decided to post a shot taken from Lake McCullom in McHenry, Illinois as you guys might be tired at my vacation pictures....this is an almost similar shot to a pic i posted earlier on i called Delight's Sunset but this was shot at a higher perspective....still shot with my 18-105 nikkor lens with circular polarizers then processed as single file pseudo HDR to bring out some lost highlights on the foreground.....more vacation pics coming though after this one.....pls. Nature provides a beautiful respite from some of the ugly things happening in our world right now.

This photo is a single exposure taken with the Canon EOS R and EF 17-40 F/4.0 L. I wore long insulated rubber boots and shuffled out through the deep snow onto the ice alongside this forest creek. Except for the sound of trickling water, it was absolutely silent and beautiful in the forest. Here there are no lies, and there is no deceit. Nature gives what it gives, and takes what it takes.

I had the camera mounted on a heavy but sturdy tripod, and used both a circular polarizing filter, and a neutral density filter to control some of the reflections, and eek out as much dynamic range as possible. The final image was processed from raw using Adobe Lightroom Classic 11.

Here's another portrait shot from the exciting new Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 for Sony FE. This one is taken at F2, and you can see how crisp the textures are on the eyes (Eye AF works very well) while the backround is still beautifully soft. The flare effect has been added in post. None of my children have blue eyes, so it was a treat to be able to have one of my daughter's friends model for this shot so that I could make her beautiful eyes pop! I used a Irix EDGE Circular Polarizer to intensify colors and contrast (see my review of the EDGE filters here: bit.ly/EDGEfilterDA) My early coverage of the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE can be found below, and stay tuned for more!

This was a completely recreational shot. We were down enjoying the sea cliffs on the best Sunday in months, sunny and warm. This was a nice flat spot on the cliff and there was a green tide pool, so it was a no brainer. This is a single image straight out of the camera just with punched up color. A 90 deg angle was perfect for my 100 x 100mm circular polarizer, so I was able to stack a grad ND with only the depth of the standard LEE holder. This allowed me to shoot through three filters at 16mm with barely any vignetting, and I have found that the square circular polarizer typically always works the best at 90 degree rotations anyways.

Enough time has passed that I can now confess that I shot this while out managing about 80 high school students on an early run around the reservoir. I had a very good team in place. (11/23)

A long exposure shot from the harbour wall at the very picturesque fishing village of Pittenweem in Fife, Scotland.

One thing that I've noticed, is that my best shots come from when I'm "warmed up" and stop trying so hard to capture something. This photo was taken well after everyone left and it was just my son and I wandering around. OK, it was me wandering around and my son complaining that he want to go and do something silly, like eat dinner. Who needs food when there are pictures to take!

While I prefer to have streams in their natural state, being able to use it as a vantage point makes for a different photograph. It was a good thing that the light started to fade, my Circular Polarizer can only do so much in cutting down the light for a long exposure.

Boathaus in frozen Lake Kochel.

this is another frame from our fogged out sunset and blue hour meet-up at Olive Park last Saturday...the fog got so thick that we could not see any buildings at all from where we were located...it got really dark and misty and cold around the park really quick...but me and 2 of my buddies tried to make the best of this sudden weather change, which is really common in Chicago, and comped some fog shots in the park before leaving the area...i was hoping the dude on his bike would add a little extra nice touch to this frame...hope it works...it's a bit more dramatic if you View On Black

I posted a photo a little while back of Lanterman's Mill and its waterfall taken just around sunset. A few weeks earlier, sometime around October 26th, I got up with the birds and shot it just before dawn. The fall foliage wasn't quite peak yet, but I kind of liked this shot from that morning with the sun peeking through the trees. It has been 6 years since last visiting the Ironwood, Upper Peninsula area. My wife and our friends make a trip of it to run the Paavo Nurmi Marathon, while I am the smart of the group and don't run, they all enlist me to take their photos of the race. In our off-hours, I go looking for waterfalls - lucky for us, this one was quite close to our lodging. True to the area's name, one can see all the rusty iron in the water. Enjoy!

Chicago's NBC building has always been one my favorites. The lights on the building are aimed upward and one those occasions where the city is filled with fog, the building looks like a giant bulb from the distance. "Batman, where have you gone ...?"

Wishing our new administration the best of luck. Hoping that our leadership focuses more on the "United" aspect of our country. No small task ahead - so much to do.

When you think “Victoria” and “Waterfalls”, images of amazing drops in the Otways; Hopetoun, Marriners and Beauchamp, come to mind. Or for some, the more familiar of the Yarra Ranges; Steavenson, Toorongo and Keppel. All are amazing places, and most quite easy to access. But for the more adventurous leave a little to be desired.

This past Grand Final Day with a light mist falling throughout the day, Nathan led Rob and I deep into the Yarra Ranges. No track ribbons, no paved paths or GPS guide to mark the way. Just an occasional goat track and a river to lead us as we pushed through the thicket. Until finally we made it through to a clearing and saw this:

The most pristine, green, untouched cascades that I have ever seen. Nathan has dubbed them “Royal Falls”.

On my way up to Montréal I made it a point to take a small detour and check out Moss Glen Falls in Granville, VT (not Stowe — interestingly, there is a Moss Glen Falls there as well). One of the prettiest sets of falls I've seen in New England, the main drop was a nice 30-foot horsetail. There were a lot of cool elements in the foreground that I wanted to include — tried to get a few of them without creating too much chaos in the image.

The old swing bridge pylons in the Firth of Forth between Throsk and Alloa on a cold, murky, November dawn. The 30 second exposure had nothing to do with using ND filters - there just wasn't that much light at this time in the morning (taken about 15 minutes after the nominal sun-rise!)

While we stayed several nights in this wonderful city, I really wish we could have stayed more. A photographer's dream in that everywhere you point a camera, it's just magic, even beyond this most-iconic vantage in town. Better still, after dark, I felt like we had this bedazzling city to ourselves as everyone vacated. Wanting to return, soon!

This shot was shot on a different night than my previous post. There are two major differences; This is a much longer exposure and this sky is overcast versus blue sky. I was able to get this one, just prior to they sky starting to pour rain.

Enjoy!
