18-200mm F3.5-5.6G DX IF-ED AF-S VR with Circular Polarizer

While out photography high contrast images of tree trunks agains the snow I couldn’t resist photographing this lovely isolated tree coated in hoar frost. I was looking uphill and had to actually tilt the camera to make the “horizon” level.

I shot two compositions: square with the tree centred in the frame; and a 16x9 horizontal with the horizon and tree aligned to the rule-of-thirds grid lines. Neither composition is very fancy, but they work, given the subject and the perspective.

I used a polarizer to darken the sky. The sun was almost perfectly 90° to the right so the polarizer effect was quite dramatic. Still, in Lightroom I darkened the sky even more with the B/W mix tool and added quite a bit of vignetting. I think to cool toning really adds the cold atmosphere too.

East Fork Magic

On the very first morning of my North Carolina trip this past fall, I headed up the mountain to one of my favorite spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway to hopefully catch a sweet sunrise with my girlfriend. I parked the Jeep at the East Fork Overlook while still dark and scouted around the area with my flashlight to find a nice spot to set up. The skies were mostly cloudy so the chances of catching a great sunrise were pretty much a coin flip. You can sit for an hour or two and not catch a glimpse of the sun at all. On the other hand the sun can come up and at just the right moment, find a perfectly placed hole in the thick clouds, making magic unfold right before your eyes. Fortunately this was the case on that glorious Monday morning high up in the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you follow me on Flickr and do the Facebook thing, then check out my Facebook photography page and give it a "Like".

Trying out my newly purchased B+W 10-stop ND filter. The filter adds a very warm hue to photos so I had to do some color correcting in Lightroom.

Beautiful downtown Reidsville North Carolina, love to photograph here

We stayed at the west entrance to Yellowstone and got up at a reasonable time the next morning. We traveled in and at a spur of the moment notice I noticed a little gravel drive off to the left (south). I turned off on this one way path which traced along the Fire Hole river and came to these falls. Even though it was 7:30 in the morning, the area was still shaded in shadows. Using my circular polarizer, an aperture of f/29 and ISO 100 I was able to get 1 sec exposure times. The nice blurring of the water is the result. I'm uploading two versions. One with and one without a vignette to see what people like better. Personally, I'm liking the vignette one better..

a black and white conversion with a puddle reflection of Trump Tower in Chicago...

This is the exterior wall of a cafe in Navajo county that has been run continuously by one family serving Mexican and American food since 1943. Inside, the place is preserved (forgive its booth tears and broken jukebox) from a bygone era. It remains an unpretentious place to eat real good food, served by friendly genuine folks. We walked in at 11 AM and ordered stacks of hot cakes (pancakes), huevos rancheros and enchiladas. Their green and red chile sauces were equally flavourful and approaching 4,000 Scoville units, which is to say, mildly spicy. All food was made-to-order and tasty. Lard is not used to prepare the beans (thumbs up!) and servings were generous and fairly priced. I asked for permission to photograph while we were inside. The decor is filled with droll humor, southwestern charm and Americana that reminds that you are on the "Mother Road." Every booth came equipped with jocular, quickly-read paperbacks to pass the time while food was being prepared. We felt welcomed and had a genuine meal. Worth the stop in town when visiting Petrified Forest or passing through to/from Vegas. For those who can't get here, enjoy the dive on Route 66; check out the following three items in my Flickrstream!

I wanted to do something a little different with one of my Mexico shots out of the archive, so I put this together. If you are interested in my workflow, read on... First, I took three RAW exposures (+3,0,-3) and fed them into Photomatix Pro, where I did a light exposure fusion (I toned down highlights/shadows and aimed for a smooth combination with fairly low contrast). I then took the TIF file created and opened it in Photoshop CS5 (Lightroom is always my hub for my workflow). I sent the file into Alien Skin Exposure (a plug-in I heavily rely on for toning), and went for a warm low contrast look. The toned file was brought back into Photoshop. I then layered Kim Klassen's "Little Things" texture over the top with a Multiply blend mode. I added a layer mask and brushed down the texture effect a bit in the middle. I then added another texture layer (Kim Klassen's "Evolve") at low opacity (25%) and a Soft Light blend mode. I flattened the image, and then added an inch of canvas all around, choosing a neutral tone from the center of the image for color. This would help serve as my frame. I then put the image into OnOne PhotoFrame, where I chose the "Malvre Background". This covered everything, but the look was fine. I accepted this and brought it back into Photoshop, where I then masked off the effect from most of the image, but feathered it (125 pixels) for a smooth transition. I then added my signature...and this is the finished result. I add this info and the metadata info back in Lightroom. Now this sounds like a lot of work, but actually only represents about 15 minutes...for two reasons: 1) I am very familiar with the programs in the my workflow, so my time needed to do what I want is drastically reduced. 2) I have a high powered PC with 8 cores and 12GB of RAM (very important for photo work). My PC works fast, enabling me to work fast. Hope this little insight helps someone...

Technical info: Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 3 exposure fusion in Photomatix Pro, processed in Adobe Lightroom 4, toned in Alien Skin Exposure 4, Signature and texture layers added in Adobe Photoshop CS5

Much of Portugal's prominent figures in its imperial age are wonderfully sculpted here on this monument. Captured at sundown on an unseasonably warm fall day, the limestone turns into honey! The moon waxes and floats above ...

stopped briefly on our way down from climbing Castle Rock to admire these beautiful skies that were before us....i probably took more than a hundred frames just on this climb alone....the circular polarizers really did it's job well on this one giving this frame that deeper blue and making the clouds pop out more...pls. i’m forever grateful to Pacey, our first dog, a rescue from pinnellas county animal services in Florida – for all her unconditional love the 16 years we had the privilege to spend with her. she will forever be in my heart. last November i had the opportunity to put closure a loss that has had my heart broken for 4 years.

if you look into the photo you will see me standing on the beach alone, still for 283 seconds, spreading her ashes at sunset…. returning her to the state she came from and relieving myself of the guilt i felt for not being with with her when she passed (we were in Florida on vacation). i know she did it to protect me.

When you’re tired and you’re weary

And you have no strength to go on

Let me carry you home

When there’s no one to turn to

And all you’ve had faith in is gone

Let me carry you home

Just as a watch is made up of several different pieces, "framed and put together for a purpose," he reasoned, so too are natural objects-eyes, ears, wings, and bones-made up of parts that combine to serve a higher function. As the watch is the design of a watchmaker, nature is the product of a designing intelligence, or God. William Paley 1802.

219/366: Silverton Colorado – Off The Beaten Path

After eating an awesome lunch at the Brown Bear Cafe, I decided to wander around the parts of Silverton Colorado that are off the beaten path. The areas most “tourist” don’t go and I found Cement Creek, which runs through town. I pulled out my camera, tripod and Lee Filters Circular Polarizer and Big Stopper and captured the creek showing the water movement as it runs over the boulders and rocks, with what I believe, is Kendall Peak in the background. The sky was perfect, it was a windy day, as you can tell from the tree and bush movement in the photograph. They almost appear to be painting the area with a lush green smear.

The people in my town grow an ornamental tree called a Bradford Pear. When in full bloom, the dazzling white is glorious, but bloom only stays in "peak" for a couple of days. I took these 3/1/2011. By Sunday, these will be green. This is my last of this series for now. Thanks for looking.
