Officer and Naval Cadets from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) competed at the annual Sandhurst Competition at the United States Military Academy (USMA) - Westpoint. This year they competed against forty-eight teams from the United States and from around the world. With all of their hard work, dedication and teamwork, our Officer/Naval cadets placed ninth overall and second internationally. USMA - Westpoint, Highland Falls, New York on April 29, 2023.

Six teams of Maryland Park Service lifeguards test their skills in annual competition
The setup shown was used to test the feasibility of using high power LEDs in flow visualisation. Recent advances in LED technology has resulted in devices capable of producing light intensities similar to lasers. Studies have shown that this technology can be used to illuminate structures in water flows, but this was the first time LEDs had been used to visualise flows in air. A small scale wind tunnel with turning vanes located at the inlet was used to create a vortical flow. A smoke machine was used to provide the seeder particles and an arrangement of optical lenses was used to focus the light from the LEDs into a thin sheet, approximately 1mm thick. By illuminating the flow for very short durations the structures within the flow could be recorded. The image shown was recorded using a light pulse duration and exposure time of 8ms. The system was developed to provide a fast and reliable means of visualising free stream flows, which is very useful for building a better understanding of a flow and hopefully aiding future developments.
