The no3 1965 Morris Mini Copper S of Belgian pairing Jean-Jacques Martens and Aswin Pyck finished the Alpine Challenge second overall at the end of the three day rally in the Swiss Alps.

Jeff Carter is an Official Fujifilm X Photographer and was named as a Fujifilm brand ambassador in June 2015. Alpine tarns at the base of talus slopes, Kings Canyon National Park
The meaning of the term "tarn" is somewhat varied. Two technical definitions I've heard include (rather precisely) a small lake in a depression scooped out by glacial action, or (more informally perhaps) simply any very small body of mountain water too small to qualify as a real lake. Yes, that's pretty subjective! Aside from their tendency to produce mosquitos, I love tarns, and I especially love areas where they are embedded in a rocky landscape broken by small meadows and occasionally trees.
I photographed this spot with its tarns (or small lakes, if you prefer) in shaded, soft light. There was sun, but it was low enough in the sky that its direct light was blocked by a tremendous rocky ridge to our west. Down here at the base of the small valley where we camped, everything was quiet and soft, including the light.

Alpine Travel Leyland Olympian / Alexander G709 TCD arrives at Abergele to take up afternoon school contract 463 from Ysgol Emrys-ap-Iwan to Towyn. This bus came to the fleet from Stagecoach in Lincolnshire where it was numbered 14979.

Lurs (you pronounce the "s") a very attractive and very picturesque village, perched on a narrow butte overlooking the Durance valley. Lurs is a tourist village, but not too well known and not too crowded. There's no real commerce in the village, but one good hotel-restaurant and one great restaurant.

Alpine swift (Apus melba)
Meaning behind the name:
Apus = Latin, and derived from Greek meaning "without foot" and refers to their appearance of not having any feet.
melba = Unknown origin and is thought to be of Chinese in 1758. One suggestion is the word could then be a shortened form of the Latin "melanoalba" or "melalba" which means "black, white" which is the colour appearance of this swift.
Did you know?
Swifts are unique with their legs and feet, since they are only designed to cling and not perch. They spend almost their entire lives on the wing, only landing to rear up their young.
The English name "Swift" is just one of several names that was given to it. Others include "House swift" (1668), Black Martin or swift (1678). The Alpine swift wasn't well known here at the time, and the "Common swift" was thought to be a bad omen and surrounded by superstition. However, Swift became common usage for this species from 1768. Swifts, Martins and Swallows had all shared names prior due to their simular resemblance to each other.
There are many Alpine Chipmunks sharing the space with the Pikas at the Alpine mine. It's a rather nice ecosystem up there - wildflowers galore, butterflies, etc. Because of the high elevation, the flowers last longer than lower down.

An endangered skink found in the alpine regions of Victoria.
Taken at the alpine tundra of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, USA.
I loved the bizarre and beautiful plants that live here. From a distance, it looks barren, but looking closely exposes a wide variety of life that are suited to this harsh environment. It's a very fragile environment though. It's infuriating to see tourists stomping around on plants that take a long time to establish and have a very short growing season.
A view of the Snowy Range, the alpine forest at timberline, and Libby Lake. Medicine Bow Peak, the highest at 12,014 ft. (3,662 m) elevation, is in the center. Sugarloaf Mountain at 11,398 ft. (3,474 m) elevation is the closer, conical-shaped peak to the left.
