While hiking around Tre Cime di Lavaredo, I took a small detour off the main trail — and found this quiet puddle reflecting the iconic peaks.

It wasn’t part of the planned route, but definitely one of the most magical moments of the day.

Some of the best moments are found when you leave the path.

A light dusting of snow and some afternoon light on the mountains in the neighborhood.

After climbing a 500-meter of vertical path through the woods, my wife and I emerged in front of this marvel. I immediately thought of the title I would give this photo.

I didn't change my opinion.

In this case its the access track to the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the Tongariro National Park. Started many a wander up this road, mostly in the very early hours of the morning to get early starts for sunrise atop the crossing so its a bit of a novelty to see this in daylight....

I was sweating and cursing myself :) for carrying the big DSLR up to the mountain pass then I never regretted it an hour later when enjoyed the view...yes, we climbed the Passo Gavia (2652m) by bike from Bormio!

It was one of these perfect autumn days in the mountains when I took this panoramic photo. The lenticular clouds were the perfect complement to the mountains. Taken from Bettmeralp (VS).

From left: The Mischabel Massif with Alphubel (4206m), Täschnern (4491m), Dom (4545m), Nadelhorn (4327m), Ulrichshorn (3925m), Balfrin (3796m); Matterhorn (4478m); Weisshorn (4506m).

The mountain stream called Flem collects the meltwater coming from the Segnas Glacier and the surrounding peaks. It flows down almost 2300 metres to join the Rein Anteriur (Vorderrhein) between Flims and Trin Mulin. On its way down, the water has created some wonderful places: it cascades down sheer cliffs, runs through forested valleys and has carved out small canyons. Hikers can follow the Flem on a beautiful trail (Trutg dil Flem).

Another re-hash. This is looking up to where the Tongariro Alpine Crossing reaches South Crater at the dip between Ngauruhoe and the ridge running up to Mount Tongariro on the left which is out of shot. To get to South Crater you have to climb a few thousand steps up what's called the 'Devils Staircase'. It can be a bit of a gut buster...then you reach the crater which is almost dead flat before the rough climb to Red Crater. But that is another image.

Sometimes you just have a mental block when processing a image so best remedy is sometimes to wander away and try again later. Well a few months later have finally got this 3 shot pano roughly where it should be. The last of the setting sun on the hills and the mountains just worked a treat...in the end. It can be really tricky creating a panorama of multiple images and getting the water surface correct. Doing each one as longer exposures to blur the water would make it easier to stitch them together. But no, wanted to keep the water wave effect. That was the most frustrating bit blending it all together...maybe a lesson learn't. Its when you repeat that un-learned lesson that you start kicking your-self...haven't got to that bit yet.

Discovering Étang de Peyregrand nestled in its rocky cirque high in the Ariège Pyrénées felt like stumbling upon a secret sanctuary. The perfectly still water created a flawless mirror, doubling the already spectacular autumn landscape of golden slopes and jagged limestone peaks.

My intention was to capture the serene beauty of this high-altitude lake in its moment of perfect tranquility. The small skeletal tree standing in the shallows became an unexpected focal point - a natural sculpture that breaks the symmetry and adds a narrative element to the reflection. The textured foreground with its rocks and grasses grounds the composition and invites the eye to travel across the water toward the dramatic peaks beyond.

What captivated me about Peyregrand was its sense of isolation and untouched beauty. Unlike more famous Pyrenean lakes, this spot retains a feeling of discovery, as if you're the first to witness this particular arrangement of light, water, and stone. The autumn colors painting the slopes in warm tones contrast beautifully with the cool blues of sky and water.

This image celebrates those rare moments in mountain photography when all elements align - calm conditions, beautiful light, and a landscape that needs no embellishment to reveal its magic.

Happy New Year, everybody!

La spettacolare vista dalla vetta della Tête de Valpelline (3.798 m) al confine tra Italia e Svizzera.

I know you're supposed to take it easy on your first day. Still, I was too eager to see the legendary UNESCO World Heritage view from Seceda.

We started at the Col Raiser cable car station (2,100 m) and followed Trail #4 through open alpine meadows. The trail is classified as moderately complex, and the whole circular route measures approximately 9.7 km, with a total elevation gain of just under 500 m.

It took us about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the Seceda ridgeline, which sits at around 2,500 meters. And yes — it is as spectacular as people say. From up there, the Dolomites unfold like a natural amphitheater: the Sella Group, Sassolungo, Catinaccio, and of course, the iconic Odle pinnacles, lined up like sharp teeth against the sky.

I took plenty of photos of this incredible view and eventually selected the three best images. Each of them features the iconic Odle peaks, but every photo captures the mountains from a different angle and perspective, highlighting the ever-changing character of the landscape.

We made a quick stop at the Seceda Hut, but we couldn't get the staff's attention. It was surprisingly busy — turns out there's another cable car that drops visitors right at the top. So, no, not everyone hiked the whole trail.

We continued to Sofie Hut (2,410 m), where we had a light lunch with a front-row view of the surrounding mountains. From there, the trail led us toward Mastlé Alm (approximately 2,300 m), a peaceful area featuring wildflower meadows and small glacial lakes.

The final stretch led us along well-marked paths, gently looping back down to Col Raiser and completing the circle. In total, the hike took approximately 4.5 hours, including breaks — plenty of time to take in the landscape and appreciate why this area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Following on from the previous photos,

here is finally the Col de la Croix, from where you can enjoy an incredible view of the entire Alpine arc of the Aosta Valley, including the Mont Blanc massif which I will publish next time...

Thank you for your comments and favourites.

A gently winding path leads through lush green meadows into a peaceful hilly landscape at the foot of the Alps. Tall fir trees line the way, while the afternoon sun bathes the scene in vibrant colors. In the distance, dark forest silhouettes contrast against a clear blue sky scattered with soft cumulus clouds. The image evokes a sense of calm, openness, and the raw beauty of alpine nature.
