As you know, Rose of Sharon's can grow quite large and tall. They tower above all the rest of the flowers in the yard and it's the same in this case. Some of our Rose of Sharon's even tower over me and I'm 6'3, which makes it difficult for pruning, but that's what ladders are for...right ?

This is another one of those what-do-you-do-with-bad-weather images. We traveled to Bandon. The weather for photos stunk. Fog is cool, and useful, but a total fog in is not cool or useful. So what to do? Into the caves! There are lots of sea caves at Bandon. The tripod was key here because there was not much light. I bracketed this to get more range but did not end up needing it. I am not a video guy but the effect here made wish I was, the fog was rolling into the cave in these cool blankets. Made it tricky to shoot. Anyway, always head for the light, even if it gets your feet wet. Enjoy.

Rain fell steadily—sometimes in hard bursts—as we hiked the forested trail to Second Beach in Olympic National Park, Washington. But when we reached the shore, the rain eased, and the skies opened just enough to take in the rugged beauty of the coast.

This photo looks west along the north end of the beach, capturing several sea stacks and a striking natural arch carved into the end of a narrow headland. The arch is on one of the rocky fingers that form the Quateata headland. Pronounced Qw'aatilla by the Quileute people, the origin and meaning of the name are unclear, but the headland is iconic along this stretch of coastline.

Geologically, the headlands and sea stacks are composed primarily of massive, erosion-resistant sandstones belonging to the Hoh rock assemblage. These sedimentary rocks were deposited in deep marine basins likely as submarine fans and later uplifted as tectonic forces shaped the Olympic Peninsula.

The bluffs and parts of the beach are formed from a distinctive geologic unit known as a mélange—a chaotic mix of rock types and sizes. The grain sizes range from large blocks to sand of various origins embedded in a fine-grained, highly deformed matrix.

Mélanges like this are typically formed in subduction zones, where one tectonic plate is forced beneath another. In this case, the mélange is part of the Hoh rock assemblage which is an accretionary wedge associated with the ongoing subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate beneath the North American Plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

These rocks record the complex and powerful geologic history of the Pacific Northwest coast.

After we had some time to enjoy the scenery and examine a little of the geology, the clouds darkened, and the rain returned. We hurried back up the trail.

As the Blue Angels rolled on the runway you can see the heat rising from the ground.

Heat distortion is caused when light is refracted through air of differing densities. Hot air is less dense than cold air, so light waves are bent differently in hot versus cold air. The result is visible heat waves when there is a significant temperature difference between the ground and the air above it.

As the final golden rays of sunlight kissed the thin layer of clouds in the sky, eastbound local job NS D19 crawls through the community of Paleman on the former Wabash mainline with a cut of grain hoppers recently picked up from the Ray-Carroll CO-OP grain elevator in Norborne. |what we talk about when we talk about love|

As the land does stretch out wide

Deep in the beautiful countryside

A mouth does find its daily bread

On sweet nature, it is fed

Under the tree, it is seen

Feeding on the delicious green

Devouring the treasure, that does rise

miraculously before all eyes

Deep in the beautiful countryside

That stretches out, green and wide

As the sun went down and the temperatures continued to fall in the minus temps at sunset, I was walking to return to my car when I saw this LEO perched on an open snag in the middle of the meadow. I took some safety shots and moved in closer and closer. This individual didn't care that I slow approached. This wasn't my closest shot that evening, but the background was nice at this angle. After spending about 15-20 minutes with this individual, I hiked back to the car in the dark. Click for large view.

As the sign says, it was opened in 1778. Part of Tooley's boat yard, it provided blacksmithing operations, as well as boat repairs. It continues this service to present day.

As you can see, the male Bowerbird has this funky pink crest that adorns the back of his head and the nape of the neck. THis was the best shot I could get of it as he obviously wasn't trying to attract me with his charms.

"The males, which grow to about 35cm long, have to construct a twin-walled tunnel bower, stretching 1m long and 45cm high, within a cleared ‘courtyard’ just to catch the glance of a female. And even if he builds and maintains the tallest, most robust bower in the region, he’s still not going to get much of a glance if he’s not decorating it at either end with hundreds of colourful paraphernalia – rocks, seeds, bones, shells, pieces of glass, and all kinds of plastic objects of all kinds of colours.

The idea is for the female to enter the bower tunnel to inspect the male’s handiwork, while also inspecting his own pink crest, which he’ll show off to her in the most enthusiastic fashion" Australian Geographic

I, for one, never could figure out what Paul Simon was talking about. Maybe it was snowflakes on the soles of her shoes? :-)

With the weather having been quite stormy recently, it's just as well many boats never made it into the water at a local marina this summer.

As the water at my feet rushed by, the evening colors began to change. The sky had been filled with white clouds, but then changed the mood with a golden glow. The color was reflected in the water, adding to the warmth of the moment.

The water that was rushing out to sea, was met by the incoming tide. This resulted in a chaotic point, creating a small rip tide. Clouds also played their part, appearing to emulate this chaos, and matching the turbulence. It all created a scene that was very much alive, and the warm colors helped to tell that story of activity.

As winter begins to wane — very slowly mind you — I wonder how much flooding there will be this year. By that I don't mean destructive flooding but the overflowing of normal banks in the park.

As the sun rises and hits the lake the surface fog burns off in about ten minutes. In a few weeks the lake will be frozen.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.
