A Grade I listed building, it is a concert hall on the northern edge of South Kensington in London. It has a capacity of up to 5,272 seats. It is a registered charity held in trust for the nation and receives no public or government funding.
Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from many performance genres have appeared on its stage and it has become one of the UK's most treasured and distinctive buildings. The location of some of the most notable events in British culture, each year it hosts more than 390 shows in the main auditorium, including classical, rock and pop concerts, ballet, opera, film screenings with live orchestra, sports, award ceremonies, school and community events, charity performances and banquets. A further 400 events are held each year in the non-auditorium spaces.
The Hall was originally supposed to have been called the Central Hall of Arts and Sciences, but the name was changed to the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences by Queen Victoria upon laying the Hall's foundation stone in 1867, in memory of her husband consort, Prince Albert who had died six years earlier. It forms the practical part of a memorial to the Prince Consort - the decorative part is the Albert Memorial directly to the north in Kensington Gardens, from in front of which I took this photograph.
The Hall is an ellipse in plan, with major and minor axes of 83m and 72m. The great glass and wrought-iron dome roofing the Hall is 41m high. The Hall was constructed mainly of Fareham Red brick, with terra cotta block decoration made by Gibbs and Canning Ltd of Tamworth. The great glass and wrought-iron dome (designed by Rowland Mason Ordish) on top is 41m high. The Hall was originally designed with a capacity for 8,000 people and has accommodated as many as 12,000 (although modern safety restrictions mean that the maximum permitted capacity is now 5,544 including standing in the Gallery).
Around the outside of the building is a great mosaic frieze, part of which can be seen above, depicting "The Triumph of Arts and Sciences", in reference to the Hall's dedication.

Well-known criminal authority from one of the planets of Zeta Reticuli. Belongs to the race of ζ-tervians (men of this race, reaching the age of 50-60 terrestrial years, suffer from severe growth of the brain's frontal lobes, which is accompanied by deformation of the cranium and severe pain; aforemented phenomenon results in death if not taken under the doctors' control).
Became famous for his abnormal level of intellectual capacity, which he uses to organize complex criminal schemes. Has a predilection for validolum.
Several times he escaped from prison; currently the Professor is accused of a number of crimes, including stealing of innovative engines directly from shipyards, assassination of a prominent corrupt politician, experiments on intelligent living beings. The total term of imprisonment for these crimes is about 305 terrestrial years.
The law prohibits the use of the death penalty in the case of elderly aliens, including ζ-tervians, so the Professor is likely to live to the end of his imprisonment.
At the moment current location of the Professor is unknown.
Contact the authorities if you see him.

The main auditorium of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
One of the most famous historic stages in the world, the Bolshoi Theatre was built in 1856 by the Italian architect Alberto Cavos.
A recent six-year long (and estimated 500 million euros) overhaul restored the theatre to its 19th century appearance, removing all Soviet-era aditions and changes.
Some 3,500 architects, historians, art experts, conservators, engineers, riggers, among others, have been striving to replicate the historical structure up to the tiniest detail. The acoustics in the main auditorium, which were destroyed by repair work in the Soviet era, have been brought back to the standards of Cavos's original design. The capacity of the auditorium is 1.740 seats.

Mist. Dictionary definition: "Something you'd see a lot more of if you didn't have the capacity to sleep through a modestly sized apocalyptic event as if nothing were happening. Try getting out of bed early one morning and you might see what you're missing."
Ok, that's not quite what the dictionary says - not the one on my bookshelf anyway. But it would help if I wasn't so lamentably bad in the mornings. If uninterrupted sleep is available then I tend to remain oblivious to the world until getting out of bed is compulsory. On every working day of my life, breakfast is always taken at my desk as I stare sullenly at my emails and pray nobody asks me any difficult questions until at least 10:30. There are studies that suggest I'm not lazy - it's just that my body cycle is out of kilter with the conventions of the world around me. Really I'm just lazy. I know it, even if the clever bods who work on these studies look to excuse my morose glare at anyone who tries to enter my office before I've brewed my first coffee.
So because of this inability to fit in with the rest of society, I don't get to see mist very often, because it generally appears in the morning. I might see it when I'm making the 4 mile journey to work, but by then the opportunity to stand and stare at the silhouettes of distant trees in the gloom has passed. But over the last couple of evenings the air has been still and the mist has returned at the close of the day, and yesterday I resolved to seize the opportunity.
I almost missed my chance though. As I arrived home the mist appeared to be clearing, and I found myself gazing out into the garden feeling undecided, reaching for the remote and "Richard Osman's House of Games" on BBC2. Those of you who aren't in Britain or the Irish Republic, or those of you with interesting lives who do inhabit these countries will have little idea what I'm talking about here. Suffice to say it's a gentle tea time quiz show presented by a genial and gentle humoured giant of a host with no great riches at stake. Within minutes I was fast asleep. Half and hour later consciousness returned along with the gathering mist, and so out I went for an entire half mile in the car - well daylight time was running out you see, and we've already established that I'm lazy.
And this is how I found myself at Unity Woods, a handful of acres of scrub oak with twisting trunks and a maze of secret paths. To add to the sense of eeriness the place is riddled with old mineshafts, a legacy of the tin mining history which once made the area I live in the richest on earth. Ironic that now it's one of the poorest regions in Europe. A number of mineshafts are capped, but there are warnings at each entry to the woods to stay on the paths, lest the unwary visitor inadvertently stumble into another one and disappear 400ft into the bowels of the earth.
What's delightful about this place is the absolute silence you can find. Only the odd mountain biker, dog walker or horse rider passes through this way, or me and my friends when it's my turn to host the Sunday morning pre-breakfast trail run. Last night I saw only 3 people - all of them mountain bikers, although the third one managed to pass by when after not seeing a single soul for more than 45 minutes I decided that the call of nature wasn't going to wait until I went home. Why does that always seem to happen?
Eventually I found myself at the clearing above the local cycle trail, looking down on the lone tree that I always notice when I'm below it on my own mountain bike. The stillness was absolute. A murder of unseen crows broke the silence in the mist somewhere overhead as they made for their nests in the approaching darkness. It was about as perfect as these moments can be. The sort of evening you know you're going to remember the sensation of being there for a long time, made the more delightful by it being right on your home turf. Just wonderful.
And then I realised I needed to get back to the car, through the mysterious twisted wood in the darkness. On my own. Carrying a bag full of expensive camera gear. Accompanied by unexplained and invisible rustling in the undergrowth around me. Probably squirrels or a badger, or maybe even a deer. The fact that I look like the missing Mitchell brother didn't completely dispel the sense of unease either and I was relieved to emerge from the canopy without a band of brigands at my heels. Of course the small car park had two vehicles in addition to my own - one empty and the other occupied by a furtive looking couple, but then again those of you who read my comet tales in July will testify that I'm getting used to this sort of thing. Nobody can see you blushing in the darkness in any case.
Excerpt from Wikipedia: An articulated bus (either a motor bus or trolleybus) is an articulated vehicle used in public transportation. It is usually a single-deck design, and comprises two rigid sections linked by a pivoting joint (articulation) enclosed by protective folding bellows on the in- and outside of the vehicle (usually of gray or black colour) and a cover plate on the inside of the vehicle. This arrangement allows a longer legal overall length than single-decker rigid-bodied buses, and hence a higher passenger capacity, while still allowing the bus to maneuver adequately on the roads of its service route.
Around the English-speaking world, articulated buses have acquired several different synonyms that allude to their articulated design, such as bendy buses, bending buses, tandem buses, stretch buses, double buses, banana buses, slinky buses, wiggle buses, caterpillar buses, accordion buses or vestibule buses. Due to their high passenger capacity, articulated buses are often used as part of bus rapid transit schemes, and can include mechanical guidance.
Used almost exclusively on public transport bus services, articulated buses are approximately 18 metres (59 ft) in length; standard rigid-construction buses are usually 11 to 14 metres (36 to 46 ft). The common arrangement of an articulated bus is to have a forward section with two axles leading a rear section with a single axle, with the driving axle mounted on either the front or the rear section. Some articulated bus models have a steering arrangement on the rearmost axle which turns slightly in opposition to the front steering axle, allowing the vehicle to negotiate turns in a crab-like fashion, similar to hook-and-ladder fire trucks operating in city environments. A less common variant of the articulated bus is the bi-articulated bus, where the vehicle has two trailer sections rather than one. Their capacity is around 200 people, and their length about 25 metres (82 ft).

Excerpt from www.ttc.ca: The Articulated Low-Floor Diesel Buses manufactured by NovaBus, a Division of Volvo Group-Canada, in Ste. Eustache Quebec, are now on Toronto streets.
In keeping with TTC’s commitment to improved customer service, the new “Artics” are 60 feet long and will replace aging existing buses that are scheduled for retirement due to high mileage and general deterioration.
As part of the TTC’s modernization plan the accessible low-floor bus fleet will increase capacity on our busiest routes. Each bus has a capacity of 46 seated passengers and approximately 31 standing passengers. Features include LED interior and exterior lighting, automatic central air conditioning and heating, and ergonomic seating for passenger comfort.
Buses are designed to accommodate two standard wheelchairs and nine priority passenger seats, identified by bright blue upholstery. To minimize engine exhaust emissions, clean diesel engines are furnished with the latest electronic engine controls and diesel exhaust after treatment systems.
TTC’s new fleet of Articulated Low-Floor Clean Diesel Buses is being solely funded by the City of Toronto to improve customer service and replace some of TTC’s aging 40 foot buses.

A Sentinel class S4 steam wagon (Registration No.TJ4651 and Works No.8980 built in 1934) at Santon as No.8 Fenella passes. In 1934 Sentinel launched a new and advanced steam wagon, the' S type' which had a single-acting 4-cylinder underfloor engine with longitudinal crankshaft and an overhead worm-drive axle. Their Sentinel Waggon Works' design of the 1930s led to the production of 3,750 Sentinel 'Standards', the biggest selling steam lorry ever. It was lighter than previous designs and featured a modernised driver's cab with a set-back boiler and was available in four, six and eight-wheel form, designated S4, S6 and S8. In spite of its sophisticated design, however, it could not compete with contemporary diesel trucks for all-round convenience and payload capacity, and was phased out in the late 1930s.

Here's another Station Saturday offering. CSXT M436-08 (Selkirk to Worcester manifest) with a nice old school YN2 AC400Cw leader rumbles east on Main 1 of modern day CSXT's Berkshire Sub, the former Boston and Albany Railroad mainline. They are slowing to be overtaken and run around on Main 2 by hot Syracuse to Worcester intermodal train I022. They are crossing the overpass over Elm Street at about MP QB107.8 and passing the brick former B&A station which dates from 1879. The last passenger train called here in 1955, but the station has been well cared for since with various non railroad occupants though at the present is offered for sale for only $695K.
The depot also served trains of the New Haven Railroad, whose Canal Line crossed the B&A on a diamond immediately to the west of the station. Passenger service ended on the NH in the 1930s but it survived as a secondary freight route until the coming of Conrail in 1976 when it was abandoned south of here to Simsbury, CT. The diamond remained however, and CR successor Pioneer Valley served customers south of the diamond until 1997 and three years later it was formally abandoned and the crossing was ripped up, though PV is still very busy on its surving ex NH lines to the north.
If it looks like the station sits below the rail grade you're eyes are not deceiving you...but it wasn't always like this. The station has not moved but the railroad has! In 2008 the Great River Road project saw the rebuilding of the 1939 truss bridge and the building of a new parallel span that doubled road capacity on US 20 / Elm Street. In conjunction with this the railroad was raised improving clearance from 11'5" to 14'5" eliminating a dangerous situation that saw many a truck get stuck underneath. Alas, if the depot ever sees passenger service again should MassDOTs proposed East-West corridor happen it will be a challenge to incorporate a passenger platform here, but only time will tell I suppose.

The Capacity is a brand new and extra long (21m) Connexxion RNET bus, and is the next months in service on line 310 between Amsterdam Station South WTC and Nieuw Vennep, via Schiphol Airport. This bus have now 5 doors.
This panic shot was made at the bus platform at Schiphol Airport, and the bus shows "999 Geen dienst" (no service) on it's destination display.
The disposal of several Tridents over the summer has meant that the university day Red Line PVR is largely being single deck operated this year but has resulted in capacity problems requiring duplication. While the coaches provide good duplication in the AM peak there has yet to be a solution to the problems when the students finish in the afternoon.

SN56 AXU is an AD Enviro300 new to Highland Country Buses 225 in January 2007 as a 60 seater with 3+2 seating. It later passed into Stagecoach ownership as their 27590 and still works in the Highlands in 2019. It is seen here in Inverness working service 5 to Balloch.
Situated on 780 acres south of the Kansas River, Argentine Yard is the largest and busiest on the entire BNSF network. The former ATSF yard was nearly doubled in capacity following a $95 million dollar expansion project in 1997 a couple years after the BN and Santa Fe combined. With an automated hump and a 60 track bowl it has a thru put capacity of up to 2400 cars per day.
In addition the yard has a major diesel shop so there is always something happening and always something to look at. And conveniently for fans there are five bridges spanning the breadth of the yard, three of which are local roads allowing for the opportunity to walk over for photos. While I could have easily spent six hours just watching and photographing, the guys I was traveling with had no interest in standing out on a highway bridge for five minutes let alone five hours so I was indulged only a few minutes to capture these views off the Goddard Viaduct. Here are three images looking east off the bridge which is at about MP 4.7 on BNSF's Emporia Sub, the former Santa Fe mainline, toward the service tracks and locomotive shop. Sharp eyes will note locomotives in all three BNSF schemes as well as a few old predecessor colors and some foreign units lurking amidst the sea of orange.

McGill's sole Alexander Enviro 400, SN59 AWX, has recently been reallocated to Johnstone and service 38. It was working the 1527 ex-Paisley service to Glasgow from Kilbarchan.
The double decker was previously an Alexander Dennis demonstrator which McGill's trialled on routes out of Greenock. McGill's later purchased it from Connex, Jersey and the vehicle became G8960 operating from Greenock, predominately on services between Largs, Greenock, Braehead & Glasgow (901/906/908). In 2014, when Largs/Glasgow services were became branded as ClydeFlyer, G8960 received a repaint into the "white top" livery and ClydeFlyer branding. It worked ClydeFlyer services alongside '64 Euro 6 Citaros until a batch of '66 Euro 6 Citaros arrived at Greenock in November 2016. The vehicle lost the ClydeFlyer branding and traditional gold stripe and received the new route branding for the X7 between Greenock/Linwood & Glasgow. Now it has been realloacted to Johnstone, providing additional capacity on the 38 between Spateston/Kilbarchan & Glasgow following the withdrawal and replacement of the articulated Citaros. It will presumably gain 38 route branding which I believe is coming soon.
In other fleet news, 5500/1/2/3 are now at Barrhead Depot, joining 8442/3 which have recently transferred from Coatbridge.

Early steam trains needed a lot of support things around the trainstations (compared to current ones) to keep them running. Aside classic depots and repair stations which you can still see on the trainstations today, they also needed coal (so stations included coal stores) and water. Because of that, water tanks were common part of stations too. You can still see some of them standing around tracks today here. This Boheminium model depicts how station of Podmokly (now Děčín) looked like in the end of 19th century. The water tower is no longer there, but it had capacity of 150 m, which was more than enough for 10 middle-sized locomotives.
