This photo was taken on the endge of Scwatka Lake. It is the only photo I took despite carrying my gear on a three hour hike all around the lake and back again. It was an experiment involving a set of Nisi filter combined with a 5 exposure HDR. In this case, I employed a 2-stop ND Grad, a circular polarizing filter and a 5-exposure HDR, all in one. Finally, I merged the raw files and adjusted the final image in Lightroom.
I was a week late to catch peak colors in Porcupine Mountains park this year, but it was still lovely.

I dashed down to the shore at Cramond tonight after work to combine a dog walk with a photo opportunity as the light was just gorgeous about 1 hour before sunset. The tide was on its way out and, with absolutely no wind, the shallows were like perfect mirrors.
I was intrigued by the shapes made in the mud and thought they looked like fat snakes racing towards Cramond Island and the anti-submarine defences in the middle distance!
When I joined the RAF in the early 1980s, the Physical Training Instructors called anyone who was a skinny, fast fella a "Racing Snake" and the expression (wierd though it is) has always stuck with me ever since; I thought it was an appropriate title for this image!

Portrait photographers that shoot Sony mirrorless have just got an exciting new potential tool in their arsenal. The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 is an autofocus, wide aperture prime lens for Sony FE. Beautiful optics, a nice build with weathersealing, dual linear motors to drive focus, and a price about 2 1/2 times less the Sony G Master option. Yep, I expect a lot of photographers will be as intrigued by this lens as I am. This wide open portrait was taken with the Samyang as part of my review process. I used a Irix EDGE Circular Polarizer to intensify colors and contrast (see my review of the EDGE filters here: bit.ly/EDGEfilterDA) My early coverage of the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE can be found below, and stay tuned for more!

Roan Mountain State Park, TN
Camped out this past weekend about 20 yards from this waterfall in Roan Mountain State Park. Started hiking up to Jane Bald on the Appalachian Trail late Friday afternoon, but had to turn back after about 25 minutes because a freak hail storm suddenly rolled over us (crazy weather is common up on Roan Mountain and things can change on a dime at that altitude). Saturday was also a photographic shutout with complete cloud cover all day… had to turn my attention to photographing waterfalls.
Thanks for looking!
I know ... I've been away for a while ... I have some explaining to do. I will have to explain more later but for now I'll say that soon I'm going to be making my stream private to everyone but my contacts, and then I'll be culling my contacts to limit them to folks with whom I've developed some kind of Flickr love that I just really don't want to do without. For a myriad of reasons I just can't continue to indulge the Flickr obsession that I had going in the past, as much as I've loved every minute of it.
All that aside, I've really missed you guys! And I've missed posting, and I'm happy to be doing so again now. By the way, I'm really kinda digging working in black and white right now! I'm again feeling really torn between the worlds of color or monochrome, but I'm feeling less conflicted and more resigned to the idea that perhaps I'll always be torn between the two and that can just be part of what I'm about as an artist. ;)
Love to all my Flickr friends and I'm sorry for my long absence!

Did a little southern New Hampshire waterfall trip with Justin yesterday. We hit Garwin, Purgatory and Senter Falls. This is a shot of the latter, in Lyndeborough (or New Boston, depending on which GPS you're using), one of the coolest waterfall landscapes I've seen in New England. Lots of great, bright moss and cool rock formations — which I wanted to highlight here — all throughout the falls.
This is a fantastic spot for waterfall shooting, and being just an hour outside Boston, I can see myself getting here again very soon on the next overcast day.
Oh, also just pulled the trigger on the 24mm f/1.4 L II. Anyone in the market for a pristine 24-105mm f/4 L? Shoot me a message.

a beautiful moon is the perfect backdrop for this night scene with the view of the Island of St. George and the the church of St. George lit so beautifully at night...a visit to Venice would not be complete without visiting this little island just across Piazza San Marco...the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore is a wonderful basilica and monastery that sits on the island overlooking the Basin of San Marco which is one of the three largest canals of Venice...they began building this church in 1566 but the facade was finished in 1610...the tall bell tower you see here was built much later, around 1791....hope you enjoy this long exposure night scene as much as we did....pls. There are few better places to shoot portraits than sunrise on the beach. I live surrounded by forests, and I love doing portrait work there, but in all truth there is nothing that compares to the dramatic appeal of images shot on the beach. This is a portrait of my daughter shot at sunrise. I love the skimming light, the reflective surfaces of the wet sand, and the way her dress and hair catch the light. I used the incredibly versatile (and generally excellent) Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 RXD on a Sony a7RIII for this shot. I used a PolarPro Circular Polarizer (watch for my review of the premium PolarPro Quartz line coming soon). You can see my review of the Tamron here:

Squire's Castle is located in the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks in north east Ohio. It was built in the 1890s by Feargus B. Squire for use as the gatekeeper's house for his future country estate, which was never built. Squire, a founder of Standard Oil Company, bought the surrounding 525 acres of land but never completed the project. Squire sold the property in 1922 and the Cleveland Metroparks acquired it in 1925. Legend has it that the castle is haunted by the ghost of Squire’s wife, Rebecca. As the story goes, Mrs. Squire developed a case of insomnia one dark night and wandered the castle floors carrying a red lantern. She apparently became startled by one of Mr. Squires trophies hanging on the wall and tripped and fell, breaking her neck. It’s said that Mrs. Squires screams can be heard by those driving by late at night and the red light of her lantern can still be seen shining through the castle windows. The truth isn’t quite so creepy though, as Mrs. Squire actually passed away in Willoughby, Ohio from a stroke years after the castle was sold. At marker 339.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a little area known as Crabtree Falls. More specifically, the Crabtree Falls Campground is at marker 339.5, but there is a 1.5 mile hike to get to the falls. Oh, I forgot to mention that the campground is now closed thanks to budget cuts which makes for a creepy first half mile hike to get to the trailhead. Crabtree is about a 70 foot high falls that starts off narrow at the top, but quickly fans out over many rock levels producing beautiful cascades before landing in a clear pool at the bottom. This is easily one of my favorite waterfalls in NC.
I photographed Crabtree Falls about 2 months ago, but the water level wasn't high enough to produce the image I pictured in my head. I waited and kept watching the weather until a good rainstorm rolled through last week. I was a little concerned driving up the Blue Ridge Parkway early in the morning because the fog was so thick (with 100% humidity). Some of the fog had lifted by the time I reached the falls and what was left created a nice mood to the scene, IMO. Also, the additional water really added some needed contrast against all those black rocks in the foreground.
Thanks for looking! I do appreciate all comments and faves!

This is an 8 shot pano made from RAW originals shot this morning at sunrise over Lake Illawarra at Kanahooka.
I've thrown the post processing kitchen sink at this one to get the colours that you see - and I'm planning to show a couple of work in progress slides so that you can see the work on the way. Full disclosure is that this is a piece of art rather than an accurate representation of the day as it arose this morning - that being said - I'm pretty rapt with this version of reality ;-)
Hope you enjoy a little morning serenity ;-)
Photographer Adam Rainoff's adventures in China continue with this beautiful photo he captured at the Zhangye Rainbow Mountains in Gansu. For this shot Adam used his a Pentax K-1 and Pentax-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 lens, plus our Tamron 15-30 WonderPana filter system, which works equally well on the Pentax lens! Adam used our WonderPana 145mm Circular Polarizer Filter, which allowed him to remove glare and reflection from the landscapes and increase saturation.

this is a long exposure shot of one of the cool reflection POVs you get when you stand inside or under the Cloud Gate sculpture, AKA the Bean...i did the shot by placing my camera centrally underneath the Bean shooting upwards...set the camera on time delay, triggered the shot and this is what came out...if you look right in the center of this image, you will see a tiny black dot in the middle which is my camera with my reflection standing just outside the Bean...pls.
