The Scandinavian finals of the First Lego league was held at Equinor’s offices at Fornebu in Oslo, Norway.

The First Lego league competition has three main parts: The project, where the teams define a question and try to provide a solution to a problem that arises from researching the question.

The teams develop their solution into a commercial product for the marketing part of the competition. On the day of the competition, the teams present their project, solution and marketing strategy to a group of judges, at their own stand with printed materials.

In the technology part of the competition, the teams design, build, program and train with their own Lego robot. On competition day, the teams compete with their robots in a timed obstacle course.

First Lego league is a world-wide competition in technology, innovation and marketing for ages 10 to 16, with a junior competition for ages 6 to 9.

This year it is being held in 88 countries with around 280 000 participants, many in Europe. ESA sponsors the European competitions, as the themes are “Into Orbit” for the main competition and “Mission Moon” for the junior participants.

The Scandinavian competition saw 900 teams go head to head at events held locally on 10 November.

The winners of these events traveled to Oslo for the Scandinavian finals on 1 December 2018.

OsmoBlue has won the €40.000 first prize in the European finals of Climate-KIC’s 2013 Venture Competition today (22 October).

A Dutch and a UK company were awarded €20.000 each in a joint second prize as an Italian start-up picked up the audience award.

Switzerland-based OsmoBlue pitched a sustainable and profitable technology for recycling low-temperature waste heat. OsmoBlue’s patented technology converts low-temperature heat, as low as 30°C, into electricity. The system is scalable and can produce hundreds of kW to tens of MW of electricity.

The prizes were awarded after a pitching session at Climate-KIC’s annual Innovation Festival which is being held in Wroclaw, Poland this week. A total of 13 start-ups were judged by a panel of investors and representatives from industry as well as the hundreds of climate innovators in the audience who voted for their favorite start-up by sending a text message.
