Tadadoshi, the third Lord of Hosokawa, began building the Suizenji-jojuen garden as a tea retreat in 1636. It is said that the main reason was the crystal-clear pond, fed by underground currents from Mt. Aso, providing fresh water that was excellent for making tea. The water was also said to benefit one’s longevity. It could be that Tadadoshi did not drink enough, since the garden was completed, “just” 80 years later, by his grandson Tsunatoshi, the fifth Lord of Hosokawa. The thatched Kokin-Denju-no-Ma teahouse on the west side of the lake was originally in Kyoto's Katsura Rikyu, but was moved in Suizenji-jojuen garden in 1912.

This unspoiled stream, in dense native rainforest, not far from the Kumara Reservoir, is typical of hundreds of such streams in the ranges of the West Coast.
Mirror lakes is one of the most well known spots along the famed Milford road and it isn't very hard to understand why. Crystalclear water lets you both see the bottom of the lake and see the skies above. This late in the afternoon the sun is starting to hide behind the mountanrange putting the valley below in darkness.in the last minutes of sunllight the scene really sparkles.
Mirror lakes is located deep inside the Fiordland national park on New Zealands south island and the fiords are on the other side of the mountainrange.
You should really watch this Large On Black since that brings out a lot more detail. My pictures aren't balanced for a white background and a lot of the finer details are lost in this small format.

Don't let the sunshine and water fool you, this beach was extremely hot. The water felt like a suana.
A beautiful beach and crystal-clear waters. The waters extend off to the left of shot and open onto the Southern Ocean beyond the steep cliffs that shelter the gorge. Apparently an idyllic location.
But this is Loch Ard Gorge, site of one of Australia's great Victorian tragedies - and almost-romances in 1878 when the clipper Loch Ard was lost on the rocks at the mouth of the gorge.
Of the 36 crew and 18 passengers, only two survived. Just four bodies were recovered and most of the cargo was lost.
Today, the Loch Ard Gorge is part of Port Campbell National Park, which also includes the world-famous Twelve Apostles.
If you look carefully at the cliff on the right and at the top of the one in the distant left, you can see the effects of the often-harsh winds that blow into the gorge, pushing the vegetation into odd wind-blown shapes.
At the base of the cliff in the distant left can be seen the beginnings of a new sea arch - rocks that have already fall are in the sea beow.
We are back from our trip, which was a definite escape - from winter and other unfortunate realities, such as the government shutdown.
As it happens, my youngest daughter, formerly a park ranger and now working for the US Forest Service, is out of work. Like most government workers, she is a dedicated worker who enjoyed serving the public.
Friends, at this time I cannot find any joy in posting pictures, and so I will wait till something changes for the better.
In the meantime, I am finding solace in looking at your work.

Burgh Island, Bigbury-on-Sea, South Hams, Devon. It is the end of the holiday season at Bigbury; and the last few days of summer in September 2021 bring some lovely sunshine to south Devon. Great view across to Burgh Island through some “Red Hot Poker” plants I found growing wild.
