Black Kite (Milvus migrans)_1092
The Red Kite is a more common bird than the Black Kite, at least here in SW Germany that is.
Both species share the same habitat here and the have an active flight with swooping turns, twisting and tilting their tail.
My Labor Day hike at Graham Creek yesterday turned especially awesome as I spotted the first White Peacock butterfly I'd seen since 2015! It was only the third one ever, having seen my first back in 2013!
I briefly saw it as I began my hike to the sprawling field of Blazing Star wildflowers near the bog, but it fluttered away and I couldn't reconnect with it...I was thrilled to catch a glimpse, but bummed out at the thought of not getting a shot!
Several hours later, on the trail out, it reappeared and did circles around me for quite awhile, landing to puddle near me several times! I'm proud to add its beauty to my stream again after six years!
As a person who seeks out butterflies and dragonflies in rural meadows, I have found it practical to find a somewhat concealed location near wildflowers and then settle down and wait. I wear tick-proofing gear and sun gear and just try to blend in.
It is often the case that a stationary, seated, and discreetly attired person can blend in to the surroundings in a way that attracts other creatures as well. Not the intended subjects, necessarily, but subjects nonetheless.
This Phoebe was very low to the ground, and likely picked its perch for many of the same reasons I picked mine, with some of the same subjects targeted as nutrition.
As the name implies, blooms on day lilies only last a day, but they have lots of them. Diane deadheads them to keep them looking their best. On this day. my favorite group is the one shown.

Aquí estoy , aunque yo misma no lo crea…Recorriendo en la realidad, la costa que conocí con imágenes observadas por tantos años…El nombre real es el de playa de Aguas Santas y está situada en la parroquia de A Devesa en Ribadeo. Tiene el título de la playa más espectacular del mundo y con mucha razón claro.
Cuando mejor se puede disfrutar del paisaje, es con la marea baja , como en este momento que me tocó visitarla , se podía caminar por la arena fina, tranquilamente entre los acantilados. Tampoco nos dieron mucho tiempo los “señores del Transcantabrico”… Pero recorrimos un poco, para ver las grietas y galerías de rocas que se han formado por la erosión y nos quedamos con sabor a poco . La próxima visita, si la hay claro, será para quedarnos unos días.

As the morning sun gently breaks through a blanket of heavy clouds over the Wellington coastline, its golden rays kiss the calm sea, creating a serene yet dramatic contrast. The horizon fades into the soft silhouette of distant hills, hinting at the promise of rain. A tranquil moment where nature’s elements dance in harmony, painting a picture of calmness as the day begins.
It's always such fun to see what it's flower will look like will her petals be long rays as the sun is bursting from her or will it have short rays.as the sun in the Spring the details make the flower. The Sunflower is like sun on a stick...Summer isn't summer without the Sunflower...

Also known as Prizer Fac or Pritzker Fac this abandoned university campus features wainscoted rooms, an auditorium and an impressive staircase. Some of the buildings are still in use, most parts however are abandoned, some of the roofs already collapsed. Thus, it's just a matter of time before this place will be gone.

As we were driving along Jenolan Caves Road I was looking out the window and saw the lovely sun light hitting the side of the mountains as it was setting with a few cloud shadows as well, Ian pulled over when it was safe to do so and this is want I got.
As the day draws to a close, CPKC's Windermere sub way freight pounds out the last few miles on the crews day as they near their terminus at Fort Steele. Pacing these EMD's at 50MPH never gets old.

Rapeseed, also known as rape, or oilseed rape, is a bright-yellow flowering member of the family Brassicaceae, cultivated mainly for its oil-rich seed, which naturally contains appreciable amounts of erucic acid. Canola are a group of rapeseed cultivars which were bred to have very low levels of erucic acid and are especially prized for use as human and animal food. Rapeseed is the third-largest source of vegetable oil and the second-largest source of protein meal in the world.
……So called as it follows the River Windrush - this shot was taken as it wends its way through Bourton on the Water in the cotswolds - all very peaceful here as we began our walk. Alan:-)

Bloemfontein (ZA) - 17-07-2024 - Op het stoomdepot
Zuid-Afrika was ooit een paradijs voor stoomliefhebbers, met een enorme variëteit aan stoomlocomotieven voor zowel hoofdlijnen als smalspoorlijnen. In 1959, tijdens het hoogtepunt van de stoomtractie, waren er maar liefst 3.300 stoomlocomotieven in gebruik. Hoewel de stoomtractie in 1992 werd afgeschaft, blijven Zuid-Afrikaanse stoomtreinen wereldwijd geliefd bij spoorwegliefhebbers. Dit komt mede door de indrukwekkende locomotieven zoals de gelede Garratt-types en de zware Northern-types met de kenmerkende 4-8-4 as-indeling en een gewicht van meer dan 200 ton inclusief tender.
Een deel van deze stoomlocomotieven is bewaard gebleven, vaak in particulier bezit. Dankzij het enthousiasme van stoomliefhebbers worden deze soms nog ingezet, al vraagt dit helaas ook veel 'financiële toewijding'.
Veel locomotieven staan in het depot van Bloemfontein die de sfeer uitademt van een heus stoomdepot uit vervlogen tijden. In juli 2024 organiseerde Farrail Tours (www.farrail.de) een uitgebreide stoomtreinsafari. In de aanloop hiernaar toe heerste er behoorlijke bedrijvigheid op het depot.
Het is tegen zes uur, aan het einde van de middag, als het langzaam donker wordt. Het is juli en hier midden in de winter. Locomotief 3631 van het type Class 24 wordt prachtig verlicht door de laagstaande zon. De Class 24 waren lichte zijlijnlocomotieven, geschikt voor de honderden kilometers spoor van 40 pond per yard (20 kilo per meter) die eind jaren 1940 nog in Zuid-Afrika aanwezig waren. Destijds werd besloten om 100 locomotieven van de Class 24 aan te schaffen in plaats van al het lichte spoor te vervangen door zwaarder spoor van 60 pond per yard (30 kilo per meter). Verderop staat op hetzelfde spoor locomotief 3410 van het indrukwekkende type Class 25 NC. Rechts daarvan staat locomotief 3427, die net van water is voorzien. In de loods rechts staat locomotief 2976 van type Class 15F, destijds de meest voorkomende stoomlocomotiefklasse van de Zuid-Afrikaanse Spoorwegen.
Het aanwezige personeel maakt een praatje voordat de zware nachtarbeid begint: het opstoken van de Class 25 NC-locomotief 3437 voor de goederendienst van de volgende dag naar Kimberley.

This part of Bodmin Moor, near Minions, a few miles north of Liskeard, has the remains of three neolithic stone circles known as The Hurlers, as well as several individual standing stones such as the one pictured. They are thought to date from around 1500 BC. Although there have been many theories, no-one knows for certain what their purpose was.
Tin and copper mining took place throughout this area until early in the 20th century, and many of the engine houses and other remains can still be seen. The engine house in the distance housed a 50-inch pumping engine, installed in the 1880s. The mine shaft it served reached 720 feet and was part of the South Phoenix Mine. The engine house is now a visitor centre.
As we stay home to keep safe, our truckers keep on trucking. Thank you to everyone still working to keep us all safe. Hope everyone is well and staying safe.
This valley view shows a truck going up this valley hill. My view is going to be green soon once the weather warms up. So looking forward to that. I see I have a new bucket must have blown in with our strong winds here in the prairies.

As was typical before homes had electricity, the kitchen was separated from the main house to prevent the heat of cooking from rising into the living quarters. At the Poe House, the kitchen is on the far side of the covered back porch, allowing easy access during inclement weather. 'The ramp is a modern addition built to make the house museum ADA compliant. HSfS
As we are 100% organic gardeners, the struggle with molluscs has been an almighty one this year due to all the extra rain. They have munched their way through nearly every crop and flowerbed with relentless enthusiasm and tiny ones getting primed for next year are everywhere. Garden snails are nocturnal and there's nowhere they like to spend the day more than parked up in the perfectly concave leaves of sedum spectabile. These three looked too perfect to ignore so it was a photo opportunity must. It would of course be very easy to rearrange snails to your hearts content, but these three were genuinely found in this very ordered arrangement.
The steam-era water tank behind the Utah Railway shops and offices stands lifeless under the stars at Martin, Utah. Not only has this structure outlasted the 2-10-2s and 2-8-8-0s that it was built to serve but also the coal trains that have kept the Utah Railway operating for over a century. Today, Martin is all but a shell of its former self.
We walked along to a local bar that had a good view out over the water. We were hoping for a sunset, however it didn't really look like that would happen. Then, the weather gracefully treated us to more than we had hoped for!

As Cal was walking behind the Aston Martin DB9, he couldn't help but glance at the sunset catching the classic lines of the old DB5 parked alongside. He briefly got so excited, he even reached for the gun which has made a sudden appearance in his holster! Clearly he watches too many movies!
