December 24, 2018 - The Jaffa Clock Tower located in the center of Jaffa's town square. It dates from the early 1900's and was built by the Ottoman Empire to commemorate the silver jubilee of the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abudl Hamid II.
This is a reconstruction based on remains at All Saints' Church, Highcross Street, Leicester, supplemented by documentary evidence. The original carved wood quarter-jacks disappeared many years ago, but traditionally dates back to the early 17th Century. In Jacobean costume, they represented heralds.
Like it's predecessor, this clock operates every quarter-hour, and chimes the hour on the hour.
Constructed with aid of National Lottery funds and installed in October 1999 to mark the beginning of a new millennium.
I saw this while I was cycling through the city. No idea if it's actually a moving clock or a stationary object, but it looked interesting.
I knew that Rachel, who's a wee bit fond of clockwork, would love to see this running... so I shot some video, even thought it wasn't really on my agenda.
I didn't get to the clock till the second day of shooting - due to large groups coming by we had to do all the shots of the star attraction - the P51 model - on Friday. Had I done my homework, I would have setup the 40D to take a time lapse video of this clock running. Doh!
The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower in the centre of Bruges. One of the city's most prominent symbols, the belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives, and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other dangers.
The belfry was added to the market square around 1240, when Bruges was an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry. After a devastating fire in 1280, the tower was largely rebuilt. The city archives, however, were forever lost to the flames.
The octagonal upper stage of the belfry was added between 1483 and 1487, and capped with a wooden spire bearing an image of Saint Michael, banner in hand and dragon underfoot. The spire did not last long: a lightning strike in 1493 reduced it to ashes, and destroyed the bells as well. A wooden spire crowned the summit again for some two-and-a-half centuries, before it, too, fell victim to flames in 1741. The spire was never replaced again, but an openwork stone parapet in Gothic Revival style was added to the rooftop in 1822.

My favourite diner (By the Bluffs) used to be a Bank of Montreal; when you enter the restaurant this is still by the front door. The Bluffs is located on Kingston Road, just east of McCowan ... you should go there!
