According to tradition, the abbey was founded in about 617 in the course of the Hiberno-Scottish mission by Agilus and Eustace of Luxeuil, two monks of Luxeuil Abbey. It is believed to be the oldest monastery in Bavaria.
Reportedly during the first half of the 8th century, the abbey adopted the rules of the Benedictine order. By 932 at the latest, the abbey was under control of the Bishop of Regensburg. Following the confiscation of the abbey's silver church treasure and a ban on accepting novices, the abbey was officially dissolved on 18 March 1803 as part of the secularization of Bavaria during the process of German mediatisation.
On the initiative of King Ludwig I, Weltenburg was re-founded as a priory of Metten Abbey on 25 August 1842. It renovated the convent and repurchased other properties, including the brewery. It has been a member of the Bavarian Congregation of the Benedictine Confederation since 1858 and was raised to the status of an independent abbey in 1913.
This is of course for my Cornwall Church project which continues as well as for the 120 group (91/120 - Ravages of time)
Restormel castle had two chapels. One outside the building (outer ward) located in this area, and another inside (inner ward) almost directly opposite the entrance on the far side (picture taken also!) projecting to the East.
We were very lucky in that the castle is closed over the winter, but there were men clearing the site and the gates were open. We went in and they didn't stop us!
It was lovely to have the castle all to ourselves.
Chapel information:
A comprehensive survey of this estate, known as the ‘Caption of Seisin’, was made in summer 1337. This documents the Black Prince’s acquisition of his new properties and provides the most detailed description of Restormel Castle in its history.
It records an inner ward or enclosure (which survives today) containing a hall and three chambers over cellars, a chapel, and a stable for six horses, the last perhaps in the courtyard. There is no mention of a kitchen.
The survey also describes a larger outer enclosure (now lost) with a great hall and a further three chambers, all above cellars, together with a chapel, service buildings, and stabling for 20 horses. A lead conduit supplied water to the castle. Many of the buildings were already decaying at this time.

"Chilled Asparagus with Egg, Red Pepper and Oil and Vinegar"
Perfect for a brunch, or as a substitute for a salad at a dinner party. Makes a great and light first course. Very nice in summer when the weather is hot.
Put about 2-3 inches of water in a pot and bring to a boil. Trim the ends from the asparagus and place in the boiling water. Watch closely as you only want them to cook for a few minutes. Remove the asparagus, run under cold water to stop the cooking process and lay out in a single layer on a plate and place in the refrigerator to cool.
Boil eggs, and peel and chop. Take one red bell pepper and cut into strips for garnish.
Either make a dressing with olive oil, red wine vinegar, dijon mustard and a pinch of salt, or as I do at home, use Paul Neumans Olive Oil and Vinegar dressing. This stuff is excellent! Just do not refrigerate the open bottle. If you want, add a bit of dijon mustard to the Paul Neumans and whisk. Adds another layer of flavor to the dish.
Arrange asparagus on each plate, drizzle the dressing over the asparagus, top with chopped egg, and garnish with the red bell pepper.
This dish can be plated and kept in the frig until service or left at room temp for 1/2 hour before serving.

Navy Birthday Information - 13 October 1775
The Chief of Naval Operations has stated that the Navy Birthday is one of the two Navy wide dates to be celebrated annually. This page provides historical information on the birth and early years of the Navy, including bibliographies, lists of the ships, and information on the first officers of the Continental Navy, as well as texts of original documents relating to Congress and the Continental Navy, 1775-1783.
The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775 by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. The legislation also established a Naval Committee to supervise the work. All together, the Continental Navy numbered some fifty ships over the course of the war, with approximately twenty warships active at its maximum strength.
After the American War for Independence, Congress sold the surviving ships of the Continental Navy and released the seamen and officers. The Constitution of the United States, ratified in 1789, empowered Congress "to provide and maintain a navy." Acting on this authority, Congress ordered the construction and manning of six frigates in 1794, and the War Department administered naval affairs from that year until Congress established the Department of the Navy on 30 April 1798.
Not to be confused with the Navy Birthday or the founding of the Navy Department is Navy Day. The Navy League sponsored the first national observance of Navy Day in 1922 designed to give recognition to the naval service. The Navy League of New York proposed that the official observance be on 27 October in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had been born on that day.
In 1972 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized recognition of 13 October as the Navy’s birthday. In contrast to Navy Day, the Navy Birthday is intended as an internal activity for members of the active forces and reserves, as well as retirees, and dependents. Since 1972 each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion "to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service."

Which of course, makes me smile.
Last week I had received the Fuji X100F, which replaces my beloved X100 classic.
I had gone around the house trying it out.
The theme this week for Smile on Saturday is backlit close-up, and this seems to fit the bill.
That the doorway beckons makes me smile.
The contrejour light makes me smile.
The quality of the X100F makes me smile.

This is why it's called The Lotus Pond. This small pond is FULL of towering Lotus flowers and their beautiful huge leaves.
This pond is nestled at the end of a trail, on one side is a wide-open field letting in lots of sunshine. On the other side are woods with more trails waiting to be explored.
Those trails will have to wait because we always stop here to enjoy all the sights and sounds of nature.
