A splash of colour from my Med cruise archive (September/October 2010).
Taken in the mid-afternoon while exploring the wondrous town of Oia. Although the place was overrun with thousands of cruise ship passengers I stumbled upon this desserted section.
Un amanecer nublado en Cala Blanca
In Eastern Holiday I always come back to Cala Blanca, Jávea, Spain. It's a pleasure to shoot there feeling how the breeze from the sea is caressing my face. However, I wasn't very lucky with the sky colours, ... maybe next time.

Availing the freedom of the last "summer" day at work, I set off to find modest waterfalls within a short distance of Chicago. As it turns out (and to my delight!), about a half-hour drive southwest of the city resides the Waterfall Glen.
This is from the viewpoint at "Many Parks Curve" going up Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Elevation here is around 9,800 feet, offering a view of the mountains through the subalpine forest.

Found this green tide pool along the coast of Rye. The lighting was such I wasn't casting a shadow on the scene, which was good, but it was pretty harsh. This is an example where using a circular polarizer is crucial. I probably didn't need this much exposure length, but I already had the filters set up from a previous shot, so I grabbed a couple with the same setup.

Overcast days can be good for some shots. But normally I leave my camera at home when I go to work if all signs point to a typical Portland, Oregon, sunless day. My Flickr group 112 pictures in 2012 requires a picture taken on Leap Day, 2-29-12.
Here we get some good clouds, however the vast majority of our rainy days are a complete cloud cover with no breaks. Just a solid sheet of gun metal gray color blanketing the sky. This shot was this overcast light. However, in this instance the diffused and even light may have been better for this shot of the side of a building.
Tomorrow I think I'll take an extra vitamin D pill :)

A classic EMD F7 A Unit pulls into Gettysburg. It just came back from a scenic excursion that passes through the countryside of Adams County and briefly passes area that became the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
This was a little off the main path of the Gettysburg Photowalk. As I was walking downtown I heard the horn blow and went looking for the train. It had just pulled up to the train station and I was able to get really close. I also had my new Nikon Circular Polarizer II (slim) to help bring out the sky. I just wish the train was just a little further down the tracks. This was one of the few photos that I took that didn't have a bunch of SUV's and sedans parked in the parking lot. :)
More info on the train here.
With two East Coast Lows this month so far, we have had an unusual amount of rain for this time of year. Some of the creeks around Weereewa are flowing again, and I stumbled across an unexpected roaring waterfall in a hidden gorge. The sides of the ravine were wet and loose, but an adventure to the bottom was irresistable. It turned out to be a sanctuary for some moisture loving vegetation, otherwise surrounded by dry grassy woodlands above. The water was yellowish-brown due to the some of the yellowish soils around Weereewa. Too bad after the rains it will be reduced to a dry rock-face and sandy creek bed again soon.
I used a tripod, 2-second delay shutter release, and circular polariser to eliminate reflections on the water.

Possibly the nicest stretch of beach I've ever seen. At low tide it was about 100 meters wide, almost no seaweed and powdery white sand.
Didn't suck.
All my contacts have been posting these very Spring-like photos while I've been shooting weddings and cars.
I ordered a circular polarizer and an ND8 filter from some South Korea company on Ebay ($17 total including shipping) and they arrived yesterday.
This was shot with a circular polarizer, and it SOOC except for the crop and a slight curve adjustment!
Happy Spring!

"Until The Day Break and The Shadows Flee". I had recently revisited the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel on a rainy afternoon - better lighting than the sunny day on my last visit. I am still in awe of the 10-million piece mosaic construction, completed more than 100 years ago by teams of artisans completing pieces of it in Italy. Arguably the best representation of Byzantine architecture here in the North America, right here in Minneapolis. What an amazing, yet unknown treasure. Enjoy!
It was an impromptu run across the city to get to the "Witch's Hat Tower" to grab a shot of the sunset. As the year approaches equinox, the sun drops itself, more or less, behind the city. There was some light cloud cover on the horizon which rolled into providing the striped clouds. Enjoy!
Duke Gardens, Durham, North Carolina. USA
This is a classic Duke Gardens scene its been photographed a bazillion times. This was taken Sunday 4-14-13, there were a lot of people in the garden and several on the red bridge so I tried to hide them with this beautiful tree.
One Last Time - Dream Lake
I mentioned in my last post that there had been a lot going on lately. I guess it's time to divulge what that's about. Amanda and I are going to be leaving Colorado and moving back to Chicagoland to be closer to our families as we get married in October.
This has been a very difficult decision for me. I'll be glad to be around our families but I'm really, really going to miss Colorado. This place has been my home for half of my life now and it's still my favorite place to be.
I had a list of Colorado things that I wanted to do before we left town. Alas, there's just too much going on and I didn't have time to accomplish much of it. I decided that I could pick one big one and the choice was simple -- one last trip to Rocky Mountain National Park.
RMNP has been a pivotal part of my Colorado affinity, dating all the way back to 1991 when my dad took us there for the first time. I remember his excitement at being there and sharing a place that was special to him with his family. It was the first hike that I did when I moved to the state in March of 2001 and has been a place where I can always find myself.
I woke up at 1AM yesterday in order to be able to drive up to the park and then hike up to Dream Lake in time for sunrise. I was the first person up at the lake, though I was joined by others (some of whom I wish had slept in but that's another story). Alpenglow was short but very nice. I might share another shot of that event in the coming days. I stuck around after sunrise because I was intrigued by the clouds that were moving over the shoulder of Hallett that sits above the lake. The light was very spotty but with enough patience, I was able to get this shot.

Here's mine.
I took this photo from the roof of the mall parking garage. Sadly, just as the light was getting fantastic, I was run off by the mall cop. He didn't know why there was a policy against photos on mall property (he thought 9/11 and terror plots??) but he referred me to the mall police office. Whatever, he was a minimum wage, minimum skill, minimum intelligence drone, just going by the book. But obviously, I got a decent snap anyways. :)
These two Pileated Woodpeckers spiraled up this large tree, almost as if they were playing hide-n-seek. It was quite the commotion!
Yeah, So I got this new Circular Polarizer filter... and this shot is directly from the camera (I cropped it, it was slightly off center.)
This filter pretty much rocks.

Sunrise portrait sessions on the beach. So many incredible options because of the gorgeous color and lighting. I chose to silhouette my subject for this photo, leaving her as the anonymous maiden that anyone could superimpose themselves upon. I used a Fuji X-T3 for this shot along with the extremely versatile XF 16-55mm F2.8 LM WR standard zoom, which I'm currently reviewing. I also used an Irix EDGE circular polarizer to intensify colors, and this shot is as it came out of camera. My review coverage can be seen here:

I'm leaving at the end of the day for a week-long retreat so I won't be around for a bit. I know I just returned, but it is what it is! There's no internet access there and I won't even be bringing my laptop. My laptop and I haven't been separated in years so I'm hoping I find it relaxing rather than completely discombobulating!
I will have my trusty iPhone though so hopefully there will be reception and I can spend some of my down time catching up on your streams. I know I've missed so much! <3

After a lovely morning on Ramshaw rocks followed by an hour in Buxton to buy breakfast and dry socks I headed along the A6. With the amount of fog around I realised there were still photographic opportunities and stopped off. Unfortunately, the fog then lifted. Still a nice scene though, and lesson learned. Breakfast and dry socks can wait.
In these old photos of New York I use different types of filters. In this one I use the circular Polarizer filter.
The circular Polarizer filter, is the bread of every day in my cameras, almost always my photos are through this circular filter, (please make no mistake, some sellers give the linear without saying a word, the circular is only suitable for digital photos and is the one that you have to use) I use this filter also the night when there are many lamps of lights, but be careful, these to be doubles can do unwanted reflections, you have to move of position to remove the reflections of above the lens.
Although they tell you that Polarizers eliminate surface glare from most objects, you always have to be careful, but that's if the colors are great.
This picture was taken right in the board of Argentina and Chile. It was a very windy sunny day, and I could not resist taking some pictures. So here it is one of them, hope you like it!
