This is my second entry in the new “Large Format” category. Scenes like this are part of the reason I was drawn to shooting Large Format photos. While hiking up here back in July it was really a breathtaking scene, though it’s a bit ‘busy’ as well with lots of fine details (the trees, the mountains, the wildflowers barely visible on the default Flickr resolution, the river rocks, etc) - in a scene like this that sometimes make me almost disappointed in advance of shooting the scene digitally (also lost by viewing a 500x400 pixel version on Flickr). With large format there’s at least the option to scan this really high-res to do a large reproduction.
This was a sort of ‘medium-resolution’ scan done on an Imacon 949 scanner through Calypso Inc. It worked out to be about a 26MP 16bit scan so plenty of detail was captured, far more that I could have captured on my 6MP D40 (not to disparage the D40 – I love that camera!), though less than on my previous large format upload, scanned to 70+MP on a drum scanner.
But enough about the technical stuff, more about the scene.
This is, I believe, technically called Unicorn Creek. Up high off Tioga Pass in Yosemite there are a number of stunningly beautiful alpine lakes, and this location was near the end of the hike up the Elizabeth Lake which lies at the base of Unicorn Peak (hence Unicorn Creek). Elizabeth Lake was lovely as well, but somehow much more overcast by the time we reached it, and it seemed to be less ‘photogenic’ at the time. The hike itself was basically a constant incline from the trailhead until you reached the lake itself miles later, not too bad in and of itself, but a tiring hike after several days of long, uphill, high-elevation hikes (this is somewhere up in the 10,000ft elevation range itself). The trail mostly follows the creek itself, but this bend in the creek with a clearing seemed to be the best place to actually see the creek itself.
My wife and I both had different ideas of how this scene looked best. I shot this with a circular polarizer and it was an interesting example of how it could be used differently. In this shot (as my wife preferred) the clouds have much better definition and the reflections on the water are minimized allowing you to see more of the red rocks underneath. At the time I preferred the polarizer rotated 90 degrees, sacrificing definition in the clouds but emphasizing the sky’s bright blue reflection all along the river. In the end I really prefer this version.
I’m not exactly sure which peaks those are in the background, they’re basically NNW of Unicorn Peak – if anyone knows for sure, please let me know.
And, as I always feel inclined to say, if you’ve never been to Yosemite (especially if you have the means) – GO! Go to Yosemite! Go now! It’s unbelievable – it’s gorgeous, it’s humbling, it’s fun. It sold me on the whole National Parks system (I even got ‘support our national parks license plates’), convinced me how much I love the outdoors, and showed me a world of photographic potential I couldn’t have imagined. Go to Yosemite!

Uploaded in the ProPhoto RGB color space, so hopefully if you're using a color-managed browser (and especially if using a wide-gamut monitor), the color should be accurate and really pop. (If not, it might look a bit off.)

Another beautiful morning on San Francisco Bay. The fourth of five tower sections was installed yesterday, ahead of schedule. A saddle to carry the cables, called a grillage, is the last remaining piece, expected to be installed by early April.
Out this morning with Flickr friend Alan Grinberg.

Some photo pros advise against using polarizing filters with wide angle lenses but I like the effect on this and on the last one. It cuts the surface glare on the water too.
It is hard to tell how exposure and brightness look when working on this laptop. Feedback is appreciated, good and bad. Thanks!

The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 for Sony FE may be a game changer for a lot of people, offering up really fantastic image quality, quality AF in most situations, and a very nice build for an extremely good price. This is the kind of lens that could entice people over to Sony, and I'm personally a fan of the lens. If you want to know more about this exciting new lens, check out my coverage through the links below:

This is one from several weeks ago - before all the grass around here had turned completely golden. I guess I haven't posted it because I feel a bit ambivalent about it for some reason, although there are things I like about it.
I've been waking up early lately and there has been some wonderful sunrise clouds and light around here but I've not been able to get out and capture it - which annoys me to no end. I'm REALLY looking forward to this photography road trip coming up soon with Skylar. I really need to get back out there!
Have a great weekend, everyone!

When the Swissotel The Stamford opened in 1986, it was the world's tallest hotel building. The restaurants at the top have insanely cool views, but on a rainy day, they are often enveloped in a fog of clouds. Today, after a short downpour, the sun shone through the dispersing clouds with a lovely sunset-like yellow.
Designed by I.M. Pei, it's a 226m masterpiece where every room has an outward-facing balcony, and landscape photographers are known to have a staycation here to grab a beautiful sunset and sunrise overlooking one of Asia's most dynamic cities.
I shot this from the Helix Bridge next to the Marina Bay Sands, so the distance is around 1.5km, and the floodlight structure is halfway between and part of the Marina Bay floating platform. I love it in the frame because the floodlights are tall on their own, yet the hotel dwarfs it completely.

some evenings all the pieces come together to create epic sunsets. this evening it all came together and it was magical, unlike anything i’ve ever seen before. the sky lite up from yellow, to orange, to red, to pink – the mountains reflected a beautiful glow and my world just seemed to be at peace.✌️

Tonight's photos are similar with regard to a channel of water. One, a familiar scene in my photostream of the Chicago River cutting through the River North neighborhood and the second, a much smaller waterway running to a boil residing in the center of an adorned planter at the Chicago Botanic Gardens.
The "Shake A Leg" boat is actually a water taxi - sometimes you can get from one side of the city faster on one of these than you can in a regular street taxi. It certainly has better views.
For whatever reason, the Brown Line just stopped where you see it here for about a minute - plenty of time to get a good shot taken. Although, it would be pretty cool to take a shot from inside the train while stuck on top of the Wells Street Bridge!
Enjoy!
I had just exited Hunts Photo Video in Hadley ("We strive to treat you rudely!") where I had bought my first roll of Fuji Velvia 50 (which I have yet to use) when I saw this Jeep, parked at an odd angle. There were two sets of legs sticking out from it and ratchet-like noises emanating from it. I asked if I could take a picture of the Jeep and got a bemused "yes." 6/28/08 - 4:30PM.

A shot of Adelina Falls in the Blue Mountains. The heavy rains of the past few weeks have resulted in good flows over the falls in the area. Adelina Falls in Lawson, is part of a circuit of waterfalls in the area.

USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722), commissioned on March 10, 1969, was the eighth of twelve 378-foot Hamilton-class High Endurance cutters (WHECs) built by Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans, Louisiana. First homeported at Governors Island, New York, Morgenthau was active in the Vietnam War, conducting underway replenishment, naval gunfire support, and patrol duties off the coast of Vietnam until relieved by a 311' cutter in 1971. Her current motto, translated from latin, is "Pride of the Pacific". Morgenthau is currently homeported at Integrated Support Command Alameda, Coast Guard Island, Alameda, California.
In 1977, Morgenthau became the first cutter to have women permanently assigned. (Wiki)

I thought I was heading for Upper Bridal Veil yesterday afternoon. But since there is no trail to either one of the two falls, I ended up at Middle. I was exhausted after the walk back, so Upper will have to wait for another day.
This is a small waterfall just a little piece up the path from the sipsey picnic area! This was flowing great this day and i'm glad i was able to capture it! As far as i know there isn't a name for this falls. But it sure is pretty. I love the log down in front it really adds to the shot i think :) Hope you all have wonderful days!
- www.kevin-palmer.com - Trail 3 at Turkey Run State Park takes you up into Rocky Hollow to the Punch Bowl. Getting wet is unavoidable and sometimes there is very little room with people hiking both ways. There are very narrow stairs cut into the wall on the left.
Double rainbow forms on the backside flank of a severe thunderstorm moving through Coles County, Illinois viewed from just outside of Fairgrange. This storm at the time of capturing was producing hail in the northeast side of the county by Oakland and would move into the Paris in Edgar County area causing a little bit of ruckus and damage to siding on houses.
