Stored in the former carriage shed at Llandudno Junction, Class 151 Metro-Cammell 3-car Prototype set 151 003 still displayed Derby on the blind.
The two British Rail Class 151 aluminium alloy bodied DMUs were in service on Regional Railways between 1985-89 for evaluation but the production contract was awarded for the BREL-built Class 150 units and they were withdrawn. Having been stored at Llandudno Junction they were acquired by Railtest (later Serco Railtest) for possible use but remained stored at Derby until purchased by Endeavour Rail in 2000. Their proposed refurbishment and use for hire did not progress and both units were scrapped in 2004.

With 56D Mirfield shed to the side to remind us steam had only just come to an end, Crewe-based English Electric Type 4 D212 Aureol (later 40012) speeds straight towards the camera with this mixed freight bound for the Calder Valley line and Lancashire. On a dull 2nd September 1985, in the period where loco-hauled DMU substitutes were quite common in the North East, 2J27, the 11:55 Newcastle to Sunderland seen at Park Lane, Gateshead was unusually in the hands of 37063, these workings were mainly Class 47 worked.
NSWRTM operated an Australia Day outing to Newcastle with 44211 and 4520. Minutes from departure the train is captured waiting in Platform 1 at Central. The fare booked on this tour for myself and good friends was a ticket in the Lounge Class, GMS carriage. A terrific experience and well recommended. 26/01/2014.
The British Rail Class 108 two car, diesel multiple units (DMU's) were built by BR Derby from 1958 to 1961. In all, 333 vehicles were produced in various formats.
The units stayed in regular service until 1990, when they began to be withdrawn from traffic, to be replaced on regional services by new "Sprinter" units, or by "Turbo" units on services around London.
The final Class 108 units lasted in traffic until October 1993, although many saw further use in departmental service, as sandite or route-learner units. Good condition on withdrawal and a lack of asbestos has ensured that many of this class are now used on preserved railway lines.
This unit appears to be heading for Heaton depot in Newcastle, hauled by a Class 37 locomotive in the grey and yellow Departmental livery.

The class 506's had exclusively worked the Manchester Piccadilly-Hadfield via Glossop services since June 1954, their last day of operation was approaching fast on the 7th December 1984 only a fortnight way.

Despite seeing almost all of the trans-Pennines DMUs, sadly I only have one photograph of them in operation, and this is a rather poor quality one as it was before I got my first decent camera. Class 124 DMC number E51967 leads a four car set with a westbound service at Doncaster in the early 1980s.
After the various EMD bulldogs and ALCos the most iconic of Australian built diesels were the ten C class locomotives built for the Victorian Railways (later V/Line) in 1977/78 and powered by an EMD 645E3 rated at 3000hp.
They spent most of their first two decades on the broad gauge track (5'3") between Melbourne and Adelaide hauling interstate freights, although a couple could often be found on the standard gauge north to Sydney.
In 1995 ownership passed from V/Line to the federally owned National Rail Corporation and for another three years they continued mainly working on the Adelaide corridor which had been converted to standard gauge the same year.
The C class were placed in storage (apart from two that were resurrected for terminal shunting) for several years until sold to niche private operator Silverton Rail who progressively reactivated them from 2003 onwards, with most also receiving a substantial refurbishment and upgrade in the process.
There have been several changes of ownership since then and in April this year most were back in storage again with no regular work.
To the rescue came Southern Shorthaul Railroad who purchased six from loco hire company Engenco, with SSR quickly finding work for them on short-term coal and grain haulage contracts.
Six months ago we thought it was all over for the mighty C class, yet just a few days ago I was lucky enough to watch C506/C507 pass through Gulgong, NSW, with #8478 loaded grain bound for Port Waratah (Newcastle).
