Here in the Lake Arpy area, it'is really difficult to move from one side of the valley to the other if you stray from the beaten track.

Rhododendron plants densely colonise the entire area, which is also characterised by peat bogs, due to the large amount of water that converges in this final part of this glacial valley.

The place is an enchanting gem, I would love to return there with the larch trees in their autumn colours.

The granites of this part of the Mont Blanc massif also dominate the Ferret Valley, leaving the hiker photographer enthralled.

Oeschinen Lake (Oeschinensee) is a lake in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, 4 kilometres east of Kandersteg in the Oeschinen valley. At an elevation of 1578 metres, it has a surface area of 1.1147 square kilometres. Its maximum depth is 56 metres. A gondola lift from Kandersteg leads to Oeschinen, 25 minutes by foot from the lake. Since 2007 the lake is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site. As of summer 2021, a circumnavigation of Lake Oeschinen is not possible. The reason for this is the danger of an imminent rockfall on the south shore, which is why paths are closed there.

This is the welcome committee that greets hikers passing along trail 10 at Lake Muffé, on the path that also leads to the Barbustel refuge.

Encountered at an altitude of 2000 metres altitude.

As usual, the weather was variable, with vapour rising from the valley floor at the start of the day, followed by darker, more threatening clouds, but then wisely the sun prevailed, without rain. A beautiful walk among the clouds.

Situated almost entirely between 1750 and 2100m above sea level, the Fafleralp to Lauchernalp – Lötschental Panoramic Trail offers a magical panoramic view of the Lötschental. Easy. 9.3 km.

It quite quickly starts to climb gently all the way to Schwarzsee. The path meanders through wild romantic forests, and if you’re hiking during the autumn months, then be prepared to experience some of the nicest colours autumn has to offer. Trail offers idyllic picnic spots to rest and recover on the edge of the picturesque Schwarzsee lake.

The Weisshorn is a major peak of Switzerland and the Alps, culminating at 4506 metres above sea level. It is part of the Pennine Alps and is located between the valleys of Anniviers and Zermatt in the canton of Valais. In the latter valley, the Weisshorn is one of the many 4000ers surrounding Zermatt, with Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn.

Shortly after arriving at the lake, cloud cover allowed me to take this backlit shot without lens flare. It would have been nice to climb up to the left where there was snow, but caution counseled not to.

«If a photographer can’t feel what he is looking at, then he is never going to get others to feel anything when they look at his pictures.»

This photo was taken near Lac Carbon in the Vallée des Merveilles, located within Mercantour National Park. It shows a shallow alpine stream surrounded by rocky terrain, grassy patches, and scattered evergreen trees. In the background, a prominent mountain peak rises under a clear blue sky with some cloud cover. The water is transparent, revealing stones and pebbles beneath the surface. The area is typical of high-altitude alpine environments, with minimal vegetation and exposed geological features.

The most beautiful days have arrived in the Alps, a feast for the eyes for all those who love nature and the colours of this season, which I wish would last longer.

I took this photo on a hiking tour between Trockener Steg and Schwarzsee above Zermatt (the so-called Matterhorn Glacier Trail). I would assume that some decades ago the vast scree and boulder fields were covered by a glacier.

Nock Mountains, Carinthia, Austria

The mountain range name "Nocken" comes from the numerous dome-like and grass-covered summits (Nocken). In July 2012 the Nock Mountains were designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

They were largely unglaciated in the Ice Age and were a glacial refugium. (quoting Wikipedia)

We crossed this area on a panoramic road, winding our way up countless hairpin bends in the camper and then down countless hairpin bends again. There are other, much busier panoramic roads in the Austrian Alps, so this one was all the more beautiful as it was less busy. Countless hiking trails start from parking lots along the winding road, we did a few of them. This capture was taken on one of the hikes.

Aiguille emerging from the morning mists above Chamonix.

The Aletsch Glacier or Great Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km,] has about a volume of 15.4 km3, and covers about 81.7 km2 in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Aletsch Glacier is composed of four smaller glaciers converging at Konkordiaplatz, where its thickness was measured by the ETH to be still near 1 km. It then continues towards the Rhône valley before giving birth to the Massa. The whole area, including other glaciers is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

Glacier du Tour and Aiguille du Tour (North and South peaks, both 3540m) in the upper end of the Chamonix valley. The peaks visible in this picture form the border of France and Switzerland.

Historical pictures (accessible on the page of the formidable photo archive of ETH Zürich: Glacier du Tour, 1914 and here http://www.glaciers-climat.fr/Tour/Glacier_du_Tour.html) show that these reddish-grey rocks below the ice were completely covered by the glacier just a century ago. Even in 1977 most them were under ice.

The remains of the glacier beneath Clariden (3267m) near the Klausenpass. Sometimes, there are little icebergs floating on the meltwater lake.

Neige immaculée,

Sous mes pas, un doux silence,

L’azur s’étend loin.

Pristine snow untouched,

Soft silence beneath my steps,

Blue sky stretches far.

I love the magical glow that precedes sunrise. It is worth getting up at 3am and snowshoeing almost three hours to one of the best vantage points in the area to get the shot. The hike in the darkness was rather nice, it was only a few degrees below zero. But when I arrived on my spot, the wind had picked up and rattled at my tripod and camera. Despite using my cable release and stabilising the tripod with my backpack, most of my pictures are not sharp which is a bit frustrating. Using a long lens might not have helped matters. Still, some of the shots turned out acceptably sharp. This is one of them.

Autumn in Val Ferret

Golden woods cover the slopes around the Prasec Chalets on the banks of the Dora di Ferret. The Mont Blanc range dominates the skyline (Valle d'Aosta, Italy).

In the mystical Vallée des Merveilles, nestled among jagged peaks and ancient rocks, Lac Fourca lies in perfect stillness. Its deep blue waters reflect the surrounding alpine landscape like a mirror, while the sparse vegetation and rugged terrain evoke the raw beauty of high-altitude wilderness. Under a clear sky with the moon quietly watching overhead, this scene captures the timeless serenity and geological grandeur of Mercantour National Park—a place where nature whispers through stone and silence.

Because we lack a proper winter so far, I have to content myself with memories of last summer.

Evening light hitting the slopes near the Windegg hut SAC/CAS, Gadmen, Bernese Oberland.

The stream follows the flow of water coming down from the alpine lakes and glaciers, the farm road accompanies the path of the shepherd and the herd of cows to the pastures and back to the valley, after the summer at high altitude in the fresh air.

Natural water paths alongside man-made paths, the cows will return to the barn with the shepherd, and we men will finish our happy days back to the cities .... two parallel journeys, with many similarities that make us think and reflect.

Cammini paralleli

The Stellisee (2,537 m) is among the most famous of Zermatt’s lakes. The sight of the Matterhorn reflected on its mirror-like surface is breathtakingly beautiful, and is made for magnificent photos.

Hiking along Lake Sils, Engadin, Switzerland.

Nestled in the rugged heights of Valmasque Valley, this alpine lake reflects the jagged peaks and clear blue sky like a natural mirror. The water is so transparent that submerged rocks are visible beneath the surface, adding depth to the serene composition. Surrounded by steep slopes, gravel shores, and sparse vegetation, this tranquil scene captures the raw elegance of Mercantour National Park. A moment of stillness in the wild heart of the French Alps.
