As mentionned in the previous post, with the 'indefinite' closure of the Arbec sawmill in Parent, traffic has gone down drastically on the former NTR. L57321-29 is coming back with no traffic from Senneterre, and only one empty woodchip car left behind from the sawmill.

As a cold January rain falls on southern New England, the Providence & Worcester Railroad is delivering the first unit coal train to traverse the Green Mountain Gateway route. The train, which originated at the Port of Providence, RI, is heading to a power plant in Johnson City, NY, and will be travelling on the New England Central, Vermont Rail and Canadian Pacific.

Just as I pressed the button, this shieldbug took off, and I cursed assuming that I had (yet another) empty leaf shot.... but when I viewed the image to delete it, I realised that it had captured the event just at the right moment! Talk about lucky!!

Knowing the theme my daughter brought me a tube of POLOs when she visited late this afternoon.
A bit of a scramble to do anything and this then a quick 'one off' photograph.
And the POLOs turned out to be sugar free

As exhaust rises into the illumination of a light tower, Rio Grande EMD SD40T-2 No. 5371 rests next to the venerable sand tower at Helper, Utah, on the night of October 23, 2007. By this autumnal date in 2007, the aging Tunnel Motor was the last Denver & Rio Grande Western locomotive on the Union Pacific system in its original unpatched paint and road number.
As many opine for the days when the Bozeman Local ran like clockwork and with clean power, no doubt people such as Mark Hemphill yearn for when the MRL #405 plied the rails as DRGW #3047. Although the tonnage on this day won't make a dent in the speed, even with a 1.9% grade ahead, the #405 undoubtedly saw mountain territory in its previous life. The #3047 was one of 22 GP35's delivered to the DRGW between 1964/65. Like most of the GP35 fleet, it lasted just about 28 years, being retired in Dec 1993 along with 17 others. An interesting note is that all 22 GP35's were made to be trailing unit only in 1972, removing cab seats, toilets and radios. I am unsure if this lasted until their retirement or if they were made lead qualified again at some point. Thanks to utahrails.net for the great details! Its an interesting note that by now the #405 has spent close to or more time on the Montana Rail Link than it did the Denver and Rio Grande Western. Time marches on!

In fact, not only the rain has come, a sudden and strong wind has begun to blow. I decided that it would be better to shelter myself in the hotel :)

As the shadows rapidly grow in south Georgia, CSX's Fitzgerald to Waycross turn, L738, heads northward through Nichols on its return to Fitzgerald. These old Dash 9 and Dash 8 units are not long for this Class 1 world, as rumor has it they are slated for retirement in June.
Sarmizegetusa Regia (also known as Sarmisegetusa, Sarmisegethusa, Sarmisegethuza; Ancient Greek: Ζαρμιζεγεθούσα, romanized: Zarmizegethoúsa) was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians before the wars with the Roman Empire. Built on top of a 1200 m high mountain, the fortress, consisting of six citadels, was the core of a strategic and defensive system in the Orăștie Mountains (in present-day Romania).
The sacred zone — among the most important and largest circular and rectangular Dacian sanctuaries – includes a number of rectangular temples, the bases of their supporting columns still visible in regular arrays. Perhaps the most enigmatic construction at the site is the large circular sanctuary. It consisted of a setting of timber posts in the shape of a D, surrounded by a timber circle which in turn was surrounded by a low stone kerb. The layout of the timber settings bears some resemblance to the stone monument at Stonehenge in England.

As our boat was returning to port a dolphin decided to put on a great show for us. This was a great way to start my vacation.

As I came home this morning and was walking down the hallway to our flat I saw this little one out of the window. A new kitten on the block.
The photo isn't great and I'm not sure it will work viewed large, but I didn't get much time to get a better photo, he went back inside.
Possibly OK large, but not sure, but thank you for your favourites.
As it was so noisy last night I thought I'd chance my luck and try to get a lightning image as the storms raged over head. I was rewarded with this shot from the spare bedroom window, just before 2.00 am this morning. Tired now!
As some of the trees change colour and the sun is lower in the sky, the lighting is prone to significant change on the hills.
Red fox sightings while touring Yellowstone NP, even in the winter, are fairly common. Usually you encounter them crossing the road, running along the side of the road, or even mousing off in the distance. This winter though we found this red fox in a most unusual place.
We were returning from a productive day in Lamar Valley when we spotted this fox, high up in a crack in the granite rock which tower alongside the road. It had reportedly been sighted there several days earlier for a few days, then disappeared. We were quite excited to stop and grab some images as it slept, got up & repositioned itself, yawned, and began another nap. It looked so comfy up and I loved how isolated it was as well.
You never know what you're going to get when visiting Yellowstone. One thing is for sure, it's always exciting. :-) Looking forward to another visit in the near future.
