The last of the clouds were clearing from Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro on the left. By clearing meaning that you could see them...it was still blowing a force 10 gale tho. Alpine environments are to be respected as the weather here can change in a flash leaving you exposed if you are not prepared. Must be a boy scout motto there somewhere...

This is the first time I have taken this train in winter, for a hike in the Morteratsch valley up from the railway station to the glacier at the foot of Piz Bernina.

I didn't set out with the idea of taking some videos with my smartphone, on the train, but then in front of this high-altitude scenery I had to do it. The result is enough to make me want to go back.

The photos are better and I will post them soon.

Happy Easter to all.

Buona Pasqua a tutti.

After a fresh spring snow fall there was a glimpse of the Pinnacles which are the two peaks you can see before the incoming snow storm starts to envelop Mount Ruapehu. The visuals of the storm drama rolling thru just made for a striking image methought.

Swiss Alps, shot made from Mountain Lodge Faulhorn (2681m) around two hours before sunset. Amazing view, highly recommended to visit and stay there over night!

The cog railway overcomes a difference in altitude of 1217.27 meters. Besides the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, the Drachenfelsbahn and the rack railway Stuttgart Wendelsteinbahn is one of only four operated rack railways in Germany. She is a listed monument. In the background you can see the foothills of the Alps with lake Simssee and parts of lake Chiemsee. Please zoom in for more details...or watch the second image

The frozen-over Garichti lake, and Matzlenstock 1971m under the light of a full moon and some stars (the bright one in the middle of the picture is Sirius). Mettmenalp, Schwanden (GL), Switzerland.

The diversity of landscapes in the Olympic peninsula is quite amazing. We were at the rain forest on our first day and were treated with this view of alpine landscape the following day. No word can describe how beautiful this part of the country is.

This shot of Aiguille des Deux Aigles was taken from Plan de l'Aiguille, Chamonix, during the (very literally) blue hour.

I had hoped for a bit of a sunset to light up those rocks in the foreground and maybe colour the clouds a little. But the clouds liked it where they were and they stayed there, denying me a view of the stars and the sunrise. Yet, I like that blue mood quite a lot…

The remains of the glacier beneath Clariden (3267m) near the Klausenpass. Sometimes, there are little icebergs floating on the meltwater lake.

On the day this picture was taken, rainclouds drifted over the lake, removing almost all colour from the landscape. Also, visibility was limited to a few metres and I got soaked within minutes. Still, these two little icebergs stuck out of the fog for a brief moment which made the hike through the rain worthwhile.

This has been my accommodation for the last week. Would have been silly not to take a snap of it.

Magical vibes of mountain lake in Hohe Tauern

I took the photo in September 2014, when I did the "5 Lakes Hike" in the Pizol area, one of the most popular and beautiful hiking trails in Switzerland. The photo shows the Wildsee, one of the 5 lakes. The entire hike takes about 4.5 hours.

I know you're supposed to take it easy on your first day. Still, I was too eager to see the legendary UNESCO World Heritage view from Seceda.

We started at the Col Raiser cable car station (2,100 m) and followed Trail #4 through open alpine meadows. The trail is classified as moderately complex, and the whole circular route measures approximately 9.7 km, with a total elevation gain of just under 500 m.

It took us about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the Seceda ridgeline, which sits at around 2,500 meters. And yes — it is as spectacular as people say. From up there, the Dolomites unfold like a natural amphitheater: the Sella Group, Sassolungo, Catinaccio, and of course, the iconic Odle pinnacles, lined up like sharp teeth against the sky.

I took plenty of photos of this incredible view and eventually selected the three best images. Each of them features the iconic Odle peaks, but every photo captures the mountains from a different angle and perspective, highlighting the ever-changing character of the landscape.

We made a quick stop at the Seceda Hut, but we couldn't get the staff's attention. It was surprisingly busy — turns out there's another cable car that drops visitors right at the top. So, no, not everyone hiked the whole trail.

We continued to Sofie Hut (2,410 m), where we had a light lunch with a front-row view of the surrounding mountains. From there, the trail led us toward Mastlé Alm (approximately 2,300 m), a peaceful area featuring wildflower meadows and small glacial lakes.

The final stretch led us along well-marked paths, gently looping back down to Col Raiser and completing the circle. In total, the hike took approximately 4.5 hours, including breaks — plenty of time to take in the landscape and appreciate why this area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

View from the Hüfi Hut in the Maderaner Valley in the Swiss canton of Uri. The hut is perched on a high shoulder of rock 2334m and overlooks the valley, the neighbouring peaks and the Hüfi glacier. And occasionally, you can swim through a sea of clouds just by standing on the hut's patio.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo, also called Drei Zinnen in German, are three distinctive peaks in the Dolomites, Italy. The trek around them is one of the most beautiful treks in the Alps with stunning scenery, especially in the night when the sky is clear and you can see the stars.

Big glacier, small people: The icy bumps and ridges on the weathered surface of the Aletsch Glacier look small – until you get something to put a scale to it. The structures are about 30-100 centimetres high. The colourful hikers were about 50 metres away when I took the picture.

Lai da Palpuogna, with Piz da las Blais (2929m) and the two peaks of Dschimels (2781m, 2777m) in the background. Preda, Grisons, Switzerland.

Another extraordinary day in the mountains. Huckleberries everywhere. Lots of birds including very boisterous Clark's Nutcrackers.

There is no better way to spend a day!

Piz Terri (3149m) in the Lepontine Alps marks the border between the cantons Grisons and Ticino. It overlooks Lago Luzzone in Val Blenio on its west side, Val Sumvitg on its north side and Val Lumnezia on its east side.

I took the photo in September 2014, when I did the "5 Lakes Hike" in the Pizol area, one of the most popular and beautiful hiking trails in Switzerland. The photo shows the Schwarzsee, one of the 5 lakes. The entire hike takes about 4.5 hours.

The peak of the Täschhorn (4491m) is coloured by the first morning sun rays while the Dom (4545m) on its left is still in the shadow. Seen from Zermatt.

View from Sunnenberg (2221m) to Gandstock (2314m), Charenstock (2421m), Berglihorn (2427m), Blistöck (2405m, 2447m, 2446m) and Schwarztschingel (2426m). Mettmenalp, Glarus.

Hiking in the Bernese Alps, starting with a cable car ride from Hasliberg to Mägisalp, Switzerland, and ending at Alpen Tower / Planplatten.

This is for me the typical Swiss scenery many tourist like to see when visiting Switzerland. High, rugged mountains covered with snow and glaciers, some cows grazing on green alpine meadows. And of course the clear and clean air.

I also love this landscape, and there is nothing more beautiful than hiking and enjoying such a scenery.

Panoramic view from Crap Masegn (2516): Piz Cavistrau Pign and Grond (3251m and 3219m), Bifertenstock (3419m), Tödi (3613m), Muttenstock (3089m), Ruchi (3107m), and Hausstock (3158m).

There is quite a bit of detail to see here – it pays to view this one in its original size (if you have a decent internet connection).

“To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again.”

This is a alternative view of Ngauruhoe in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand from a off trail wander up whats called 'Hardmans Ridge'. It overlooks the Tongariro Alpine Crossing which carries about 1000 people over it on a good day weather wise. Going up this way we didnt see anybody...yay. Ruapehu stands in the middle back-ground.

I really enjoyed the view in that morning, also the light and clouds offered good conditions for a nice panorama, hope you enjoy it...
