I heard a rumbling and howling behind me, getting closer. So before I could see anything in the rear view mirror, I decided to park in an outside bend and wait for them to pass to give them space.
This seems like an appropriate image to signal a burst of summer alpine photography - my friend Grey walking down the hill to the Chalet des Anglais. Probably the last time either of us will do it as members of a chalet party but almost certainly not the last time we'll visit Chamonix.

Fall color comes to cottonwood and aspen trees in McGee Canyon, Eastern Sierra Nevada
This is a favorite east side Sierra Nevada canyon. Like so many of these canyons, it spills out into the Valley east of the sharp eastern front of the range, with evidence of ancient glaciation in the form of lateral moraines. It quickly twists and turns and rises toward the monumental peaks of the Sierra crest, quickly transitioning from essentially desert country to alpine terrain in a matter of a relatively few miles. This particular canyon doesn't necessarily look like much from the valley, as its lower reaches are obscured by the moraine ridges near its base. But as soon as you cross those low hills and enter the main canyon, its steep walls and stupendous scale become obvious.
In the fall the lower canyon is full of cottonwood trees turning golden, while higher up the canyon aspens change color a bit earlier. Several years ago I backpacked into this canyon in September, the only time I've done so, and I passed through some of the earliest color I've seen in the Eastern Sierra. This was another early color year, largely as a result of California's four-year drought. On this visit there was a bit of relief from the incessant heat and dryness as weather fronts passed through, and a bit of snow is visible along the higher faces.

Silène acaule (Caryophyllacées).
Silène acaule, also known as moss campion or cushion pink, is a small wildflower that is common in the high arctic and tundra, as well as in high mountains of Eurasia and North America. It is an evergreen perennial flowering plant in the carnation family Caryophyllaceae. The plant is characterized by its low, ground-hugging appearance, dense cushions, and bright green leaves. The flowers are solitary, star-shaped, and typically pink, although they can occasionally be white. The flowers are borne on short stalks and can be up to 2.5 centimeters long. Moss campion typically appears in June through August and is found in various habitats, including dry, gravelly localities and damp places. It is also known for its ability to change the gender of its flowers between years, with female flowers producing better quality seeds and male flowers producing better quality pollen

Pinnacle Peak in the Pacific Northwest's Cascade Range illuminates with fiery alpine glow as the sun drops below the horizon. Snow capped Mt. Adams looms in the distance.
I drove through Alpine, Texas in Far West Texas after leaving Big Bend National Park. It's a small town, big in the arts. There are a number of art galleries, murals, and an annual Art-walk in the city.
This beautiful mural was painted by Texas born and educated western artist, Stylle Read, who combines his love of history with art. He has painted works in many states of the US from California to Tennessee, with a large number all over the State of Texas. After being painted, his outdoor murals are covered by a sealer developed by NASA for UV ray blockage to prevent excessive fading of color.
Sul Ross is the name of the local university, Sul Ross State University. Dan Blocker who became famous as the character "Hoss Cartwright" in the long-running TV series, Bonanza, was a Sul Ross alumni. His beloved character is depicted on the lower left side.
Alpine had its beginnings with the building of the railroad in 1882 and the railroad is left center.
To the left of the Sul Ross banner is a map of Brewster County, home of Big Bend. Brewster County is the largest county by area in the state, over three times the size of the state of Delaware, and more than 500 square miles (1,300 km2) bigger than Connecticut.
Unfortunately I didn't know all this information at the time I was there. During my brief visit of an hour or so I was captivated by the artwork just in this one block. Little did I know that there are various murals around the town, painted in conjunction with the annual Art-walk. Alpine loves culture and the arts. (Incidentally, this entire region is influenced by the arts, particularly of the desert and mountains of the whole Big Bend area.)
I was not able to capture the entire width of the mural. Most of it is here, but a little is cut off on each end. I would love to revisit this entire area in November when the annual Art-walk is held in Alpine. Also in November the famous chili-cookoff is held in Terlingua, on the western edge of Big Bend National Park.
