Description: The Plumed Whistling-Duck is one of two whistling or tree ducks found in Australia. It is a tall, long necked duck, with very prominent long lanceolate off-white plumes edged in black along the flanks. The face and foreneck are light, the crown and hind neck are pale brown and the brown feathers of the upper back are edged buff. The breast is pale chestnut, finely barred in black. The bill is mottled pink and grey and the legs and feet are pink. It is also known as Grass Whistle Duck, Eyton's Plumed, Red-legged or Whistling Tree-duck, Grass, Grey or Red-legged Whistler, and the Monkey Duck.

Similar species: The related Wandering Whistling-Duck, Dendocygna arcuata, is similar to the Plumed Whistling-Duck, though it has darker body plumage and shorter flank plumes. Wandering Whistling-Ducks are more often found on water.

Distribution: The Plumed Whistling-Duck is mainly found in the northern and eastern tropics of Australia, it also extends southwards to New South Wales in the east but does not come far south of the Kimberleys in the west.

Habitat: During the day the Plumed Whistling-Duck congregates in large numbers with other waterfowl, on the margins of lagoons, swamps and mangrove creeks, for preening and sleeping. At night they fly out, often quite long distances, to feed on grasslands.

Seasonal movements: In the breeding season the Plumed Whistling-Duck leaves the water and nests on the grassy plains.

Feeding: Plumed Whistling-Ducks graze on tropical grasses. They pluck grass (like a goose) and also take food from the water by dabbling from the surface.

Breeding: Breeding for the Plumed Whistling-Duck begins in the tropical Wet Season. The nest is a scrape in the ground, sparsely lined with grass, usually under shelter of a bush or other vegetation. The Plumed Whistling-Duck is monogamous, and pair-bonds are probably life-long. Both sexes share the duties of incubation, with the changeover taking place in the evening, and brood the young.

Calls: Loud sibilant whistle

Minimum Size: 40cm

Maximum Size: 60cm

Average size: 50cm

Average weight: 1 000g

Breeding season: Variable, usually during tropical Wet Season.

Clutch Size: 8 to 14

Incubation: 30 days

Just a reminder to you all that sexists jokes or comments deter women from wanting to join the LEGO Community. There are countless times that I have wanted to sell my collection and move on to something else because of the prejudice remarks thrown my way. I know that most mean well and see me as a friend and believe that we are close enough to make it a joke, but it hurts in any way said. Theres a reason why this hobby is dominated by men, and its because its already intimidating to join such a highly creative and talented community of builders - add ostracizing to that uncomfortable intimidating feeling and we push women from expressing themselves with this medium. Its not okay, its not funny or fun. Separate your bricks, not gender! :)

Eastern Great Egret

Scientific Name: Ardea modesta

Description: The Great Egret's overall plumage is white, and, for most of the year, when not breeding, the bill and facial skin are yellow. The feet are dark olive-grey or sooty black, as are the legs. During the breeding season, the bill turns mostly black and the facial skin becomes green. Also at this time, long hair-like feathers (nuptial plumes) hang across the lower back, and the legs become pinkish-yellow at the top. Young Great Egrets are similar to the adults, but have a blackish tip to the bill.

Similar species: The Great Egret can be confused with other white egrets found in Australia. It can be distinguished by the length of its neck, which is greater than the length of its body (and with a noticeable kink two-thirds of the way up), a dark line extending from the base of the bill to behind the eye and the overall larger size.

Distribution: Great Egrets occur throughout most of the world. They are common throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.

Habitat: Great Egrets prefer shallow water, particularly when flowing, but may be seen on any watered area, including damp grasslands. Great Egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks, often with other egret species, and roost at night in groups.

Feeding: The Great Egret usually feeds alone. It feeds on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and occasionally other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet. The Great Egret usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. Birds have also been seen taking prey while in flight.

Breeding: The Great Egret breeds in colonies, and often in association with cormorants, ibises and other egrets. Both sexes construct the nest, which is a large platform of sticks, placed in a tree over the water. The previous years' nest may often be re-used. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young (usually two or three).

Minimum Size: 70cm

Maximum Size: 90cm

Average size: 80cm

Breeding season: October to December in the south; March to May in the north.

Clutch Size: 2 to 6

Incubation: 28 days

Nestling Period: 40 days

Chestnut-breasted Mannikin

Scientific Name: Lonchura castaneothorax

Description: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is a thick-set brown finch with a grey crown, black face and a heavy grey bill. It has a chestnut brown breast divided from white underparts by a black bar. The rump and tail are golden orange, with a black undertail. Females are paler than males and young birds are uniformly olive-brown above, pale below with a brown-buff chest and no black face or chest bar. Like other finches, this species is a very social bird and is most often seen in flocks.

Similar species: The related Yellow-rumped Mannikin, L. flaviprymna, which lacks the black face and chest bar, can interbreed with the Chestnut-breasted Mannikin and produce intermediate forms.

Distribution: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is found across northern and eastern coastal Australia, from the Kimberley region, Northern Territory, to the Shoalhaven River, New South Wales. It is also found in New Guinea.

Habitat: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is found in reed beds, long grasses, swamps and mangroves.

Seasonal movements: Locally nomadic, especially in the north. Can form flocks of several hundred birds.

Feeding: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin feeds on grass seeds, usually on the stalk rather than from the ground. It will also eat winged termites at the beginning of breeding season.

Breeding: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin nests in colonies, with the nests close together in grass clumps, sugar cane or reeds, less than 2 m from the ground. The rounded nest is made from green or dried grass blades and is lined with fine grasses. It lacks an entrance tunnel but the entrance may have a hood. Both parents build the nest, incubate the eggs and feed the young, but only the female stays in the nest overnight.

Calls: Bell-like or drawn-out: 'teet'.

Minimum Size: 10cm

Maximum Size: 12cm

Average size: 11cm

Average weight: 14g

Breeding season: Spring and autumn in south; with rains in north

Clutch Size: 4 to 6 eggs

Incubation: 13 days

Nestling Period: 22 days
