some residual fall colors that withstood the windstorm of 2010 a few weeks back show off it's splendor at the Chicago Botanic Gardens...shot this with my 35mm 1.8 prime lens and also used a 52mm Tristar Optics Circular Polarizer Filter to achieve such saturated colors in this image....the reflection on the very glass like lake was a huge bonus.....pls. View Large on Black -- The Star Barn is a large highly distinctive Gothic Revival style barn, built in 1872 by Civil War financier John Motter. It has louvered stars on all four sides and on surrounding matching outbuildings. Not only do these stars provide its uniqueness, they also serve a purpose to help circulate the air inside the barn.

When the barn was built, landowners dreamed of a bright future for agriculture. The period following the Civil War marked the beginning of a great era of restoration throughout our country. The stars stood for hope and good fortune for the farm and land. It truly was a new beginning.

Unfortunately, during the last 25-30 years or so, the barn has greatly deteriorated due to age, neglect and the elements. Being situated next to a busy state highway doesn't help the structures either.

However, this barn still has a bright future ahead of it, due to the efforts of Agrarian Country, a non-profit organization. This organization has undertaken the process and responsibility for a major restoration project that will not only preserve the barn, but turn it into an agricultural use that the public can enjoy for years to come. The latest news is that the barn complex is scheduled to be relocated to an unspecified site; more than likely a place that will showcase a museum of some kind. The Star Barn will be relocated to Lebanon County. Go here to see the details.

Recent News!

According to Robert Barr, the President of the Agrarian Country Non-Profit Organization: "...the seven month process of dismantling the barn is tentatively scheduled to begin in January 2009, and the earliest the Star Barn could be rebuilt would likely be 2010, East Hanover Twp., Lebanon County, depending upon funding and zoning approvals..."

So if anyone is interested in photographing / painting this barn complex its original location, I would do it fairly soon.

Personal Notes: Taken with my Nikon D40 with my "kit" lens. I also used my Nikon Circular Polarizer II (Slim) to make the whites and dark's really "pop." This barn complex is a tough one to photograph, due to the location that puts it within 50-feet of State Route 283, and the modern equipment / trucks that are housed in a few of the barns. In fact, I had to take many shots in order to get the various cars and tractor trailers out of the background. This photo started off in color, but I think it looks more dramatic as a B&W / Fake Infrared Treatment. However, I might post the color version at some point, both of them turned out really well.

took this shot early this morning in Lake Marmo in Morton Arboretum....again missed the mist that had mostly dissipated already when i got there, had to wake up early as this lake is about an hour away from my house....there was not one single cloud this morning though but the lake was beautiful and glass-like....there were actually several photographers shooting by the lake already when i got there....for this shot, i used a circular polarizer and preset my saturation settings to vivid, this shot is also handheld...i kind of like how this shot came out with the dark shadows in deeper spots of the banks and the angled light hitting the tree foliage highlighting the fall colors....hope this works....pls. i’m finally getting back around to editing my Colorado photos from my trip out there this summer. this shot was captured a little outside of Williams Creek Reservoir. there was a giant ponderosa pine next to me which had been scratch recently by a bear🐻. as i made my way down the valley, i noticed fresh bear🐻 scat on the ground around me. this must be a favorite area to the local wildlife. needless to say, i shot quickly.

was able to wake up in time for a nice sunrise shot in Sedona....i scouted for this location the night before and this is a pond on the grounds of the Sedona Golf Course Resort and the room above that sunrise reflection on the window was our room that we stayed in....the pond was just so still and prefect for another reflection shot....i also had to ask permission from the groundskeeper if i could get on the grounds that early as they were already quite busy getting the greens ready for that day's players......pls. Inevitably I became part of the food chain of bugs inside of the burrow like my little friend… Usually it is not the big animals I worry about but the little ones. Ha! The insects and smaller critters that treat humans like any other food source and their bites is a itchy marathon… As you see here the silent little egret was scratching herself equally as I was! This picture was taken with an intentional over-exposed light control on backlight situation, it seems weird but I have been studying this series since last year, found out that it is quite challenging and fun.

…as the little egret, I know that is him :-)

***I’m receiving many emails asking for details about this series, so plz read some technical details here. thanks!

We discovered this falls through a guide book. It was late afternoon, daylight was getting short and there was a consistent rain falling - which was great for the foliage and rock. The trail was muddy and slick, but ultimately, the destination was worth it!

314/366: Lost Among The Trees | Aspen + Pine

Another version of my ‘Lost Among The Trees’ series this time featuring the Aspen Trees and Pine Trees in Colorado during the fall season. I love in this photo how the trees share the land, they share the resources, they share the good and the bad – they are cohesive in their journey for happiness and kindness. They don’t judge and they don’t hate – they choose to live together, peacefully and in friendship. Shading each other from the pain, from the negative and from the heat. They choose to shine in their differences and thrive in harmony with Mother Earth.

i would like to end this series by going back to the Vatican City during our Papal Audience vist at St. Peter's Square...we were able to go early that morning and got front row seats in the square and had to wait for 2 hours for the Pope's scheduled mass at the square...the place was packed with pilgrims and visitors from all over the world and when the Pope, riding on the Popemobile showed, there was this really loud celebratory and joyous cheer that erupted in the square...some were crying, some laughed, some were screaming, some waved, some were singing to the Pope...it was a totally fulfilling experience to see him this close...i just got up on my chair and started calling him and waving, yelling Hi Pope! Hi Pope! Hi Pope!!!!...i don't know why those words came out but that was what i was yelling...and i was shooting that camera non stop at the same time...it was for us both one of the highlights of this wonderful trip...hope you guys enjoyed the miniscule amount of images that i've shared with you...i would definitely be posting some more in the future but this would be the last in this series for now...GRAZIE!!!!!

Pls View On White and receive the blessings of our Pope!!!

took this frame about half an hour later after my sunset shot of this fountain....i was really happy that the fountain had some uplighting from it's base as i have previously asked a person who worked in the gardens if they light up the fountain at night and was told that there was no night lights for this fountain....it looked more awesome in person though....i'm planning on going back tomorrow night for more night shots as there's only 2 weeks left where CBG stays open until 9pm.....pls. Lately, I have been having a great amount of difficulty processing my images. I am in a rut of sorts, having not learned any new techniques in a very long time. Many of my recently processed images have been discarded solely because I am not happy with them. While this is not something new, it is something that I am happy with. Maybe things are changing.

We call this little falls Whirlpool Falls because it has a nice eddy that catches debris in the water and keeps it going in circles...you dont really notice it with the eye, but when you take a long exposure, like this one, the whirl becomes evident (see note). We were there late this afternoon, and it was really darker than I would have liked, but with a 30 second exposure, I was able to get a few decent shots.
