Several hundred years ago, a vessel was wrecked upon the shore at Jurby, with 3 brothers, by the name of Quayle, surviving the wreckage. When they reached safety on the shore, they got down on their knees and thanked God for their survival - promising that they would settle on land as far from the sea as they could get - the top of the Sulby valley. In 1515, the manorial roll shows no Quayles in the area, yet by the following one, Quayles resided at Ballaskelly & the Creggans, and by the turn of the century, Quayles occupied Block Eary (Eairey), Ballaskella, The Creggans, Lhergy Rhennie, Sherragh Vane and Creg Mooar.
Unusually for Manx farmers, there is no record of any of these Quayles ever combining fishing with the farming, as was usual elsewhere on the island.
Ahhh... shouldn't have started this at night when I was tired - the middle square of yellow polka dots was sewn in facing down... grrr.... And not sure I like the green fabric
When I was a kid, my dad built a house and did the wall to the laundry room out of glass blocks. The room was off the small kitchen, and would've been exceptionally dark since the kitchen had no windows. The house was built up against a hill, and the kitchen was bordered on the side by a dirt wall, so odd as it was, you had to use electricity all day in there! Since it was a two story, a sky light wasn't possible, either. The tiny laundry room, which was between the kitchen and the garage, got what little light it could owing to those glass blocks.
Thus began my infatuation with glass blocks! In South Florida, a friend of mine had neon lights put inside a glass block wall that partitioned his living room from the hallway. That sort of thing was big down there in the 90's. I'll never forget how cool it looked! Of course, you have to like things transparent and shiny, but if you do, these things are strong, and create an effect that while retro, is really impressive.
I took a shot of this one while in Bushman Park, in the rest room. To conserve energy, the city had built the rest rooms so that the front walls were partially made of glass blocks to let the light in. You can't see through them, and they let tons of light in!
I flew out to Block Island with a friend of mine last October just for the afternoon. During the cab ride back to the airport we stopped and took a couple pics. including this one from Charlestown Beach.

I take several routes to the post office from day to day, and walking down the block-long Prosper Street is one of the more enjoyable as it's fairly narrow, one-way, and has parking on only one side of the street.
I have seen this couple passing the time away on a few occasions and the woman waved the last time I walked by and I waved back. I wanted very much to ask to take their photo, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. But a few days ago, she waved again as I passed, so I approached them and asked. Their names are Ruth and Jim and from what I could gather, they sit in front of Jim's house (or, at least, where he lives). Ruth (I learned later) lives across the way.
My memory of the details of the conversation are a bit sketchy, but in the fifteen minutes or so that we spoke, Ruth talked quite a bit about her life... she was born in 1923, married a man from Hawai'i who was Hawai'an-Chinese but couldn't marry him in California (presumably California didn't allow interracial marriages), so they got married in Washington. They had three children and her husband died sometime after that (I didn't probe for all the details). She told me that after he died, she tried to get a $5,000 loan for a downpayment on the house she lives in, but the bank refused her because she was a widow without a viable income. A friend then got her a job at the shipyards. (At some point in the conversation, she mentioned that she worked for the Post Office, but I didn't ask about that.)
Jim didn't talk much about himself, but when Ruth began talking about her house (as well as the two adjoining houses that I believe she said were once owned by the same person), he pointed to a house over my right shoulder and told me it was originally from Louisiana, that it was brought to San Francisco in 1826 on a boat that sailed "around the horn" of South America.

This block was fun and interesting to make -- I just know that this quilt-along is going to be awesome. I'm really loving the Sunkissed fabric as well (which is good because I have a tonne of it!)
The sunset at Café del Mar on Ibiza is stunning. These appartments (100 m. from Café del Mar) that don't have a sea view are less stunning! They really can use a lick of paint.

I pieced my exchange blocks together using my 1880's Wheeler & Wilson hand-crank sewing machine. I plan on hand-quilting a simple spiderweb design in each "Window".
