Annie L Watts authored this cookbook "beHealthy Cookbook" in July 2011. It is a healthy diet with 14 nutritionally balanced daily menus with recipes that are free of gluten, dairy, red meat, starch, yeast, citrus and table salt. See www.behealthycookbook.com
A scrapbook of cuttings and handwritten recipes compiled by Nina Gladys Barker (née Alexander) who was born in the late 1880s and died ca. 1975 and was the wife of Robert Beacroft Barker, merchant and politician in Jamaica. The recipes were probably compiled between 1940 (note that some early recipes were written on the reverse of the letterhead of the "Jamaica Central War Assistance Committee") and 1960. Many are of Jamaican origin. Most are sweet. There are manuscript recipes in other hands but most are in that of Nina Gladys Barker herself. Nina's only child is alluded to in the recipe, "Bruce's birthday cake".
I decided I am going to design a cookbook for myself with my favorite recipes in it. It's a way to collect the recipes I have used in the past and enjoyed, without having to scribble them down on a notepad or search for them on google again! I made the design from scratch in Illustrator. btw, that picture is of pumpkin cupcakes, not pumpkin bread. I couldn't find my bread picture... not that I looked very hard. Let me know what you think :)
So this is the end of this little story of the cookbook. But it's also the beginning. So far, DJ has sold 40 some copies, and the buyers are pretty happy about the purchase, and are eager to try out these recipes.
One of his friends in the printing business saw the book, and expressed the possibility of doing a 2nd edition in color. Another friends of his also like the photos, and actually contacted me for a possible photo project for her jewelry.
If you are interested in the cookbook, feel free to email me. :) I know DJ sells it for 16 dollars a copy. No, I don't profit from it if there is a sale.
Thanks for viewing. I hope you've enjoyed this series.
p.s. If you compare this photo with "Project Cookbook 06", you will notice that Kinkos did make my B&W image darker. DJ was right about having me make the B&W photos on the lighter side. Also, Swedish is in DJ's blood, and he has several Swedish recipes in the book. All the figures (and the table, actually) in this photo are Swedish symbols.
Update (Jan 21st): This is a quote from DJ: The point of the ninjas and small figures is precisely to distract and demystify cooking. Most cookbooks and chefs take themselves far too seriously leaving many homes without anyone to cook for fear of doing it wrong or badly. My theme in my cookbook was to simplify cooking so more people would do it. The surprise of the figures is supposed to be amusing so that we don't worry so much about getting it 'right'. Its just food after all.
Betty sent me home with this wonderful cookbook for my collection. I can't really justify buying another one (though this lack of justification seldom stops me), but I can't turn one down either!
Seafood Scallop on Potato Chips is pure class! And you certainly can't go wrong with a Cheese Souffle!
Stephanie and I both have a lot of great cookbooks, and we sorted and reorganized our shelves last night to pick and choose some recipes and browse what we have.
These show illustrations from Peter Boizot's "Pizza Express Cookbook" , dated 1976. Around this time I bought it as a present for my mother, who was a keen cook. When she died in 1983 I kept the book as a keepsake. For many years now I've been making pizzas regularly, usually on Sunday nights, with this as an inspiration.
Incidentally, I discovered the Pizza Express chain in the late 70s - and have gone back several times in several cities - most recently the one on Bankside in London, on my 59th birthday, and think they make some of the best pizzas anywhere!

Went to Rebecca Mead's event at Community Bookstore, and was kept company by this guy. We had our quarrels, but it was a good friendship.
These gift tags are made from repurposed manila file folders that have been collaged on one side with pages from the meat chapter of a vintage cookbook. The photos and recipes are classic retro and you'll receive a nice assortment of both. I enjoy seeking out old cookbooks at book sales and yard sales and love using them to make these tags!
They measure 2.75" x 1.75" and have a piece of bakers twine attached. Your tags will be packaged in a cello bag as shown in the last picture.
Great gift for people who love to bake or use them for gifts or party favors!
