. There's troubling evidence that they did.
Come January, someone needs to show Alaska's first family that they are not above the law.

Eye in the Sky - Philip K. Dick - reviewed 12-20-2009
I have read many of Dick's novels and can say with some confidence that this is not the one I would recommend to new readers. It contains narrative themes that I find engaging and challenging but also exhibits Dick's tendency to wander into muddled plot entanglements that could put you into a coma.
The story has our obsessed protagonist Jack Hamilton fired from a California defense research lab because of a suspicion that his wife is a Red. Soon after he is on a tour to witness the first test of a "Proton Beam Deflector" and, well, something goes dreadfully wrong - welcome to alternate universes and a creepy vision of God's eye.
1950's McCarthy-era paranoia is believable especially if you spouse is working in defense, but giving tours of an experimental radiation accelerator during first turn-on is just a characteristically implausible Dick plot contrivance.
The authors descriptions of the God encounters in this novel are hilarious and sometimes very, very weird. It is a theme explored in greater depth in several of his later works. As only Dick could tell us: "Nobert Wiener," Tillingford said. "You recall his works in cybernetics. And even more important, Enrico Destini's work in the field of theophonics." What's that Hamilton asked?" Tillingford raised an eyebrow...Communications between man and God, of course...Destini was able to set up the really adequate system of communication between earth and heaven in 1946." Later a brilliant passage has Hamilton praying to God for his $400 pay and bucket of change rains down upon him. Seems God pay off in coin not currency. This event occurs soon after Hamilton and a friend ascended to heaven on a holy umbrella only to find a gigantic eye.

Several Americans prisoners of war who refused to return to the United States hang a “Down with McCarthyism” sign on a truck January 28, 1954 as they prepare to leave the demilitarized zone in Korea and head into North Korea.

As the Red Scare of the late 1940s and 1950s continued in the United States, the prisoners who refused repatriation were labeled as “brainwashed” and fear of communists’ ability to shape people’s minds was spread across the country.
However some were African Americans who did not wish to return to face racial discrimination. Others agreed with their hosts that communism represented a better hope for mankind than the capitalism of the United States.
Most, though ultimately had difficulty adapting to the culture and language of the host country and eventually returned to the United States.
Prisoner repatriation was one of the greatest stumbling blocks in the long cease-fire negotiations between the forces of the United Nations and those of China and North Korea.
In June 1953, the two sides agreed that no prisoner who did not wish to be repatriated would be forced to do so (this had long been a sticking point in negotiations, with the Chinese and North Koreans wanting all prisoners returned to their home countries).
Prisoners who did not wish to go back to their home countries would be given 90 days in a neutral compound near Panmunjom to reconsider before being allowed to stay in enemy territory. Following the armistice that was signed on 27 July 1953, effectively ending the Korean War (South Korea never signed), the main prisoner exchange was free to proceed.
One British and 23 American soldiers (along with 327 South Koreans) refused to be returned to their homelands. Two, Corporal Claude Batchelor and Corporal Edward Dickenson, changed their minds before the 90-day window expired. Both were court-martialed and sentenced to prison terms, with Batchelor serving 4½ years and Dickenson 3½.
This left 22 U.N. soldiers who voluntarily stayed with the Communists after the final exchange of prisoners. The 21 Americans were given dishonorable discharges.
This had the unintended consequence of rendering them immune to court-martial when they finally returned to the United States (which the majority eventually did), because they were no longer active-duty military. However, they were still criminally culpable for any acts of collaboration or offenses against fellow prisoners committed while they were POWs.
About 4 a.m. on February 24, 1954, a train carrying the 21 American defectors rumbled across the Yalu River into China. The Chinese soon shipped some of the men off to study language and politics. Others went to mills, factories, and farms across Eastern China.

Like many others, I've been in the grip of a particular TV series for years now, which arrived at its climax this past Sunday. Not wanting to face the finale of "Breaking Bad" alone, I headed to the Cadillac Lounge. As it happened, I ended up watching it on a small TV screen above the bar, as their "big screen" was peppered with dead pixels, much as if someone had sneezed cocaine over it.. The place was dead quiet but we nevertheless strained to catch the dialogue. Anticipating the problem, I had asked the barman to put on my TV's subtitles.
It went down largely as I'd anticipated and hoped. I wanted Jesse to survive. Skyler and family as well. Walter was destined to die one way or another, and I was fine with it. I predict my son won't share this view as he was routing for Walter White, despised Jesse's "weakness' and like many viewers out there, wished all kinds of ill on Skyler the "bitch" wife, who inevitably saw through Walt's deceptions and demanded accountability. In the scene in this image, Marie's phoned Skyler to warn her that Walt's been sighted in the vicinity. From this, we can anticipate that the 2 sisters will eventually reconcile. As she hangs up and the camera pans, we realize he is already present in the room. Skyler greets the visit with skepticism and mixed emotions. Her family's safety has been threatened by drug dealers and DEA alike. She's endured so many lies and deception from Walt in the past, and been drawn in far too deeply. If Walt's skill and passion was chemistry, hers was accounting, which she took to with growing enthusiasm when he required her specific talent to "launder" the drug money. Walt had tried to deflect all culpability towards himself in a previous phone call (and episode) to Skyler. Made in full expectation that the DEA were listening in, he had established her as an unwitting, unwilling victim of his alter ego, the monstrous, murderous tyrant and drug lord, Heisenberg. Shady lawyer Saul had advised Walt to hand himself in rather than going on the lam, as he knew the DEA would continue to look towards Skyler if they couldn't get their hands on either him, the missing DEA members or the drug money. Walt however still has an agenda, and it doesn't include jail. Uncle Jack and the Aryan brotherhood had ignored Walt's pleas to spare Hank's life, even after Walt had revealed that the GPA coordinates to the site in the desert also led to his money, all of which he offered up in exchange. The neo-nazis nevertheless executed his brother in law and DEA partner, AND stole the bulk of his stashed drug money, leaving Walt one remaining barrel of cash and an uncomfortable handshake, in return for sparing his life and to establish complicity in the murders. He intended to get it back, "for the family" of course, as “Then and only then am I through.”
In that scene, Walt had then spotted Jesse cowering under the car following the DEA shoot-out and betrayed him to the Brotherhood, saying he was owed his death. Did he anticipate they would spare it and rather enslave him to produce blue meth? It seems unlikely. I wonder why he chose that moment to reveal to Jesse that he had been instrumental in the overdose death of his girlfriend, Jane. It was a blow intended to demoralize Jesse further, but for what purpose? Revenge for ratting to the DEA, or did he also personally blame him for the death of Hank, as Jesse (with the DEA) had lured Walt to his desert stash by suggesting he had found it and was in the process of burning his money. In a frantic fury, Walt had been tricked into leading the DEA to the location, and thinking it only Jesse, had in turn sent for the Nazis to come rescue him. By the time he realized it included Hank, he had lost the power to change the course.
Now, in pursuit of his ultimate agenda, Walt has come to make his final good-byes, offer more excuses and provide his wife with yet another "Get out of Jail" card. He gives her a lotto ticket with numbers that now reveal the GPS coordinates to the desert grave of Hank and Gomez rather than the site of his drug money stash, for her to use as an additional bargaining chip with the DEA. He tells her who was responsible for their deaths, not including himself.
She stops Walt before he can offer up one last excuse for his transgressions.
“If I have to hear one more time that you did this for the family...” but on this occasion he surprises her, and likely himself, with the truth. “I did it for ME... I liked it. I was GOOD at it. I was alive.”
And that moment of revelation and honesty breathes new life into Skylar's character. Actress Anna Gunn, describing the scene during a discussion following the finale, said, “She was waiting so long... and became such a shell of a person." This released her, like a long awaited sigh. She allowed him to say farewell to baby Holly, and he watches his now estranged son enter the house, but from a distance. He has lost the love of his family, and they no longer need him.
For Walt too, the admission allows him to free himself for the final scene, where all obsessions, aspirations, hatreds and perhaps the only love he has remaining, culminate as temperature and ingredients fuse in a final cook.

Volendam is a small town in North Holland in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Edam-Volendam. The town has about 22,000 inhabitants (November 2007), and is twinned with Coventry in the UK.
Originally, Volendam was the location of the harbour of the nearby Edam. However in 1357, the inhabitants of Edam dug a shorter canal to the Zuiderzee with its own separate harbour.
This removed the need for Volendam's original harbour, which was then dammed and used for land reclamation. Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Volendam, which literally meant 'Filled dam'.
In the early part of the 20th. century Volendam became an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time there.
The majority of the population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church, which is deeply connected to the village culture. Historically, many missionaries and bishops grew up in Volendam. Today there is the chapel of Our Lady of the Water, which is located in a village park.
The Volendam Café Fire
The Volendam New Year's café fire occurred during the 2000–2001 New Year's night. The fire began early on New Year's Day 2001 and caused the death of 14 young people. 241 people were admitted to hospital, 200 of whom suffered serious burns.
The fire took place in a building that housed three bars. On New Year's Eve it was packed with more than 350 young people between 13 and 22 years of age when a short blaze happened in the café De Hemel ("Heaven") which was located on the top floor after a sparkler hit Christmas decorations that hung from the ceiling. The temperature in the room reached 400 °C (752 °F). Many of the partygoers were wearing highly flammable synthetic fabrics which clung to their flesh as they melted and burned.
There was great panic and the heat, lack of oxygen and people falling over each other made escaping extremely difficult. There also were bars in front of the windows and there were too few emergency exits, all of which contributed to the high number of injuries.
Survivors stated that shortly after the fire began, all the lights went out, contributing to the panic.
The first report reached the Amsterdam ambulance service at 00:38 local time on the 1st. January. The first fire engine arrived at 00:46.
Mayor Frank IJsselmuiden claimed that the crowd had panicked because all but one of the emergency exits were blocked.
Many of those injured were hurt when they smashed windows and leapt from third and second floor windows in an attempt to escape the fire. Others including 53 injured individuals were admitted due to burns, with some being flown to special burns units in Belgium and Germany.
Investigation Into the Fire
The fire was initially investigated intensively by media and politicians. New rules were introduced for decorations in cafés, nightclubs and other venues. The owner and managers of the building were indicted for culpability.
An inquiry showed that the owner Jan Veerman had been negligent in providing escape routes, as well as failing to soak the Christmas decorations with a fire-resistant substance. Also there were too many people in the building at the time of the incident.
The owner was given a conditional prison sentence and community service. As a result of the inquiry Mayor of Edam-Volendam Frank IJsselmuiden and alderman Wim Visscher resigned their positions.
Tourism in Volendam
Volendam is a popular tourist destination. It is well-known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents.
The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters (although there are believed to be fewer than 50 women now wearing the costume as part of their daily lives, most of them elderly).
There is a regular ferry connection to Marken, a peninsula close by.
Volendam also features a small museum about its history and clothing style, and visitors can have their pictures taken in traditional Dutch costumes.
Volendam on Film
Volendam was a shooting location in Vikas Bahl's 2014 Bollywood film, Queen. The actors established an Indian food shop called Rani's Gol Gappa.
The owner was an Italian, Marco Canadea, as Marcello. The role of Queen was played by Indian actress Kangana Ranaut.
The film follows the story of Rani Mehra, a diffident Punjabi girl from New Delhi who embarks on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam by herself after her fiancé calls off their wedding.
Queen is cited as a ground-breaking and an influential feminist film by many scholars. Over the years, the film has built a strong cult following. It was named as one of the best films of the decade (2010's) by multiple publications such as Paste and Film Companion.
Several publications such as O, The Oprah Magazine, and Cosmopolitan have named it as one of the best films of Indian Cinema. Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express named Queen as one of the 75 finest and most iconic films made in India in the last 70 years.
Music in Volendam
Volendam is well known for its distinctive music, which is called Palingsound (literally "Eel Sound") in reference to Volendam's status as fishing village.
During the 1960's, the local group The Cats was a very popular group in the Netherlands and abroad.
Another band from Volendam was BZN, which became popular in the late 1960's and early 1970's. In 1995 BZN performed a duet with the ten-year-old Jan Smit, who quickly became a celebrity in his own right.
The popular music groups 3JS and Nick & Simon are famously from Volendam; their members have all participated in local musical performances through the years.

JO TAMBÉ ESTAVA AL PARLAMENT... I HO TORNARIA A FER
El dia 31 de març comença el judici contra les 20 persones imputades per l’intent de bloqueig del Parlament del 15 de Juny del 2011. Aquell dia s'anaven a iniciar el tràmits per aprovar els pressupostos amb el primer paquet de retallades a Catalunya, que va propiciar el tancament d'empreses públiques, la privatització de la sanitat, les retallades al sector de la cultura, educació, etc.
La mobilització “Aturem el Parlament” va succeir dues setmanes després del brutal desallotjament de la Plaça Catalunya a mans dels antidisturbis dels Mossos d'Esquadra a les ordres del que era conseller d'Interior i ara ho és d'Empresa i Ocupació, Felip Puig. També responsable del dispositiu policial que va disparar contra l'ull d'Esther Quintana.
La criminalització per part de la premsa subvencionada pel Govern i l'escalada repressiva que va venir després (judicis contra persones que volien impedir un desnonament al Clot, nombroses detencions a les vagues generals, multes absurdes per les persones que es manifestaven o per enganxar cartells, etc), va ser i és encara, una resposta planejada per procurar frenar l'augment de la indignació i de la força de les protestes populars contra el poder polític, econòmic i altres injustícies quotidianes, com el patriarcat i el racisme.
Durant aquells dies, la gent es va organitzar arreu per construir política des del carrer, com moltes seguim fent. La política que volem és assembleària, horitzontal, autogestionada, sense representants, és del poble i per al poble, i xoca amb la política institucional que ens governa. La qual ha estat protagonista d'un espiral de corrupció i de tenir llaços, sovint familiars o personals, amb grans empreses privades que reben encàrrecs d'obres públiques i amb els peixos grossos del poder financer.
Aquell dia érem milers de persones les que vam anar a intentar aturar el Parlament, per combatre el drama de tantes vides immerses en la misèria, els acomiadaments per les retallades, els suïcidis pels desnonaments, etc. Perquè moltes d'aquestes barbàries s'aproven dins dels murs d'aquest edifici. Per aquest motiu estàvem assenyalant els culpables el 15 de Juny de 2011 i per això mateix, ho tornaríem a fer sense por, perquè legitimem la nostra actuació, i perquè si la gent del carrer, a qui ens afecta tot això, no lluitem, ningú altre ho farà per nosaltres.
Sabem i tenim clar que aquest és un judici polític, una farsa per atemorir a aquelles que decideixen plantar cara i actuar contra els responsables de tanta precarietat. De fet, ens reafirmem al comprovar que l'acció directa contra els poderosos i generar alternatives de vida els molesta, i molt. Per això, i perquè som conscients del poder que podem tenir quan ens organitzem, no ens volem doblegar davant les seves intimidacions i fem una crida a estendre la solidaritat a aquells i aquelles que pateixen la repressió i la violència quotidiana d'aquest sistema econòmic, en les seves infinitats de formes.
Convoquem manifestació el dia 29 de març a Barcelona a les 18:30 a Plaça Catalunya.

I was at the Catalan Parliament too…
and I would do it again
On March 31st the court case against the 20 people who are charged with an attempt to block the Catalan Paliament on June 15th 2012 will begin. That day in June, the process of implementing the first round of budget cuts in Catalonia began. Cuts that involved closing public companies, the privatization of health care,as well as cuts in the area of culture, education, etc.
The mobilization “Aturem el Parlament” (“Paralize the Parliament”), took place two weeks after the brutal eviction of Plaza Catalunya (Barcelona), by the riot police Mossos d´Esquadra under the command of Felip Puig. He was the minister of the Interior at that time and is currently the minister of companies and labour. He was also responsible for the police operation that shot Esther Quintana in the eye.
The criminalization by the media (that is funded by the state) and the increase of repression which followed (court cases against people trying to prevent an eviction in the neighbourhood of el Clot, many detentions during the general strikes, absurd fees for people protesting or hanging banners with tape etc), was, and still is, a planned response to try to stop the rise of outrage and the strength of popular demostrations against economic and political power, and other daily injustices (such as patriarchy and racism).
During those days, people organized themselves all over to build and create politics from the streets, as many of us continue to do. The politics we want are based in assemblies, horizontal, self-organized, without leaders; they belong to the people and they are for the people, and clash with the institutional politics which govern us. The same institutional politics and their protagonists are creating a corruption spiral and have relationships, mostly family-based, with private companies (that receive contracts for public constructions) and with high-up people with economic power.
That day we were thousands of people trying to paralyze the Catalan Parliament in order to fight the drama of so many lives embedded in misery, the layoffs due to the cuts, the suicides due to evictions, etc. Because many of these atrocities are approved behind the walls of that building. This is the reason that we were pointing out the guilty ones that 25 of June 2012, and because of this, we would to it again without fear. Because we legitimize our action, and because if we, the people from the street -whom are the most affected-, don´t fight, nobody will do it for us.
We know that this is a political court case, a farce to scare those who decide to stand up and take action against thoseresponsibleforall this precariousness. In fact, we reaffirm our ideals and actions after proving that direct action and the creation of alternatives of life bothers them, a lot. Because of this, and because we are aware of the power we can have when we are organized, we don´t want to bow down to their intimidation. We call for a spread of solidarity for all the ones who suffer daily repression and violence within this economic system, in its infinite shapes.
SOLIDARITY WITH ALL THE REPRESSED AND THOSE WHO FIGHT!!
The next time that they take an helicopter, it should be to go far away, and not come back to bother us.

Repression in Spain. A call for international solidarity
During the last three years Spanish society has witnessed a period of intense social protests against austerity, corruption, unemployment and so on. As in other times in history, the greater and more radicalised the protest the bigger the repression that the state organises against it. Since the general strike in September 2010, a common trend of this repression strategy is been a kind of ‘laissez faire’ in the streets but followed by ´selective´ detentions months later. Police have been literally knocking doors down of those who continuously take part in different actions and demonstrations, and consequently dozens of people have been arrested.
On June the 15th 2011, ten thousand people surrounded the Catalan parliament in Barcelona. That day the government wanted to approve a vast austerity cut in health and education, and the idea was to block politicians from getting into the building. “Inexplicably” the police did not protect some politicians, which caused direct confrontation with protesters, and of course that fact was used by the media as an example of violence against democracy. After that, people were violently dispersed, and the MPs could do their job.
On October the 4th 2011, 22 people were arrested in their homes. They have been accused of a crime against the state, using a law designed for coup leaders and that had never been used before in Spain. They now face a penalty of up to 8 years in jail, whereas some of them have been also accused of different crimes related to other demonstrations. The trial will start in March the 31st 2014 and it is expected to last four days.
There will be a national day of solidarity in Spain on March the 29th with demonstrations in several cities. So we also call for international solidarity.
You can call, email or block different Spanish embassies or institutions. Or you can do whatever you consider appropriate…

The Postcard
A postally unused briefkaart bearing no publisher's name. The card has a divided back which has been hand-stamped with the word 'Drukwerk'. This means 'Printed Matter'.
There are many postcards showing Dutch women and girls on this photostream, and they are almost invariably shown knitting.
Where boys are also present, they are usually shown wearing very baggy trousers and smoking a pipe, which would certainly not be allowed today.

Inside the Union Carbide pesticide factory scene of the world's worst industrial disaster.
Interior shot of the factory before it was stripped of some of its most valuable components and subsequently abandoned to the elements.
The factory remains ruined and abandoned to this day and there are approximately 350 Metric tonnes of highly toxic waste stored above ground.
Of greater concern are the many thousands of tonnes of toxic waste that were buried, in an untreated state, on the site.
Rain water runs through his waste, along with the remains of the abandoned solar evaporation ponds, and leaches toxic chemicals in to the local ground water aquifer.
The toxic plume has now spread for miles from the factory and many thousands of impoverished people have been using it, for decades, as their primary water supply.

Speaking Vic: "The time" Ragle said, "is out of joint - I think we should compare notes" from Time Out Of Joint
"Time Out of Joint", first published in 1959, is not one of his PKD's better known or critically acclaimed novels. Nonetheless it is a story I greatly admire. It concerns a man, Ragle Gumm, who makes his living by consistently correctly solving a newspaper puzzle contest: "Where Will the Little Green Man be Next?"
At first this odd story appears quite mundane. Set against the background of small town suburbia life in the 1950's - nothing appears to out of the ordinary. Ragle Gumm's brother-in-law is a grocer, his young nephew gets into minor schoolboy mischief, he plays cards in the evening and there is an undercurrent of infidelity with the neighbor's wife. Slowly like a cat creeping across the lawn on a moonless night the weirdness starts to set in. Someone looks for a pull cord for a bathroom light they swore was always there and finds a wall switch. Small slips of paper with item names are found under or near where the item previously was thought to be located. Televisions are found in homes but no radios.
A modestly paced story that engaged this reader as the plot unfolds but, unfortunately, marred by an ending that seem forced and out of place. It is my oppinion that the more you know about PKD the better you can appreciate this story.
Additional comments August 2012
I re-read this novel recently and it occurred to me that part of its charm is the "period" the story is set in. Dick wrote it in 1957-8 and peppers his story with references to then popular culture and politics. The seemingly abrupt "science-fiction" endings becomes more credible upon another reading.
A strange and intriguing book worth another read if you're so inclined.

Saint-Malo
Saint-Malo is a historic walled port city and commune in Brittany on the English Channel coastline of northwestern France.
Saint-Malo in World War II
In World War II, during fighting in late August and early September 1944, the historic walled city of Saint-Malo was almost totally destroyed by American shelling and bombing as well as British naval gunfire.
The Allies believed that the Axis powers had thousands of troops and major armaments built up within the city walls – though there proved to be fewer than 100 troops manning just two anti-aircraft installations, with the much larger and heavily armed Axis presence in strongpoints outside the city walls.
The Americans used napalm for the first time.
Saint-Malo was rebuilt over a 12-year period from 1948 to 1960.
Hyperinflation in Germany
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 8th. September 1923, a parade of housewives marched through Berlin carrying empty baskets in protest of their inability to buy food due to hyperinflation.
The Honda Point Disaster
Also on that day, the Honda Point Disaster off California sank seven destroyers and killed 23 sailors in the worst peacetime accident in U.S. Navy history.
On the evening of the 8th. September 1923, seven destroyers, while traveling at 20 knots (37 km/h), ran aground at Honda Point, a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel off Point Arguello on the Gaviota Coast. Two other ships grounded, but were able to maneuver free off the rocks. Twenty-three sailors died in the disaster.
The area of Honda Point is extremely treacherous for central California mariners, as it features a series of rocky outcroppings, collectively known as Woodbury Rocks (one of which is today named Destroyer Rock on navigational charts).
Called the Devil's Jaw, the area has been a navigational hazard since the Spanish explorers first came in the 16th. century. It is just north of the entrance to the Santa Barbara Channel, which was the intended route of the destroyers involved in the disaster.
Honda Point is located on the seacoast at Vandenberg Space Force Base, near the city of Lompoc, California. There is a plaque and a memorial to the disaster at the site. The memorial includes a ship's bell from Chauncey. A propeller and a propeller shaft from Delphy is on display outside the Veterans' Memorial Building, in Lompoc, California.
The Disaster
The fourteen ships of Destroyer Squadron Eleven were steaming south in column from San Francisco Bay to San Diego Bay. All were less than five years old.
The ships turned east, supposedly heading into the Santa Barbara Channel, at 21:00. The ships were navigating by dead reckoning, estimating positions from their course and speed, as measured by propeller revolutions per minute. At that time radio navigation aids were new, and not completely trusted.
USS Delphy was equipped with a radio navigation receiver, but her captain, Lieutenant Commander Donald T. Hunter, who was also acting as the squadron's navigator, ignored its indicated bearings, believing them to be erroneous.
No effort was made to take soundings of water depths using a fathometer, as this would require the ships to slow down to take the measurements.
The ships were performing an exercise that simulated wartime conditions, and Captain Watson also wanted the squadron to make a fast passage to San Diego, so the decision was made not to slow down.
Despite the heavy fog, Commodore Watson ordered all ships to travel in close formation and, turning too soon, went aground. Six others followed and sank. Two ships whose captains disobeyed the close-formation order survived, although they also hit the rocks.
Earlier the same day, the mail steamship SS Cuba ran aground nearby. Some attributed these incidents in the Santa Barbara Channel to unusual currents caused by the great Tokyo earthquake of the previous week.
The lost ships were:
-- USS Delphy, the flagship in the column. She ran aground on the shore at 20 knots (37 km/h). After running aground, she sounded her siren. The siren alerted some of the later ships in the column, helping them avoid the tragedy. Three of her crew died.
-- USS S. P. Lee was following a few hundred yards behind. She saw the Delphy suddenly stop, and turned to port (left) in response. As a result, she ran aground on the coast.
-- USS Young made no move to turn. She tore her hull open on submerged rocks, and the inrush of water capsized her onto her starboard side. Twenty men died.
-- USS Woodbury turned to starboard, but struck an offshore rock.
-- USS Nicholas turned to port and also hit a rock.
-- USS Fuller stuck next to Woodbury.
-- USS Chauncey ran aground while attempting to rescue sailors from the capsized Young.
Light damage was recorded by:
-- USS Farragut ran aground, but was able to extricate herself and was not lost.
-- USS Somers was lightly damaged.
Rescue Efforts
Local ranchers, who were alerted by the commotion of the disaster, rigged up breeches buoys from the surrounding clifftops and lowered them down to the ships that had run aground. Fishermen nearby who had seen the tragedy picked up members of the crew from USS Fuller and USS Woodbury.
The surviving members of the crew of the capsized Young were able to climb to safety on the nearby USS Chauncey via a lifeline.
The five destroyers in Destroyer Squadron Eleven that had avoided running aground at Honda Point were also able to help by picking up sailors who had been thrown into the water and by assisting those who were stuck aboard the wreckage of other ships.
Disposal of the Wrecks
After the disaster the US government did not attempt to salvage any of the wrecks at Honda Point due to the nature of the damage each ship had sustained. The wrecks themselves, along with the equipment that remained on them, were sold to a scrap merchant for a total of $1,035.
The wrecked ships had still not been moved by late August 1929, since they may be clearly seen in film footage taken from the German airship Graf Zeppelin as she headed towards Los Angeles on her circumnavigation of the globe; the film footage is used in the documentary film Farewell (2009).
Court Martial
The seven-officer Navy court-martial board, presided over by Vice Admiral Henry A. Wiley, ruled that the disaster was the fault of the fleet commander and the flagship's navigators.
They assigned blame to the captain of each ship that ran aground, following the tradition that a captain's first responsibility is to his own ship, even when in formation.
The eleven officers involved were charged with negligence and culpable inefficiency to perform one's duty. This was the largest single group of officers ever court-martialed in the U.S. Navy's history.
The court martial ruled that the events of the Honda Point Disaster were directly attributable to bad errors and faulty navigation by Captain Watson. Watson was stripped of his seniority, and three other officers were admonished.
Those officers who were court-martialed were all acquitted.
Captain Watson was commended by his peers and the government for assuming full responsibility for the disaster at Honda Point. He could have tried to blame a variety of factors for the disaster, but instead, he set an example for those others by accepting the responsibility entirely on his shoulders.
A Court of Inquiry recommended Cmdr. Roper for a Letter of Commendation for turning his division away from danger.
Navigational Errors
The fourteen ships of Destroyer Squadron Eleven were to follow the flagship USS Delphy in column formation from San Francisco Bay, through the Santa Barbara Channel, and finally to San Diego.
Destroyer Squadron Eleven was on a twenty-four-hour exercise from northern California to southern California. The flagship was responsible for navigation. As the Delphy steamed along the coastline, poor visibility meant the navigators had to go by the age-old technique of dead reckoning.
They had to estimate their position based on their speed and heading. The captain of the Delphy was also acting as the squadron's navigator, overriding his ship's navigator, Lieutenant Lawrence Blodgett.
The Delphy did have radio direction finding (RDF) equipment, which picked up signals from a station at Point Arguello, but RDF was new and the bearings obtained were dismissed by Hunter as unreliable.
Based solely on dead reckoning, Captain Watson ordered the fleet to turn east into the Santa Barbara Channel. However, the Delphy was actually several miles northeast of where they thought they were, and the error caused the ships to run aground on Honda Point.
The Kennedy intercepted radio bearings to the Delphy and to the Stoddert, and accurately determined the fleet's position. When the Kennedy reached the turning point, Commander Walter G. Roper, in charge of Division 32 (Kennedy, Paul Hamilton, Stoddert, and Thompson) at the rear of the column, ordered his ships to slow down and then to stop, and avoided running aground.
Ocean Conditions
At his court martial, Lt. Cdr. Hunter, the navigator of the Delphy, testified:
"I think there is also a possibility that abnormal
currents caused by the Japanese earthquake
might have been another contributory cause, or
magnetic disturbances connected with the solar
eclipse affected the compass – but of these I
cannot, of course, speak with any first hand
knowledge."
On the 1st. September 1923, seven days before the disaster, the Great Kantō earthquake had occurred in Japan. Unusually large swells and strong currents arose off the coast of California and remained for a number of days. Before Destroyer Squadron Eleven even reached Honda Point, a number of ships had encountered navigational problems as a result of unusual currents.
As the ships began their exercise run down the California coast, they made their way through these swells and currents. While the squadron was traveling through these swells and currents, their estimations of speed and bearing used for dead reckoning were being affected.
The navigators on board the lead ship Delphy did not take into account the effects of the strong currents and large swells in their estimations. Consequently, the entire squadron was off course and positioned near the treacherous coastline of Honda Point instead of the open ocean of the Santa Barbara Channel.
Coupled with darkness and thick fog, the swells and currents attributed to the earthquake in Japan made accurate navigation by dead reckoning nearly impossible for the Delphy. The geography of Honda Point, which is completely exposed to wind and waves, created a deadly environment once the unusually strong swells and currents were added to the coastline.
Once the error in navigation occurred, the weather conditions and ocean conditions sealed the fate of the squadron. The weather surrounding Honda Point at the time of the disaster was windy and foggy while the geography of the area created strong counter-currents and swells that forced the ships into the rocks once they entered the area.

A GRUESOME DISCOVERY.
A resident, of Claude Road, Epsom, Mr. Jervis Wright, while digging in his garden the other afternoon, came across what he thought were the remains of a newly-born child. He covered the remains over again, and yesterday morning reported the matter to the police. Sergeant McPhee, of Newmarket, at once proceeded to Mr. Wright's property, and dug up the corpse of a newly-born male child. The body was in a somewhat decomposed state, indicating that it had been buried there for several days. It was removed to the morgue, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted this morning, and when the result has been ascertained an inquest will be opened by the City Coroner (Mr. T. Gresham) at the Criterion Hotel. Inquiries are being prosecuted in the meantime in order to ascertain who was the mother of the child.

A slightly-built girl named Isabel Sinclaire appeared in the Police Court yesterday, to answer a charge of concealment of birth. She looked round her in a bewildered manner, and stated, in reply to the Court, that her age was 19, The charge arose out of the recent finding of the body of a baby in a garden at Epsom, The girl has been acting as a lady-help. Detective Marsack asked for a remand for eight days, pending an inquest on this body. This was granted, on condition that the girl went to the Door of Hope. Bail was fixed at one surety of £200. Mr. R. A. Singer appeared for accused.

FINDING OF A CHILD'S BODY.
SOME PECULIAR EVIDENCE.
AN OPEN VERDICT RETURNED.
The adjourned inquest upon the body of a male child, which was found by Mr. Jervis Wright, a resident of Claude Road, Epsom, while working in his garden on Sunday, the 5th inst., was resumed at the Criterion Hotel; Albert-street, yesterday morning. The City Coroner (Mr. T Gresham), presided. Chief-Detective Marsack conducted the proceedings on behalf of the police; and Mr. R. A. Singer appeared for Isabel Sinclaire, a single girl, the mother of the deceased child, who was in attendance under the care of Mrs. Hutchinson, of the Door of Hope.
Jervis Wright, an ironmonger's assistant, stated that the girl, Isabella Sinclaire, was employed by him at his residence, Claude Road, Epsom, as a help to his wife. She entered his service about July 19. On August 11 she was ill, and soon after she went to her people for a few days, but returned and worked till August 21. On that date his wife sent her home. As she left she said she was going to the pantomime, and that Pukekohe would be her future address. On the Sunday morning he destroyed some bedding and carpets in the girl's room, which were stained with blood. On the following Tuesday, Mr. Taylor, his wife's father, told him he had found a clot of blood in the garden where he had been digging. He wrote to the girl that night.
The letter, which was then read, narrated the state in which the room was left, and asked "What have you to say to this," adding "Well, I have not quite decided what to do as yet, but can tell you this, that unless you replace tihe value of the bedding and mats, etc., I shall take further proceedings and sue you for them. I have no wish to cause you any trouble, but cannot afford to lose the goods I destroyed."
Chief-Detective Marsack: You say there that you had not decided what to do. What was in your mind to do, to inform the police?
Witness: No, not to inform the police. Prior to that date he had no suspicion that a child's body was there.
Did you receive any answer to the letter? I got no reply.
Did any of the girl's relatives call on you later?—Yes Mr. J. Sinclaire, the girl's uncle, on Sunday, August 29. He said he had come, to settle the damage. On the 31st ult. he called at my office in town and paid me £5 9s 6d, the value of the articles destroyed, for which I gave him a receipt.
Witness went on to say that on Sunday, the 5th inst., while he was hoeing in his garden, he found the body of the child. It was seven or eight inches below the surface. He did not touch the body, but put a board over it, and covered it up. He told his wife, and thought of a good many things, but he did not think of informing the police. On the following day he called on Mr. Sinclaire, the father of the girl, and told him what he had discovered. He seemed much upset, and said he knew on the Saturday that there had been a baby. He said he did not know where the girl was. Witness asked him to find her and to tell her to come and take the body away from his property.
Chief-Detective Marsack: Did you threaten anything if she would not take it away?—I said I would inform the police if she did not.
What did, he say?—He said he thought the thing had been paid for and fixed up. I asked him what he meant by that. He said, ''You wrote to the girl and got paid for the damage to the articles." I said I did not know a baby was there. After that I consulted my solicitor, and he advised me to inform the police, as otherwise I would render myself liable to imprisonment. He then, told the girl's father that he was going to inform the police, and went up and saw the sub-inspector.
Mr. Singer: In your interview with the girl's father, did you not say that the only condition on which you would say nothing about it was that the girl came to your place that night and took the body away?
Witness Yes.
Did he not answer that he thought the proposal was too inhuman? No; he did not say inhuman. He made the remark that he did not think it fair to ask the girl.
Samuel Taylor, a gardener, residing in Stratford-street, Parnell, stated that the last witness was his son-in-law, and gave evidence regarding seeing a clot of blood in the garden.
Chief-Detective Marsack: It has been said that on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 17, you were seen to dig up the body of the child, and to bury it again. Is that true?
Witness: I never did, I deny it absolutely.
Sergeant McPhee, of Newmarket, gave evidence as to the unearthing of the body.
Detective Cox stated that on the 13th inst. he and Detective Sweeney interviewed the girl Sinclaire at Mount Albert. She made a statement, which she wrote down and signed. The statement was read as follows :—
"I am 19 years of age, and my father, Richard Kerr Sinclaire, lives at Otahuhu; my mother is dead. I was lady help at Mr. Jervis Wright's house in Claude Road, Epsom, from the middle of July, 1909, to August 21, 1909. While there, on August 11, I gave birth to a male child in my bedroom. This child was born dead. I did not tell Mrs. Wright or anyone about it. . . The following day, August 12, during Mrs. Wright's absence from the house, some time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., I buried the body of this child, as it was, in the garden opposite my bedroom window, at the side of the house. The body was only buried a few inches under the ground. About 3 p.m. on August 17, I was dressing, and looking out of my bedroom window, when I saw Mr. Taylor, father of Mrs. Wright, who was digging in the garden at the time, dig up the body of my child that I buried there. He was digging with a fork, but on finding the body he went and got a spade, dug a hole, put the body in, placed some green grass or a weed over it, and then covered it with earth. From the time the child was born until I buried it I kept the body in my bed, wrapped in one of my nightdresses. The nightdress I took to my home at Otahuhu and burnt it."
Detective Marsack said on Friday last the girl Sinclaire came to his office for come clothes. She said, "I hear you detectives are going to make it hot for me for hiding away." He assured her that there was no intention of the sort. She then said, " Well, you know, Mr. Marsack, I was mad at the time." He told her that perhaps it would be better if she did not say any more.
Richard K. Sinclaire, father of the girl, emphatically denied that he told Mr. Wright on the Monday that he knew on the Saturday that there was a baby, and that it was born dead.
Dr. Nelson, who performed the post-mortem, gave evidence, and stated that it was quite established that the child had breathed, and had breathed well.
Chief-Detective Marsack: From the internal and external organs there were no signs, I take it, to show a natural death ?— I could find no signs to show cause of a natural death. Although I cannot absolutely swear that the child breathed after birth, yet the well-marked extension of the lungs makes it extremely probable that it breathed after delivery. There were no signs of suffocation.
This was all the evidence.
The jury, after a short consultation, brought in the following verdict: —" We are unanimously of opinion that the child lived, but whether its death was caused through culpable neglect or ignorance we are unable to determine."

An inquest was held this afternoon concerning the death of Frank Burke, 35 years of age, who died at the hospital yesterday. Deceased was a gumdigger at Taupaki. On Monday morning he went with a friend to Kumeu, returning home at 5 o'clock. They had some liquor, but neither was drunk at any time during the day. That night deceased had a seizure, but his friend knew nothing of it till the morning, when he found him lying stiff and apparently dead. The man was brought to the hospital, where he died without recovering consciousness.

After the "Star" went to press yesterday afternoon, an inquest was held re the death of the man Frank Burke, who died suddenly in the hospital on Wednesday morning after having been brought into town from Taupaki the previous day in an unconscious condition. The medical evidence was that deceased died from chronic inflammation of the kidneys (Bright's disease). Probably this had been induced by working in swamps and leading a rough life, but possibly, also, the man had been suffering from the malady for years. The post-mortem disclosed no traces of alcoholism, and the body bore no marks of violence. The finding of the jury was in accordance with the medical evidence —that deceased died from natural causes.

Rows 12 - 16 in Anglican Division F are what can be known as ‘Potters Fields’, they were used to bury some of the people whose families were unable to afford funeral costs, institutionalised unidentified at the time of burial or had no-one to bury them. These plots were common graves with some having up to three individuals interred in each, as they were not purchased, permanent grave markers were not permitted to be erected.
These rows are now protected by native bush and it is now no longer known where either rows or individual plots are located in this area.
Even at this relatively early stage after the disaster extensive protest graffiti is seen on the perimeter wall of the abandoned factory along Union Carbide Rd.

Elric the last sovereign of Melnibone and the dreaming city Imrryr of the Dragon Isles is despondent and uneasy with his role as ruler. In order to fulfill his obligations he must practice and relish the cruel and decadent pleasures of the court. In addition he is an Albino addicted to certain drugs to sustained and maintain his strength. Prince Yyrkoon, Elric's cousin, plots for his death so he may assume the Ruby throne. Utilizing risky sorceries Elric avoids death at sea and returns to the Dragon Isles to confront the usurper. Prince Yyrkoon is forewarned and escapes taking Cymoril, his sister and Elric's Queen to be, into hiding in the young kingdoms. Elric peruses Yyrkoon and obtains the nefarious rune sword Stormbringer, the Black Sword, which starts his slow but inevitable spiral downward. A mesmerizing story, compelling characters, lots of dark undertones, fantasy at it's best.
The publishing history of this book may be of some interest to potential or curious readers. In 1972 Lancer issued an edited paperback edition of this story titled "The Dreaming City". The editing was done without Mr. Moorcock's approval. Subsequently the authors approved text was published under the title "Elric of Melnibone" by DAW in 1976.
There are eight books in the Elric saga; "The Dreaming City/Elric of Melnibone" is book 1.
On a personal note the Elric stories are a favorite of mine and I recommend them to any reader when enjoys fantasy literature.

La fuerza arrolladora que ha demostrado el movimiento por los derechos de las mujeres trabajadoras y jóvenes es imparable y sigue siendo un ejemplo muy poderoso. Por eso no es ninguna casualidad que la derecha franquista -PP, Ciudadanos y Vox- ataque e intente desprestigiar la lucha que millones de mujeres, junto con nuestros compañeros, estamos protagonizando.
En el Estado español estas manifestaciones del 25 de noviembre se celebrarán tras las elecciones generales del pasado 10-N, cuyos resultados vuelven a poner encima de la mesa una cuestión fundamental: que la lucha de la clase trabajadora y la juventud en defensa de nuestros derechos y contra los y las culpables de nuestra opresión es nuestra mayor fuerza. Desde Libres y Combativas no minimizamos ni restamos importancia al avance electoral de la extrema derecha de Vox, pero sí queremos resaltar que el bloque reaccionario ha vuelto a fracasar en su objetivo de hacerse con el Gobierno y que la derecha tiene enormes dificultades para seguir ganando apoyos: pierden casi 900.000 votos respecto a las elecciones del 28A.
La derecha y la extrema derecha son una amenaza muy real para todos los derechos que hemos conquistado en base a la movilización y a la lucha en las calles. Por eso sabemos, que la única forma de derrotar la ofensiva que representan es precisamente levantando una izquierda combativa en las calles, que defienda un feminismo revolucionario y de combate, un ecologismo anticapitalista, el fin de los recortes en la educación y la sanidad, el fin de la precariedad y la explotación, que garantice un sistema de pensiones público y digno… todas las reivindicaciones que durante años hemos exigido en las calles.
Conseguir todas estas reivindicaciones no es ninguna utopía. El próximo gobierno de coalición entre el PSOE y Unidas Podemos ha sido recibido por amplios sectores de la juventud y la clase trabajadora como una oportunidad para ello. Eso supone confrontar con los grandes poderes económicos, con los bancos, con la Iglesia Católica y los planes de austeridad de la Unión Europea. No queremos palabras, queremos hechos. Ya tenemos la experiencia de los últimos meses de gobierno del PSOE, que a pesar de considerarse el "gobierno más feminista de la historia", seguía respetando, entre muchas otras cosas, la justicia franquista y patriarcal que deja en libertad a violadores y culpa a las víctimas. No echamos a Rajoy de la Moncloa ni hemos derrotado a la derecha en las urnas dos veces para que todo siga igual. ¡La lucha debe continuar!
Somos feministas y anticapitalistas
La batalla contra la violencia machista es la lucha contra el sistema capitalista que la genera. Es la lucha contra la cosificación y la mercantilización de nuestros cuerpos, contra la trata, los vientres de alquiler, la prostitución y la pornografía. Es la lucha por unos salarios justos y unos puestos de trabajo dignos. Por una educación sexual inclusiva en los centros educativos para educar en el respeto, la igualdad y la inclusión. Contra la LGTBIfobia y la moral podrida de la Iglesia Católica.

..................................................Monday, November 25 is International Day against sexist violence and massive demonstrations will be held throughout the world in response to this scourge. As we have done on many occasions - from March 8, through the massive mobilizations against patriarchal justice that protected “La Manada” and, now to “Manada de Manresa” - in the Spanish State we will demand the end of the macho violence that year after year exploits us, oppresses, humiliates and murders.
We are not afraid, we are angry
The overwhelming force demonstrated by the movement for the rights of working women and youth is unstoppable and remains a very powerful example. That is why it is no accident that the Francoist right -PP, Citizens and Vox- attack and try to discredit the struggle that millions of women, along with our partners, are leading.
In the Spanish State, these demonstrations on November 25 will be held after the general elections of the past 10-N, whose results once again put a fundamental issue on the table: that the struggle of the working class and youth in defense of our rights and against those guilty of our oppression is our greatest strength. From Free and Combative we do not minimize or downplay the electoral progress of the extreme right of Vox, but we do want to highlight that the reactionary bloc has failed again in its objective of seizing the Government and that the right has enormous difficulties to continue gaining support : they lose almost 900,000 votes regarding the 28A elections.
The right and the extreme right are a very real threat to all the rights we have won based on mobilization and street fighting. That is why we know that the only way to defeat the offensive they represent is precisely by raising a combative left in the streets, defending a revolutionary and combat feminism, an anti-capitalist ecology, the end of cuts in education and health, the end of precariousness and exploitation, which guarantees a public and dignified pension system ... all the demands we have demanded for years on the streets.
Getting all these claims is no utopia. The next coalition government between the PSOE and United We have been received by broad sectors of youth and the working class as an opportunity for this. That means confronting the great economic powers, the banks, the Catholic Church and the austerity plans of the European Union. We don't want words, we want facts. We already have the experience of the last months of the PSOE government, which despite being considered the "most feminist government in history", continued to respect, among many other things, the Franco and patriarchal justice that frees rapists and blames the victims. We do not throw Rajoy de la Moncloa nor have we defeated right at the polls twice so that everything remains the same. The fight must continue!
We are feminists and anti-capitalists
The battle against sexist violence is the fight against the capitalist system that generates it. It is the fight against the reification and commodification of our bodies, against trafficking, rent bellies, prostitution and pornography. It is the fight for fair wages and decent jobs. For an inclusive sexual education in educational centers to educate in respect, equality and inclusion. Against LGBTIphobia and the rotten morals of the Catholic Church.
On November 25 we will take the streets again for all this. Because it is in the streets where we will overcome this system and build a new society where no one knows exploitation, injustice or misery.

Captain Scott's ill-fated South Pole 'Terra Nova' Expedition 1910 - 1913.
The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition, was an expedition to Antarctica which took place between 1910 and 1913. It was led by Robert Falcon Scott and had various scientific and geographical objectives. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901–04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. He and four companions attained the pole on 17 January 1912, where they found that the Norwegian team led by Roald Amundsen had preceded them by 34 days. Scott's entire party died on the return journey from the pole; some of their bodies, journals, and photographs were found by a search party eight months later.
The expedition, named after its supply ship, was a private venture, financed by public contributions augmented by a government grant. It had further backing from the Admiralty, which released experienced seamen to the expedition, and from the Royal Geographical Society. The expedition's team of scientists carried out a comprehensive scientific programme, while other parties explored Victoria Land and the Western Mountains. An attempted landing and exploration of King Edward VII Land was unsuccessful. A journey to Cape Crozier in June and July 1911 was the first extended sledging journey in the depths of the Antarctic winter.
For many years after his death, Scott's status as tragic hero was unchallenged, and few questions were asked about the causes of the disaster which overcame his polar party. In the final quarter of the 20th century the expedition came under closer scrutiny, and more critical views were expressed about its organization and management. The degree of Scott's personal culpability, and more recently, the culpability of certain expedition members, remains controversial.

Like many others, I've been in the grip of a particular TV series for years now, and it all came to a head this past Sunday. Not wanting to face the finale of "Breaking Bad" alone, I headed to the Cadillac Lounge. As it happened, I ended up watching it on a small TV screen above the bar, as their "big screen" was peppered with dead pixels, much as if someone had sneezed cocaine over it. Almost fitting, had they been blue rather than white speckles. The place was dead quiet but we nevertheless strained to catch the dialogue. Anticipating the problem, I had asked the barman to put on my TV's subtitles.
It went down largely as I'd anticipated and hoped. I wanted Jesse to survive. Skyler and family as well. Walter was destined to die one way or another, and I was fine with it. I predict my son won't share this view as he was routing for Walter White, despised Jesse's "weakness' and like many viewers out there, wished all kinds of ill on Skyler the "bitch" wife, who inevitably saw through Walt's deceptions and demanded accountability. In the scene in this image, Marie's phoned Skyler to warn her that Walt's been sighted in the vicinity. From this, we can anticipate that the 2 sisters will eventually reconcile. As she hangs up and the camera pans, we realize he is already present in the room. Skyler greets the visit with skepticism and mixed emotions. Her family's safety has been threatened by drug dealers and DEA alike. She's endured so many lies and deception from Walt in the past, and been drawn in far too deeply. If Walt's skill and passion was chemistry, hers was accounting, which she took to with growing enthusiasm when he required her specific talent to "launder" the drug money. Walt had tried to deflect all culpability towards himself in a previous phone call (and episode) to Skyler. Made in full expectation that the DEA were listening in, he had established her as an unwitting, unwilling victim of his alter ego, the monstrous, murderous tyrant and drug lord, Heisenberg. Shady lawyer Saul had advised Walt to hand himself in rather than going on the lam, as he knew the DEA would continue to look towards Skyler if they couldn't get their hands on either him, the missing DEA members or the drug money. Walt however still has an agenda, and it doesn't include jail. Uncle Jack and the Aryan brotherhood had ignored Walt's pleas to spare Hank's life, even after Walt had revealed that the GPA coordinates to the site in the desert also led to his money, all of which he offered up in exchange. The neo-nazis nevertheless executed his brother in law and DEA partner, AND stole the bulk of his stashed drug money, leaving Walt one remaining barrel of cash and an uncomfortable handshake, in return for sparing his life and to establish complicity in the murders. He intended to get it back, "for the family" of course, as “Then and only then am I through.”
In that scene, Walt had then spotted Jesse cowering under the car following the DEA shoot-out and betrayed him to the Brotherhood, saying he was owed his death. Did he anticipate they would spare it and rather enslave him to produce blue meth? It seems unlikely. I wonder why he chose that moment to reveal to Jesse that he had been instrumental in the overdose death of his girlfriend, Jane. It was a blow intended to demoralize Jesse further, but for what purpose? Revenge for ratting to the DEA, or did he also personally blame him for the death of Hank, as Jesse (with the DEA) had lured Walt to his desert stash by suggesting he had found it and was in the process of burning his money. In a frantic fury, Walt had been tricked into leading the DEA to the location, and thinking it only Jesse, had in turn sent for the Nazis to come rescue him. By the time he realized it included Hank, he had lost the power to change the course.
Now, in pursuit of his ultimate agenda, Walt has come to make his final good-byes, offer more excuses and provide his wife with yet another "Get out of Jail" card. He gives her a lotto ticket with numbers that now reveal the GPS coordinates to the desert grave of Hank and Gomez rather than the site of his drug money stash, for her to use as an additional bargaining chip with the DEA. He tells her who was responsible for their deaths, not including himself.
She stops Walt before he can offer up one last excuse for his transgressions.
“If I have to hear one more time that you did this for the family...” but on this occasion he surprises her, and likely himself, with the truth. “I did it for ME... I liked it. I was GOOD at it. I was alive.”
And that moment of revelation and honesty breathes new life into Skylar's character. Actress Anna Gunn, describing the scene during a discussion following the finale, said, “She was waiting so long... and became such a shell of a person." This released her, like a long awaited sigh. She allowed him to say farewell to baby Holly, and he watches his now estranged son enter the house, but from a distance. He has lost the love of his family, and they no longer need him.
For Walt too, the admission allows him to free himself for the final scene, where all obsessions, aspirations, hatreds and perhaps the only love he has remaining, culminate as temperature and ingredients fuse in a final cook.

Bouley Bay is on the north coast of Jersey. It nestles below Jersey's tallest cliffs, 400 feet high, and shares its name, derived from bouleau, a birch tree, with eight French villages
Safe anchorage
The bay is in some ways the ideal spot for a harbour. There is safe, deep anchorage with at least six fathoms of water close to the shore. It was already called a port in the Extente of 1274. It was called Portus de Boley, the Port of Bouley. Dumaresq wrote in 1685: "Here has been a design to build a mole, which might be made to secure great ships from all winds or weathers, the materials being at hand." But the steepness of the hills would have made it difficult to transport the cargoes, nor could a town of any size have been built on them.
The small pier was not constructed until 1828, although some 150 years earlier it was considered a possible location for a substantial harbour. However, there was too little land at sea level to allow for any significant buildings to be constructed and access was extremely difficult, so the plan never came to fruition. The pier was built by the States for the oyster fishermen and for defence, and the initials of the contractor, F de la Mare, can be seen engraved in the harbour wall.
On the cliff top immediately to the South is Jardin d'Olivet, where in 1549 French invaders who had already occupied Sark were repulsed by the Militia and forced to retreat and head for St Malo. During the English Civil War Parliamentary troops landed at Bouley Bay aiming to capture prominent Royalists, but most had already sought refuge in Mont Orgueil and Elizabeth Castle.
After the Riot of 1769 Colonel Bentinck disembarked his Highlanders here and marched into the town to restore order.
Such a danger spot obviously had to be guarded. When the first three cannon arrived in Jersey, apart from those in the castle, one was placed in the bay; and from that day forward the States were constantly discussing further defences. Two bulwarks were made, and a guard-house and two magazines. A beacon was erected to give the alarm signal. Then L'Etaquerel Fort was built on the east of the bay and on the west a two-gun battery was erected above the present pier. This is called the Leicester battery, and a demi-culverin had been installed there in 1596, hence the name, after the Elizabethan Earl of Leicester. In 1835 a lower battery was built at L'Etaquerel, and the one on the west was replaced by a larger five-gun battery.
Hill Climb
The Bouley Bay Hill Climb is one of the island's most popular sporting events, attracting large crowds to the slopes of the hill for its three runnings each year, including an international event.
The story of Bouley Bay mirrors the development of the military, shipping and tourism in Jersey from the 16th to the 21st century. It is the people of the area and the effect of these developments on their lives which bring the stories of Bouley Bay to life. In July 1549 a French expedition landed at Bouley Bay. They met the local militia at Jardin d’Olivet and after a fight in which the Lieut-Bailiff, Jurat Helier de la Rocque, was killed, the French were defeated and retired to St Malo with their dead and wounded.
Fortifications
The battle of 1549 must have influenced the States decision in 1596 to place a cannon at the harbour. The responsibility for its upkeep was divided between the Constables of Trinity, St Martin, St John and Grouville.
Developments in fortifications at Bouley Bay continued throughout the French and Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. On 5 May 1807 the States approved a proposal that a magazine in stone be built to lodge the munitions and cannon of the battery of the harbour.
A record of the fortifications of the Island compiled in 1857 includes a number of details concerning the defences at Bouley Bay. The fortifications listed are Vicart Battery, Les Hurets Battery, Leicester Battery, Bouley Battery, Les Charriers, Hommet, l’Islet and Le Tacqueral. The volume records that since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 ‘a powerful enclosed battery near the pier has been constructed’.
Harbour
It was in the 19th century that a number of harbours, including Bouley Bay, were developed. The rise of the oyster fishing industry led to a significant number of boats being moored around the bays of the Island and increased calls from the fishermen for protection for their vessels.
In 1826 petitions addressed to the States of Jersey were received from a large number of inhabitants of different parishes concerning the harbours of La Rocque, Bouley and Rozel. The petitioners asked for protection for boats in those areas.
In November 1826 the States authorised the construction of a jetty at Bouley Bay. The construction of the original jetty sheltered the fishing fleet, but in 1839 a second petition from the fishermen asked for additional works at the harbour. The additional works to extend the jetty were drawn up by Mr Walker in 1845 and then revised by architects Le Sueur and Bree in 1869.
Drowning
As is the case with many of the bays around the island, a number of stories exist of individuals drowning in the sometimes hazardous waters of Bouley Bay.
In 1880 newspapers reported an accident in Bouley Bay in which Bienaime Le Fillastre drowned just outside the harbour. The inquest found that Bienaime was well known for his ‘drunken habits’ and that at 2.45 on the morning of the accident he and T Le Masurier had knocked on the door of the hotel and purchased a bottle of brandy, and borrowed the key to the stable where Le Masurier kept his boat.
The hotel keeper, who was a witness at the inquest, was Thomas Perree. He is described in 1881 as a 22-year-old who was married to Emily, who was 34. The hotel which Thomas and Emily ran was the establishment that became the Water’s Edge.
Banker's downfall
Significant residential properties in the Bouley Bay area include Rockmount, which, with its gardens, was built by Josue Le Bailly on land that he purchased from Charles Nicolle and Jean Sinel in 1857. In the 1861 census Josue was 49 and was listed as a Jurat, banker and ship owner. In his lifetime he had links with the Jersey Imperial Hotel Company, was a trustee of the Jersey Savings Bank, and was Procureur du Bien Public for St Helier.
He was also the chairman of the Jersey Mercantile Union Bank, which opened in 1834 and dramatically suspended payments on 1 February 1873. This was the leading bank in the island and it closed with liabilities of £300,000 and assets of only £30,000.
Josue Le Bailly was sent to prison on 18 February for ‘breach of trust’. He was put on trial for embezzlement and culpable fraud and neglect at the Criminal Assizes in May 1873. The trial was eagerly followed and reported in the newspapers because Le Bailly had been a popular and respected figure in the island and the closure of the bank had a significant impact on many islanders.
The trial continued for 11 days, with Advocate Henry Le Vavasseur dit Durell representing the defence. The newspapers recorded in detail the summing up, with Advocate Durell giving a spirited oration, talking of Nicolle as ‘the man whom not three months ago we looked upon with pride, as the ornament of our judicial bench, the father whom everybody loved and respected, to be arrested in the middle of the night, in the midst of his family, to be cloistered up within the four walls of a prison and, oh horror, dragged from the court to the prisonh, and from the prison to court, in that vehicle which usually contains convicts of the first order’.
The main defence was mental infirmity, with Advocate Durell highlighting that his client had suffered an accident on leaving his house at Bouley Bay in July 1869. He had fallen from his carriage and fractured his skull, leaving him senseless for seven days. The advocate also brought witnesses to attest to Nicolle’s change in mental state after the accident. He painted a picture of a man who had memory lapses and could at times be well, and at other times incoherent.
The jury found him guilty of three of the counts of which he was accused and sentenced him to five years penal servitude.
One of the main events in the island’s motor sport calendar is the Bouley Bay Hill Climb, which is organised by the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club. The first hill climb took place in 1920 and the events continued through the 1920s and 30s, until they were stopped by the German Occupation.
The club was quick to organise races after the Occupation and the ‘’Evening Post’’ of 8 February 1946 highlighted the plans for motor racing in the island in the autumn, with a proposed hill climb at Bouley Bay. The following year Bouley Bay was one of only five venues in the inaugural British Hill Climb Championship, and has held championship events ever since.
High cliffs
From the Nez de Guet, where Rozel Bay ends, to Vicard Point, where Bouley Bay ends, is about one and half miles as the crow flies. Here the coastline is mainly backed by 200-300 feet cliffs. Immediately to the west of the Nez de Guet is a small cove called Le Sauchet, which means ‘a place drenched with spray‘.
The next headland is the Tour de Rozel, with its widely recognised White Rock and tidal race, which has been the scene of a number of shipwrecks over the years. In April 1887 the 30-ton coaster Normandy foundered here while running for shelter. The only survivor was the ship’s boy, who was found the following morning clinging to the cutter’s upturned small boat.
The rough pasture on these cliffs was used in medieval times to graze the coarse fleeced multi-horned sheep that were the foundation for the island’s famed knitting industry; although islanders very soon realised that more money was to be made by importing the better quality English wool for their product.
The popular notion of Bouley Bay is the area from l’Etacquerel to the pier. L’Etacquerel comes from the old Norse word for a heap or a stack of rock – stakkr. This can still be seen just below the 19th century fort. The meaning of Bouley Bay, however, is a bit uncertain; one theory is that it comes from the old Norse words for a dwelling and a bay – bol and vik.
Just beyond L’Etacquerel Fort lie the remains of the ss Ribbledale, which was wrecked on the night of 26/27 December 1926. She was waiting to take on a cargo of granite from Ronez when she dragged her anchor during a gale and was driven ashore. The captain and crew succeeded in reaching shore in a small boat, but one of the firemen was missing. He turned up safe later in the day having ‘slept through the whole affair’.
Deep water anchorage
As early as 1274 the area was referred to as the port of ‘Boley’. In 1602 the States appointed Nicholas Richardson superviseur pour les coustimes des Etats aux Harves de Rozel, Bouley Bay et Ste Catherine. The work was hardly onerous. Despite having long been recognised as the best deep water anchorage in the island the pier is of fairly recent construction. In 1685 Philippe Dumaresq described the bay as “A very good road for any ships about two cables length (370 metres) from the shore, in 12 or 15 fathom water; secure for all southerly and westerly winds ... indeed the fittest place for a harbour of all the island “ although he did qualify it by pointing out that the high cliffs behind it make building and access extremely difficult.
This was also a lesson learned by the French in the summer of 1549, when they tried to mount an attack on the island by landing here. This was actually a diversionary attack designed to draw English resources away from their main campaign in Scotland. The French sent two squadrons of galleys to attack the Channel Islands. An attack on Guernsey was defeated, but they did successfully manage to capture Sark before moving on to Jersey. An English naval force lead by William Wynter defeated the French galleys while the French transports landed soldiers and Italian mercenaries in Bouley Bay. Once assembled Captain Breuil (de Bretagne) lead his men up the steep hill to Jardin d’Olivet, where they were surprised by the Island Militia, armed with their new cannon. Despite being totally defeated, the French managed to get back to their ships and retreat to St Malo.
Two hundred years later the bay saw the arrival of another military force. This time it was Lieutenant Colonel Rudolph Bentinck and four companies – about 200 men - of the Royal Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots). They had been sent to Jersey to restore order after the anti-Lempriere riots in September 1769. This time there was no armed resistance, which is just as well, as by then there were a number of defensive structures around the bay to prevent any such hostile landings.
Before there was a pier several large fishing boats were kept here. They were usually hauled above the high water mark using Crabbs (capstans). When the oyster industry was expanding in the 1820s it was decided to build a pier here, and Abraham de La Mare was commissioned to do the job. His pier, finished in 1827, was 36 metres long and nearly 14 metres high, and completed at a cost of £2,500. It was designed to provide shelter for up to 30 oyster cutters. Six of them were actually built here between 1824 and 1842. The Blampieds built four of them, and the largest - a 40-ton cutter – was built by John Pope in 1826. Over the same period another six open boats were decked over by the Le Masuriers.
Today Bouley Bay is popular with scuba divers and snorkelers. Its sheltered water is home to a wide variety of marine life and in 1993 the States landing barge La Mauve was scuttled about half a mile offshore to create an artificial reef for the enjoyment of recreational divers.
A place of myths
The bay is also associated with a couple of myths. The best known is that of a gigantic black dog with huge saucer-shaped eyes – Le Chien de Bouley (le Tchan du Bouole) - which is said to roam around the area frightening innocent passers-by. This may have been a story circulated by smugglers to keep prying eyes and gossips away from the bay and possible clandestine activity.
The older story associated with the area is the Cry of the Tombelènes, with its local lovers, an army of occupation, murders and suicide set around the cliffs (Les Tombelènes) above the Islet during the French Occupation of 1461 until 1468.
Beyond the pier the cliffs continue to Vicard Point, which takes its name from the old Norse Vik-vartha - the watch hill by the creek. It does not look much today, but in the late 17th century this little creek was referred to as Havre Vicart and described as “Here boats might land passengers but they can only ascend the cliffs in single file”. Sea travellers then were obviously a hardier bunch than todays.

Extermination works. At first. This is the terrible lesson of history. If Israel is not stopped — and no outside power appears willing to halt the genocide in Gaza or the destruction of Lebanon — it will achieve its goals of depopulating and annexing northern Gaza. It will turn southern Gaza into a charnel house where Palestinians are burned alive, decimated by bombs and die from starvation and infectious diseases, until they are driven out. It will achieve its goal of destroying Lebanon — 2,400 people have been killed and over 1.2 million Lebanese have been displaced — in an attempt to turn it into a failed state. It is already turning its genocidal fury on the West Bank. And, it may soon realize its long cherished dream of forcing the United States into war with Iran. Israeli leaders are publicly salivating over proposals to assassinate Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei (b. 1939) and carry out airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear installations and oil facilities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (b. 1949) and his cabinet, like those driving Middle East policy in the White House — Antony Blinken (b. 1962), raised in a staunch Zionist family, Brett McGurk (b. 1973), Amos Hochstein (b. 1973), who was born in Israel and served in the Israeli military, and Jake Sullivan (b. 1976) — are true believers in the doctrine that violence can mold the world to fit their demented vision. That this doctrine has been a spectacular failure in Israel’s occupied territories, and did not work in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, and a generation earlier in Vietnam, does not deter them. This time, they assure us, it will succeed.
In the short term they are right. This is not good news for Palestinians or the Lebanese. The U.S. and Israel will continue to use their arsenal of industrial weapons to kill huge numbers of people and turn cities into rubble. But in the long term, this indiscriminate violence sows dragon’s teeth. It creates adversaries that, sometimes a generation later, outdo in savagery — we call it terrorism — what was done to those slain in the previous generation.
Hate and a lust of vengeance, as I learned covering the war in the former Yugoslavia, are passed down like a poisonous elixir from one generation to the next. Our disastrous interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen, along with Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982, which created Hezbollah, should have taught us this.
But this is a lesson that is never learned.
How could the Bush administration imagine it would be greeted as liberators in Iraq when the U.S. had spent over a decade imposing sanctions that resulted in severe shortages of food and medicine, causing the deaths of at least one million Iraqis, including 500,000 children.
Israel’s occupation of Palestine and its saturation bombing of Lebanon in 1982, were the catalyst for Osama bin Laden’s (1957-2011) attack on the Twin Towers in New York City in 2001, along with U.S. support for attacks on Muslims in Somalia, Chechnya, Kashmir and the South of the Philippines, U.S. military assistance to Israel and the sanctions on Iraq.
I see nothing to alt Israel, especially since the Israel lobby has bought and paid for Congress and the two ruling parties and cowed the media and universities. There is money to be made in war. A lot of it. And the influence of the war industry, buttressed by hundreds of millions of dollars spent on political campaigns by the Zionists, will be a formidable barrier to peace, not to mention sanity.
Israel has been poisoned by the psychosis of permanent war. It has been morally bankrupted by the sanctification of victimhood, which it uses to justify an occupation that is even more savage than that of apartheid South Africa. Its ‘democracy’ — which was always exclusively for Jews — has been hijacked by extremists who are pushing the country towards fascism. Human rights campaigners, intellectuals and journalists — Israeli and Palestinian — are subject to constant state surveillance, arbitrary arrests and government-run smear campaigns. Its educational system, starting in primary school, is an indoctrination machine for the military. And the greed and corruption of its venal political and economic elite have created vast income disparities, a mirror of the decay within America’s democracy, along with a culture of anti-Arab and anti-Black racism.
By the time Israel achieves its decimation of Gaza — Israel is talking about months more of warfare — its facade of civility, its supposed vaunted respect for the rule of law and democracy, its mythical story of the courageous Israeli military and miraculous birth of the Jewish nation – which it successfully sold to its western audiences – will lie in ash heaps. Israel’s social capital will be spent. It will be revealed as the ugly, repressive, hate-filled apartheid regime it always has been, alienating younger generations of American Jews. Its patron, the United States, as new generations come into power, will distance itself from Israel. Its popular support will come from reactionary Zionists and America’s Christianized fascists who see Israel’s domination of ancient Biblical land as a harbinger of the Second Coming and in its subjugation of Arabs a kindred racism and celebration of white supremacy.
Israel will become synonymous with its victims the way Turks are synonymous with the Armenians, Germans are with the Namibians and later the Jews, and Serbs are with the Bosniaks. Israel’s cultural, artistic, journalistic and intellectual life will atrophy. Israel will be a stagnant nation where the religious fanatics, bigots and Jewish extremists who have seized power will dominate public discourse. It will join the club of the globe’s most despotic regimes.
Despotisms can exist long after their past due date. But they are terminal.
Nations need more than force to survive. They need a mystique. This mystique provides purpose, civility and even nobility to inspire citizens to sacrifice for the nation. The mystique offers hope for the future. It provides meaning. It provides national identity. When mystiques implode, when they are exposed as lies, a central foundation of state power collapses.
All Israel has left is escalating savagery, including torture and lethal violence against unarmed civilians, which accelerates the decline. The Israeli military has carred out 93 massacres in Gaza in the last year. This wholesale violence works in the short term, as it did in the war waged by the French in Algeria, the Dirty War waged by Argentina’s military dictatorship, the British occupation of India, Egypt, Kenya and Northern Ireland and the American occupations of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. But in the long term, it is suicidal.
The genocide in Gaza has turned Hamas’ resistance fighters into heroes in the Global South. Israel has killed hundreds of Palestinian leaders, including Yahya Sinwar (1962-2024). It assassinated Dr. Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi (1947-2004), one of the founders of Hamas, who I knew, and Khalil al-Wazir (1935-1988), known as Abu Jihad, and who founded the PLO with Yasser Arafat (1929-2004), who I also knew. But the daily humiliation, forced impoverishment, indiscriminate violence, long prison terms and torture is fertile training ground for resistance leaders. There is no shortage of radicalized Palestinians who can take Sinwar's place. The long struggle for freedom by Palestinians has made this point over and over and over.
Run, the Israelis demand of the Palestinians in Gaza, run for your lives. Run from Rafah the way you ran from Gaza City, the way you ran from Jabalia, the way you ran from Deir al-Balah, the way you ran from Beit Hanoun, the way you ran from Bani Suheila, the way you ran from Khan Yunis. Run or we will kill you. We will drop GBU-39 bombs on your tent encampments and set them ablaze. We will spray you with bullets from our machine-gun-equipped drones. We will pound you with artillery and tank shells. We will shoot you down with snipers. We will decimate your tents, your refugee camps, your cities and towns, your homes, your schools, your hospitals and your water purification plants. We will rain death from the sky.
Run for your lives. Again and again and again. Pack up the few belongings you have left. Blankets. A couple of pots. Some clothes. We don’t care how exhausted you are, how hungry you are, how terrified you are, how sick you are, how old, or how young you are. Run. Run. Run. And when you run in terror to one part of Gaza, we will make you turn around and run to another. Trapped in a labyrinth of death. Back and forth. Up and down. Side to side. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten times. We toy with you like mice in a trap. Then we deport you so you can never return. Or we kill you.
Let the world denounce our genocide. What do we care? The billions in military aid flows unchecked from our American ally. The fighter jets. The artillery shells. The tanks. The bombs. An endless supply. We kill children by the thousands. We kill women and the elderly by the thousands. The sick and injured, without medicine and hospitals die. We poison the water. We cut off the food. We make you starve. We created this hell. We are the masters. Law. Duty. A code of conduct. They do not exist for us.
But first we toy with you. We humiliate you. We terrorize you. We revel in your fear. We are amused by your pathetic attempts to survive. You are not human. You are creatures. Untermensch. We feed our lust for domination. Look at our posts on social media. They have gone viral. One shows soldiers grinning in a Palestinian home with the owners tied up and blindfolded in the background. We loot. Rugs. Cosmetics. Motorbikes. Jewelry. Watches. Cash. Gold. Antiquities. We mock your misery. We cheer your death. We celebrate our religion, our nation, our identity, our superiority, by negating and erasing yours.
Depravity is moral. Atrocity is heroism. Genocide is redemption.
This is the game of terror played by Israel in Gaza. It was the game played during the Dirty War in Argentina, which I covered as a reporter, when the military junta “disappeared” 30,000 of its own citizens. The “disappeared” were subjected to torture — who cannot call what is happening to Palestinians in Gaza torture? — and humiliated before they were murdered. It was the game played in the clandestine torture centers and prisons I reported on in El Salvador and Iraq. It is what I saw in the Serbian concentration camps in Bosnia.
Israeli journalist Yinon Magal (b. 1969) on the show “Hapatriotim” on Israel’s Channel 14, joked that Joe Biden’s red line was the killing of 30,000 Palestinians. The singer Kobi Peretz (b. 1975) asked if that was the number of dead for a day. The audience erupted in applause and laughter.
We know Israel’s intent. Annihilate the Palestinians the same way the United States annihilated Native Americans, the Australians annihilated the First Nations peoples, the Germans annihilated the Herero in Namibia, the Turks annihilated Armenians and the Nazis annihilated the Jews. The specifics are different. The goal is the same. Erasure.
We cannot plead ignorance.
But it is easier to pretend. Pretend Israel will allow humanitarian aid. Pretend there will be a permanent ceasefire. Pretend Palestinians will return to their destroyed homes in Gaza. Pretend Gaza will be rebuilt — the hospitals, the universities, the mosques, the housing. Pretend the Palestinian Authority will administer Gaza. Pretend there will be a two-state solution. Pretend there is no genocide.
The vaunted democratic values, morality and respect for human rights, claimed by Israel and the United States, has always been a lie. The real credo is this – we have everything and if you try and take it away from us we will kill you. People of color, especially when they are poor and vulnerable, do not count. The hopes, dreams, dignity and aspirations for freedom of those outside the empire are worthless. Global domination will be sustained through racialized violence.
This lie — that the American empire is predicated on democracy and liberty — is one the Palestinians, and those in the Global South, as well as Native Americans and Black and Brown Americans, not to mention those who live in the Middle East, have known for decades. But it is a lie that still has currency in the United States and Israel, a lie used to justify the unjustifiable.
We do not halt Israel’s genocide because we, as Americans, are Israel, infected with the same white supremacy, and intoxicated by our domination of the globe’s wealth and the power to obliterate others with our advanced weaponry.
The U.S. occupation forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, replicating what they did in Vietnam, deliberately maimed, abused, beat, tortured, raped, wounded and killed hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians, including children.
“After the war,” Nick Turse (b. 1975) writes, “most scholars wrote off the accounts of widespread war crimes that recur throughout Vietnamese revolutionary publications and American antiwar literature as merely so much propaganda. Few academic historians even thought to cite such sources, and almost none did so extensively. Meanwhile, My Lai came to stand for — and thus blot out — all other American atrocities. Vietnam War bookshelves are now filled with big-picture histories, sober studies of diplomacy and military tactics, and combat memoirs told from the soldiers’ perspective. Buried in forgotten U.S. government archives, locked away in the memories of atrocity survivors, the real American war in Vietnam has all but vanished from public consciousness.”
Historical amnesia is a vital part of extermination campaigns once they end, at least for the victors. But for the victims, the memory of genocide, along with a yearning for retribution, is a sacred calling. The vanquished reappear in ways the genocidal killers cannot predict, fueling new conflicts and new animosities. The physical eradication of all Palestinians, the only way genocide works, is an impossibility given that six million Palestinians alone live in the diaspora. Over five million live in Gaza and the West Bank.
Israel’s genocide has enraged the 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide, as well as most of the Global South. It has discredited and weakened the corrupt and fragile regimes of the dictatorships and monarchies in the Arab world, home to 456 million Muslims, who collaborate with the U.S. and Israel. It has fueled the ranks of the Palestinian resistance.
What is happening in Gaza is not unprecedented. Indonesia’s military, backed by the U.S., carried out a year-long campaign in 1965 to exterminate those accused of being communist leaders, functionaries, party members and sympathizers. The bloodbath — much of it carried out by rogue death squads and paramilitary gangs — decimated the labor union movement along with the intellectual and artistic class, opposition parties, university student leaders, journalists and ethnic Chinese. A million people were slaughtered. Many of the bodies were dumped into rivers, hastily buried or left to rot on roadsides.
This campaign of mass murder is today mythologized in Indonesia, as it will be in Israel. It is portrayed as an epic battle against the forces of evil, just as Israel equates the Palestinians with Nazis.
The killers in the Indonesian war against “communism” are cheered at political rallies. They are lionized for saving the country. They are interviewed on television about their “heroic” battles. The three-million-strong Pancasila Youth — Indonesia’s equivalent of the “Brownshirts” or the Hitler Youth — in 1965, joined in the genocidal mayhem and are held up as the pillars of the nation.
We mythologize our genocide of Native Americans, romanticizing our killers, gunmen, outlaws, militias and cavalry units. We, like Israel, fetishize the military.
Industrial slaughter – what the sociologist James William Gibson calls “technowar”— defines Israel’s assault on Gaza and Lebanon. Technowar is centered on the concept of “overkill.” Overkill, with its intentionally large numbers of civilian casualties, is justified as an effective form of deternece. It is what Israel, cynically, calls “mowing the lawn.”
The incursion on Oct. 7 into Israel by Hamas and other resistance groups, which left 1,154 Israelis, tourists and migrant workers dead and saw about 240 people taken hostage, gave Israel the pretext for what it has long craved — the total erasure of Palestinians.
Israel has damaged or destroyed Gaza’s universities, all of which are now closed, and 60 percent of other educational facilities, including 13 libraries. It has also destroyed at least 195 heritage sites, including 208 mosques, churches, and Gaza’s Central Archives that held 150 years of historical records and documents. Israel’s warplanes, missiles, drones, tanks, artillery shells and naval guns daily pulverize Gaza — which is only 20 miles long and five miles wide — in a scorched earth campaign unlike anything seen since the war in Vietnam. It has dropped 25,000 tons of explosives — equivalent to two nuclear bombs — on Gaza, many targets selected by Artificial Intelligence. It drops unguided munitions (“dumb bombs”) and 2000-pound “bunker buster” bombs on refugee camps and densely packed urban centers as well as the so-called “safe zones” — 42 percent of Palestinians killed have been in these “safe zones” where they were instructed by Israel to flee. Over 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes, forced to find refuge in overcrowded UNRWA shelters, hospital corridors and courtyards, schools, tents or the open air in south Gaza, often living next to fetid pools of raw sewage.
The Israeli blockade of northern Gaza has left over 400,000 Palestinians are enduring a starvation siege and constant airstrikes in an attempt to depopulate the north. Israeli forces have killed 1,250 Palestinians in the assault, launched on October 5, a medical source told Al Jazeera. Reports from northern Gaza are difficult to obtain as internet and phone services have been cut and the few journalists on the ground continue to be killed. Civil defense units say they have been barred by Israeli forces from reaching the sites of strikes and their crews have been attacked.
Israel has ordered Palestinians to flee to designated “safe zones,” but once in these “safe zones” they have been attacked and ordered to move to new “safe zones.”
Israel has killed at least 42,600 Palestinians in Gaza, including 13,000 children and 9,000 women. It has wounded 99,800 others, many with life crippling injuries. It has killed at least 136 journalists, many, if not most of them deliberately targeted. It has killed 340 doctors, nurses and other health workers — four percent of Gaza’s healthcare personnel. Two-hundred and thirty-three UNRWA workers have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, the highest death toll in U.N. history. These numbers do not begin to reflect the actual death toll since only those dead registered in morgues and hospitals, most of which no longer function, are counted. The death toll, when those who are missing are counted, is well over 40,000.
At the same time, Israel has turned Gaza inrto a toxic wasteland.
“Nearly 40 million tons of debris, including unexploded ordnance and human remains, contaminate the ecosystem,” the U.N. reports. “More than 140 temporary waste sites and 340,000 tons of waste, untreated wastewater and sewage overflow contribute to the spread of diseases such as hepatitis A, respiratory infections, diarrhea and skin diseases.”
In a further blow, the Israeli parliament approved a bill to ban UNRWA, a lifeline for Palestinians in Gaza, from operating on Israeli territory and areas under Israel’s control. The ban almost certainly ensures the collapse of aid distribution, already crippled, in Gaza.
Israel has expanded its “buffer zone” along the Gaza perimeter to 16 percent of the territory, in the process leveling homes, apartment blocks and farms. It has pushed over 84 percent of the 2.3 million people in Gaza into “a shrinking, unsafe ‘humanitarian zone’ covering 12.6 percent of a territory now reconfigured in preparation for annexation.” Satellite imagery indicates that the Israeli military has built roads and military bases in over 26 percent of Gaza, “suggesting the aim of a permanent presence.”
Doctors are forced to amputate limbs without anesthetic. Those with severe medical conditions — cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease — have died from lack of treatment or will die soon. Over a hundred women give birth every day, with little to no medical care. Miscarriages are up by 300 percent. Over 90 percent of the Palestinians in Gaza suffer from severe food insecurity with people eating animal feed and grass. Children are dying of starvation. Palestinian writers, academics, scientists and their family members have been tracked and assassinated.
Seventy percent of recorded deaths have consistently been women and children.
Israel plays linguistic tricks to deny anyone in Gaza the status of civilians and any building - including mosques, hospitals and schools - protected status. Palestinians are all branded as responsible for the attack on Oct. 7 or written off as human shields for Hamas. All structures are considered legitimate targets by Israel because they are allegedly Hamas command centers or said to harbor Hamas fighters.
These accusations, Francesca Albanese (b. 1977), the U.N. Rapporteur for the Palestinian territories, writes, are a “pretext” used to justify “the killing of civilians under a cloak of purported legality, whose all-enveloping pervasiveness admits only of genocidal intent.”
“In August,” Albanese writes in her most recent report, “entry permits for humanitarian organizations nearly halved. Access to water has been restricted to a quarter of pre-7 October levels. Approximately 93 per cent of the agricultural, forestry and fishing economies has been destroyed; 95 per cent of Palestinians face high levels of acute food insecurity, and deprivation for decades to come.”
“In recent months, 83 percent of food aid was prevented from entering Gaza, and the civilian police in Rafah were repeatedly targeted, impairing distribution,” the report notes. “At least 34 deaths from malnutrition were recorded by 14 September 2024.”
These measures, she notes, “indicate an intent to destroy its population through starvation.”
The occupation and genocide would not be sustained without the U.S. which gives Israel $3.8 billion in annual military assistance. The U.S. has spent $ 17.9 billion on military aid to Israel in the last 12 months, including providing 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs, 500 Thomas Friedman (b. 1953) telling Charlie Rose (b. 1942) on the eve of the war in Iraq that American soldiers should go house to house from Basra to Baghdad and say to Iraqis “suck on this” ? That is the real credo of the U.S. empire.
As climate change imperils survival, as resources become scarce, as migration becomes an imperative for millions, as agricultural yields decline, as costal areas are flooded, as droughts and wilfires proliferate, as states fail, as armed resistance movements rise to battle their oppressors along with their proxies, genocide will not be an anomaly. It will be the norm. The earth’s vulnerable and poor, those Frantz Fanon (1925-1961) called “the wretched of the earth,” will be the next Palestinians.
The scorched earth tactics in Gaza and Lebanon are becoming common in the West Bank.
Thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank towns of Jenin, Nablus, Qalqilya, Tubas and Tulkarem live for days under curfew, making it difficult to access food and water. As in Gaza, the Israeli army targets ambulances, blocks entrances to hospitals and bulldozes streets, electricity and public health infrastructure.
Drones and war planes carry out airstrikes. Israeli roadblocks, checkpoints and blockades make travel difficult or impossible. Israel has suspended financial transfers to the Palestinian Authority, which nominally governs the West Bank in collaboration with Israel. It has revoked 148,000 work permits for those who had jobs in Israel.
“The gross domestic product (GDP) of the West Bank contracted by 22.7 percent, nearly 30 percent of businesses have closed, and 292,000 jobs have been lost,” the report reads. Over 692 Palestinians — “10 times the previous 14 years’ annual average of 69 fatalities,” have been killed and more than 5,000 have been injured. Of the 169 Palestinian children who have been killed, “nearly 80 percent were shot in the head or the torso.”
Albanese’s report dismisses the claim that Israel is carrying out the assault in Gaza and the West Bank to “defend itself,” “eradicate Hamas” or “bring the hostages home,” charging that these claims are “camouflage,” a way of “invisibilizing the crime.” Genocidal intent, as Judge Dalveer Bhandari (b. 1947) from the ICJ points out, “may exist simultaneously with other, ulterior motives.”
Rather, the incursion into Israel by Hamas and other resistance fighters on Oct. 7 “provided the impetus to advance towards the goal of a ‘Greater Israel.’”
Egypt and the other Arab states have refused to consider accepting Palestinian refugees. But Israel is banking on creating a humanitarian disaster of such catastrophic proportions that these countries, or other countries, will relent so they can depopulate Gaza and turn their attention to ethnically cleansing the West Bank. That is the plan, although no one, including Israel, knows if it will work.
There is only one way to end the ongoing genocide in Gaza. It is not through bilateral negotiations. Israel has amply demonstrated, including with the assassination of the lead Hamas negotiator, Ismail Haniyeh (1962-2024), that it has no interest in a permanent ceasefire. The only way for Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians to be halted is for the U.S. to end all weapons shipments to Israel. And the only way this will take place is if enough Americans make clear they have no intention of supporting any presidential ticket or any political party that fuels this genocide.
The arguments against a boycott of the two ruling parties are familiar: It will ensure the election of Donald Trump (b. 1946). Kamala Harris (b. 1964) has rhetorically shown more compassion than Joe Biden (b. 1942). There are not enough of us to have an impact. We can work within the Democratic Party. The Israel lobby, especially the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which owns most members of Congress, is too powerful. Negotiations will eventually achieve a cessation of the slaughter.
In short, we are impotent and must surrender our agency to sustain a project of mass killing. We must accept as normal governance the shipment of billions of dollars in military aid to an apartheid state, the use of vetoes at the U.N. Security Council to protect Israel and the active obstruction of international efforts to end mass murder. We have no choice.
Genocide, the internationally recognized crime of crimes, is not a policy issue. It cannot be equated with trade deals, infrastructure bills, charter schools or immigration. It is a moral issue. It is about the eradication of a people. Any surrender to genocide condemns us as a nation and as a species. It plunges the global society one step closer to barbarity. It eviscerates the rule of law and mocks every fundamental value we claim to honor. It is in a category by itself. And to not, with every fiber of our being, combat genocide is to be complicit in what Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) defines as “radical evil,” the evil where human beings, as human beings, are rendered superfluous.
The fundamental lesson of the Holocaust, which writers such as Primo Levi (1919-1987) stress, is that we can all become willing executioners. It takes very little. We can all become complicit, if only through indifference and apathy, in evil.
“Monsters exist,” Levi, who survived Auschwitz, writes, “but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.”
To confront evil — even if there is no chance of success — keeps alive our humanity and dignity. It allows us, as Václav Havel (1936-2011) writes in “The Power of the Powerless,” to live in truth, a truth the powerful do not want spoken and seek to suppress. It provides a guiding light to those who come after us. It tells the victims they are not alone. It is “humanity’s revolt against an enforced position” and an “attempt to regain control over one’s sense of responsibility.”
What does it say about us if we accept a world where we arm and fund a nation that kills and wounds hundreds of innocents a day?
What does it say about us if we support an orchestrated famine and the poisoning of the water supply where the polio virus has been detected, meaning tens of thousands will get sick and many will die?
What does it say about us if we permit for over 12 months the bombing of refugee camps, hospitals, villages and cities to wipe out families and force survivors to camp out in the open or find shelter in crude tents?
What does it say about us when we accept the murder of 11,000 children, although this is surely an undercount?
What does it say about us when we watch Israel escalate attacks on United Nations facilities, schools — including the Al-Tabaeen school in Gaza City, where over 100 Palestinians were killed while performing the Fajr, or dawn prayers — and other emergency shelters?
What does it say about us when we permit Israel to use Palestinians as human shields by forcing handcuffed civilians, including children and the elderly, to enter potentially booby-trapped tunnels and buildings in advance of Israeli troops, at times dressed in Israeli military uniforms?
What does it say about us when we support politicians and soldiers who defend the rape and torture of prisoners?
Are these the kinds of allies we want to empower? Is this behavior we want to embrace? What message does this send to the rest of the world?
If we do not hold fast to moral imperatives, we are doomed. Evil will triumph. It means there is no right and wrong. It means anything, including mass murder, is permissible. Hope lies in the university encampments, in the occupation of buildings, in the hunger strikes, in the streets, and of course, in third parties that defy the empire. These people, who march to the beat of a different drummer, are the nation’s conscience.
A moral stance always has a cost. If there is no cost, it is not moral. It is merely conventional belief.
“But what of the price of peace?” the radical Catholic priest Daniel Berrigan (1921-2016), who was sent to federal prison for burning draft records during the war in Vietnam, asks in his book “No Bars to Manhood:”
I think of the good, decent, peace-loving people I have known by the thousands, and I wonder. How many of them are so afflicted with the wasting disease of normalcy that, even as they declare for the peace, their hands reach out with an instinctive spasm in the direction of their comforts, their home, their security, their income, their future, their plans — that five-year plan of studies, that ten-year plan of professional status, that twenty-year plan of family growth and unity, that fifty-year plan of decent life and honorable natural demise. “Of course, let us have the peace,” we cry, “but at the same time let us have normalcy, let us lose nothing, let our lives stand intact, let us know neither prison nor ill repute nor disruption of ties.” And because we must encompass this and protect that, and because at all costs — at all costs — our hopes must march on schedule, and because it is unheard of that in the name of peace a sword should fall, disjoining that fine and cunning web that our lives have woven, because it is unheard of that good men should suffer injustice or families be sundered or good repute be lost — because of this we cry peace and cry peace, and there is no peace. There is no peace because there are no peacemakers. There are no makers of peace because the making of peace is at least as costly as the making of war — at least as exigent, at least as disruptive, at least as liable to bring disgrace and prison and death in its wake.
The question is not whether resistance is practical. It is whether resistance is right. We are enjoined to love our neighbor, not our tribe. We must have faith that the good draws to it the good, even if the empirical evidence around us is bleak. The good is always embodied in action. It must be seen. It does not matter if the wider society is censorious. We are called to defy — through acts of civil disobedience and noncompliance — the laws of the state, when these laws, as they often do, conflict with moral law. We must stand, no matter the cost, with the crucified of the earth. If we fail to take this stand, whether against the abuses of militarized police, the inhumanity of our vast prison system or the genocide in Gaza, we become the crucifiers.
“Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths,” the Roman historian Tacitus (c. AD 56 - c. 120) wrote of those the emperor Nero (AD 37 - AD 68) singled out for torture and death. “Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired.”
Sadism by the powerful is the curse of the human condition. It was as prevalent in ancient Rome as it is in Israel.
We know the modern face of Nero, who illuminated his opulent garden parties by burning to death captives tied to stakes. That is not in dispute.
But who were Nero’s guests? Who wandered through the emperor’s grounds as human beings, as in Rafah, were burned alive? How could these guests see, and no doubt hear, such horrendous suffering and witness such appalling torture and be indifferent, even content?
Who were Nero’s guests?
We are Nero’s guests.
History will judge Israel for this genocide. But it will also judge us. It will ask why we did not do more, why we did not sever all agreements, all trade deals, all accords, all cooperation with the apartheid state, why we did not halt weapons shipments to Israel, why we did not recall our ambassadors, why when the maritime trade in the Red Sea was disrupted by Yemen an alternative overland route into Israel was set up by Saudi Arabia and Jordan, why we did not do everything in our power to end the slaughter. It will condemn us for not heeding the fundamental lesson of the Holocaust, which is not that Jews are eternal victims, but that when you have the capacity to stop genocide and you do not, you are culpable.
“The opposite of good is not evil,” Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) wrote. “The opposite of good is indifference.”
The Palestinian resistance is our resistance. The Palestinian struggle for dignity, freedom and independence is our struggle. The Palestinian cause is our cause. For, as history has also shown, those who were once Nero’s guests soon became Nero’s victims.

After the warrior Theseus, the slayer of the Minotaur, abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos, she precipitately married the god of grapes, wine-making, ritual madness and ecstasy, Dionysus – and does not appear to have regretted her decision. The later iconographic tradition depicts Dionysus as an androgynous youth carrying a staff of fennel, but his female devotees were homicidal, ferocious and highly-sexed, and his male followers were virile satyrs. In some traditions, Theseus was not culpably forgetful, but was ordered by Dionysus to abandon Ariadne, and his memories of her were wiped clean as he sailed away from Naxos. We are at the mercy of the official publication of the complete report that has been the tact that your 4 committees have taken, the committee on public order and illegal drug that is one committee jointly with the committee on justice and human rights and the committee on public information and mas media and the committee on public services under Sen. Bong Revilla we will wait for the report but without prejudice further consultation with Sen. Chiz Escudero and Sen. Revilla the tendency of your committee on public order is to conduct at least one more hearing so that we can focus as it has been born out by bits and pieces of the IIRC report we can focus on the roles and relationship between the local government officials and the police in crisis situations like this like what happened last August 23 and the grievance mechanism that involve PNP personnel. We are planning this is just a plan of your Committee on Public Order and I will have to consult Sen. Escudero and Revilla we will call possibly Mayor Fred Lim, Vice-Mayor Isko Moreno, Col. Yebra and Ombudsman Gutierrez together with the original list that included the Sec. of DILG and the Chief of the PNP. That is the plan and the tendency as of this moment
That is the problem with dealing with the personalities if u noticed only 2 public officers have assumed frontally full responsibility. One is the President of the Republic and the other one is the ground commander, the Chief of the Manila Police who went subsequently on indefinite leave . In between we don't see the same tendency so it is ...for your Committee on Public Order and other Committees involve to look at in aid of legislation the weaknesses of the law, the weaknesses in the implementing rules and regulation including the relationships and of course the weaknesses of the offices involve or all of the above.
On whether there should be more names on the list recommended by the IIRC for possible filing of cases.
That is not our goal. The hearings of the IIRC have been exhaustive enough but we are looking at the possible gaps that your Committees in aid of legislation can cover. It is not within our mandate to look at the culpability legally of the personalities involved that is outside our jurisdiction our job and our mandate is to look at the law and everything that falls under the law, the implementation and the offices involve. We will not comment on whether the list should be increase or reduce. In fact, as we speak, a review by the no less than the office of the President is on going.
Q: You mentioned the next hearing that you will conduct inviting the Ombudsman, Are you optimistic about that since the Ombudsman was invited by the IIRC and was snobbed by the Ombudsman?
Maybe we will get a more positive response from the Ombudsman since the point in inviting the Ombudsman to this hearing aside in aid of legislation is to look at the grievance mechanism that maybe part of the root causes of this hostage taking incident last Aug 23, they might be more responsive to your committees invitation.
On P02 Gregorio Mendoza was not at all included in the list.
Whether we are surprised that will be limited to personal opinion but that is the judgment call that falls back on the exhaustive investigations and marathon hearing in fact that have been conducted by the IIRC. We will not comment on that.
Any parallel investigation that will serve the same objective will be welcome. The Senate Committees will limit itself to its mandate in aid of legislation not in aid of prosecution just to complete the entire picture. On the hostage crisis.
Actually, may mga mas malalalim pa diyan e at hindi lang sa kaso ni Capt. Mendoza. Siguro sya lang iyong narating iyong hangganan niya at nag desisyon siya na gumawa nung ganoong klaseng marahas na hakbang na kinukundena naman natin. Kaya itong susunod na hearing na binabalak natin kapag nakapag desisyon na kaming mga chairman ng committee. Si Senator Chiz and Sen. Bong Revilla ay titingnan, iyong grievance mechanism. Bakit? Alam mo, iyong kapulisan natin, isang reklamo lang sa ombudsman, internal affairs. 'Yung people's law enforcement board, local government, regional offices and provincial offices, isa lang ha. Talagang umiikot na ang mundo.suspendido, tigil iyong salaries and benefits. So, ang balak natin ay i-consolidate ito para kung may reklamo ka na sa isa, harassment o hindi, unang-una ay mapabilis iyong resolution at mapatanuyan na ito ay may laman, may sustansiya at hindi ito harassment case lang. Pangalawa, this is the other side of the coin so to speak, ito perennial na reklamo. Personally, lumalapit sa akintayo kasi ang kasalukuyang chairman ng public order. Yung kapulisan ha, yung legal support system na dapat tutulong sa kanila kapag kinakasuhan sila ay napakahina. Para bang pulis ka kapag kinasuhan ka, bahala ka sa buhay mo. So, kailangan palakasin din iyon para hindi na maulit ito sa ganitong klaseng sitwasyon. So tatanungin natin ang ombudsman na kausap ko the other day, immediately after the hearing, si Dir. Gen. Bacalso. On what the police should do
Yung batas kasi, huwag sanang detalyado para me latitude tayo doon sa implementing rules and regulations. Huwag masyadong broad para subject to misinterpretation. Iyan ang isang area na pag uukulan natin ng pansin. A sort of prescribing na ito ang gawin ninyo... A,B,C,D dahil kung gawin natin yan, magiging redundant na yung leadership ng kapulisan, yung leadership ng DILG. Ayaw natin na masyadong i micro manage ito and at the same time, ayaw natin ng masyadong motherhood baka mawalan na ng latitude yung batas. But, ang puno't dulo nito, you cannot legislate conscience. These are things that you cannot legislate. Talagang tao pa rin ang pag uusapan dito.
On hierarchy of authority
Kasama na iyon dahil sa nangyaring ito. Isa sa ating unresolved issues na lagi nating inilalantad kapag may pagkakataon, the DILG Secretary is wearing two hats... chairman din siya ng NAPOLCOM. Kaya kapag nagsalita siya, siyempre susunod ang kapulisan, meron din siyang administrative supervision over the local government officials. So, what hat is he wearing for every situation? Unresolved iyon. And, the PNP kahit masyadong prominent yan in this issues, is just one bureau under the Department of Interior and Local Government.
On the speech of Senator Santiago
Ang assessment natin doon ay hindi naman talaga nawawala. Naaalala niyo yong sinabi ni Archbishop Cruz, noong lumantad ang isyung ito, many congresses ago, sabi niya natigil ng 3 weeks tapos lumabas na naman. So, hindi talaga tumitigil. So, yan ang pag-uusapan ng mabuti para once and for all we decide. All out ba? Yung tanong ni Senator Santiago kahapon, na kung hindi natin kayang sugpuin, e di i-legalized na lang natin. Bakit tayo mag-aaksaya ng panahon, resources.. ba't natin ulit ulitin ang isyung ito. I agree, we have to make a decision. Now is the time that we face the issue and on. Nalantad iyan noong hearing di ba? Sabi ni Senate President, you study legalized again. Pero sabi niya din doon sa PCSO, sa pulis.. sa DILG, you submit to us your intelligence report, your studies. Pati BIR iniimbita na, pati anti-money laundering council.
Q: Sir, kapag na legalized, yong mga lumilitaw na nakinabang sa jueteng money, wala na bang liability?
Well, i-aaply natin diyan ang batas, yong retroactive effect. Pero may sinabi din si Archbishop Cruz, yong sagot nya sa katanungang "Archbishop, what do you think of legalizing it?" Sabi niya, kapag I legalized niyo yan ay may bago na naming susulpot na kapalit. Doon nawawala ang revenues, hindi ba? Kapag i legalized mo, assuming effective tayo, na sa kaban ng bayan mapupunta. Kapag ginawa mong illegal or may sumulpot na illegal, hindi sa gobyerno iyon mapupunta. Yon ang area... ang gray area sa batas.
On supporting the move to legalize jueteng
Senator: No, I support the move to make a decision already. I mean for information. Hinihintay pa natin yong intelligence report, yong report ng PAGCOR and PCSO and iyong magiging report ng BIR and anti-money laundering council. Iyon ang problema natin when we deal on decisions like this. Kulang sa impormasyon and then biglang you come up with the names and allegations. We have to be fair to each other.
On conducting another hearing regarding jueteng
I asked the same question because I have conducted and attended many hearings before in the past regarding jueteng. We are hoping and we should be working towards this objective na dapat this time may mangyari. In fact sabi ni Senator Santiago, may existing na mga batas, kailangan lang palakasin at i-refocus.
The problem has never been solved. Walang closure. May committee report, but the fact that jueteng exists means that even in aid of legislation we have not been effective in solving this problem, but I would also agree doon sa sinabi ni Chief PNP Bacalzo na this is a multi-dimensional problem. Example, pag walang alternative livelihood at ipilit nating sugpuin ito, there will be a rise in crimes against person and property, including illegal drugs. We have to deal with that.
On Congress legislating a law penalizing operators of jueteng.
Kung all-out. Tama 'yung sinabi ni Senator Santiago. That is if we consider Plan A, kung all-out. Pag-aralan din natin 'yung Plan B, legalize. So, choices.
On whether the government is conceding the fight against jueteng with its legalization.
'Yun na nga ang sabi ni Senator Santiago, tanggapin na natin. Ilang taon na, marami nang administrasyon, marami nang Presidente, hanggang ngayon nandiyan pa 'yung jueteng. Baka kailangang tanggapin na natin na ang solusyon lamang diyan ay i-legalize. So, hindi ko sinasabing all-out war, or i-legalize. Panahon na para magdesisyon tayo at 'yung desisyon na 'yan, manggagaling sa impormasyon na manggagaling sa inyo sa media, sa police, sa DILG, sa BIR, kay Archbishop Cruz, sa anti-money laundering council, sa PCSO, sa Pagcor. 'Yan ang mga involved so far.
On creating a law that will kill illegal gambling.
'Yun ang magiging dulo nito. 'Yun ang objective dito. Makagawa ng batas, palakasin 'yung batas. Pero 'yung batas na 'yan, ay tutugon pa rin sa desisyon na binanggit natin kanina. Either palakasin natin 'yung batas para all-out na tayo na sugpuin 'yan for the last time, or palakasin 'yung batas, para i-legalize 'yan. 'Yun ang magiging desisyon natin.
Actually we have to dig deep into our archives so that we can consider the whole body, the entire body of hearings, propose legislation, resolutions, including intelligence reports on information that will allow us once and for all to make an informed decision and choice. Until we are able to consolidate, magiging piecemeal na naman ito at pag nawala na naman ang isyung ito, makakalimutan at maghe-hearing na naman tayo sa 16th Congress.
Q: Sir, 'yung legalization parang nakaka-frustrate if you go towards that all-out instead of information? Kasi 'yung mga nilagay sa listahan, both by Archbishop Cruz and Senator Santiago, what, they go scot-free?
That is entirely procedural. 'Yung tinanong kanina, ito ba ay may retroactive effect? 'Yung mga na-pinpoint na ebidensiya, hindi ito allegations lang na talagang involved, will the law impact on them retroactively? That is a legal, technical and procedural issue. Walang pinag-uusapa diyan.
On how to enforce the law against jueteng when it seems impossible to do so.
Hindi lang 'yan. Iba 'yung issue na kaya mo bang sundin 'yung money trail? Paano mo susundan kung cash ang transaction, at hindi dumadaan sa banking system? How do you trace that? Kung nakatago sa baul o sa ilalim ng kama o sa sako 'yung pera, paano mo susundan? That's why you want this, to get this straight from the BIR, from the Anti-Money Laundering Council, and corroborate this with what should be accurate intelligence reports from the PNP, the DILG, and add that to the initial information that was given by Archbishop Cruz.
On how to trace the money used in jueteng if it did not pass AMLA
Tama 'yan, that is part of the complexity of problems kaya I agree that we should reduce it to its simplest terms and make a decision dahil sa ang problema talaga, ang hirap i-trace. Ang hirap i-pinpoint. Wala kang ebidensiya, wala kang icha-charge. Involved ang police allegedly. Involved ang government official, media. Now, we have another dimension, some nationally elected officials. How do you fight a problem like that? Legalize. It might partially solve the problem but it is better than what we have now. We're up against a blank wall.
On whether legalization of jueteng means integration with the STL.
No, it does involve STL. All forms of gambling. Technically, ang hinahanap natin 'yung revenues na dapat mapunta sa gobyerno. Pag sinabi nating gambling, illegal lahat 'yan, 'yung karera ng Bangka, pag pumusta kayo diyan, illegal 'yan. Hindi pupunta sa gobyerno 'yung kinita mo diyan.
Pero at the same time ginagamit na cover 'yun. Kunyari STL, pero under the surface, illegal pala, jueteng pala. Ang hinahanap talaga natin dito, kung saan napupunta 'yung dapat mapunta sa gobyerno para magamit? Nakit ninyo 'yung figures na sinabi ni Senator Santiago kahapon. Kaya illegal, dahil hindi napupunta sa gobyerno. Napupunta sa kung sino-sinong bulsa, kung kani-kaninong bulsa.
Q: Siguro sir, misnomer 'yung illegalize 'yung jueteng? That is not the only form of illegal gambling. They now have such things as loteng, last two.
Hindi lang 'yan. The moral issues, sabi nga ni Senator Santiago, she will not debate on that. 'Yung kaunting kinikita ng magsasaka o tricycle driver, pag tinaya sa jueteng at natalo, magugutom 'yung pamilya. Ngayon, may other dimension, dinadaya daw ito. May dayaan, how do we deal with that?
On Senator Lacson
Separate issue 'yan. The Ethics Committee has to decide on this, deliberate on this, at 'yung procedural na legal, it is entirely up to the courts. Sooner or later, if you ask me, I would advice my classmate Senator Lacson to subject himself to due process. That is the only way to go.
