Subalpine fir (native to high altitudes)
With floods on the way, I dived back to my first digital camera and a hike in Alaska. I shot a number of these. About as shot.
We don't have to evacuate, but some roads are closing. The emergency text system worked well last night. Stay safe, everyone, from omicron, floodwaters, and other dangers.
As nightfall arrives and the moon rises obscured by clouds, many a ship has crashed on these rocky shores. The lighthouse being dark just makes it more dangerous. May a ships course be true so that both ship and its crew make it safely into port.
As far as I'm aware, not a species that breeds on the local moors. but nevertheless a fairly regular sight on spring and late summer passage. This handsome male spent a few days on the edge of the moors below Derwent Edge at the start of May.
As the "squadron" of pelicans (also called a "brief," "pod," "pouch," or "scoop") flew by, I focused on this beauty.
As we explored around French Farm Lake near Mackinaw City, Michigan, the forest floor seemed alive with color. (OE)

Commonly known as moth orchids, is a genus of about seventy species of orchids in the family orchid. Orchids in this genus are monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with long, coarse roots, short, leafy stems and long-lasting, flat flowers arranged in a flowering stem that often branches near the end. Orchids in this genus are native to India, China, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia with the majority in Indonesia and the Philippines. A few to many, small to large, long-lasting, flat, often fragrant flowers are arranged on erect to hanging racemes or panicles. The sepals and petals are free from and spread widely apart from each other. The lateral sepals are usually larger than the dorsal sepal and the petals much wider than the sepals. The labellum is joined stiffly to the column and has three lobes. The side lobes are erect and more or less parallel to each other and the middle lobe sometimes has a pair of appendages or antennae. 54107

Mountain Hare - Lepus Timidus
The mountain hare (Lepus timidus), also known as blue hare, tundra hare, variable hare, white hare, snow hare, alpine hare, and Irish hare, is a Palearctic hare that is largely adapted to polar and mountainous habitats.
In the European Alps the mountain hare lives at elevations from 700 to 3800 m, depending on biographic region and season.The development of alpine winter tourism has increased rapidly since the last few decades of the 20th century, resulting in expansion of ski resorts, growing visitor numbers, and a huge increase in all forms of snow sport activities. A 2013 study looking at stress events and the response of mountain hares to disturbance concluded that those hares living in areas of high winter recreational activities showed changes in physiology and behaviour that demanded additional energy input at a time when access to food resources is restricted by snow. It recommended ensuring that forests inhabited by mountain hares were kept free of tourist development, and that new skiing areas should be avoided in mountain hare habitat, and that existing sites should not be expanded.
In August 2016, the Scottish animal welfare charity OneKind launched a campaign on behalf of the mountain hare, as a way of raising awareness of mountain hare culls taking place across the country and in garnering public support for the issue. Mountain hares are routinely shot in the Scottish Highlands both as part of paid hunting "tours" and by gamekeepers managing red grouse populations (who believe that mountain hares can be vectors of diseases which affect the birds). Much of this activity is secretive but investigations have revealed that tens of thousands of hares are being culled every year. The campaign, which urges people to proclaim that We Care For The Mountain Hare", will culminate with the charity urging the Scottish government to legislate against commercial hunting and culling of the iconic Scottish species. The campaign has revealed widespread public support for a ban on hare hunting in Scotland.
Unlike the brown hare, which is thought to have been introduced by the Celts during the Iron Age, the mountain hare is native to Britain. However, it is only native to the Scottish Highlands and was translocated elsewhere.

18-April-2022: as you can see, the inner slope of these mountains, little exposed to the sun and overlooking 2 glacial/U valleys (that are, in general, snow covered for several months a year), is still in winter garment with an extensive snow cover, although not very thick even at high altitudes.
The inner slope of the ENTIRE long chain/main yoke of the Kamnik and Savinja Alps (from Kokrška Kočna to Ojstrica, more or less), which, from here, continues for several kilometers to the East, has given rise to 4 main-valleys of glacial origin/cirque, one of which in Austria (Vellacher Kotschna/Steiner Alpen).
I believe that the former presence of several Wurmian era glaciers in a few kilometers and low altitude (in relation to the rest of the South-Eastern Alps), is due to the Eastern and rather isolated position of this articulated mountain range that makes it the most open and most frequently affected by cold currents from the North, North-East and East of the entire Southern sector of the Eastern Alps.
The Kamnik and Savinja alpine sub-section, which lies to the East and to the South of the lower Karavanke/Karawanken ranges (Carinthian Alps Section), extends beyond the main chain/axis aforementioned and the cirques connected to it, grouping other isolated reliefs, such as the Storžič (2132m a.s.l.) to the West and the Raduha (2062m a.s.l.) to the East.
As the sunrise started, so did some of the fog burning off, starting to reveal the mountains again during this long exposure at Oxbow Bend.
Yellow-headed blackbirds are not entirely uncommon west of the Cascades but they usually stay well clear of people. For whatever reason, on this day in late April, I was able to get close. A nice treat! Apparently this was an aberration as on several days since they stay at least 50 yards away.
As I said before no more belly flapping for me,
with the D750 having the flip screen all I do is lay the camera down and focus.
I rarely take photos of our Crocuses, we have them in different areas.

.. I see this bush that I never photograph because I dislike it .. but who am I to dislike this .. it simply ignores me too .. I don't care to be ignored so.. I photograph a tiny piece of it .. perhaps our relationship will improve.. or so I tell the voices in my head.

As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations the Humber Bridge was adorned with a Union flag on the top of each tower. However there wasn’t much wind to make them billow and in any case they weren’t that big to make them stand out, and don’t show on this image. Nonetheless a pleasant sunset which provided a double sun star.
And don’t regard yourself as a guardian of freedom unless you respect and preserve the rights of people you disagree with to free, public, unhampered expression :-)

As they run, their hooves barely touch the ground. Their movements are synchronized, as if they are dancing to an invisible melody, embodying the harmony of nature. The wildflowers they pass by paint the landscape and create a delicate contrast against the lush green grass.
These beautiful Arabians are bred by a friend who had me over for a day to photograph them in the gorgeous late summer pasture. I came away with amazing images and he got photos for his breeding portfolio.

Caught as it threw the acorn up in the air to swallow it fantastic to watch these amazing crows they are so clever !!
Amazing birds very secretive and shy when they want to be .Spring and summer they stick to cover screeching their annoyance at anyone that dares disturb them but autumn comes and they seem to be everywhere especially where theres a chance of finding some acorns !!

This was a grain storage facility for Budweiser back in the day. I caught it just as a storm was moving in, and loved the silhouette. I also really liked the reflection of sunlight in the windows.
Known locally as "Whalley Arches", Whalley Viaduct is a 48 span railway bridge crossing the River Calder and a listed structure.
It was built between 1846 and 1850 under the engineering supervision of Terrence Wolfe Flanagan and formed part of the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe and West Yorkshire Railway. It is a red brick arch structure and the longest and largest railway viaduct in Lancashire.[4] It carries the railway, now known as the Ribble Valley Line, 21.3m over the river for 620m.

Over 7 million bricks and 12,338 cubic metres of stone were used in construction. 3,000m of timber were used for the arch centring, temporary platforms and the permanent foundation piles. During construction on 6 October 1849, two of the 41 arches then completed collapsed, with the loss of three lives.
The east side of the bridge, nearest the remains of the Abbey, has the only decorative treatment
Also known as the Golden Browed Bulbul, this is an endemic bird of South India and Sri Lanka. The bird is bright yellow and easy to identify in the bush and canopy where they are sighted. Apparently, this subspecies of the bird we shot in the Malabar region / Western Coast is a bit paler than the subspecies on the other coast - though I haven't seen it yet.
The birds are of the same size as other bulbuls - maybe 20 cms - and are found in small groups. We sighted several around fruiting trees such as wild berries, Figs and they were quite loud during the time. The calls were a tad easy to remember and just like other bulbuls they were noisy. This is the start of their breeding season and hence I think they were out more than usual.
