Building capacity to increasing the legitimacy of CSOs: a view across the spectrum of self-regulation and accountability
Format: Engagement workshop (1h30)
Summary: If civil society organisations are to be truly effective as a voice for citizens around the world, they need to work hard on standards for continuous improvement of their own governance, as a way to better respond to expectations from citizens, funders, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders who are increasingly expecting demonstrations of good governance and better impact. CSO self-regulation mechanisms are therefore required, but these need to be by and for civil society rather than be imposed by funders or governments.
The three presenters will convey the varying expectations and challenges faced in their three different countries and regions when CSOs decide to embrace self-regulation, and the implication of this in their work with governments at different levels, mass media, social networks, international cooperation agencies and other relevant actors. Imagine Canada will present its newly launched programme of rigorous peer review, which aims at helping CSOs to improve their practice in the areas of board governance, financial transparency and accountability, fundraising, staff management and volunteer involvement, while responding to the new expectations of society. The Latin American network Rendir Cuentas will present a regional perspective on these issuess.

A capacity crowd filled the Portland Convention Center on Monday morning for the Skanner News Group 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast. (Read full story here: bit.ly/L3smWm )
As usual the event attracted a wide variety of attendees, from local churchgoers, educators and teenagers to Mayor Charlie Hales, and both of Oregon’s U.S. Senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley.
Dr. Bruce Goldberg, interim director of Cover Oregon, gave the keynote speech.(Check it out here: bit.ly/Lgw8MG)
Winner of the Skanner News’ Drum Major for Justice Award, an honor bestowed on a local resident who has dedicated their life to Civil Rights, went to Joyce Braden Harris, Equity Assistance Center director for Education Northwest.
Event emcee, Bobbie Dore Foster, executive editor of The Skanner News Group, presided over the presentation of dozens of college scholarships for local students attending schools around the country.
A celebrated poet, Pastor Emmett Wheatfall of Remember the Hope Christian Fellowship Church, gave the invocation as well as the benediction; singer Jeanne Wiggins led the audience in the Black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice.”
For the first time the event was broadcast live on Portland Community Media television, Channel 30.

We welcomed some new teammates, bid farewell to others and awarded distinguished teammates with some weekly end of tour awards. End of tour award recipients were Richard, Eberts, Jason Choi, Phillip Merchant, Connie Adams, Reginald Terry, Conrad Gren, and James Henderson. Adam Walker received a weekly commander's award for exceptional service and the district family met members of the surge team, a group of technical experts who have deployed for 90 days to advance progress on projects.
