Playing around with one of my new toys - a circular polarizer. I love how even at high noon, this nifty little gadget is able to give the sky it's natural color without any post processing. In this case, at an elevation of 8000 feet where the atmosphere is thinner, the filter went beyond it's intended purpose to create an effect that I'm fascinated with - a very dark sky that contrasts nicely with the mountain peaks.

This is an image from the doors-off helicopter tour we were able to take while on our honeymoon. I feel like this is a good image to start off my Kauai series because it shows all the wonderful aspects of that island, dramatic green mountains, fresh cool rivers and huge empty beaches.

The doors-off helicopter ride was a treat! I've never done any aerial photography and it was hard to get going, but this shot is from near the end of the trip when I was finally getting my bearings and could manage to compose images.

a very cloudy day in Chicago, captured this during brunch at the Signature Room in John Hancock...great food and a great view...

Puu o Kila Lookout, Kokee State Park, Kauai. Thanks to Steve Berg for the suggestion to photograph here!

The big falls at Burgess Falls State Park are the last of 3 sets of falls in less than a mile on the Falling Water River. At 136 ft. high they are truly a sight to behold in person. This was taken from the overlook. There is a trail leading down to the base of the falls if you want to experience them up close and personal......which I did.

What a sight! The western span of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco. Please view large.

Luna Park - at St Kilda in Melbourne.

This is a small amusement park... with a number of rides... (roller coaster, ferris wheel, bumper cars, etc...) It is only open on weekends and public holidays.

One time... my company hired this place for our Christmas Party... so only employees of my company can use it! It was soooooooooooo awesome!

Although I have seen kids who did not wanna go inside after seeing the entrance... hahaha

Have a great weekend everyone!!! Weekends are no-Flickr weekends for me! So I'll see you all next week!

I will try and visit as much of you as I can tonight... :)

the skyline looking really splendid one very nice morning from last month...again comped this shot by placing the camera on the granite bench, framed the shot and clicked for the capture...i just liked the shape of the tree so i included it in this frame as it just adds a little bit more interest to the whole scene...pls. this scene was shot last spring season in Wright Woods Forest Preserve in Vernon Hills, illinois...used the landscape mode in this shot with a circular polarizer attached to my lens to bring out the greens, reduce the glare and reflections of the high noon sun in order to get a clearer reflection of the trees on the water surface....pls. Another from the November 6, 2010 flight with Capt. Chris Saulit in a super clean Cessna 172.

Looking south over central Oakland with Broadway and Telegraph Avenues forming a V into the downtown area. Oakland airport in the upper left, Alameda Island above the Estuary across the top. Lake Merritt is to the left of center and the foreground includes Kaiser and Summit Hospitals, Mosswood Park and the MacArthur freeway Maze. Driving the freeway to the right takes you across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco. In the distance ships can be seen anchored in San Francisco Bay.

Update May 2021:

The city is considering tearing down Highway 980 which runs north and south (up and down in this image) and replacing it with a boulevard in an attempt to re-connect cut off neighborhoods in West Oakland.

This morning I'm returning to the beach and a world that looks a lot less "winter-just-left-but-spring-isn't-here" like my current world looks outside. I loved the rich colors of the warm morning sun reflecting off the hotel/condo towers along the Strand in Myrtle Beach and the still-cool tones in the sky as night (and winter) burns off. My review coverage of the Fujinon XF 16-5mm F2.8 that I used for this shot can be seen here:

Is any light more spellbinding than the kind that bursts through the dark clouds? It has a unique quality, power, that banishes gloominess. P.S. Yes, I had to stand in a river holding an expensive camera to take this shot :)

These buildings are located along the Trans Canada #1 highway between Summerside and Charlottetown. They sit prominently on the side of a hill and every time I pass them, I regret not seeing them in time to stop and take a photograph. Today (November 4th, 2024), I saw them in time to stop ang get the image I was after. Prince Edward Island offers many such scenes with similar buildings but each offers its own unique characteristics and qualities.

The famous Gay Head cliffs. A very 19-century name. At some point when I wasn't looking, they renamed the town Aquinnah, but apparently the cliffs kept their old moniker. Back in 2000, I talked to one of the Native Americans who lived in Aquinnah. She still called it "Gay Head" but said it as one one "gayhead." Made with one raw exposure in Photomatix, and claned up in Photoshop.

Yosemite has hidden gems located everywhere. When I woke up for sunrise during my second day in the park, there were clear blue skies. I knew right then that the grand scale Yosemite shots were out of the question. So instead, I did a hike up to Lower Yosemite Falls with the focus of searching for some of these gems. I had the whole area to myself as the rising sun started to illuminate the granite cliffs of the lower falls. With temperatures in the teens, the spray from the falls was freezing as soon as it hit the cold air, forming an ice crystal spray. As soon as the reflected light from the cliffs started to light up the spray, it formed these great rainbow swirls.

Shot in RAW this morning just down from Wollongong Lighthouse.

The early morning colour was spectacular. I've helped it along a bit here but it sure was pretty. This is shot through my new Singh-Ray filters a Circular Polarizer and a three stop reverse Grad.

Hope you enjoy these golden moments ;-)

for those of you who have seen the second installment of Transformers the movie, this particular setting might seem very familiar as this is where they shot some of the coolest scenes and action sequences ever...they totally destroyed the Loop in the movie but glad to say that them folks from Hollywood really clean up pretty well after their mess...pls. the Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, Chicago is an awesome spot to view the city skyline even on times when the fountain is turned off...the still water inside the fountain basin offers some really nice reflections of the towering skyscrapers...

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the River Gorge, Fairy Falls is one amazing display of nature. Though it takes quite a steep hike to get there, it is well worth it.

While out photography high contrast images of tree trunks agains the snow I couldn’t resist photographing this lovely isolated tree coated in hoar frost. I was looking uphill and had to actually tilt the camera to make the “horizon” level.

I shot two compositions: square with the tree centred in the frame; and a 16x9 horizontal with the horizon and tree aligned to the rule-of-thirds grid lines. Neither composition is very fancy, but they work, given the subject and the perspective.

I used a polarizer to darken the sky. The sun was almost perfectly 90° to the right so the polarizer effect was quite dramatic. Still, in Lightroom I darkened the sky even more with the B/W mix tool and added quite a bit of vignetting. I think to cool toning really adds the cold atmosphere too.
