SANTA ELENA CANYON

We pulled up to the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park only to see cars parked at least a half mile back on the side of the road, in an undesignated parking area. We went into this adventure wanting to respect nature as much as possible, to leave it better than we found it – so parking in this area was not an option for us. I told Gwenn to go to the front… I knew if the canyon wanted us to photograph her and see her majestic beauty – we would find a proper parking spot… and she did… and I’m grateful.

It was afternoon when we arrived at the canyon. We had planned for morning, but got sidetracked with other alluring landscapes. We walked down to the riverbank and were in awe of the beauty before us… so majestic, grand, unique – sublime… unlike anything I’ve seen before. I took time to look around, take it in, breathe – and search for the perfect ‘spot’ to capture the essence of the location – the Santa Elena Canyon.

As I sat on the bank of the Rio Grande and observed people trying to cross barefoot, I was glad I brought my rain boots. I waded across to a dry area, where a family was enjoying the view, or in my case the ‘spot.’ I kindly asked to borrow their amazing view to photograph the artistry before us. They obliged.

To add some perspective, if you look about 1/3 of the way up, on the right side of the canyon, you can see people standing on the ledge of the overview. Enjoy!

A 3 stitch panoramic photo of downtown Pagosa Springs in Colorado taken this summer. Pagosa Springs is located on the San Juan River, which flows right though the center of town, allowing visitors and residents a fantastic time of tubing down the river or just cooling off on a hot summer day. Located towards the center of the photo is The Springs Resort which offers visitors 23 hot spring mineral pools terraced on the banks of the San Juan River.

355/366: Mountain Mist

The mountain mist fell towards my camera in this shot of Fourmile Falls in Pagosa Springs Colorado this past fall. It was a windy afternoon and the water was misting in all different directions even giving us a shower at one point. Luckily, I had my camera jacket on in order to protect my equipment.

Photo taken with my Nikon D810 and Lee Filters Big Stopper and CP Filters for an exposure time of 5 seconds at f/8.0, ISO 100 – 14mm.

Whew - I have to learn to ease off the accelerator with polarizing filters and be more subtle instead of using the hammer! The contrast is off the charts and it's a bit noisier than what I would have expected.

Idaho Falls is a great place to stop in on your way to the Grand Tetons or Yellowstone if you're flying into Salt Lake City. From my balcony at the Hilton Garden Inn, I got this morning shot of the Snake River with the Mormon Temple in the background. Not a bad site to wake up to!

I wouldn't call this HDR (I didn't like how the HDR came out), but it is a blend of two exposures. Mostly a lighter exposure with a little bit of a darker blended in near the sun where it got overexposed. With moving clouds and water, HDR can come out a little weird sometimes.

I was in San Diego for the first time in a couple years this past weekend, so I stopped by La Jolla to take a sunset shot of the always awe-inspiring Pacific Ocean. My main goal was to practice with my new Lee Filters. This is a single frame with a 3-stop hard GND filter and warming circular polarizer. I have been playing around with blending exposures with luminosity masks and other advanced masking techniques for landscapes, but I have decided I would rather get it right "in camera," because the results always seem to come out cleaner than blending multiple exposures. Of course, that's only possible with relatively flat horizons like this.

shot this one on a very beautiful and delightful afternoon by Lily Lake with those huge summer clouds reflecting wonderfully on a still Lily Lake....just a nice summer scene to remind me that spring will come soon and these cold, frigid days and nights will soon be over....in about 3 more months ;-( ...... pls. - www.kevin-palmer.com - After a much longer than expected hike, I made it to the 3,192 foot summit of Coyote Mountain just before 10AM. There was an abundance of cholla cactus and agave plants at the top, both of which stabbed me in the legs. Before leaving I found the summit register which contained a Sony camera lens for some reason and a log which was last signed over 14 months ago. In retrospect I should not have pushed on to the summit. I had a steep 5 mile descent ahead of me while temperatures soared to the upper 90's with no shade available. I didn't bring nearly enough water and was on the verge of heat stroke by the time I made it back to my car.

Took a drive down I-81 South to Locust Lake State Park and Tuscarora State Park.

Since we didn't get a whole lot from those stops, we went back up our way and stopped at Frances Slocum State Park also.
