Weeks ago I had planned on doing the SE slide on Colden and then descending via the trail down to Lake Arnold. However from out of nowhere toward the end of last week came the idea, "How about SE up, Trap down?"
I had never done the SE before, but have climbed up the Trap, but not on to the new Irene slide. So there were a number of variables to think about, and nobody that I talked to about my idea (which would include two parties that I met once I started my descent) was recommending it. I felt confident about my abilities, plus I figured if I felt uncomfortable at any point I could always double back. This of course would add a certain amount of time and length to my little adventure, but I was ready to deal with that.
In a nutshell - the weather was great, the approach was nice and cool and when I hit the SE and was exposed to the sun the updraft kept my temp down quite a bit. The base of the SE was really interesting, not to mention very fun - lots to look at and lots of route options. Further up where there was more exposure, watching the views evolve was great. I found the SE to be a pretty tame climb. I had my rock shoes with me, but I didn't use them until my descent. I used New Balance trail runners without issue. The last couple sections of the SE were the most challenging, but I felt very comfortable on them. I basically shot straight up the final slab sections and then into the herd path which was very easy to find as it's dead center at the top of the slide.
I met some very nice people on the summit, took in the views, and made some time to think about my plan to descend the Trap. I felt confident that I could do it, but the only thing I had for gear were my rock shoes, and I was going to be doing it solo.
When I started my descent I found a check inside, but that was because the steeper, top section of the slide had a fair amount of water on the very top of it, so finding my first few steps had me wondering. Beyond that it was short steps and lots of stopping to whisk off the debris that I was picking up on my shoes. Aside from the debris which was there but not a game stopper, I didn't run into anything the made me too uncomfortable.
I had to crab crawl a couple times, there was some reverse flake climbing, also some good spots for some toe jams. Overall though the rock was really good, very sticky with lots of spots for my feet to land secure.
About 3/4 of my way down the slide I ran into a couple. The guy didn't say too much as to my plan at first, and told me that he wouldn't recomend it. My response was, "Yeah, nobody is." I explained to him though that I had a fair amount of slides under my belt and was feeling good about my progress down the slide up until that point so he opened right up and talked to me about which way he thought I should head beyond where we could see. And well, his advice for exiting the slide was good. Where it drops into the Trap I went right and found some nice cracks and a few longish ledges which made for an easy downclimb.
Actually, the Trap was the easier part of the descent. There was only one instance when I had to double back a bit and re-route, but I didn't find anything that gave me trouble. The fact that it was as dry as it was was a helping hand.
Exiting the Trap and turning around was indescribable. I had set a goal, I had done well throughout my little adventure on the mountain, and I was able to walk away unharmed being able to say, "I did it." Needless to say it was a very good day.
This spot on the abandoned golf course is only 200 yards from the green, or at least, what once was the green. The cart path tells us so.

Back in May, my friend, Yurie, travelled from Japan to Canada for a month-long homestay/ESL course. On arrival, Lindsay tweeted a photo of the two of them at the airport in Toronto, sending me into a frothing apoplexy of envy. That same morning, however, a much happier bank balance informed me that I'd just became a pensioner – arigatou, Japan, for the early retirement! – and I naturally took the appearance of my Japension money within hours of Yurie touching down at the airport as a cosmic sign to go join them.

Happy 150th to MIT.
MIT is usually known for its innovation in the general area of technology. But its contribution to arts remains a well-kept secret.
Being a graduate student at MIT Media Lab, we get to live by the famous saying, “Arts challenges technology and technology inspires arts”. During the first day at the lab as graduate students, we were told by the founder of MIT Media Lab, Nicholas Negroponte, that Media Lab was created to welcome students who wouldn’t otherwise fit into the traditional fabric of MIT. This unique culture motivates students to leave their comfort zone and learn new things everyday with a fearless mind.
To celebrate MIT’s 150th anniversary, Tod Machover, professor of Media Lab, takes the initiative of Fast (Festival of Arts, Science and Technology) and encourage students to submit projects. This set is dedicated to all the amazing projects that students have developed over the course of 6 months, including one (http://moodmeter.media.mit.edu/) from me.
The Lodge and Golf Course at Edgewood Tahoe, Stateline, Nevada
The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, a 154-room, non-gaming hotel with spa, restaurant, conference center and other amenities including a small public beach, all adjoining the existing Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course was announced in 2015 (opened in June 2017) and expected to cost more than $100 million. In 2010 Chuck Scharer was named president and CEO of Edgewood Companies (formerly Park Cattle Company), retiring in 2016. He was instrumental in bringing the $100 million Edgewood Tahoe Hotel to reality. "Like grand lodges of the American West, we hope it will inspire awe with its views and location," Chuck Scharer said. Edgewood Companies is owned by members of the Park family, descendants of pioneer cattle ranchers who settled at South Tahoe in the 1870's.
The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe is described as being "reminiscent of the great national park facilities" The interior designers use of wood and rock give the decor a mountain theme. The Lodge projects a rustic waterfront profile that provides vistas, by way of a Great Room, out onto Tahoe's waters. This is the world class resort that South Lake Tahoe has needed for years.
In the early 1970s Brooks Park obtained permits to construct a major hotel facility on their ranch land. That facility opened in 1978 as the Park Tahoe. Soon after, family patriarch Brooks Park realized he was a rancher and not a resort operator. The hotel, although not the land beneath it, was let go. It was leased to Caesars Tahoe. The hotel was operated by Caesars until 2006 when the lease was obtained by Columbia Sussex and rebranded as the MontBleu Casino. Park Cattle Co. also leases land at Lake Tahoe to Harveys and the Horizon Resort - now the Hard Rock Hotel.
Bobby King is General Manager of Edgewood Tahoe and serves on the company's management executive committee. He has over 30 years of experience at Edgewood Tahoe. Corinna Osborne is the Director of Hotel Operations. Osborne previously held operational roles as Food and Beverage Manager at Montbleu Resort Lake Tahoe and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe. Randy Fox holds the position of Director of Golf
Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, 100 Lake Parkway, Stateline, Nevada
The Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, designed by George Fazio, opened in 1968. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course had its origins as part of the cattle grazing land the Park family bought in the 1860's. Owned by Brooks Park (Park Cattle Company), he contracted with Del Webb Construction for most of the golf course construction. George Fazio said "The setting for the course had everything, the lake, snow -capped mountains and beautiful pine trees. My job was to complement what nature provided." George Fazio became involved with Edgewood through resort pioneer Del Webb, a mutual friend of Brooks Park. He said Brooks Park wanted only the best!
First general manager at the Edgewood Golf Course was Harley Williams, formerly with Hidden Valley Country club in Reno. The course has the distinction of playing in two states - Nevada and California. Edgewood has been the home to the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, a made-for-TV event owned and broadcast by NBC Sports, since 1991.
