The people in my town grow an ornamental tree called a Bradford Pear. When in full bloom, the dazzling white is glorious, but bloom only stays in "peak" for a couple of days. I took these Wednesday. By Sunday, these will be green. You'll be seeing a few of my images of this wonderful sight over the next few days.

I could not the believe how much yellow there was in the woods. The color throughout the Gorge today was just incredible.
Marilyn Monroe says goodbye to Chicago, it was good while it lasted...today would be your last opportunity for photo ops with the Big M coz by tomorrow, she is going down and moving on to another city...it was on the news this morning that she is headed out west somewhere in Palm Springs...but no worries coz Elvis the Pelvis might be in the building soon with his blue suede shoes...pls. On occasion you look outside your window in the late afternoon and just have this feeling that the sunset is going to be spectacular - today was one of those days! I put the work down, grabbed the camera and took to the riverside.

i would like to end 2011 with this self portrait/cityscape that i took early this year...i really loved how this one came out with my long shadow stretching out towards Trump Tower as the sun was rising from Lake Michigan behind me...i just did a little bit of perspective correction to balance things out in this frame and the beautiful morning light took care of the rest...
i would also like to thank you all for your very kind friendship and support year in and year out...wishing you all a very happy new year and awesome 2012 to come....pls. View On Black

This is the lower part of Cascade Falls, which is part of the Golden Cascade Falls at Big Basin State Park. I took the photo on a hike at Big Basin on Sunday during record-breaking high temperatures.
Shot on a tripod with a circular polarizer and a neutral density filter.

Here's a vertical from Mono. Nothing super exciting to report about the story behind the shot... oh well, there is but it's kind of an you had to be there story. ApCad workshop, group sets up around the tufa towers at the South Shore and Brian takes some people into the, let's call it "unsafe" part of the shore, north of the wood paved entry to the shore.
Fast-forward 20 minutes and some images later. Brian comes back to meet with the group, grinning... I mean, with a grin as wide as a crescent moon. Let's face it, he was laughing his ass off. Of course we were begging to hear the story but he couldn't tell us because he was laughing so hard. Then, a good 5 minutes later, we got some sort of answer... we figured, he was trying to say we should just wait...
We waited and there they were... Two workshop students, covered in a smelly, boggy mass of Mono which was trying to swallow both of them. Fed by underground springs, clusters of poop-scented brown, icky substance build up under the swampy ground and from time to time find more food in the adventure-seeking unwary photographer. You know who you are.
I hope to post one more before running down to Arches and Canyonlands with the Ruebster next week.
a detailed shot of 2 different types of skyscrapers in downtown Chicago, showcasing it's textures, colors and modern design...
the Chicago River was somewhat calm on this cloudy, gray morning when i walked around this part of the city for a brief shoot around...i did get some nice reflections of the skyscrapers because of this and decided to play around with some HDR and pump up the colors a bit just to guise up the grayness of the morning...
It is an old photo, I just realized I have never processed it. I do not have neither, this camera, or the lens anymore.
took my wife's sister, Liza and her husband, Brendo around the Millenium Park for a shoot-around...they currently live in San Diego but soon will be moving to Washington DC this coming summer...anyway, it was an awesome November day to be out shooting with clear skies and comfortable temps....so this was just another one of the many Bean shots i took that day....pls. This is a slightly different interpretation of this scenery. I decided to go up a little higher from the previous photo. Luckily I found these pine trees that I think may add some interest. Although I am kicking myself now for not really paying attention to each shot, I find the left side not as sharp as the right side.
I took this image of a riverside cottage while I was out shooting with the Lensbaby Velvet 56 in Coulon, France. In my latest video, I tell you about why I decided to try out this lens, show you my experiences with shooting with it and discuss the final printed images. In the distance, one might see the public beach, even on a cloudy day, folks are out enjoying a summer day. However, something I discovered after processing the photo, was that the strip of beach in the near-distance was a hidden away area for those who wanted to commune more fully with nature ... if you take my meaning!
bright lights from the city, silhouettes and shadows, sweeping clouds overhead and colorful reflections are elements i try to incorporate when shooting night time cityscapes...i think in this frame, they all play harmoniously together...

An idyllic moment on Jernegan Pond. The first of a bunch of HDR shots I did with a circular polarizer. The CP jacks up the contrast and really brings out the colors. Made with one raw exposure and cleaned up in Photoshop.

After asking around for some new spots I was led to this spot I never knew existed. Coincidentally it's actually just to the other side of Zilker park and Auditorium shores which is where my other skylines were shot from.
I've been seriously messing around with the Tonal Contrast filter in the Nik's Software plug-in and I found that by adding small amounts of it repeatedly about 6-7 times will produce great results. Another tutorial/ review may be in the works to show this technique that I'm working on so look out for that in the future.
10 exposure HDR tonemapped in Photomatix and tweaked in Photoshop.
To learn how I process my HDR's I have a tutorial up as well as a PDF in it's description so you can print it out.

The (Lack of) Fall Color Report inspired by Miles Morgan
There I am, surrounded in 2 feet snow. This is my fall. The most colorful season you can imagine. The colorful leaves sparkle in the warm sun and dance towards the mossy ground. Well, this is the image I ever wanted to capture but it seems the season, known to others as "fall" or "autumn", was skipped this year by accident.
We went from sunny 80 degree weather right into the 30's and all that in one week. Before the leaves could actually turn yellow, orange and red, they were buried under a deep layer of snow. As much as I look forward to winter and the snowy landscapes, I'd have loved to get at least one descent fall image.
Since there is nothing one can do about that I decided it was finally time to venture out and work with what Mother Nature provided and it was a lot. At about 3800ft. above sea level the forests were covered in deep powdery snow, all veiled in a thick layer of fog and clouds dropping more snow into the winterly landscape.
It was starting to snow heavily on the way back when there was this small break in the clouds and one part in me was happy to see the sun trying to find its way while the other was sad about the extremely thick fog clearing. The sunny part won this time and I set up the tripod to shoot into the snow covered forest. It was almost completely silent except for the wind hauling in serenades. A crack in the woods, another one, there it was, disturbing the inhuman silence. A beautiful deer rambled into the scene and I could impossibly not shoot it. Once the shutter was hit, the deer ran away and I did not expect anything else.
Well, after today, and this lucky moment I might not want the pre-visualized fall shot.
Thanks for looking and great week ahead everyone!

I decided to take advantage of a wet, foggy January morning to try out some new gear I picked up over the holidays. Specifically, I tried out a new ND8 filter, which I think is going to open up a lot of possibilities.
As for the subject itself, what can I say- I love this little cascade in Eno River State Park. I've got a lot of shots of it on my photostream, but it's my favorite spot to shoot in the immediate vicinity of our place. Please forgive the redundancy.

View Large on Black -- The Star Barn is a large highly distinctive Gothic Revival style barn, built in 1872 by Civil War financier John Motter. It has louvered stars on all four sides and on surrounding matching outbuildings. Not only do these stars provide its uniqueness, they also serve a purpose to help circulate the air inside the barn.
When the barn was built, landowners dreamed of a bright future for agriculture. The period following the Civil War marked the beginning of a great era of restoration throughout our country. The stars stood for hope and good fortune for the farm and land. It truly was a new beginning.
Unfortunately, during the last 25-30 years or so, the barn has greatly deteriorated due to age, neglect and the elements. Being situated next to a busy state highway doesn't help the structures either.
However, this barn still has a bright future ahead of it, due to the efforts of Agrarian Country, a non-profit organization. This organization has undertaken the process and responsibility for a major restoration project that will not only preserve the barn, but turn it into an agricultural use that the public can enjoy for years to come. The latest news is that the barn complex is scheduled to be relocated to an unspecified site; more than likely a place that will showcase a museum of some kind. The Star Barn will be relocated to Lebanon County. Go here to see the details.
Recent News!
According to Robert Barr, the President of the Agrarian Country Non-Profit Organization: "...the seven month process of dismantling the barn is tentatively scheduled to begin in January 2009, and the earliest the Star Barn could be rebuilt would likely be 2010, East Hanover Twp., Lebanon County, depending upon funding and zoning approvals..."
This information was found at these websites:

So if anyone is interested in photographing / painting this barn complex its original location, I would do it fairly soon.
Personal Notes: Taken with my Nikon D40 with my "kit" lens. I also used my Nikon Circular Polarizer II (Slim) to make the whites and dark's really "pop." This barn complex is a tough one to photograph, due to the location that puts it within 50-feet of State Route 283, and the modern equipment / trucks that are housed in a few of the barns. In fact, I had to take many shots in order to get the various cars and tractor trailers out of the background. This photo started off in color, but I think it looks more dramatic as a B&W / Fake Infrared Treatment. However, I might post the color version at some point, both of them turned out really well.

took this shot early this morning in Lake Marmo in Morton Arboretum....again missed the mist that had mostly dissipated already when i got there, had to wake up early as this lake is about an hour away from my house....there was not one single cloud this morning though but the lake was beautiful and glass-like....there were actually several photographers shooting by the lake already when i got there....for this shot, i used a circular polarizer and preset my saturation settings to vivid, this shot is also handheld...i kind of like how this shot came out with the dark shadows in deeper spots of the banks and the angled light hitting the tree foliage highlighting the fall colors....hope this works....pls. i’m finally getting back around to editing my Colorado photos from my trip out there this summer. this shot was captured a little outside of Williams Creek Reservoir. there was a giant ponderosa pine next to me which had been scratch recently by a bear🐻. as i made my way down the valley, i noticed fresh bear🐻 scat on the ground around me. this must be a favorite area to the local wildlife. needless to say, i shot quickly.
