due to flooding. They rerouted the traffic down our quiet little street. Kind of funny watching people deal with one-car-at-a-time bridges on our street.
Oakland has something of a reputation for being a crime center, the murder rate per citizen surpasses that of any other place and the general feel in the streets in many areas is one of uneasyness and tension.
This, however, is part of south Berkeley, close to the Ashby Bart station, 10 blocks from where we live, and 1 block from where we rent our car from. Someone set a fire in the back of the house, in the alley, and when the firefighters arrived, they found in an upstairs apartment, all of two machine guns, a 50-caliber sniper's rifle, two dozen military assault rifles, assorted shotguns and handguns, a pair of bullet proof vests, as well as 178 marihuana plants.
Good thing they had taken the assault tank out for a ride to have a look at the poppy operation two blocks down.
Todays photo comes from the inside of Alcatraz. I am not sure which cell block this is but I think it might be C. All of the cells in this block are 5 feet by 9 feet. As you can see it is a pretty gloomy place. I can't imagine being confined to one of these cells that is smaller than the bathroom in my house. This was taken in the middle of the self guided tour, which was really pretty good. If you look closely you can see headphones on some of the people in the shot. Everyone inside is being guided by the voices on their headphones and it kind of adds a weird feeling to an already creepy place. Kind of like a prison full of happy zombies.
On a techinal note, due to the fact that it was kind of dark inside, I was shooting 100iso film and didn't have a tripod, I was forced to include all of the other people who were wandering the blocks. If I had had a tripod I would have used a much longer exposure and tried to blur the other people a bit more.

One quilt is going to made using these Garden Fence blocks made using the tutorial here. This block is super easy because there is no seam matching and no pinning needed.
I really like how the outer round is made up of different fabrics rather than a single fabric as is in the tutorial. I'm sure that these colours and this quilt are going to make one of the sisters know that people care about her.
I made this one up! Though that doesn't mean that it doesn't already exist as I can't believe there are infinite variations on a 12.5 inch HST block!

My first block. Out of several. For my swap quilt :D

I think the solid is connecting threads magenta or a discontinued hot pink. I do remember picking it up on clearance a bit ago.
Blocked in the stone with a patchy coat of Khorne Red. (Don't tell Nagash!)
Quite tedious painting around all the bones, I've done a couple of rounds of touching up in both directions but it's not what you'd call neat work.
