Christmas is alway a good time for nice photos.

It is not an official Christmas portrait without Grandma. She looks so happy and proud of all of us. Well, maybe not Monte ...

Leicester Town Hall (old) at Christmas

This one by far is my favorite of the night of looking at Christmas Lights. A little Black and White action to set the tone here...

We went driving around looking at Christmas Lights on Christmas Eve in Linden Estates in Omaha. The houses are huge and gorgeous! No doubt they get professionals to come and decorate.

Only a few came out good enough for editing and posting, though.....hard to shoot good pics from a moving vehicle.

(Note: This photo made it all the way up to #96 in Explore before it dropped out)

Jim and I drove from our home in Valdosta to my sister's house in Atlanta to celebrate Christmas with Mother, Daddy, Paulette, and DeWayne. We all rode in the van to the Marta station and rode to the Atlanta High Museum of Art to see the China Exhibit.

Christmas tree at The Alabang Town Centre.

Made by my 2 year old daughter. The basis for this was a crafting kit that had the angel template and some bits and pieces for constructing the angel. We added the pom poms, colouring in, and the glitter glue. Looks great on the top of our tree!

No Christmas tree for us, just lights.

Christmas 2011 - December 26, 2011

A Christmas Cactus that has bloomed way before Christmas : ) Or is this a Thanksgiving Cactus? Taken yesterday in my kitchen.

i'm a sucker for just about any new coffee creamer flavor, and i'm especially fond of the seasonal holiday offerings. if nothing else, they further the theory that you can add the word "latte" to anything and it will then sound delicious. in spite of this, i'm also convinced that every one of these is just a modified variation of whatever might comprise a good "nog", and i picture a huge vat at the dairy processing plant labeled "artificial christmas flavoring".

Our Schwibbogen and base, Pyramide and antique hand carved deer and stag... I simply love the stag!

This was taken at our Christmas celebration at my parents' house.

My Christmas reindeer, who is rather beautifully made and came from Tiger (and probably best not to ask about its manufacture...).

Christmas cake, made by my wife.

Merry Christmas

This photo is all about the background. I wanted to take a portrait of my daughter practicing her violin with nice Christmas tree light bokeh behind her. To get the effect I envisioned in our very small living room required a fairly careful balancing of lighting and camera settings.

On the lighting front, I used a flash with a 1/2 CTO gel through a white umbrella to camera right for key and a flash bounced off of a yellow room wall to camera left for fill. Both flashes were set at fairly low power to balance with the small tree lights at a wide aperture. To maximize the blurring and relative size of the tree lights in the background (which were only about three feet behind my daughter), I backed up as far as I could (maybe 6 feet), zoomed in tight, and set my lens to its maximum aperture (f/4). I could have used my shorter but brighter 50mm f/1.8 to achieve an even shallower depth of field, but the lights in the background would have then appeared much smaller.

You can read more about my thoughts on using longer lenses to isolate a subject against a background in this blog post

This effect is caused by taking a long exposure (~1 sec) of some colored Christmas lights hung on the tree in the town square and tossing the camera gently.

I think it ends up looking a bit like Mardi Gras beads.

My 2006 Christmas edition is at the Laser Cutter getting cut for me. this is the Cardboard pattern which helped me get it to my liking.....
