I could get away with getting on this train now, but it was pushing it a bit in 1984 to be on a Portsmouth Harbour - Newcastle SAGA charter. 37 271 was the engine, which worked from New St to Derby, where it failed moments after this photo was taken.

The Norfolk and Western Class J 611 is the pinnacle of steam locomotive technology in the world in many ways. Built at the end of the era of steam power there were 14 Class J's produced from 1941 through 1950. The 611, as with all Class J locomotives, was produced in the Norfolk and Western shops in Roanoke, Virginia. The shops there turned out a 500,000 pound monster, producing over 5,000 horsepower at the drawbar. This represents a greater tractive effort than any locomotive before or since. The Class J rides on a massive single piece cast steel frame underpinning the entire locomotive. With the close tolerances, rigidity, and space for a massive fire box this frame allowed the top speed was limited "by the nerves of the engineer". On a controlled test track pulling 1,050 tons the Class J recorded a top speed of 111mph, with about 100mph being common in actual use. 611 began her service hauling passenger trains in May of 1950, and was retired from regular service in October, 1959. Today she is regularly on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, but as seen here crossing the Radian River does come out to pull the occasional excursion train.

Having photographed the newly named (that morning) 321 342 arriving at Shenfield on the down Braintree service I felt it was worth waiting for its return at Ingatestone Hall on the rear of the return 16.00 up. Alas the sun came out a fraction too late, although the half sun did allow for some interesting sky detail in this shot of the NXEA liveried Dusty Bin leading the 12 car set.
