Jason De Caires Taylor named this sculpture Vicissitudes, commenting on the future trajectories of these children.

This sculpture was seen in the Molinere Beausejour Marine Protected Area, Grenada. This was the first of the underwater sculpture parks created by Taylor, who has more than 1,200 underwater sculptures in Australia, UK, Cyprus, France, Maldives, Indonesia, Mexico and Bahamas.

The sculpture park in Grenada was founded in 2006 and Vicissitudes was added in 2007. Initially, Vicissitudes was intended to be the community of children holding hands and looking toward their futures. But as the currents modified these sculptures, some had to be propped up, and these were tied together for stability. Many people (including me) interpreted the ties as manacles, and the sculpture a reminder of slavery in the history of Grenada.

Taylor fully intended that his sculptures be colonized by the species looking for a place to live on a healthy marine surfaces.

Many of you have heard me comment that after the heart attack and cardiac arrest, I'm restricted to a daily walk to our letterbox until surgery occurs.

I will get to comments on my contacts' photos tomorrow. Sorry - been one of those days, today!

This is my favourite. Between the mangroves, in the background, is the extension of the beach as it curls around to Cape Flattery. That place is where the very white, fine and pure silica sands come from; the purest in the world. Not sure what the silica is used for - glass" computer chips? ??

Where I am standing (about 20 metres from where I left the vehicle), is where one arrives at the beach with the coloured sands ahead and to the left. We are now at what is known as Cape Bedford. This beach will curl all the way to Cape Flattery. This area is deemed to be Aboriginal land (Hopevale - a former Lutheran mission) because it was given to them. This particular area at the coloured sands is called "Elim" (biblical name - trees/rest/oasis/retreat)

The beach is a bit yellowy in colour but traces of colours are found as they work their way down from the sands. I considered it a pretty area and would liked to have been there longer but time was tight. I must have walked 2 km along and gone up a sand valley as well for some wonderful photos. The four images this time are looking more to the right (2 of them), and more directly at the sands (2 of them) than the last lot, and the first one is my favourite of the 8 so far posted. An old mangrove branch appears in some of these photos.

Hello friend's have a beautiful week ahead.

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper

Scientific Name: Calidris acuminata

The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is the most dinky-di of all migratory shorebirds that visit Australia, carrying the rich ochre colours of the red centre in the plumage on its head and back. It is also finely tuned into Australiaâs boom-and-bust ecology â in years of inland floods, few birds travel to our southern shores, preferring, instead, to gorge on the banks of inland floodplains, such as the Diamantina. This way, they save themselves travelling thousands of kilometres. They are the international guest star in the festival of the living desert.

Description: The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is a medium sized wader with a straight black bill that has an olive-grey base. It has a chestnut crown and nape, a white eyebrow, and reddish brown upperparts, with each feather having a black centre. The rump and tail are black, with white outer margins visible in flight. The wings have an indistinct white bar. The breast and flanks are white, streaked and speckled black, with a reddish brown tinge on the chest, grading into a white belly and undertail. The legs are olive. This species is commonly seen with other waders during its migration from northern breeding grounds.

Similar Species: The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is very similar to most other sandpipers, especially the Pectoral Sandpiper, C. melanotos, but may be distinguished from this species by having no clearcut division between the breast and belly markings, olive (rather than yellow) legs, and a chestnut (rather than dark) head.

Distribution: The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is a summer migrant from Arctic Siberia, being found on wetlands throughout Australia. It is also found in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and New Zealand. It is a vagrant to India, Europe, western North America, Fiji and other parts of the central Pacific region.

Habitat: The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper prefers the grassy edges of shallow inland freshwater wetlands. It is also found around sewage farms, flooded fields, mudflats, mangroves, rocky shores and beaches. Its breeding habitat in Siberia is the peat-hummock and lichen tundra of the high Arctic.

Feeding: The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper feeds on aquatic insects and their larvae, as well as worms, molluscs, crustaceans and sometimes, seeds. It is often found in large flocks, often with other waders, foraging in shallow waters.

Breeding: The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper breeds in the short Siberian summer (June to August). Its nest is a well-hidden shallow hollow on the ground, lined with grass and leaves. The female incubates the eggs and raises the young alone.

There is a large herd of about 50 or more deer on the Lagoon Creek reserve.

Deer – Chital

Scientific name - Cervus axis

Other common names - Chital deer, Axis deer, Indian spotted deer.

Origin - India, Nepal and Sri Lanka

Distinctive characteristics - White throat patch and white spots. Dark dorsal stripe and band over muzzle. Noticeably long tail compared with other deer species.

Identification - Feral chital deer are a small-medium sized species. Their coat colour is variable, but is often dark to rusty red with uniformly marked white spots in lines along the body. They have a distinctive white throat patch and a dark muzzle. The coat colour of the inner legs and underside of the belly is white-beige. This species is often found in medium to large groups. Mature males have antlers that are smooth and slender with usually three tines on each, though the number of tines is influenced by animal condition. Antlers may be 70-89 cm in length. Males are larger in size and weight (90 cm and 85 kg) than females (80cm and 60 kg). Chital have a distinctive high-pitch alarm call when disturbed. Scats are small cylindrical pellets sometimes with an indentation at one end.

History and Biology - Chital deer were initially introduced to Australia from Sri Lanka and India in 1802 but did not survive. They were later successfully released into Queensland in the 1860's. Chital deer are herbivores that browse on a variety of grasses, fruit and leaves. They are gregarious and can form groups of more than 100 individuals. They do not have a defined breeding season, and are capable of producing three offspring in two years. Chital deer will eat their shed antlers if their diet is lacking the vitamins and minerals. Females will separate from the herd during birthing and rearing of young.

Distribution - Feral chital deer occur in many areas throughout Queensland, small areas in NSW, Victoria and the south-east of South Australia. They are absent from other regions.

Habitat - They can be found in a variety of habitats, including open grasslands, open and closed woodlands, thick forests and heavily timbered farmland.

Damage - Feral chital deer are a growing pest threat. They can cause significant browsing damage to native vegetation, damage sensitive habitats and compete with livestock for pasture. They can damage forestry plantations and ornamental gardens. They are not often found in close proximity to humans but they do present a serious motorway hazard. Feral chital deer may carry and spread livestock diseases that can cause production losses and increased management costs.
