This is the half way point for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the intersection for the track to Oturere Hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit. The track to Oturere can be seen at the head of the lake before it heads over the ridge down into the gully. You can see the crossing track on the far left making its way up to the ridge before you get to Blue Lake which is out of shot.

This was part of a off track mission with my youngest when we wandered up Hardmans Ridge, joined the crossing track here where we had dinner and made our way back to the carpark over Red Crater behind us. Don't know which was worse...Hardmans or Red Crater for climbing. The crater was three steps forward, two sliding back...whew.

This was sitting on my hard drive for so long it was growing cobwebs...

A bit of spring snow does wonders to your garden space especially if its the Tongariro National Park. But then again these plants are used to the climate but that doesn't give anyone free license to stomp all over them. As landscape photogs we are supposed to champion the great outdoors...not trash it so i go to great pains to avoid doing any damage.

The next snow fall was approaching behind but had a moment of light on the foreground which provided a awesome contrasty scene. Love how the Hebes in the foreground look like little muffins covered in snow.

The Jungfrau is one of the highest summits in the Interlaken region of Switzerland. Together with Mönch and Eiger it forms one of the best sights in Swiss Alps. This huge wall of snow, ice and rock looms over the valley of Lauterbrunnen.

Overall, the mountains around Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald form one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Alps. From views of the Eiger north face, scenery of Bachalpsee lake, to Reichenbach Falls (waterfall which was were a confrontation between Shelrock Holmes and his foe pror. Moriarty took place): it's an amazing region and is a must see to anyone who likes mountains.

There must have been a moment in geological time when some colleague of Slartibartfast (the great maker of fjords) made the Alps and she/he decided to model some peaks after waves. Viewed from Gornergrat, Zermatt, the Zinalrothorn (4221m) certainly can give that impression.

The full moon setting over Dôme du Gôuter (4304m), Mont Blanc Massif, Chamonix.

Oh, and as in the last picture, you can find mountaineers in this one as well…

A view (4 pics. stitched), from the mountain refuge, of the Caire de Cougourde 2897 m alt. (left) and Gaisses peak 2885 m alt. (right). Caire de Cougourde means "the rock with a shape of squash" (or gourd !) in the local idiom. This peak is very well known because it offers many climbing routes (400 m height approx.) of medium to high difficulties. A nice place for climbers and touring skiers. National Park of Mercantour

The region around Mount Kazbek and Stepantsminda is home to several ancient settlements and historical sites, often linked to Georgian legends and medieval architecture. The most famous and iconic site is undoubtedly the Gergeti Trinity Church 14th century. While the church itself was never a settlement, its surroundings served as a sanctuary for local communities for centuries. Around Gergeti Trinity Church, on the slopes of Mount Kazbek, there were once several small settlements and temporary dwellings used by shepherds and monks. These played an important role in both the spiritual and everyday life of the region and were closely connected to the church. The mountain slopes surrounding the church were often used as summer pastures for Georgian shepherds, who brought their sheep and cattle to graze in the alpine meadows. They built temporary stone huts or used natural caves as shelter. These simple dwellings typically consisted of small stone shelters, often without windows. Some huts were partially built underground to retain warmth during the cold months. They were scattered along the mountain trails leading to the church and further up to the Gergeti Glacier.

During wars and invasions—such as those by the Persians, Mongols, and Ottomans—local inhabitants often sought refuge in the mountains. Some settlements were abandoned after conflicts and fell into ruin. While many of these old villages are no longer inhabited, their remains continue to be a fascinating part of the Kazbeg region’s history.

Further away in the background, at the center of the photo, you can see two Monte Rosa range peaks: Dufourspitze (4.634) and Nordend (4.608).

View of the highest mountain of the Altai Range Belukha mount in clear sunny summer weather.

Lenticular clouds above Schreckhorn mountain (4,078 m) in the Bernese Alps as seen from Faulhorn (2,681m) summit. It was raining for the most part of the day and we were lucky to escape the heavy hail near the summit, so the chances to see some decent (if any) sunset were really slim. However, just before the sun went down the skies cleared and we had a good 15-20 minutes of the amazing sunset light.

So I guess never give up :)

Now are mountain cairns the equivalent to driftwood stacks on the beach? There's something that hoomans seem to always need to do and stack stuff into a formation or make a signal marker. I'm not a phycologist and want to begin to work it all out but will still photograph them although do know a few photogs who just hate them. Either way they do seem to appear all over the place...bit like that old meme - 'Leroy was here' maybe. Ponderous.

A sprinkle of white stuff on the farms around National Park this last snow fall. Was a bit of a precarious spot to stop with the traffic roaring past behind and scattering all the grit the council had layed down for the ice on the road over the camera gear and yours truly. The things we do...
