Photographed while hiking Sunday River Whitecap, a somewhat remote peak in northwestern Maine. It is a very long hike via the Grafton Loop Trail, but many hikers choose to get to the summit via an "unofficial" route that includes an unpaved logging road, a bootleg trail, and finally the Grafton Loop Trail, for a total round trip distance of about 6.5 miles and about 2100' of climbing.
Much of the plant life in the "alpine zone" has adapted to cold temperatures and high winds by growing low to the ground. Some of the vegetation that retains its leaves year round has also evolved a waxy coating on the leaves, to help prevent desiccation. That waxy coating causes a lot of reflections, which I tried to minimize in this shot by using a circular polarizing filter.
Old Speck, the fifth highest peak in Maine at 4,170', can be seen on the upper right.
Both Old Speck and Sunday River Whitecap (3,335') are in the Mahoosuc Range. The Mahoosuc Range is a northern extension of the White Mountains, and straddles the border between New Hampshire and Maine. Substantial parts of the range are publicly owned as parts of the National Park Service Appalachian Trail corridor and Grafton Notch State Park in Maine. The range is a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains.

I camped above Henson Creek, about 5 miles east of Engineer Pass, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The Alpine Loop is a 65 mile dirt road (4 wheel drive, high clearance) that goes over Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass through memorable mountain scenery.
The forest is predominantly Engelmann spruce with smaller components of white fir and subalpine fir.

During a hiking trip to the Gleckstein hut, we discovered one of the most known but also most rare flower of the alps... the edelweiss [Leontopodium alpinum]. This was our first, and 'til now, also our last time we had the pleasure to spot this alpine classic... and because of that, we took our time to make a lot of different shots...

The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex), also known as the steinbock, bouquetin, or simply ibex, is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. It is a sexually dimorphic species: males are larger and carry longer, curved horns than females. Its coat colour is typically brownish grey. Alpine ibex tend to live in steep, rough terrain near the snow line. They are also social, although adult males and females segregate for most of the year, coming together only to mate. Four distinct groups exist; adult male groups, female-offspring groups, groups of young individuals, and mixed-sex groups.
During the breeding season, males fight for access to females, and use their long horns in agonistic behaviour. After being extirpated from most areas by the 19th century, the Alpine ibex was successfully reintroduced to parts of its historical range. All individuals living today descend from the stock in Gran Paradiso National Park in Aosta Valley and Piedmont (Italy), a national park created to help the ibex thrive. The ibex is the emblem of both the Gran Paradiso National Park, and the contiguous Vanoise National Park across the French border. The species is currently listed as of least concern by the IUCN, but went through a population bottleneck of fewer than 100 individuals during its near-extinction event. This has led to very low genetic diversity across populations.
